Crews get down and dirty at Disneyland after dark

When the last Jungle Cruise boat docks for the night and lights fade to black on Sleeping Beauty’s Castle, the real work begins.

At lush Pixie Hollow, gardeners don miner’s headlamps as they begin uprooting stubborn weeds. On Main Street, custodians scrape chewing gum off the sidewalk. And over at Mickey’s Toontown, painters sand and recoat chipped handrails.

Few see it happen, except perhaps for the dozens of feral cats that emerge from their hiding places to prowl the park after hours, stalking rodents.

Welcome to the dark side of Disneyland.

Gone are Mickey and his friends. In their place are about 600 custodians, painters, gardeners and decorators, working to ensure that the 85-acre park meets the squeaky-clean ideals that Walt Disney himself extolled even before he launched the park 55 years ago.

During a recent overnight shift, Disneyland provided a rare glimpse into the work that goes into maintaining the world’s second-most-popular theme park. Though park officials wouldn’t divulge how much money is spent on Disneyland’s overall upkeep, they said most is spent on the night shift.

And although most guests will never witness the after-hours work, theme park experts credit the park’s continued success to its cleanliness and tidy conditions.

“Disney and many other parks recognize that keeping it clean and refreshed, with all of those little details that you don’t notice until they are missing, are important to the park’s success,” said Gene Jeffers, executive director of the Themed Entertainment Assn., a nonprofit organization of designers and builders of theme parks and attractions.

It’s one of the many reasons attendance at Disneyland jumped 8% last year despite the economic downturn, while the crowd numbers dropped at Southern California competitors like Universal Studios Hollywood, Six Flags Magic Mountain and Knott’s Berry Farm, according to a recent estimate.

To keep the park in good order, it takes a crew that works 365 nights a year, toiling under portable floodlights. “It’s a city that never sleeps,” said David Caranci, the manager of resort enhancement and decorating. “There is something always happening.”

And for nearly every nighttime task, there is a specific worker.

Ask a Disney Question: Does Disney Have Any Plans to Build in Australia?

Ask a Disney Question: Does Disney Have Any Plans to Build in Australia?

This question comes from Micheal, who asks “We recently heard that Disney has been in talks with government all around Australia about pieces of land and I was wondering if there was anyway to find out what there up to.

Thanks

Michael:  Thanks for reading Chip and Co and for sending in your question.  Thank you as well for being patient about getting this answer.

Unfortunately I don’t have a definitive answer for you, despite the rather fun logo pictured above. There’s no doubt that Disney has looked into building in Australia. In fact, the rumors center around a specific parcel of land next to Sydney Harbor.  This has been pretty widely reported, however when asked, Disney spokespeople have remained mom, merely acknowledging that the company is always looking for room to expand.  This isn’t surprising given that Disney is generally pretty tight-lipped about these matters.  I would guess that for the time being that Disney will concentrate on  Disneyland Hong Kong, which hasn’t done as well as expected, and Disneyland Shanghai, which is being built right now.  Keep in mind that the company also owns property in places like the suburban Washington, D.C., area, but have yet to announce any concrete plans for this as well.   Final decisions on these matters can take years–or in the case of Disneyland Shanghai, decades–so don’t expect any solid evidence that they’re building in Australia any time soon.

We’re fascinated by the idea of a Disney park in Australia, so if you hear anything, please let us know.

Ask a Disney Question: Jedi Training Academy.

Ask a Disney Question: Jedi Training Academy.

This question comes from Tara, who asks:

My son will have just turned 5 at the time of our trip, and is small for his age – he would LOVE to be selected to participate in the onstage battle with Darth Vader.  Do you have any suggestions about what he/we can do to increase his chances (e.g., get there at a certain time to claim an early spot, have him yell loud and be animated, wear a Star Wars costume, etc.)?  Also, are there any pay-for options that would allow him to do something like this?  Thank you.

Tara:   Great question and you’re going to love this answer.  Disney changed the method for participating in Jedi Training Academy last November. It’s now on a first come, first served basis.  Prior to the change, kids were chosen randomly, usually resulting in the loudest, youngest chidlren being picked, and a lot of sad little kids who didn’t get picked.  I can tell you from my son’s experience that not getting picked can really put a damper on a kid’s trip.   The new system is much more equitable and makes perfect sense:  If a child wants to go, they need to understand that they’ll have to wait, but they will get their chance.

