Restaurant Review: Via Napoli.

Restaurant Review: Via Napoli.

If you’re a longtime Disney World fan, you’ve probably heard the jokes about Disney pizza.  Well, Disney must have heard those jokes too, because they set out to change our perception and have done so in a very big way. Via Napoli may just be my favorite restaurant on site. It’s certainly one of the top restaurants in Disney World.

Located in the back of the Italy pavilion in Epcot, Via Napoli features a wide, open space with a large communal table in the middle that would be perfect for larger parties, say up to twenty-five people.  We saw the waiters seat several groups at once there on our visit; none seemed to mind sharing the table.  The walls are covered in cream and rust-colored paint and punctuated by pretty frescoes.

Light fixtures feature brightly colored blown glass or iron accents.

It’s the type of restaurant where you’ll feel comfortable bringing the kids, but the food and surroundings make it special enough that it would be perfect for a casual date night as well.  The dining room has very high ceilings, but even in a crowded restaurant I didn’t find it to be overly loud; children or adults with sensory issues should be fine.  There’s also ample seating outside in a covered patio area.  During cooler times of the year, this area will be a prime location for people watching and leisurely meals.

The open kitchen in the back has three wood-fired ovens which feature faces used to represent the main volcanoes of Italy:  Mount Vesuvius, Mount Stromboli and Mount Etna.

You can also watch pizzas being prepped, slipped onto a wooden paddle, and then slid into the extremely hot ovens, where it takes only minutes to bake.

Over the course of three different meals, we tried four appetizers: The salad, made for sharing, had a spicy vinaigrette; the fritto misto, which features fried seasonal vegetables; the arancini, fried saffron risotto balls with sausage served with a red sauce for dipping; and a tomato and fresh mozzarella salad drizzled with a nice olive oil.  Of the four, the only disappointment was the arancini, which was heavy and starchy with almost no flavor. Both the arancini and the fritto misto came with a standout marinara that was just about perfect.  Don’t hesitate to try the fritto misto because you’re worried about it being greasy;  the flavor of the vegetables shines through the crispy coating. In fact, the kitchen seems to have a knack for frying, as everything fried that we tried was non-greasy and perfectly crisp.

Restaurant Review: Via Napoli.

Via Napoli serves the usual pasta dishes like spaghetti and meatballs and chicken Parmesan, but the real star here is of course the pizza. Individual pizzas start at $16 and are enough for two people with lighter appetites.  Made from imported Caputo flour, considered by many to be the best for making pizza, and water similar to that found in Italy, the crust is thin and flavorful, but not so overpowering that you don’t enjoy the exemplary toppings.  There’s something satisfying about biting into this type of crust, slightly chewy but softer in the middle.  Most pizzas are topped with a light smear of the marinara mentioned above, in addition to fresh mozzarella and various meats, vegetables, and even cantaloupe.  I loved the pepperoni, which was smaller and more spicy than what you’d find at your neighborhood take-out restaurant.  In fact, I liked it so much I had it twice on this trip.

Restaurant Review: Via Napoli.
You can find some of the best desserts on property in the World Showcase and Via Napoli is no exception. Of the two we tried, the fun ricotta fritters served in a paper cone (you get about eight small fritters, enough for two people) with chocolate sauce and fresh whipped cream was my favorite.  The fritters tasted fresh and light, like perfect little donut holes. Some chocolate sauces taste more like sugar than chocolate, either because the chef has a heavy hand with sugar or they’re covering up cheap chocolate, but this one was just sweet enough to let the flavor shine through.  We also tried the tiramisu. I’m not a coffee fan, but I would order it again, it was that good.  It’s a large piece, so two can share, although it’s good enough that you might not want to.
Restaurant Review: Via Napoli.

