American Idol Finalist got his start at Disneyworld on the American Idol Experience
In addition to recently celebrating its first year of operation in February 2010, “The American Idol Experience” attraction at Walt Disney World Resort can now celebrate the success of one of its top vote-getters – Aaron Kelly. The 17-year-old crooner from Sonestown, Penn., who began his “American Idol” journey at the Disney Parks attraction, advanced to the Top Five in the finals during season nine of the “American Idol” television show.
“The American Idol Experience,” which officially opened Feb. 14, 2009, at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, is the first and only theme park attraction in the world based on the smash-hit “American Idol” show. The attraction provides guests the thrill and pageantry of the television show, as excited theme park guests age 14 and older audition before Disney producers and directors to see if they have what it takes to perform on stage that day. If their auditions are successful, guests at the attraction are ushered through performance coaching sessions, cosmetology and stage rehearsals to prepare for their big moment on the theme park stage. Then, the lights go down and guests perform a hit tune in the theme park’s 1000+-seat theatre.
While on-stage, judges provide critique and audience members at each preliminary show determine who will advance to the attraction’s grand finale show that night. At the grand finale, the top vote-getter is awarded a “Dream Ticket,” a ticket that allows an eligible guest to schedule a front of the line audition at one of the regional auditions for the “American Idol” television show.
“The American Idol Experience” attraction was developed by Walt Disney Imagineering in conjunction with FremantleMedia Enterprises (FME) and 19 TV Ltd. It is based on the hit television show “American Idol” – produced by 19 TV Ltd. and FremantleMedia North America (FMNA) – and is designed to immerse Disney’s Hollywood Studios guests in the authentic feel of a live television production.
It was at Disney’s Hollywood Studios that Aaron Kelly’s road to “American Idol” stardom began.
Only four days after the grand opening of “The American Idol Experience” at the theme park in February 2009, Kelly put his talents on display for park guests and the attraction’s judges.
Once he passed the audition stages and received the most votes at his preliminary show earlier in the day, Kelly’s rendition of the Lonestar hit song “Amazed” earned him the most votes in the attraction’s Grand Finale show. As that show’s top vote-getter, Kelly was then awarded “The American Idol Experience” “Dream Ticket,” which allowed him a front-of-line spot at a regional audition for the ninth season of the “American Idol” television show.
When the regional auditions for the popular television show were announced, Kelly utilized his “Dream Ticket” and scheduled his audition in Orlando, Fla., which started him on his “American Idol” road to stardom.

Marvel merchandise makes debut at Disneyland Resort

The Disneyland Resort is adding Marvel merchandise to its shelves — the first time that Marvel has appeared at the Anaheim property since Disney bought the comic-book powerhouse late last year.

The merchandise additions come as “Iron Man 2″ is set to open in theaters Friday (today), marking the first major Marvel movie release since the $4.3 billion acquisition was finalized Dec. 31.

For now, Disney is only selling the Marvel merchandise at D Street, a Downtown Disney store that offers edgier Disney products and other brands, including movie and rock-band T-shirts. The Marvel shirts are from the Junk Food label, which specializes in vintage and pop-culture designs. So, the D Street location is a “great place” to feature these kinds of products, said Betsy Sanchez, a Disneyland Resort spokeswoman.

Disneyland officials have yet to determine if Marvel products will be sold elsewhere, including within the theme parks, Sanchez said.

Disneyland at Night: Cleaning, Cats, and Pixie Dust.

Disneyland at Night: Cleaning, Cats, and Pixie Dust.

Ever wonder how Disney parks stay so clean?  If you’ve stayed in the parks a bit after closing time, you’ve probably noticed custodial cast members starting to clean.  Well, that goes on all night, as well as repairs, gardening, painting, and yes, taking care of the feral cat colony that lives at Disneyland.  Rather than evict the cats,

“Park workers have also found a resourceful way to remove other unwanted guests — rodents.

Years ago — no one seems to know when — feral cats began to sneak into the park, living among the park’s trees and shrubs during the day. At night, they venture out, and an estimated 200 cats now prowl through Disneyland and neighboring California Adventure Park.

But instead of evicting the cats, Disneyland’s animal wranglers work to control the feline population by spaying and neutering the adult cats and finding homes for all kittens born in the resort. The cats eat at five permanent feeding stations installed throughout the two parks.”

I always say, Disney is a company that just gets things right, and I think this is one of those cases:  A smart, humane solution. As an animal lover, this warms my heart.

Disney Cruise Line: PaintFest at Sea

Cast and crew members working at Disney Cruise Line are always looking for ways to give back, not only by volunteering their own time for community service projects, but through inspiring others to do the same. Disney VoluntEARS, along with the Foundation for Hospital Art, did just that during the Disney Magic’s venture across the Atlantic Ocean last week, as our second season of Mediterranean cruises began. Some 300 guests sailing aboard the ship had a unique opportunity to participate along-side crew members at the first-ever “PaintFest At Sea.” Collectively guests and crew members gave nearly 700 hours of their time to hand paint a pre-drawn Disney character mural for donating to the children’s area of the Vall d’Hebron hospital in Barcelona.

Designed by Don “Ducky” Williams, the mural itself was quite impressive, comprised of 60 pre-drawn and color-coded individual canvases that together measured 12 feet high and 20 feet long. Once the ship arrived in Barcelona Disney characters and VoluntEARS visited the hospital to deliver the mural, leaving the amazing art work to be shared by many children and parents who come to Vall d’Hebron.

Check out this video of the “PaintFest At Sea” and the delivery of the mural to the hospital.

Good Eats - La Cava del Tequila, Walt Disney World

The heritage and tradition of tequila-making in Mexico unfolds for guests at La Cava del Tequila in Epcot at Walt Disney World Resort.

Tucked away in the Mexico pavilion, La Cava del Tequila beckons guests with more than 70 types of authentic tequila, ranging from the simplest to the rarest of them all, aged to perfection and made from the finest distilled spirits from the agave plant. Tequilas range in price from $8 to $50 for a specialty tequila.

Amid warm décor, art work and original artifacts all celebrating the Mexican heritage, a “Tequila Ambassador” is on hand to educate Walt Disney World guests on the history of tequila-making.

Also on the drink menu: Exotic and uniquely blended margaritas, introducing a variety of flavored salts, spices and tropical fresh fruits masterfully prepared by experienced mixologists.  A variety of quick tastes, tapas style, will be available, including freshly made guacamole and ceviche as well as mahi mahi tostadas with diced mango and avocado and blue crab tostados with chipotle mayo and Valentina sauce.

The 30-seat La Cava del Tequila is open from noon until Epcot park closing time.  It is connected to the famous San Angel Inn as part of the Mexico pavilion, a popular stop for Walt Disney World guests.
