Ask a Disney Question: Breakfast, Lunch or Dinner at Princess Storybook Dining?

Ask a Disney Question: Breakfast, Lunch or Dinner at Princess Storybook Dining?

Kerry, one of our readers wrote in with the following question about Akershus, and the Princess Storybook Dining character dining: “One of my girls wants to go to Akerhause and eat this year. I have heard a lot of negative about the food. Was wondering if Breakfast or Dinner would be our best bet. Didn’t know what you or any of the readers thought.”

Thanks for that question!  Let me tell you, the opinions range all over the spectrum about dining at Akershus.  My family has been to Akershus twice for dinner, with a third time coming up this June, and let me tell you, we love it!  In addition, my wife and daughter have eaten there once for breakfast, and they enjoyed it then as well.  For breakfast, you are eating family style selections of eggs, sausage, and other standard breakfast dishes.  For dinner, though, you will start off with a cold buffet of deli meats, seafood, salads, cheeses, and bread, and then follow that up with one of the entrees that you have available to you.  If you are interested, here is the Akershus Dinner Menu. To my family, though, what separates Akershus from the rest of the Walt Disney World restaurants is the character interaction with the princesses.  Where else can you go, have breakfast, lunch, or dinner, and get pictures and autographs with Belle, Cinderella, Snow White, Princess Aurora, Jasmine, and Ariel?  We have seen all of these wonderful princesses in the times that we have eaten at Akershus, and we look forward to seeing them again.  For me, I like having dinner at Akershus — but I would imagine that you would like it either way.  My favorite dish on the menu is the Traditional Kjottkake, which to me tastes similar to shepherd’s pie, but they also have some other really good entrees.  The last thing I’ll add is that in addition to the food and princess interactions, you will also get a photo package as part of your dinner price, so enjoy that!

Thank you for your question, Kerry!  I’ll close by posting one of my favorite pictures from our last trip — my niece, daughter, and Cinderella!  Regardless of your choice, I hope you have a great trip on your next Disney World vacation!

The Webby Awards

On May 3, the 2011 Webby Awards winners were announced. Disney was recognized with two People’s Voice Awards for “Toy Story” and ESPN.

The Webby Awards have been called “the Oscars of the Internet” by The New York Times. Established in 1996, The Webby Awards is the leading international award honoring excellence and innovation found on the Internet in nearly 70 categories and various forms (e.g. websites, online film and video, applications, social media).

The “Toy Story” Official Movie Site, part of Disney Interactive Media, won a People’s Voice Award in the Website: Movie and Film category.

ESPN won its People’s Voice Award for ESPN Mobile in the category Mobile & Apps: Sports category.

As the name suggests, the People’s Voice Award represents the votes of the online community who visit the Webby Awards to choose from among the nominated works in various categories. Hundreds of thousands of votes are cast each year from a global Web community.

Two other Disney and Disney-related projects were nominated for a Webby. Disney.com’s “Tron: Legacy” was also nominated in the Website: Movie and Film category. The Muppets Kitchen with Cat Cora, was nominated for in Online Film & Video, Comedy: Long Form or Series.

“This year’s Webby Winners exemplify the type of profound effect the Internet is having on popular culture and the world at large,” said David-Michel Davies, Executive Director of the Webby Awards. “From Arcade Fire’s reinvention of the music video format with The Wilderness Downtown, or the New York Times coverage of revolution in Egypt and the Middle East, the Internet is the driving force of change in the world today.”

Now in its 15th year, The Webby Awards received nearly 10,000 entries, representing over 60 countries and all 50 states. The Webby Awards are presented by The International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences, whose members includes an Executive 750-member body of leading Web experts with backgrounds in various fields.

Wednesday with Walt: Oh, Sing Sweet Nightingale

Wednesday with Walt: Oh, Sing Sweet Nightingale

One of the most beautiful voices in Disney movie history, to me, was Ilene Woods who was the voice of Cinderella. I am writing about her today because Ilene was born on May 5, 1929.  There is an inspiring story between Walt and Ilene that not everyone knows and I wanted to share it with you.