Like all Disney restaurants, Via Napoli has friendly, excellent service. I didn’t see any of the new restaurant jitters that you might expect and we received everything we asked for fairly quickly.  Our waiters, all of whom hail from Italy, were mainly easy-going but efficient college students.
It only took a short weekend trip for Via Napoli to become one of my favorite Disney World restaurants. With Via Napoli, Disney set out to make good pizza. Luckily for us, what they came up with is better than that. It’s simply exemplary pizza that just happens to be served in one of the best theme parks in the world. Give it a try next time you visit Disney World.
Via Napoli is operated in conjunction with the Patina Restaurant Group.   The restaurant, which seats 250 people inside and an additional 50 outdoors, is open for lunch and dinner seven days a week. If you’re on the Disney Dining Plan, it’s one table service credit; this is one place you’ll want to use the included dessert.  As of right now,walk-ups are surprisingly easy to get, but if you really want to eat at Via Napoli, do as you would with any Disney restaurant and make your reservations (407-WDW-DINE) as far out as possible, up to 180-days in advance.  If you have allergies or specific food requests, make sure you make note of them when making your reservation.  There is currently no take-out option.

Disneyworld Quick Tip – Keeping your kids busy in line

Disneyworld Quick Tip – Keeping your kids busy in line

So your at Walt Disney World and the lines are long. You standing there with your family along with a very antsy child. He or she is climbing on everything, hanging on the chains, and generally don’t want to be in line.

For many families this is a reality. For my family last January this was all to true. Until..

One of my good friends, and fan to Chip and Company, Shelly shared with my little one a simple but effective item to keep her busy in line. Not only did it keep her busy it helped clean her teeth and put a little extra food in her belly.

The secret is something very simple and I am sure is in almost every parents home in the US. What Shelly did was take pieces of Dental Floss and strung Cherrios & Fruit Loops through to make pretty kid size necklaces. She said the possibilities are endless!

You could use plain dental floss or any flavor you like. The same goes with the cereal just as long as it has a hole in the center. Shelly had a ziplock back full of different flavored necklaces.

When Shelly gave my little one this necklace she just stood in line and was a perfect little angel while she munched on her necklace. It was so wonderful and became the lifesaver of the trip, before then we had a hard time keeping busy with toys, games and what not.

So next time your at Walt Disney World or Disneyland try this little trick out and see if it makes for a happy toddler like it did for me!

P.S – Thanks Shelly for sharing this with us!!!

Best Things I Love About Disney…Morocco Pavilion

Best Things I Love About Disney…Morocco Pavilion

The Morocco Pavilion seems to attract less attention than a lot of the others. It’s a shame because it is one of the most intricate and beautiful pavilions in all of the World Showcase. Also, the United States has a very long history with the country of Morocco in that it was the first country in the world to acknowledge the fledgling United States as a country. If you look on the wall in the waiting area of Restaurant Marrakesh you will see a letter from the King of Morocco to President George Washington (of course it’s not the original that item is priceless).

The King of Morocco actually sent his Royal Architect and a group of Moroccan artists to Walt Disney World for the construction of the pavilion to make sure everything was as authentic as it could be. As a result, the mosaic work throughout the pavilion is both beautiful and striking as well as being truly authentic. As wonderful as everything appears in the artwork though, it is definitely not perfect. The Muslim faith teaches that perfection comes only from Allah so the artists purposely include flaws in their work to keep with the tenets of their faith. The flaws are small and do not detract from the beauty of the artwork in any way.

There are two fine restaurants located here. Restaurant Marrakesh is a table service (1 dining plan credit) restaurant with excellent food, authentic entertainment (g-rated), and some of the friendliest and caring Cast Members in all of Walt Disney World. The Tangierine Cafe is a counter service restaurant that is way above the usual as far as variety and quality. Please don’t be afraid of Moroccan food, it is not “scary” exotic but instead is wonderfully spiced and delicious. There are also booths out in front of the pavilion where you can get some delicious mint tea.

