Happy Haunting! Returns Oct. 30-31 to Downtown Disney

Happy Haunting! Returns Oct. 30-31 to Downtown Disney

This article comes to us from Kristin Ford at The Daily Disney.

Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party is sold out for Halloween, but that doesn’t mean you can’t trick-or-treat at Walt Disney World. Downtown Disney’s Happy Haunting! event offers free sweets and entertainment from 5 to 9 p.m. Oct. 30 and 31 again this year.

Families have a mile-long celebration — partying from the West Side through Pleasure Island and into the Marketplace. The Treat Trail includes about 20 stations, where treat bags and candy will be distributed to the young and young-at-heart. Last year, maps for the event were available in most stores.

The folks at Disney World describe this year’s entertainment as “slightly scary ghost storytellers, Halloween performers, a super freaky-cool DJ and a mega mix of world music makers fill the streets, all performing live.” In past years, the group of kids I have been with loved the storytelling — the performer was dressed as a witch and used a puppet; the magician’s tricks amazed them; and they couldn’t get enough of the dance party.

Trivia

How many ribs are served at the Pioneer Hall “Hoop-Dee-Doo Musical Revue” nightly?

About 800 lbs. One rib weighs about 8 ounces.

What is the method of application and the pattern of the shingles on the Meadow Trading Post at Fort Wilderness?

The shingles are Cedar Shake shingles, the heavy kind (1 1/8″ thick) and are layered with tar paper. The book Roofers Handbook by William E. Johnson describes application. The publisher is Craftsman Book Co. and the book can be obtained at any construction bookstore.

    What architect designed Fort Wilderness?

Dick Kline at Walt Disney Imagineering

How many miles of canals in Fort Wilderness?

    4 miles

Is there a lawn mower imbedded in a tree at Fort Wilderness?

Kind of. There is a tree, called “The Lawn Mower Tree” that has lawn mower parts exposed. There is a blade which is relatively easy to see near the base. It is located about 100 feet away from the marina building, five feet off the path leading from pioneer hall to the marina. There is a sign which describes the tree.

What were the antique trucks that used to sell groceries in Fort Wilderness in the 70’s?

During the 1970s, Fort Wilderness guests did not have to go past the edge of their campsite for grocery supplies. Two FOT’s (Funny Old Trucks) traveled from site to site each morning and evening, selling fruits and vegetables, bakery goods, milk and the like from built-in racks and crates. One truck was made from parts of several other vehicles. The other was an actual antique: a 1928 Double A Ford. Guests knew the trucks were coming by the sounds of an old “ah-ooo-gah” car horn or a cowbell clanging just beyond the trees.

Wasn’t there a cow with Mickey Mouse markings at the campground?

There was! Minnie Moo, a Holstein cow born with a silhouette of Mickey’s ears on her side, arrived at Walt Disney World Resort in 1990 from Minnesota and lived first at Grandma Duck’s Farm at Magic Kingdom and was moved to the Petting Farm at the Tri-Circle-D Ranch at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground. In 2001, she died at age 15.

Where is all that jovial singing coming from each night?

At Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground, guests can roast marshmallows with Disney characters during Chip ‘N Dale’s Campfire Sing-A-Long, a nightly event that culminates with a classic Disney movie in a theater under the stars. This free event, which features a 30-minute fire lighting ceremony, rousing group renditions of favorite camp songs and appearances by Chip and Dale, is open to all Walt Disney World guests, not just those staying at the campground.

The show consisted of Walt Disney himself taking Reems on an extensive behind-the-scenes tour.

Walt Disney Pictures ‘Tangled’ Fun Facts

Walt Disney Pictures ‘Tangled’ Fun Facts

    MAKING IT HAPPEN

    • “Tangled” marks Walt Disney Pictures’ 50th full-length animated feature.
    • Directors Byron Howard and Nathan Greno both became interested in careers as animators after visiting Disney’s Animation Studio at Walt Disney World. While waiting to get accepted into the program, Howard served as a tour guide and spent his days on the outside looking through the glass at animators at work.
    • Rising stars Byron Howard and Nathan Greno take the helm, infusing the fresh talent of the animation industry’s newest generation of directors. Howard directed Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “Bolt,” the 2008 animated comedy adventure that grossed more than $300 million worldwide and earned two Golden Globe® nominations (Best Animated Film and Best Original Song), and an Oscar® nomination for Best Animated Feature. Greno, a 14-year Disney animation veteran, served as head of story on “Bolt,” and has animation and/or story credits on “Mulan,” “Brother Bear,” and “Meet the Robinsons.”
    • Animation supervisor Glen Keane’s real life daughter, artist Claire Keane, was responsible for designing and painting the storytelling mural that adorns the walls of Rapunzel’s tower home. In real life, Glen drew inspiration from his daughter in helping to conceptualize the Rapunzel character, recalling her irrepressible nature and penchant for drawing on walls.

    A HAIR-RAISING ESCAPADE

    • Rapunzel has 70 feet of golden hair and more than 100,000 individual strands
    • Special software had to be created to simulate movement for the hair, no one had ever animated that much hair before and no leading lady has ever had that much hair before!
    • If all the hairs on a single head of hair 12 inches long were laid end-to-end, they would stretch 26 miles. If all the hair on Rapunzel’s head were laid end to end they would stretch for 1,820 miles.
    • Ten women from the production grew their hair out during the making of the film; ultimately each cut about 10 inches of hair to donate to an organization that makes real-hair wigs for people who’ve lost their hair due to illness.
    • Hair software engineer Kelly Ward (one of three software experts charged with creating the hair simulation for Rapunzel and all of the film’s main characters) got her computer science PhD in the study of hair, and has spent the last ten years specializing in that area. She is considered one of the leading experts in her field.

    DETAILS, DETAILS

    • The film features an exciting climactic scene with a dazzling, lantern-filled skyline. Every lantern has its own animated fire that contains 10,000 micro points of light. The highest lantern count in a shot is 46,000 lanterns, which equals 460 million points of light!
    • The waterfall and stream in the tower valley were animated to match the characteristics of streams and waterfalls in California’s Yosemite. The effects supervisor took a two-day trip and shot more than 150 video clips for reference. The art directors were then able to pick out their favorite characteristics. More than 10 million individual water droplet “points” make up the waterfall.
    • Grizzly River Run in Disney’s California Adventure Park was used as inspiration for water leaks on the rickety wood dam that bursts. In the film’s final scene, 23 million gallons of virtual CGI water were released in the collapse of the dam.
    • The immersive fog that creeps in around Gothel and Rapunzel at the campsite is also intended to symbolize the emotional effect of Gothel clouding Rapunzel’s mind.
    • More than 2,000 Mario Kart Races were played by the production team in an effort to stay sane through the long hard hours!

    CUE THE EXTRAS

    • The “Tangled” animated cast includes five main characters, 21 thugs and 38 townspeople. Leading up to the film’s dramatic lantern scene, the Disney effects team was called upon to create a crowd that consisted of nearly 3,000 people. This is the largest crowd that the Studio has ever created for a CG feature.

    Sit a Spell…

One of my favorite blogs ceased publication a few years ago. If We Can Dream It was a photo blog by Jessica L. and she had a fantastic eye for details at the Disney Theme Parks. Her strength was tying together little details to see a larger picture. She was also the founding member of the Crate Appreciation Society.

When I ran across theses benches on a recent tour with Foxxfur through the Maharajah Jungle Trek, I thought of If We Can Dream It. Besides being incredibly ornate, the benches provide a welcome respite and add tremendously to the area’s appeal and design.
