Walt Disney World Hollywood Studios: The one ride I MUST ride

Walt Disney World Hollywood Studios: The one ride I MUST ride
Rock 'n' Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith: My MUST ride!

In the conclusion to my series on the one ride at each park that I must ride, today I’m taking a look at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.  If you remember, my must ride at Magic Kingdom was Big Thunder Mountain Railroad.  My must ride at Epcot was Spaceship Earth, and my must ride at Disney’s Animal Kingdom was Expedition Everest.

Today, my must ride at Hollywood Studios is the Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith!  That roller coaster was something that I always wanted to try, but for whatever reason never did – until this past summer.

I decided that no matter what else I did on this trip, one thing that I was not going to miss was riding the Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster.  The time finally came when we got our FastPasses, got in line, and walked right through to the front.  In fact, we went so fast that we didn’t even notice the stretch limos and how they were taking off.  To top off what is perhaps the best first ride I have ever had, we were seated in the very back of the coaster!

We got in, got ready for the start, and watched as they counted down the time before we left.  Then, when we started, we were off!  0-60 in 2.8 seconds!  This ride has it all, a corkscrew, a loop-de-loop, and some incredible twists and turns!  The track is all indoor, and it is in the dark, but there are some really neat road signs done in neon colors that provide the illumination you need.  And before I forget, the entire ride is put to the incredible music of Aerosmith

After not riding the roller coaster at all in any of our previous trips, I made up for it during this past trip.  We rode it four times while we were there, and I plan on riding it many more times when we go down this coming June.  The Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster became my must ride at Hollywood Studios that first ride, and it catapulted all the way to the status of my favorite Disney World ride, and my favorite roller coaster I have ever ridden.

If you have never ridden the coaster before, I highly encourage you to try it out at least once!  Even if you are not a roller coaster fan, to me the adrenaline rush that comes with this ride will quickly turn you into a fan of the genre!

What’s Your Jedi Name?

Dave Filoni and Aljon Go

In order to get your Jedi first name:

1) You must take the first 3 letters of your last name.
2) Then you must take the first 2 letters of your first name.

To get your Jedi last name
1) You must take the first 3 letters of your motherís maiden name.
2) Then you must take the first 3 letters of the town or city you were born in.

My Jedi name is “Go-Al Ocasea”.

Here’s something fun to do, especially with your kids.

Once you have a name for you and your child, have a picture taken of you along with them dressed up in some Star Wars robes. It’s really cool if you are able to get a shot or two made at Tatooine Traders/Star Tours at Disney’s Hollywood Studios! Don’t forget the Lightsabers! Create a certificate with their name on it signed by you, their Jedi Master using their new Jedi name. Now you have a cool scrapbook keepsake.

Disneyworld Planning 101 – Shopping smart for tickets

Disneyworld Planning 101 – Shopping smart for tickets

The Magic Your Way ticket system lets guests decide what ticket features best fit their Disney vacation plans … and that’s what they buy.  Guests decide the number of days and whether optional features; park hopping, visits to Disney attractions outside the theme parks and “non-expiration” of tickets are important.  Here are some price and value examples…

Per-day ticket costs decrease for longer stays.  A seven-day ticket without optional features brings down the per-day cost to less than half the price, per day, compared to seven individual one-day Base Tickets.  And the per-day cost of a 10-day ticket is less than one-third the price, per day, compared to 10 individual one-day Base Tickets.

The Water Park Fun & More option can produce significant savings for recreation and entertainment outside the theme parks
.

Here’s what you need to know about the option:

  • It provides admissions to the guest’s choice of Disney’s Blizzard Beach water park, Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon Water Park, DisneyQuest, Disney’s Oak Trail golf course and ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex.
  • The number of admissions it provides varies depending upon the number of days of the Base Ticket (the option added to a one- or two-day Base Ticket provides two visits to the guest’s choice from among the listed attractions; added to a seven-day Base Ticket, it provides seven visits).
  • It costs $54.  Considering that one-day admission to a water park is $40-$46 or to DisneyQuest is $36-$42, substantial savings are possible.

The Park Hopper option can enhance the value of the vacation by allowing a guest to take advantage of special fun offered at different times of day at different Disney theme parks.  Other potential Park Hopper benefits:

  • If the vacation stay is longer, “hopping” is perfect for repeating favorite attractions at the various parks.
  • If the guest is staying “on property,” park-hopping can be the ticket to extra time in the parks (more about this under “Making the best use of time”).