I could probably go on for pages about the wonders of this pavilion but, instead, I will just ask you not to walk by but go ahead and spend some time there. Don’t just walk up and down the streets but go into the buildings and look around at the detail and beauty of the artwork. Enjoy your visit to Walt Disney World.

Dear Blank, Please Blank: Disney Posts

Dear Blank, Please Blank: Disney Posts

As a college student,  I am constantly searching for amusing websites to occupy my time when I’m procrastinating. Luckily, a friend of mine shared this website, Dear Blank, Please Blank with me. Overnight, this has become my new addiction. Forget F My Life or My Life is Average — this website has stolen my attention!

While reading through over 20 pages of submissions, I came across some Disney-themed ones. I thought they were funny, so I figured I would share some of them with you.

Dear Avatar,

Pocahontas called, she wants her story line back.

Sincerely, Disney.

Dear Disneyland,

Please tell me the news report was inaccurate – $68 admission for kids (under 10)? And $76 for the rest of us? Are you effing kidding me? Consider your status as the “happiest place on earth” revoked!

Sincerely, Someone Who Thinks You Shouldn’t Go Broke to Get Happy.

Dear Peter Pan,

Being a grown up sucks. Come and get me.

Sincerely, Wendy.

Dear Pocahontas,

No. I tried, and I definitely cannot paint with wind.

Sincerely, John Smith.

Dear Justin Bieber,

Ariel would really love her voice back.

Sincerely, King Triton.

Dear Miley Cyrus,

Please put your clothes back on.

Sincerely, Adults.

Dear Rum,

Why must you always be gone?

Sincerely, Jack Sparrow.

Dear Mickey,

Very funny. Please return my pants.

Sincerely, Donald Duck.

Dear Goofy,

I just hope you as a fellow dog are enjoying your nice little house, your designer clothing and your fancy job. Yeah, don’t worry about me, I really enjoy the dog food and living in a doghouse while you sit and watch tv and eat your steak. No I don’t want any… thanks for asking though.

Sincerely, Pluto.

Dear Sleeping Beauty,

Your morning breath is just horrible. I can’t kiss you until you’ve brushed your teeth.

Sincerely, Prince Charming.

Dear Miley Cyrus,

Everybody makes mistakes, you happened to be my biggest…

Sincerely, Nick Jonas.

Dear Pluto,

It’s okay, I’m not a planet either.

Sincerely, Mickey Mouse.

Dear Peter Pan,

You had the right idea…

Sincerely, frustrated college student.

Dear Buzz Lightyear,

For the last time, YOU ARE A TOY!

Sincerely, Woody.

A letter to Disney Imagineers – We want a Monsters Inc Coaster

A letter to Disney Imagineers – We want a Monsters Inc Coaster

Dear Disney Imagineers,

I am writing you this letter today in response to question that has been plaguing me for years. You see it has been over 9 years now since Pixar‘s film Monsters Inc was in theaters. I like many people really enjoyed this movie. I can not wait for Monsters Inc 2 to hit theaters in 2012. But one thing has been really bothering me..

Why is there no Roller Coaster based off of the Door Scenes in Monster Inc?

While the Monsters, Inc. Laugh Floor is very funny and each show is original it just doesn’t quite fulfill my need for more rides at Walt Disney World.

I have been patient over the years with talks of Fantasyland expansions, new promotions, and even rumors of a possible Monsters Inc coaster in Pixar Place. I am afraid that is just not good enough.

I am going to need more from you. Normally I would say its not you it’s me but I can not lie it is all you. I need more information. How about some concept art, a simulation video, something to say that you still care.

I don’t think that is asking to much. I still care about Toy Story Mania and all the other thrill rides you have provided for me over the years. I am just asking for you to meet me in the middle and open up to me.

