Universal Looking to Saudi Arabia for New Theme Park

Universal Studios Planning Major Theme Park in Saudi Arabia

According to a new report from The Wall Street Journal, Universal Studios is currently in the early planning stages of developing a new theme park in Saudi Arabia. This move would place Comcast’s entertainment powerhouse in direct competition with Disney, which recently announced its own plans for a park in Abu Dhabi.

The proposed park would be located in Qiddiya, a massive entertainment and sports “gigaproject” currently under development southwest of Riyadh. While the project is still in the concept phase, sources indicate that Comcast CEO Brian Roberts visited the site last month to tour the development, signaling serious interest from the media giant.

If the deal goes through, it will likely be structured as a licensing agreement. Under this model, a Saudi government-backed entity would finance the multi-billion dollar construction, while Universal would provide the intellectual property and creative design.

What is Qiddiya? Qiddiya is rapidly becoming the epicenter of Saudi Arabia’s tourism ambitions. The destination is already set to open a Six Flags theme park later this month, which will feature the world’s tallest and fastest rollercoaster, “Falcon’s Flight”.

Unlike Universal’s owned-and-operated parks in Orlando or Hollywood, a licensing deal allows the company to expand its global footprint without shouldering the massive upfront capital risks.

This isn’t Universal’s first attempt to enter the Middle Eastern market. In 2008, the company broke ground on Universal Studios Dubailand, but the project was famously abandoned following the global financial crisis, leaving behind only a lonely entrance arch in the desert.

With the recent opening of Epic Universe in Orlando and a potential park in the United Kingdom also in the works, Universal seems ready to try again—this time with the backing of Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 initiative.

11 Disneyland Attractions Closing for Refurbishment This January

If you are planning a trip to the Happiest Place on Earth to ring in the New Year, you’ll want to grab your planners! While the holiday magic at Disneyland Resort is in full swing through January 7th, the post-holiday “refurbishment season” is right around the corner.

Disney has officially updated its calendar, and it looks like a total of 11 attractions across Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure will be taking a temporary hiatus starting this January.

Here is the breakdown of what is closing and when so you can avoid any “Blue Character” moments on your next vacation!

Disneyland Park Closures

The most notable closure on the list is a heavy hitter from a galaxy far, far away. Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance is scheduled to close for routine maintenance starting January 20, 2026. Disney hasn’t shared a reopening date just yet, but these “routine” stops usually last a few weeks.

We’re also seeing the annual “un-decking of the halls” as seasonal favorites transition back to their classic versions:

Haunted Mansion: Closing Jan. 12 – Jan. 22 to remove the Haunted Mansion Holiday overlay.
“it’s a small world”: Closing Jan. 26 to remove its holiday lights and decor (Reopening TBD, typically early February).

Sony is officially going nuts over Peanuts, announcing a $457 million deal to acquire majority control of the iconic franchise featuring Charlie Brown, Snoopy, and the rest of the gang, according to reporting by Variety. The deal gives Sony roughly 80% ownership of Peanuts Holdings LLC after purchasing WildBrain’s 41% stake, while the Schulz family retains the remaining 20%. Management of the brand continues through Peanuts Worldwide, which will now become a consolidated subsidiary of the Sony Group, with Sony Music Entertainment Japan taking the lead alongside Sony Pictures Entertainment.

Sony executives were quick to emphasize that this isn’t a shake-up for the sake of shaking things up. The company says it plans to honor Charles M. Schulz’s legacy while expanding the Peanuts brand using Sony’s global reach across film, television, music, gaming, and consumer products. Peanuts already has a strong presence on Apple TV+ with animated series and specials, and that relationship continues, including a previously announced animated feature film and content partnerships running through 2030.