Kids under age 3 are provided free admission to all Walt Disney World theme parks.

So shop smart and don’t hesitate to call Disney and ask questions!

Disney World Quick Tips – Don’t Miss The ‘Train Setup’ At Epcot

Disney World Quick Tips – Don’t Miss The ‘Train Setup’ At Epcot

After you visit the Germany Pavilion and head towards Italy make sure you stop and admire what is called the “Train Setup” just past the Pavilion.  It’s a delightful little model of a German town with incredible detail. You will thoroughly enjoy it, particularly those of you who are model train enthusiasts. Everything is in perfect scale with one exception. On occasion, one of the local creatures (gecko) can be found sitting on or around one of the structures. It does look a bit odd but makes for a terrific photo – perhaps on our next visit I’ll be able to get a shot of one.

Disney World Quick Tips – Don’t Miss The ‘Train Setup’ At Epcot

Is it a super duper attraction? No it isn’t but it is a nice little diversion and just one of the thousands you will find around Epcot, particularly in the World Showcase. Is it worth a special trip to Epcot to see? No it isn’t but it is one of those things that most of us seem to rush on by while trying to get to the “biggies”. We all need to rush a bit less and enjoy the detail that the Imagineers have placed virtually everywhere at Walt Disney World.

Disney World Quick Tips – Don’t Miss The ‘Train Setup’ At Epcot

I hope you will all stop by this little display the next time you are strolling through Epcot’s World Showcase. It won’t take long to look it over and even snap a few photos. The little things like this add so much to a Walt Disney World Vacation. As always, enjoy your visit to Walt Disney World!!

Disneyworld Planning 101 – Getting the most out of your visit

Disneyworld Planning 101 – Getting the most out of your visit

How can a you get the absolute most theme park fun and value out of your Walt Disney World visit?

Get to know the Area! Do your research, and Ask questions.

Several examples are:

While the four Walt Disney World theme parks are all created for family fun, virtually any guest familiar with Disney World has a “favorite park.” That’s because the parks’ themes vary dramatically!

From lands of whimsy in Magic Kingdom to worlds of scientific and cultural accomplishment at Epcot to streets, sets and backlots of show business at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, to realms of animals living, extinct and imaginary at Disney’s Animal Kingdom.

You are immersed in those thematic worlds through stories “told” in attractions and experiences. But the methods of immersive storytelling are many. Sometimes a physically interactive entertainment concept is used, with guests being drawn into the action and becoming stars of the show. Sometimes ride systems carry guests on journeys that range from tame to wild – just like the stories. And sometimes the experience is physically passive, designed for the senses to “drink it in.”

With “homework” ahead of vacation, you can customize an itinerary to suit your interests as well as considerations such as age, height restrictions and ambulatory limitations.

A valuable source of information relating to “Traveling With Little Ones” and “Guests With Disabilities” is www.disneyworld.com or if you visit Chip and Company every day were bound to teach you a little something we have learned from either myself or my talented staff of writers.

Oldies But Goodies – What Should We Expect From A Walt Disney World Vacation?

Oldies But Goodies – What Should We Expect From A Walt Disney World Vacation?

I hate to start by saying It Depends but when we, as Seniors, travel to Walt Disney World we have the flexibility and the luxury to make that vacation exactly what we want it to be so long as we are traveling by ourselves or with like minded seniors. We are not locked into being anywhere at any special time and the only commitment we have is to doing exactly what we want to do. If you are traveling as part of a mixed generation group the rules are different, after all, family peace and contentment is extremely important.

As a couple or small group of seniors there are a number of options for a vacation theme:

  • All Inclusive – Do as much of everything as you can, focusing primarily on the theme parks. It also includes time at Downtown Disney and perhaps even a water park. You might also consider things like parasailing and/or a Characters In Flight balloon ride. This is for the enthusiastic and high spirited Senior.
  • Focus On Dining – If you enjoy fine or even quirky dining, Walt Disney World will give you the opportunity of a lifetime to experience an enormous number and variety of particularly fine and/or fun restaurants. These run the gamut from the Whispering Canyon Cafe to Victoria and Albert’s with every experience  in between. Sure you can do other things but you focus on the joy of fun and fine dining.
  • Golf – Lots of seniors love golf and Walt Disney World is an ideal place to pursue that love. There are four championship courses and one nine hole course on site and Disney resort hotel guests experience a variety of perks including free transportation to the courses to meet their tee times. A surprising number of us Oldies play a lot of golf while on vacation.
  • Hanging Out – It may seem unusual to go to the #1 tourist attraction in the world and primarily spend your time just hanging out at your resort hotel  or just traveling around the 42 square miles of Walt Disney World and never go to a theme park. Unusual yes, but it happens. Many of the Disney resort hotels are lovely and offer a lot of extras if you look for them. These extras range from beautiful pools to spa treatments and also include boat rentals and fishing trips.