Yours Truly,

Chip

Disneyworld Quick Tips – Don’t skip the ADR’s

Disneyworld Quick Tips – Don’t skip the ADR’s

When your planning your Disneyworld  I can’t stress how important it is to make those Advanced Dining Reservations or ADR’s. There is nothing more frustrating that having to wait sometime hours to eat a meal. Countless times I have gone up to a restaurant to check in and heard the hostess tell the people in front of me “It’s going to be over a hour wait”. Ugh!

Disneyworld has some of the best dining on the planet and there are many Disney Food Junkies like myself out there who snatch up their ADR’s when they come available at 180 days out.

In the past you had to call Disney to make your Advanced Dining Reservations but now a days you can go online and make them yourself. Which I will say is very helpful and a feature I just LOVE! It makes planning a Disneyworld vacation so easy.

If you don’t make ADR’s even after my persuasive article, Disney released a new feature for finding a place to eat. You can now check for table-service availability at nearby restaurants using the location-based services on your supported Android, Blackberry or iPhone device. For more information check out this post here.

Good Luck and Happy Planning.

Ask a Disney Question: Where can I use a Disney Gift Card?

Ask a Disney Question: Where can I use a Disney Gift Card?

This question comes from Audra, who asks:  “Can I buy a Disney gift card at the Disney store &  use it at Bibbidy Bobbidy Boutique?”

Audra, thanks for your question and for reading the site.  Yes, you can do this. In fact, you can buy a Disney gift card at home and use it just about anywhere on Disney property as long as it’s a Disney owned company. So you’re good in the parks and most places in Downtown Disney, except shops and restaurants that are outside vendors, like House of Blues or Arribas Brothers. You can even use your gift card to pay off your resort charges at the end of your stay.  In fact, it’s a great way to set aside money for purchases you plan on making at Disney World.

Hope this helps!

Audience Participation Comedy at Epcot – the World Showcase Players

Audience Participation Comedy at Epcot – the World Showcase Players

Do you have what it takes to be King Arthur? Well, apparently my husband does because he was chosen out of the audience during our last visit to play the part. In the United Kingdom at Epcot’s World Showcase, there is a three-person comedy improv team called the “World Showcase Players.” If you are in the area during one of their scheduled performances, stop by and check out the show. There is no seating available as it is held in the middle of the street by the Rose & Crown. But you won’t notice because you will be laughing too hard.

If you are really lucky, you might even be chosen to be part of “Arthur’s Quest for the Holy Grail.” This is a live comedy show where they choose several people from the audience to play different parts: King Arthur, Sir Galahad, and the Wicked Witch Pellum. My husband had a great time playing King Arthur. Every time the actors said, “King Arthur,” the audience followed with a loud salute “Long live the king!” and then my hubby’s line was “Yahoo, that’s me baby!” It was hilarious.

I stayed right in the front to capture it all on video. I can be heard in the video also because the show is totally an audience participation show, where we had to learn phrases like, “grail, grail, grail, uh!” The actors really get the crowd going and it is evident that they truly love what they do. No two shows are the same since you never know what the “guest stars” will be like.

Currently, the show is held on Sundays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 11:30am, 12:30, 1:30, 4:00 and 5:00pm in the United Kingdom. The length of the show is 25 hilarious minutes. I don’t know if there is a script or if they just “wing it” and I think that is what makes it so great. The street comes to life with the sound of laughter, especially the laughter of children which is all the music that is required. It is worth watching for adults and kids alike, especially when King Arthur is your dad.

Review: Kid Tips for Walt Disney World: Touring Advice by Kids for Kids

Review: Kid Tips for Walt Disney World: Touring Advice by Kids for Kids
Don’t be fooled by the title, you don’t have to have an unnatural love of Lunchables or Justin Bieber to read Kid Tips for Walt Disney World: Touring Advice by Kids for Kids. This Walt Disney World travel guide is an informative and fun read for kids and parents alike. Author Tracie Cook compiles the best tips from Kid Tipsters, ages 7-15, for the Walt Disney World theme parks, attractions, and restaurants. There are even tips for the “extra magic” at the Walt Disney World Resort such as Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique, Harmony Barber Shop, and the “Singing in the Rain” umbrella.