For theme park fans, this deal raises some interesting questions but doesn’t immediately change anything on the ground. Peanuts attractions currently appear at regional parks, such as Knott’s Berry Farm, and several Cedar Fair and Six Flags locations, under long-standing licensing agreements. Those arrangements typically operate independently of ownership changes, meaning Snoopy’s presence in theme parks should remain stable for now. However, Sony’s increased control could influence future expansions, branding, or new experiences down the line.

WildBrain, meanwhile, exits the deal debt-free and remains deeply involved with Peanuts as a multi-year partner. The company will continue producing Peanuts content, managing the Snoopy YouTube channel, and serving as licensing agent across several international markets. In short, Snoopy isn’t going anywhere, but he may soon have access to a much bigger doghouse as Sony looks to grow the brand for generations to come.

Five New Lawsuits Filed Over Epic Universe’s Stardust Racers, All Brought by Same Attorney

Five new lawsuits have been filed against Universal Orlando Resort and coaster manufacturer Mack Rides, all tied to alleged injuries on Stardust Racers at Epic Universe, and notably all filed by the same personal injury attorney. According to reports from WESH 2, attorney Nicholas Spetsas represents every plaintiff involved in the newly filed cases, each alleging that violent head movement during the ride caused serious and lasting injuries.

The lawsuits claim riders experienced repeated and forceful head shaking due to what the filings describe as inadequate restraint of the head, neck, and spine. Alleged injuries listed across the cases include severe neck pain, paralysis, long-term disability, mental anguish, and loss of enjoyment of life. While the claims vary by plaintiff, the core allegations and language in each filing are largely similar, further highlighting that all cases stem from the same legal strategy and attorney representation.

Stardust Racers, like other high-intensity thrill coasters, includes posted safety warnings advising guests of the ride’s aggressive forces and cautioning individuals with neck, back, or spine conditions not to ride. A recently published research paper from DisneyResearchHub explains how Walt Disney Imagineering successfully brought the Frozen snowman into the real world as a free-walking robotic character, complete with his signature animated charm.

According to the research team, Olaf was especially difficult to build due to his exaggerated proportions, tiny feet, heavy head, and animated walk cycle that ignores real-world physics. Traditional robotics could not sell the illusion, so Imagineers developed a hidden mechanical system with an asymmetric leg design concealed beneath Olaf’s soft “snow” body, allowing him to walk naturally without visible legs.

Rather than hand-programming his movements, Olaf’s walk and stance were trained using reinforcement learning guided by animation. Artists created stylized motion references that AI systems learned to replicate, while additional controls reduced footstep noise and adjusted movement in real time to prevent overheating. The result is smooth, quiet motion that closely matches Olaf’s on-screen personality.

If you are flying into or out of Orlando over the holidays, you will definitely have company. Orlando International Airport is preparing for what could be its busiest winter holiday travel season ever, with nearly 3.1 million passengers expected between December 19 and January 5, 2026.

Orlando International Airport Braces for Record Breaking Holiday Crowds

Airport officials say the surge covers both Christmas and New Year’s travel, a time when Central Florida sees an influx of theme park visitors and holiday travelers heading home. With millions of passengers moving through MCO in just over two weeks, travelers should expect heavier crowds throughout the terminals.

The single busiest day of the season is projected to be Saturday, January 3, when approximately 196,212 passengers will arrive and depart. Sunday, January 4 is close behind with an estimated 195,960 travelers, making that weekend one of the most crowded periods at the airport.

To help manage the rush, MCO is sharing several tips to keep travel days running smoothly. Passengers are encouraged to arrive at least three hours before departure to allow enough time for parking, check-in, and security screening. Travelers should also plan to be at their gate at least one hour before boarding begins.

Checking flight status before arriving at the airport is highly recommended, either through your airline or the Orlando MCO app, which provides real-time flight updates. Parking is expected to be limited during peak days, so reserving a parking spot ahead of time can save valuable time and stress.

For travelers without TSA PreCheck or CLEAR+, MCO also offers a free service called MCO Reserve, which allows passengers to book a time slot for airport security screening.