We all know how extraordinary Walt’s creative genius was. He could envision things that had never existed before, and let his mind freely develop all of these extraordinary visions and concepts. One such incident happened as Walt listened to Ilene Woods during a recording in the sound booth. She was recording “Oh, Sing Sweet Nightingale,” which accompanies a touching scene where Cinderella is scrubbing the floors and longing to be carried away from her life of labor. As Ilene sang, Walt listened with his eyes closed, head resting in his hands, visualizing the images that would accompany the song.

As Ilene finished, Walt looked at her and said, “Ilene, can you sing harmony with yourself?” Ilene was a bit confused. Walt was talking about multi-track recording, a technology invented by Disney sound engineers for Fantasia. It enabled a singer to record her own voice, then sing in harmony with that recording. Ilene had never tried it before.

“As I was listening to you sing,” Walt continued, “I got a picture in my mind. Cinderella is scrubbing the floor. As she sings, a soap bubble rises, and her image is reflected in that soap bubble. Her image in the bubble sings in two-part harmony with Cinderella. Then another soap bubble rises and we have three-part harmony. And another bubble, and Cinderella becomes a quartet, and eventually a choir. I see all of these images in the floating bubbles and I hear your sweet voice repeated again and again, and it all blends so beautifully.”

Ilene was excited to try Walt’s idea. So Walt had the song re-scored for multiple voices, Ilene recorded it, and the Disney animators created images for that scene that are among the most memorable in animation history. You can watch the scene here if you would like to see Walt’s finished product.

Months later, when Walt saw the finished sequence, he turned to Ilene and said, “How about that? I used to pay three salaries for the Andrew Sisters, when I could have paid for just one of you!”

I read about this story in Pat Williams’ book, How to Be Like Walt: Capturing the Disney Magic Every Day of Your Life. Ilene Woods was a very sweet lady who was blessed with a beautiful voice and the privilege of meeting a truly gifted man who could give it wings!

Whatever happened to... Disney's DuckTales?

Whatever happened to Disney DuckTales? You remember the cartoon series that had such characters as Uncle Scrooge, Huey, Dewey, and Louie. It ran on TV from 1987-1990 usually in the afternoons after school.

DuckTales paved the way for future Disney cartoons, such as Chip ‘n Dale Rescue Rangers and TaleSpin. It also spawned two spinoffs – Darkwing Duck and Quack Pack.

Some other notable characters I remember are:

If you look at the picture above you can see the complete cast from Duckberg. DuckTales was a great show and to this day I can still sing the intro song. DuckTales ooooh ooooh..

Thinking back I also remember a movie they released after the TV show called DuckTales the Movie: Treasure of the Lost Lamp. It was good and from reminiscing I am going to have to see if I can find it for purchase. Amazon has the complete series on DVD available here. Which would be a good birthday present to myself

The last bit of Disney Merchandise I remember from Duck Tales was the Nintendo Game. From what I remember it was quite challenging and took up many of my afternoons after school. No cheat codes or Nintendo Power for me.

Here is the video from ScrewAttack:

DuckTales was Disney first attempt at Syndication and luckily it worked out well and opened the door to many classic cartoons from my childhood. I think Disneyworld needs to open a store with all the classic merchandise from these old cartoons and movies for the nostalgic people like myself.

Many of these classic cartoons, tv shows, and movies contributed to my Disney Addiction today.

If you remember DuckTales let me know what you remember in the comment section below.

MOVIEGOERS OF DISNEYNATURE’S TRUE LIFE ADVENTURE “AFRICAN CATS” HELP SAVE THE SAVANNA

Disneynature Collaborates with the African Wildlife Foundation to Help Protect 50,000 Acres in Kenya’s Amboseli Wildlife Corridor

BURBANK, Calif. (May 2, 2011) – Disneynature announced today that its “See ‘African Cats,’ Save the Savanna” campaign will help protect more than 50,000 acres of land in Kenya’s Amboseli Wildlife Corridor on behalf of the moviegoers who came out to see Disneynature’s motion picture “African Cats” during its opening week (April 22-28, 2011). A portion of the proceeds from the opening-week ticket sales will be donated to the African Wildlife Foundation (AWF) through the Disney Worldwide Conservation Fund to ensure the future of lions, cheetahs, elephants, zebras, giraffes and a host of other animals in the vibrant African savanna.