This book checks dry facts at the door in favor of humor and personality. Kid Tipsters share brief tips that are filled with information, humor, wisdom, reassurance, honesty, and plain good advice, all from a child’s point of view. Kids will love reading this travel guide because they’ve found contributors who speak directly to them – other kids. Parents will be able to view Walt Disney world through the eyes of kids and will appreciate some of the advice they’re not likely to find in other travel guides. All readers will have fun looking for a Kid Tipster in their own backyard; I was excited to find a contributor from my hometown!

Tracie Cook puts a lot of thought into this book to create a guidebook that is approachable for kids. She includes a “Disney Speak” section which explains some of the Disney lingo that adults are fond of throwing around such as Audio-Animatronic, Imagineer, Preshow, and Queue. Attractions in each theme park are rated as OK, Good, and Awesome and Kid Tip Top Pick Attractions are highlighted.

Favorite Tips

Here are some of my favorite tips (with my thoughts).

Be on your best behavior. Listen to your parents because you don’t want to be punished on vacation.
Michael, age 8, South Hackensack, NJ (This is just good advice. Period.)

Great for little kids. This show was awesome when I was a little kid. It’s just ok now, but little kids will love it. It has some characters from the Disney TV shows.
Joey, age 8, Holbrook, NY (I love the honesty in this Playhouse Disney – Live on Stage! tip)

Train to be a Jedi. The Jedi Training is great! You get to battle Darth Vader and get a certificate at the end. I didn’t get picked the first time, but then went back and was jumping up and down and got picked. It was cool!
Ryan, age 9, Emerson, NJ (Ryan generously shares one of the secrets to getting picked for the Jedi Training Academy)

1900 Park Fare at the Grand Floridian. Dinner at 1900 Park Fare is called Cinderella’s Happily Ever After Dinner. They have a big buffet with lots of different food. They also have a sundae bar for dessert. The best part of dinner is meeting the characters. You can meet Cinderella, Prince Charming, and the step-sisters. The step-sisters are the funniest characters I have ever met. If you have a little brother that irritates you, tell the step-sisters that he will marry one of them. It’s so funny!
Madalyn, age 11, Nova Scotia, Canada (Where else can you get this kind of sisterly advice?)

Create Memories Before and After You Go

Chances are you’re planning a Walt Disney World family vacation to create memories and spend some quality time together. Kid Tips gives families a great opportunity to create memories before they even pack their suitcases by involving the kids during the planning process. There are easy-to-use worksheets at the end of Kid Tips where kids can jot down their must-see attractions and the restaurants they most want to try. When your family returns from vacation, thumbing through Kid Tips is a great way to remember the magic together.

Kid Tips for Walt Disney World* is a unique and refreshing addition to my library of Walt Disney World guidebooks and I’ll be recommending it to friends and family.

*The author provided an electronic version of Kid Tips but the opinions expressed are my own.

After Your Trip

After your trip to Walt Disney World, encourage your young traveler to share their experiences with Tracie. She personally reads every single submission and will be updating the book soon. There is a survey located in the back of the book or visit Vacation Field Guides and have your child submit his or her Walt Disney World tips online. This fall she is releasing Walt Disney World Adventure, a field guide, guidebook, and educational resource. The book is packed with information about the park’s attractions, tips from kids, “secrets,” and amazing things to discover while touring the Walt Disney World Resort.

Would Walt Disney have Blogged?

Would Walt Disney have Blogged?

Over at the official DisneyBlog, they have shot a video of Theme Park Guests answering the above question. They have done this on their one-year anniversary. It was interesting to note that every single person who responded said ‘Yes’ without any hesitation.

What would you have said?

I was a little surprised to see that not one person thought the answer would be ‘No’. Now, I didn’t read all of the comments for that post, so maybe some had other ideas. But the first few comments seemed to support the positive view.