The biggest issue with the change is that it can result in some long waits.  My suggestion is this:  Hollywood Studios is the one park I try to get to at rope drop, mainly because the attraction my kids are most interested in,  Toy Story Midway Mania, has lines justto get a fastpass.  So I always make sure I head to TSMM first.  What you can do is if there’s more than one grown up in the party, split up. You will take your son and go get in line at t he Jedi Training Academy.  Meanwhile, the other grown up is heading over the TSMM with all your tickets to get fastpasses so you can ride later that morning.  You don’t have to rush because over to TSMM because you won’t want a fastpass for the first couple of hours because you’ll be tied up with Jedi Training Academy.  If your fastpass return time is during your kid’s show, you can still use it later.  They’ll honor a later fastpass return time on the same day.  I don’t recommend you try to do this on an Extra Magic Hours morning because crowds will be too high.

The first show starts at 9:55 and runs about every hour or so throughout the day until 5:00 p.m.  Kids are put into a holding area where they wait in groups of about 15 for the next show to begin. There’s a bit of instruction and then they go onstage to meet Darth Vader.  It’s a really fun show, even for grown ups and those who aren’t fans of Star Wars.  There aren’t any similar activities that you can pay for, but if your son is a huge fan, Star Wars Weekends in late May and June are a great chance for him to really immerse himself in all things Star Wars.

Recently, DHS has started testing a new way of signing up for Jedi Training Academy in the afternoon. Starting at 2:00 p.m., guests can sign in and then receive a return time later that day.  Since this is still in the testing phase, you won’t want to rely on this method for getting into the show, but it’s worth checking out.  If it works for you, please let us know!

I wrote more about this here, if you’re interested.  Thanks for your question and for reading Chip and Co.

Ask a Disney Question: How Much Does the Food and Wine Festival Cost?

Ask a Disney Question: How Much Does the Food and Wine Festival Cost?

This question comes from Emery, who asks:  “Is the Food and Wine Festival free or does it cost money to eat there? Can you use meal credits from the deluxe meal plan?

Emery, your park ticket will get you into the Food & Wine Festival, but you’ll have to pay for your food once you’re there.  Most food portions are similar to tapas, or “small plates,” in size, although some are larger. Figure on at least a few items to make a meal, although smaller appetites might be satistified with less.

You can use snack creditsfor any non-alcoholic food item at the kiosks at the Food and Wine Festival, which works out very well since most WDW snacks run about $3, whereas items at Food and Wine run around $5 to $7.  You won’t be able to use your counter service credits, nor will you be able to use your dining plan credits to purchase admission to demonstrations or events like Party for the Senses.

Thanks for your question and for reading Chip and Co.

Good Eats - Kona Cafe, Polynesian Resort - Walt Disney World

Kona Cafe is a hidden gem at the Polynesian Resort and home to my favorite breakfast food Tonga Toast. The decor is very earthy with just a touch of Polynesian island flare. Open for breakfast, lunch, or dinner they offer delicious and hearty breakfast items and Asian inspired lunch and dinner fare.

Some fan favorites include Kona Coffee, Asian Noodle Bowl, and Pomegranate BBQ Pork Chop just to name a few.

Helpful Hint – Be sure to make reservations as this place can get busy quickly. Especially when people can’t get into Ohana’s.

Tucked in next door to Ohana’s and behind Kona Island Sushi Bar this is one restaurant you won’t want to miss. This restaurant is always on our Must Eats when visiting Disney World.

Walt Disney Pictures Presents The Secretariat – Trailer & Interview

Walt Disney Pictures Presents The Secretariat - Trailer & Interview

Coming this fall to a theater near you, “Secretariat” is a retelling of the greatest Triple Crown campaign ever, this time through the eyes of his owner, Penny Chenery, who took the reins of her ailing father’s stable against the advice of her husband and turned the old-boy, old-money, bourbon-fueled network that dominated the game on its ear.

“Seeing yourself in a movie is really weird,” Chenery said with a laugh.

Now 87 and living in Boulder, Colo., she returned Thursday to Churchill Downs, where Secretariat’s saga began. Chenery walks with the aid of a cane, but her wit remains as sharp as ever.

