Talking Mickey Now Being Tested at Disneyland.

If you’ve got little kids, they’ve probably asked why Mickey doesn’t talk.  Okay, I’m not a little kid, but even I’ve found myself wishing that Mickey and the gang would say something.  Well, if you’re visiting Disneyland right now, you might just meet a talking Mickey, because the park is currently testing just that very thing.

Details are still very sketchy and we’re not sure how long this testing will last, but we’ve seen video showing Mickey greeting fans in Toontown, waving his hands, blinking his eyes and, incredibly, talking to guests and using their names.

We can’t wait to hear more about this.

Practicing Walt Disney’s Law of Doing the Impossible

Practicing Walt Disney's Law of Doing the Impossible

“If you can dream it, you can do it. It’s kind of fun to do the impossible.”

This quote is by Walt Disney (1901-1966). He was an animator, theme park designer, film director, producer, and business leader. In an age of great challenges, we need to understand Walt Disney’s law of doing the impossible, which involves doing the impossible through following your dream, using your creativity and overcoming impossible situations with imaginative solutions.

This was covered recently in our column in the Franklin Press in Franklin, North Carolina. We have been pleased that our column has also been covered on the Walt Disney Newswire, Fantasia Newswire, Roy Disney News, SBWIRE and Topix. We remember Walt Disney’s many successful productions: Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Mickey Mouse, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Fantasia, Pinocchio, Peter Pan, and many others. One of his greatest dreams was the opening of Disneyland in 1957 in California. What child or adult has not been impacted by his creativity? He made it seem easy, but behind the scenes were events that would have destroyed those without a determined dream.

Disney’s first animation company, Laugh–O-Gram, went bankrupt and he lost all his employees. In another effort, members of his talented staff were scooped up and hired by Charles Mintz, who also gained control of Disney’s early characters. These were huge blows for Disney but his creativity and dreams could not be repressed. Soon Mickey Mouse was born and became one of the world’s most popular cartoon characters, along with Pluto, Goofy and Donald Duck. In part because of the extravagance of the budget, Snow White was called, ‘Disney’s folly.’ Everyone, including Disney’s wife and partner Roy Disney, tried to talk him out of the project. Snow White won several Oscars and became an overwhelming success.

How do we know our dream is real? If a dream nags us, if it bothers us when we don’t do it, if we can’t get it out of our heads; it needs a second look. Disney had successful people telling him Snow White was impossible. But to quote Cinderella, “impossible things are happening everyday!”

The application or practice of Walt Disney’s law of doing the impossible involve using imagination to solve problems, coming up with creative ways and images of doing things and imagining solutions never tried before. Albert Einstein argued that imagination is more important than knowledge because imagination takes us into the future. Through our imagination we have the ability to create new images and ideas. Through our imagination we gain inventiveness, insight, artistry and progress in civilization. Who could have imagined that a pet mouse in Walt Disney’s studio would become the basis of the animated megastar, Mickey Mouse? Who could have imagined the Disney studio succeeding during the depression with the movie industries first full length animated film, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, when others thought success impossible?

Walt Disney’s law of doing the impossible tells us that, if we imagine failure, our mind will lead us in that direction. For awhile the United States imagined us not succeeding in manufacturing or creating better systems of production and, we lost much of our manufacturing. The automotive area is beginning to turn around as leadership imagines and creates a better future. Humans have the capability of creating a viable economy but business leaders will need to apply imaginative and well thought out visions of future products and strategies. Albert Einstein stated that in solving problems, we cannot apply the same reasoning that created the problem. He called for us to use our imagination and creativity in developing new images, visions of the future and creative ideas. Imagination takes time, but the results are invaluable.

Walt Disney, a creative animator, touched the world with his imagination. Walt Disney’s law of doing the impossible means listening and then following your dream, using your creativity and imagination to accomplish what others may call impossible and, most importantly, having fun while you are doing it! If the United States is to solve the challenges ahead, understanding Disney’s law of doing the impossible is indispensable. We can all be more effective in life by applying Walt Disney’s law of doing the impossible.