These are just a few things you might expect if you theme your vacation to the things you love to do. That’s the beauty of a Walt Disney World vacation, you are not required to do anything or are you prevented from doing anything you would like to do. Your vacation is what you want it to be and how you want it to be. It’s all up to you what you choose to do. Have fun with it and as always, enjoy your visit to Walt Disney World!!

Is A Disney Internship Right for You?

Is A Disney Internship Right for You?

When I was in high school, there was a group of young people who came from around the U.S. and performed concerts; they were called Up With People. Being a very outgoing teen who dreamed of becoming a singer one day (pre-American Idol), I was very interested in joining this group. This was, of course, before home computers and certainly before the internet so information on joining such a group was not readily available. I never did join Up With People but they are still around, and have been since 1965 — long before I ever saw them. By delivering a message of goodwill around the world through international travel, community service and performing arts, they offer young people a very unique way to experience the world.  Still, not everyone likes to sing or dance, nor are all people interested in traveling to other countries or living with host families. Also, it costs quite a bit to join.

But how about living at Walt Disney World, or any other Disney park, while being paid? If that sounds good to you, you might be interested to know that a great opportunity for young Disney fans is an internship at the Disney parks. It is a wonderful way for young adults to have a chance to meet people from all over the world as Disney recruits individuals from many different countries and origins; not to mention the fact that guests come from all over as well. My little cousin has just become an intern — a Disney cast member! I am so excited for her to have this opportunity and I wanted to pass on some information about the process for any young person out there who might  be interested in becoming one too. First, I have to give a shout out to Jonquil — Congrats, sweetie! Way to go!

Here are the steps to take if you are interested in such an opportunity:

  • Check the Disney website for internship opportunities available in the area where you are hoping to work.
  • Apply for internships in the areas for which you are qualified; there is a wide variety of positions, such as special effects, film making, writing, production, planning and design, merchandise and more. Be sure to pay close attention to the requirements before applying as there are positions for high school graduates (CareerStart), college students and college graduates.
  • Review the appearance guidelines under the document entitled, “The Disney Look.” There are extensive guidelines and some of them might surprise you.
  • Additionally, you can sign up on the homepage for email alerts when positions become available.

In my opinion, this would be a great experience for anyone who is a Disney lover with an adventurous spirit. It is also a great way to receive free admission to all the parks and discounts on food and merchandise, while being paid to work. It would  be a fun way to meet people from all around the world. You can check out all the details here.

If you will be applying, I certainly wish you the best of luck!

Deluxe Dining, More than a Meal

Deluxe Dining, More than a Meal

If you have experienced a Disney Magic Your Way Package, you are probably aware of the options for the Disney Dining Plan. Each plan has its own value and each option appeals to a different vacation experience. I have traveled to Disney numerous times with various travel parties: my husband and I, my husband and I with my 9 year-old stepson and our annual family vacation (all 10 of us!) During our many trips to Disney we have come to value the deluxe plan.

If you’re like most, your first reaction when you saw the word “Deluxe” was “too much food!” It seems this is the immediate response when deluxe is mentioned, but for our family the value in the deluxe plan extends far beyond a mere meal.

The deluxe plan allows each person 3 “points” (3 meals a day). There are only so many hours in the day and in Disney they fly by, no one wants to sacrifice their valuable time in the park rushing to eat or worried about missing an advanced dining reservation. For us, sitting down 3 times a day is overwhelming, but it’s beyond our food fixation to sacrifice surf and turf for a hamburger and fries; so we began seeking an alternate option that would allow us to enjoy our delicious meals and not sacrifice our valuable park time.