The area to be protected equates to 100 Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Parks or more than twice the size of Manhattan. The AWF will be working to establish the Amboseli Wildlife Corridor, a passage between the Amboseli, Tsavo West and Chyulu Hills National Parks that is frequently used by a variety of wildlife.

“We’re so proud that audiences nationwide have embraced the film and the ‘See “African Cats,” Save the Savanna’ initiative,” said Alan Bergman, president of The Walt Disney Studios. “The conservation efforts Disneynature has supported so far span the globe—from planting trees in Brazil, to preserving coral reef in The Bahamas and now protecting this essential passage in Kenya—they’ve become an extraordinary part of our films and audiences have played a key role in helping our planet.”

“The ‘See “African Cats,” Save the Savanna’ program transformed the moviegoing experience into tangible on-the-ground conservation action,” said Dr. Patrick Bergin, CEO, African Wildlife Foundation. “The commitment of Disneynature combined with the passion of moviegoers will raise critical funds to conserve the land that the magnificent species featured in “African Cats” call home. Through this amazing collaboration, we celebrate our 50th Anniversary together with Disneynature and all the people who are helping establish the Amboseli Wildlife Corridor.”

While the opening-week ticket sales will help protect more than 50,000 acres of the Amboseli Wildlife Corridor, the conservation efforts tied to “African Cats” do not end there. Additional collaborations are committed to adding at least another 15,000 acres to the program–from the sale of artwork and jewelry inspired by the film, to the sale of Jordin Sparks’ “The World I Knew” single, to the Cast Member Earth Month pledges across the Walt Disney Company, plus more. These programs, many of them ongoing, support the “Save the Savanna” initiative, which will have a positive long term and sustainable impact on the animals and people of Africa.
“See ‘African Cats,’ Save the Savanna” continues Disneynature’s conservation efforts, which began with its first release, “Earth” (2009), for which three million trees were planted in Brazil’s Atlantic Forest. The program in support of “Oceans” (2010) helped establish 40,000 acres of marine protected areas in The Bahamas, which contain miles of vital coral reef.

“African Cats” is in theaters now.

ABOUT THE MOVIE
An epic true story set against the backdrop of one of the wildest places on Earth, “African Cats” captures the real-life love, humor and determination of the majestic kings of the savanna. Narrated by Oscar®-nominated actor Samuel L. Jackson, the story features Mara, an endearing lion cub who strives to grow up with her mother’s strength, spirit and wisdom; Sita, a fearless cheetah and single mother of five mischievous newborns; and Fang, a proud leader of the pride who must defend his family from a rival lion and his sons. Disneynature brings “The Lion King” to life on the big screen in this True Life Adventure directed by Keith Scholey and Alastair Fothergill (“Earth”). An awe-inspiring adventure blending family bonds with the power and cunning of the wild, “African Cats” leapt into theatres on Earth Day, April 22, 2011. ABOUT DISNEYNATURE
Disneynature, the first new Disney-branded film label from The Walt Disney Studios in more than 60 years, was launched in April 2008 to bring the world’s top nature filmmakers together to share a wide variety of wildlife subjects and stories with theatrical audiences. “Earth” (opening Earth Day 2009) was the first film to premiere domestically under the new label, and garnered a record-breaking opening weekend for a nature documentary. Its “Buy a Ticket, Plant a Tree” initiative led to the planting of three million trees in Brazil’s Atlantic Forest. Hitting theaters on April 22, 2010, “Oceans” was the third highest grossing feature-length nature film in history. Its “See ‘Oceans,’ Save Oceans” initiative helped establish 40,000 acres of marine protected area in The Bahamas, preserving essential coral reefs. Walt Disney was a pioneer in wildlife documentary filmmaking, producing 13 True-Life Adventure motion pictures between 1949 and 1960, which earned eight Academy Awards®. New Wearables by Her Universe Offered at Star Wars Weekends 2011
Star WarsTM Fangirl Apparel from Her UniverseTM to be Offered for the First Time at Star Wars Weekends at Disney’s Hollywood Studios theme park