10 Money Saving Tips for your next Disney World Vacation

10 Money Saving Tips for your next Disney World Vacation

Want to take the kids to the Walt Disney World Resort, but don’t want to break the bank? With a little planning it can be done: here are ten ways to save on your next Disney World Vacation.

  1. Stay at a Disney Value Resort – While on property you still get all the extra’s as someone staying at the larger resorts. Such as Disney Transportation, extra magic hours, Disney meal plans, and much more. The rooms might be a little smaller but your just there to sleep right?
  2. Stay at a resort or vacation home off Disney property. If you have to there are plenty of decent hotel rooms available all around Lake Buena Vista. If you have a larger family (more than four people), the savings are even greater. You can get a vacation home with a private pool for a week but remember you will need your own transportation.
  3. Watch for Disney Promotions. Right now Disney is running a Free Dining Program for August and September which is excellent for saving money! Who doesn’t love free food? Lately Disney is almost always running some sort of discount on their website. (Keep in mind Chip and Company constantly keep you up to date on current Disney promotions so check back with us often) Also Disney is known to send out special promotions via postcard and email.  How do you get them to send you one? Its a mystery, but signing up to receive one of their vacation planning videos and registering at www.disneyworld.com will help. Read my previous article on the elusive Pin Codes here.
  4. Purchase a dining package. Disney offers dining packages to guests staying at their resorts. These packages have to be booked in advance and you can save 30% or more on your dining if you buy one of these plans. Essentially the dining plan is a meal plan that you pay for in advance. Sorta like a lay-away. Check out this article talking about to Meal Plan or Not To Meal Plan.
  5. Travel during the “off” season. Disney resort and dining prices fluctuate depending on what time of year it is; the same trip over Christmas week will cost you a whole lot less the first week of December. There is much debate when the off season is. One guideline to follow is when school is out it will be busy. If you check on a Disney Cruise you will see the same trip almost double for Spring Break or in the Summer. OY!
  6. Use Magical Express. If you are staying at a Disney resort you have access to Magical Express, a free transport from the airport and back. This will save you on renting a car, taxi or hiring a limo to transport you.
  7. Eat meals outside the Theme parks. Plan to eat at least one meal a day in your room, breakfast being the most obvious choice. Most Disney rooms come with an in-room fridge or access to get one (make sure of this in advance if you aren’t staying in a Disney resort) You can stock it with milk, yogurt, fruit, water or drinks. Add a loaf of bread, some peanut butter, cereal and breakfast pastries and you will save a good bit of money. Use those snack credits! If you are staying off Disney property you also have access to all the fast food restaurants and buffets in Orlando. I love Sweet Tomatoes! We even make a pilgrimage here even if we are staying on site! This is another expense category where renting a vacation home has an advantage a kitchen. With a kitchen you would be able to eliminate a lot of your eating-out expense; however, you also have to look at how much time you are spending driving back and forth to your room from the parks. Oh and the cost of parking everyday. For more check out How to Park at Disney for Free.
  8. Flash your Military ID. If you are an active or retired member of the military, there are lots of discounts available to you. To start with, there is Shades of Green resort, a resort on Disney property only for the military; it is a really nice resort, and the prices are even nicer. You are also eligible to get discounts on other Disney resorts and on tickets.
  9. Join AAA. There are several ways to save at Disney if you are a member of AAA. You can save on your room and on your admission tickets. The only downside to this is that you have to purchase a AAA Membership first.
  10. Save on airfare. All of the carriers that fly in and out of Orlando airport offer decent rates if you do a little research and plan far enough ahead you can save some good money. Check the airports actual website opposed to the travel Discount sites. For example in Greensboro Allegiant Air is not listed in Expedia but offers flights for $29, 39, and 49 if you fly on certain days of the week.

I hope this list will help you save some much need money on your next Disney Vacation. If you have some tips you would like to share let us know in the comment section below.