“They told me, ‘Penny, it’s not a documentary, it’s a Disney movie,'” she added a moment later. “I’ve adjusted to a revised version of my life.”

Then she paused again, looked to her left at actress Diane Lane — who plays Chenery in the movie — and beamed.

“I’m younger and prettier.”

Racehorses have struck the national nerve before for all kinds of reasons, but not for a long time. Secretariat ended a Triple Crown drought of 25 years by widening margins during the torrid summer season of 1973, giving a country numbed by the war in Vietnam and the Watergate scandal something, finally, to cheer about. The feat put Big Red on the cover of both Time and Newsweek.

Long before Seabiscuit, too, became a movie star, his rags-to-riches-story regaled an audience suffering through the cruelest years of the Great Depression. And harkening back to a time when racing dueled only baseball and boxing for the sporting public’s attention, Man O’War’s funeral was broadcast on the radio, an honor in his day accorded only to popes and heads of state.

Chenery knows only too well those days are gone forever.

But she insists the same qualities that made Secretariat the most celebrated athlete of his day — a desire to take his game to a level where only history can provide a proper context for judging — never go out of style.

“He loved to run,” Chenery said, “and it was a passion I got caught up in.”

People around the state, where many of the scenes are being filmed, know the feeling. Director Randall Wallace recalled residents gathering to watch the crews work, bringing them chocolate-chip cookies laced with bourbon. All around the backstretch at Churchill Downs, horsemen who share that same passion — for horses, and perhaps, bourbon as well — remember the brief buzz the movie “Seabiscuit” generated a half-dozen years ago.

“Anything that promotes the sport is really cool,” trainer Nick Zito said. He recalled having two horses in the 1973 Belmont, only to forget about them entirely as Secretariat drew away in the stretch and won by a record 31 lengths.

“I got lucky enough to be one or two boxes away from Penny and I saw her raise her arms in celebration. The next thing I remember is walking back to the barn and all anybody could talk about was the horse. It was just an amazing, amazing thing,” Zito added. “That’s why we always compare everything to Secretariat.”

But no one still in the game is fooling themselves. They can’t say with certainty when there will be another Triple Crown winner — the last was Affirmed in 1978 — let alone whether there will ever be another Secretariat.

A trailer for the film shown for the first time Thursday ran roughly three minutes, but makes that point over and over. In one scene, Chenery is in the barn shortly after Secretariat has been foaled and watches him struggle to get his feet underneath him.

When he does, a wide-eyed groom turns to her and says, “I’ve never seen a colt stand up that fast.”

Nor has anyone seen a colt run so swiftly. Watching a replay of the 1973 Kentucky Derby, Secretariat’s name isn’t mentioned until late in the first turn and even then, he’s running well behind the lead pack in seventh. He makes his move on the outside coming out of the second turn, then takes the lead heading down the stretch.

When Lane was asked what she planned to see during her visit to the Derby, she said she was open to just about everything.

Alongside her, Chenery offered a knowing smile.

“It’s a helluva day,” she said.

The Disney Channel Begins Production on next High School Musical

The network has ordered an original movie based on the novel “Lemonade Mouth,” the story of five Rhode Island freshmen who meet in detention and decide to form a garage band using unusual instruments, including a ukulele.

Emmy-nominated producer Debra Martin Chase will lead the project, having also produced the network’s musical movie franchise “The Cheetah Girls” in addition to films “The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants” and “The Princess Diaries.”

The script is from April Blair, based on the novel by Mark Peter Hughes. The project’s title (and the band’s name) comes from a student-led protest in the book to save the school’s organic lemonade machine.

Although Disney Channel’s movie-musical franchise has dropped from the frenzied peak of 2007’s “High School Musical 2” — the most-watched cable telecast of all time, with 18.6 million viewers — the network’s movie musicals continue to generate blockbuster numbers. The most recent contemporary big-ticket project was 2008’s “Camp Rock,” the most-watched scripted cable telecast that year, with 10.1 million viewers.

Disney Channel recently announced a sequel to that project, “Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam,” which will debut in September. “Lemonade” likely will debut a few months later. Album sales, too, are a key part of the equation. Since 2006, soundtracks from Disney Channel original movies have sold 27 million discs worldwide.