I’m going to play Chernabog’s Advocate here and take the other path. I don’t think Walt Disney would have taken the time to Blog, or to Twitter, or to set up and maintain a Facebook page. And I’ll tell you why!

With so many books written about Walt Disney, it is easy to get a reasonably clear picture of the man and his methods. And by reading up on his early years up to the days before his passing, one thing seems to stand out: Walt Disney didn’t do all of the actual work himself. He didn’t animate his films. He didn’t build the technology used in the Parks. What he did do, and did better than anyone else, was come up with the ideas that no one else had thought of.

He was an Idea Man.

Of course, as an Idea Man, he would have considered the use of all available technology and how it could enhance his connection to the public. Anything that could have promoted his latest project would have been explored. So the various aspects of the Internet would have been explored.

But once explored, would Walt Disney himself have utilized them? Would he have taken the time to build a Facebook page and regularly chat with all who visited? I think it is safe to say that Social Media would not have appealed to Walt. For here was a man with few friends. A man who seldom attended parties or public functions if he could avoid it. And something else is of interest.

When asked for autographs at Disneyland, he would often refuse, because it slowed him down and made it impossible to get his work done. He would recommend that the person(s) write the Studio and request an autograph, and that then one would be sent to them. Did Walt himself sign those autographs? No. He had someone else sign his name for him!

With these things in mind, it is hard to believe that Walt would have taken the time to set up and maintain any of the Social Media accounts that we make such free use of today. But he may have had someone else do it in his name!

The Point: Walt likely wouldn’t have Blogged himself. But really, would we want him to use his time telling us what he had for lunch? Or would we rather he used his time to Imagineer?

Would Walt Disney have Blogged?

Ask a Disney Question: Top Four Table Service Restaurants.

Ask a Disney Question: Top Four Table Service Restaurants.

This question comes from Jennifer, who wants to know:  What are “your top 4 table service meal restaurants”?

Jennifer, thanks for your question and for reading the site.  Great question and I actually have a new one to add.  Here they are in no particular order:

Via Napoli in Epcot’s Italy pavilion, this place is new and amazing.  Disney finally got pizza right with their wood fired pizza with fresh mozzarella. The ricotta fritters served with a pitcher of chocolate syrup and whipped cream are worth the trip alone. The dining room is open and pretty and you can see the three large wood burning ovens and the pizza prep area if you go to the back of the room. If you’re on the dining plan, this restaurant is only one table service credit and probably the best buy on site right now.  It’s also still possible to get a walk-up. I highly recommend it.

California Grill, located on the top floor of the Contemporary Resort.  It’s the classic Disney signature dining experience.  The service is very good and you can’t beat the view of  Seven Seas Lagoon and the Magic Kingdom. It’s one of the top restaurants on property just for the view, but the food also makes it worth a trip.  It’s all good, but they really shine when it comes to sushi, appetizers, and desserts.  Try to get a reservation during Wishes.

Artist Point, located in the Wilderness Lodge.  The dining room here looks different than any other restaurant on site, with tall ceilings and wood accents. It really does feel like you’re in the Pacific Northwest.  I know that some people have had less than stellar meals here, but I think it’s one of those hidden treasures on site where you can usually get a reservation and a reliable steak.  The mushroom soup is incredible and the desserts are as well.   There’s nothing on this menu that isn’t familiar and yet it’s also not ho-hum.  Bonus points for being able to accommodate large groups easily.  Visit during Christmas so you can sit out by the fire in the lobby afterwards and soak up the holiday spirit.

Boma, located in Animal Kingdom Lodge. I’m not a buffet fan so this is a hard one for me to like, but the food is so fresh and there’s so much variety, you can’t help but like it.  They’ve also got a great selection of desserts.  They’re small, two-bite morsels that are signature level quality.

Hope that helps!