Cool Disney World Secrets from Disney 4 Dads

Jerry over at Disney 4 Dads has scoured the internet looking for some really cool Disney Secrets. He has come up with a list of some really cool and interesting things to try and explore while on vacation at Walt Disney World.

  • In the shop Tinkerbell’s Treasures in the Magic Kingdom (behind the castle) there is a little dresser up against the wall with a keyhole in one of the drawers. If you put your eye up to the keyhole you can see a little light and hear a bell as if Tinkerbell was stuck in the drawer
If you are the first to visit this in the morning, you get to be the one to wake her up.
  • Go into Muppet Vision 3D, at the entrance turnstiles on the right is a ticket window with a notice that says – “Closed – Key under Mat”. I have read that you should look under the mat and see if the key is really there.
  • There is a pay phone in Tomorrowland in Magic Kingdom and if you pick it up you can hear Sunny Eclipses manager on the other end who also happens to be the fake alien singer in the restaurant Cosmic Rays in Tomorrowland.
  • As you exit Star Tours (outside of the gift shop) in Disney-MGM Studios, you’ll see a “Speeder Bike” in front of an Endor background. People often assume that it is only for display but you are welcome to sit on it – this makes a great picture. Other wonderful photo opportunities in Disney-MGM Studios are the car outside Sci-Fi Dine In and all over the Honey, I Shrunk the Kids play area.

This is just a few of a very long list. Check out Disney 4 Dads for more Disney World Secrets.

PS – I hear Jerry might write and article or two on the Chip and Co site sometime in the future. Atleast that is what a little cricket told me 🙂

Disney’s Hawaii Aulani Resort tops off construction

Disney's Hawaii Aulani Resort tops off construction

Aulani, the oceanfront Disney Resort & Spa under construction in Ko Olina in West Oahu, has reached a major construction milestone.

At the end of April, the resort “topped off.” That is, crews recently poured the last section of cement at the fifteenth floor of the resort’s buildings.

That doesn’t mean the resort is done.  It just has reached its final height.  Above you see a recent picture which shows the two wings of towers connected by three arched lobby structures—which are supposed to evoke a Hawaiian village.  The lobby will eventually have volcanic stone columns and glass walls.

You can see the first outline of the resort’s water features in the center of the photo.  Water features will eventually include an inland saltwater lagoon, quiet pool and a water park with slides, rapids and waterfalls.  Most of the rest of this area, now bare earth, will be filled with gardens.

Citricos: Hit and Miss at The Grand Floridian.

citricos2
citricos2

Citricos: Hit and Miss at The Grand Floridian.

Citricos, one of  Disney World’s signature restaurants, specializes in a fusion of Mediterranean and French cooking with a Floridian touch. Think braised short ribs with creamy polenta in a blood orange demi-glace or a a cheese trio that includes a fresh lemon ricotta from Central  Florida.  The food is inventive, but accessible, so even picky eaters are sure to find something on the menu.   Recently, we’ve heard a lot of good reviews about Citricos, so my husband and I decided to go there for our anniversary.

Citricos, which means citrus in Spanish,  located on the second floor of the Grand Floridian. We arrived a few minutes before our reservation, which was at 6:00, and were seating within a few minutes.  Keep in mind this was during a slower time of the year; if you’re going during a busier season, consider showing up earlier than we did.  The dining room is large but warm, decorated with shades of brown, yellow and cream and accented in bright blue. You may recognize some similarities to the décor of the California Grill and Flying Fish, as they were both designed by the same designer.   In keeping with the Mediterranean theme, there are wrought iron accents and mosaic tile floors.  It’s very pretty room with comfortable chairs, a view into the kitchen, and large windows that overlook one of the resort’s pools.

I’m picky about bread and I’ve had some pretty sad excuses for bread in restaurants.  In fact, I feel like good bread can really set the feeling for the entire meal.  Fortunately, this bread was really good.  We were served two types:   An kalamata olive bread and a multigrain bread.  It came with a dish of butter covered in sea salt which gave the butter a nice flavor a bit of crunch.  I could have easily made a meal out of the bread alone, it was that good.