Returning to Star Wars Weekends at Disney’s Hollywood Studios theme park in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. as Celebrity Host of “The Clone Wars: Behind the Force,” actress Ashley Eckstein (voice of Ahsoka Tano on Star Wars: The Clone Wars) will also be bringing an all-new, unique range of Star Wars fangirl-focused products to the month-long event at Walt Disney World Resort. Available for the duration of Star Wars Weekends 2011, Eckstein’s line of Her Universe apparel and accessories was created as a response to the ever-increasing demand for fashionable “geek chic” products among the growing community of female fans.

“In addition to a product line that already includes female-focused shirts and undergarments, Her Universe will be premiering two new shirt designs at this year’s Star Wars Weekends event. Featuring images of Jedi Master Yoda and other famous characters from the beloved Star Wars Saga, both designs will be offered in female sizes with female fits – and, for the first time ever, two popular Her Universe designs will also be available in children’s sizes. The new designs will be available exclusively for a limited time at Disney’s Hollywood Studios during Star Wars Weekends 2011.

New Wearables by Her Universe Offered at Star Wars Weekends 2011
“As the voice of Ahsoka Tano, it warms my heart to see an increase in young girls who are now Star Wars fans because of The Clone Wars,” says Eckstein. “However, it bothered me when those little girls had to go to the boys section to buy their Star Wars shirts. Now little girls can buy shirts that are specially made just for them!”

In addition to regular autograph signings each weekend, Eckstein will also be available for special merchandise autograph signings each day inside the theme park where her exclusive Her Universe apparel will be sold.

“Disney’s Hollywood Studios has played a huge part in my life,” says Eckstein. “Growing up in Orlando, my dad worked for Walt Disney World and I was at the theme park the first week it opened in 1989. It was a dream of mine to follow in my father’s footsteps and work for Disney. On my 16th birthday, I applied for a job at the ‘happiest place on Earth’ and was assigned to Disney’s Hollywood Studios where I would spend my weekends dancing in the parades and working in the restaurants! Now, to return to Disney’s Hollywood Studios for Star Wars Weekends as a host and a designer is magical!”

Running every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from May 20 through June 12, Disney’s Star Wars Weekends is an annual event at Disney’s Hollywood Studios theme park celebrating the Star Wars Saga, as well the animated television series Star Wars: The Clone Wars. In addition to offering fans a unique opportunity to join Jedi Masters, Sith Lords and Star Wars celebrities for special shows, presentations and memorabilia, the 2011 event also marks the launch of the all-new Star Tours attraction: Star Tours –The Adventures Continue. Getting in Shape for Disney World

Getting in Shape for Disney World

I think most of us are not where we want to be as far as weight and fitness goes. I have been going to the gym for quite some time and just finished P90x workouts. Still I have a ways to go to get ready for Disney World this September.

I signed up for this website called Spark People a few years ago in attempts to get in shape. It is free and will track, monitor, and assist you with getting in shape. It was great and I used the site for about a month till I just got busy with other things like this website!

Well as baby number 2 has come, along with winter, and life I find myself again not quite where I want to be. So I have fired up the old Spark People site and actually created a page for Chip and Company.

It is called:

Getting in Shape for Disney: Chip and Company

You can go there an create an account for free and join us get in Shape for Disney World.

So if your like me and have a Disney Vacation coming up soon and would like to be able to handle the daily walks, the standing, and the nutrition of visiting the Disney Parks. Head on over and join Spark People and then join the Chip and Company Spark Team.

See you there!
