Spaceship Earth is a magnificent structure and a true marvel in its own right. It is an architectural wonder and one of the few true geodesic spheres in the world. It’s not just a pretty face either. One of the issues designers faced was what to do with the water from the occasional rain shower that occurs in Florida. They actually designed a channel system in each panel of the sphere that gathers and directs all of the runoff so that it ends up in the World Showcase Lagoon. Can you imagine what it would be like if that water ran down the sphere and ended up at the base – Oh My wet, wet, wet.
Now that you know how much I enjoy that magnificent structure I have one issue with it. As beautiful as it is, as structurally amazing as it is, and as iconic as it is the way it stands; it lacks personality. It did have personality for a while at the time of the Millennium Celebration and for several years after. We had a wonderful parade then also but that’s another subject for another time. For the Millennium, we got that spectacular Magic Wand. I know there may be one or two folks out there who don’t agree but please don’t be haters, I really liked it. It really gave Spaceship Earth the personality it lacked. Beautiful – yes, magnificent – yes, awe inspiring – yes, personality – no; it really livened things up.
It’s gone now and I can live with that. I still love Epcot and all that it represents. I still love Spaceship Earth and stand in awe every time I see it. But really, really, really, I did like the wand because of the excitement it generated in me when I saw it for the first time on each visit. One thing I did forget to mention, it did bring Mickey to Epcot in a huge way. Thanks for putting up with my rant and as always, enjoy your visit to Walt Disney World!!