For appetizers, my husband ordered the crab cake and I had the Arancini Crispy Risotto, which are fried balls of rice studded with sausage.  It’s served on a bed of fresh greens dressed with a balsamic vinaigrette and drizzled with a bit of white truffle aioli.  I generally don’t care for crab, but I tried my husband’s crab cake and it was really extraordinary.  The meat was slightly sweet and clearly fresh; it had none of the usual fishy taste that crab often has.  It was fairly large and covered in an orange fennel cream sauce.   My arancini was good as well, although it would have benefited from more aioli.  I especially enjoyed the dressing on the salad greens, which I could tell was made with a very good balsamic vinegar, just sweet enough with a bit of a sour bite to it.  That attention to detail in something that is really secondary to the main portion of the dish shows, to me, that the kitchen knows what they’re doing.

If we’d stopped at the wonderful bread and appetizers, this would be my favorite dining experience at Disney World, hands down.  For our entrées, I ordered the  braised short ribs and my husband had the filet Sicilian.  The short ribs are advertised as fork tender, and indeed, they are very much so.  Unfortunately they’re covered in a  blood orange demi-glace that was so overpowering that after the first couple of bites, so I couldn’t really taste the meat. Conversely, the polenta was fairly bland.  Overall, the presentation was pretty but the food itself wasn’t up to the price or the skills of the kitchen, which is generally regarded as one of the best on property.

In the case of the filet, I think the chef got a little carried away with the smoke flavoring. It was overpowering in the same way that the blood orange flavor was on the short ribs:  You could not taste the meat. The meat was cooked perfectly though and very tender.  The potatoes that came with the filet were good and we enjoyed those.

Finally, for dessert I had the warn chocolate cake and my husband ordered the spice cake, which spice was nearly perfect and probably the more difficult dessert to make as far as technique is concerned, but not something I would have chosen when there’s chocolate on the menu.  The warm chocolate cake was excellent and presented with a pretty chocolate sculpture.  The chocolate is very bittersweet and is served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. If you like your chocolate on the sweeter side, ask for an extra scoop to cut the dark chocolate taste.

Now, since it’s Disney World you’re probably wondering how children would do here.  I generally don’t bring my kids to signature restaurants, but that’s primarily because they’re still really young and just aren’t ready for it yet.  For older  kids or younger kids who are used to eating in nicer restaurants, I think it would be fine, especially if they aren’t picky eaters.  Unfortunately, they might also be bored as it’s a very quiet atmosphere as opposed to a place like California Grill, which has a view and a lot of energy.   The night we were there, there was one child in the entire place. She was right next to us, about four-years old, and we barely noticed her she was so well-behaved except to admire the elaborate sundae she had for dessert.

I haven’t mentioned our  server yet because I’m saving the best for last.  Most servers in Walt Disney World are excellent.  In fact, we often find ourselves talking after dinner about how good they are, so I expected good service. Our waiter that night went beyond what I would normally expect.  He clearly had years of experience under his belt, so he  knew when to be attentive and when to leave us alone, which is often a difficult line for a server to know how to straddle.  I noticed that he was that way with  the tables around us as well.  He explained all the food with a little bit of humor that was just right.  Whatever they’re paying him, it’s not enough.  He was literally one of the best waiters I’ve ever had, anywhere, and he made up for our disappointing entrees.

Despite some missteps with the entrees, I would return to Citricos; I’m hoping this was just the type of off night that every restaurant has now and then. The appetizers and the desserts show what this restaurant can do, and it’s better than the disappointing entrees we had that night.  Here’s hoping that on our next visit, they’ll live up to their full potential.

If you’re on the dining plan, Citricos costs two table-service credits and does not include appetizer or gratuity. Reservations are generally easier to get than the California Grill or Narcoossee’s, two other signature restaurants on the Magic Kingdom monorail.  During slower times of the year, you should be able to get a reservation at one to two months out.   To see current menus for Citricos and other Disney restaurants, we love AllEars.net and WDWInfo.