Our 3 points per day are put to good use with a two-part plan: A character breakfast and a signature dinner (which require 2 points). Planning this way allows us to get our quality time with our favorite Disney friends in a relaxing, fun environment. There’s no waiting in long lines in the heat to hear “I’m sorry, they are going to take a break now, we’ll return in 20 minutes”, no one but a parent can comprehend the reality of 20 minutes in the heat with a 4 year old who wants to meet her favorite princess! Our first trip to Disney with my step son (who was 6 at the time) was laden with hysteria that we were going to miss one of his favorite characters, we were constantly on the prowl, fumbling for autograph books and the camera, and the ever present black sharpee. After seeing our photos with skewed smiles, disheveled looks and on more than one occasion a sharpee stained cheek or forehead we said “no more”. It’s a far more enjoyable experience to have your Mickey waffles and cup of coffee and allow your favorite friends to come to you: character breakfast, the perfect solution for time management and character crisis aversion.

The second part of our deluxe plan is signature dining. If you are traveling with children, chances are they aren’t interested in a meal and would rather press on full steam ahead through the park and ride all the favorites “just one more time!”  But for the parents who have been covering Disney territory all day, chicken fingers and fries doesn’t always cut it! Signature Dining offers more than just a meal it truly is an experience. For example; your precious little Prince or Princess can dine in Cinderella’s Royal Castle, while you are treated like a King and Queen and during your meal the photos your family took with Cinderella before heading to the dining room are magically presented to you, at no additional cost.

Many signature restaurants offer spectacular views (you can even view the Magic Kingdom fireworks at select locations!) delights in culinary cuisine, and a relaxing environment. You can share a famous Cobb Salad at the Hollywood Brown Derby, enjoy surf and turf overlooking the Seven Sea’s Lagoon at Narcooses, or watch the animals wander the savannah while you dine at Jiko.

If you are celebrating a special occasion, try a signature restaurant! I have experienced the royal treatment for celebrations at signature restaurants! I was engaged at Cinderella’s Castle, celebrated countless birthdays and special occasions at various restaurants and have personalized menus from my favorite restaurants from when we celebrated a special event.

While you may think “we aren’t celebrating anything special” or that your little one’s will be out of place at a signature restaurant don’t forget-it is Disney after all, and everything is designed around families, even yours!

Affordable Disney Vacations: Saving Time AND Money with Disney’s Magical Express

Many people travel to Walt Disney World by flying. For some, there is no other realistic way to get there. Others, who could drive, often choose to fly anyway. My family is in the second group: while I personally don’t mind driving, my family feels otherwise.

So we typically fly these days. But the challenge here, if you are trying to have a Disney vacation that is as affordable as possible, is that airfare is way expensive. So unfortunately, a major portion of any Disney vacation budget ends up being spent on transportation.

But the good news is that Disney does make things easy here, by providing complimentary transportation to and from Orlando airport, for guests of any of the Walt Disney World resorts. The better news is that Disney’s Magical Express will save you money AND time….and it’s fun to use too!

With that in mind then, if you are staying in a Disney resort, and have never used Magical Express before, what do you need to know?

To start, once you have your flight information, you will need to contact Disney (407-WDW-MAGIC or 407-939-6244) and provide them with that information. It is recommended that you do this at least 6 weeks prior to your trip. Several weeks before you leave, you will receive Magical Express luggage tags for each person that will be traveling, along with a booklet that has information for when you arrive, as well as a voucher for boarding the bus when you arrive at Orlando airport. (Note that you will receive only 1 tag per person, which assumes you will not be checking more than one bag per person. If you need more, contact DME to request additional tags.)

Place the tag on your luggage at home, and then check it as usual at your home airport. When you arrive at Orlando Airport, there is no need to go to baggage claim: Disney does that for you.  You will instead go to the DME boarding area (there are signs, and a map in your booklet), and you will be directed to the correct line. Note that there is not a separate DME bus for each resort, so you will “share” your bus with guests of several nearby resorts. With this in mind, you should allow for up to an hour from the time you are boarding your bus, until you arrive at your resort. But the time goes so fast on the bus: they show a video to, you know, get people excited about arriving at Disney World…which works pretty well. 🙂

And this is the best part. Once you get to your resort, check in (and if you did online check in before you arrived, this will take only a few minutes), and then you are on your way to the parks. Meanwhile, Disney’s Magical Express is handling your bags, and when you arrive in your room later on, they will be there waiting for you. (Be aware, however, that DME does say that it can take up to 4 hours for your bags to arrive in your room, so keep that in mind and pack your carry-on accordingly….more about this in a minute.)

It should be noted that you always have the option, if you wish, to not put the luggage tags on your bags, and when you arrive at MCO, you will then proceed to baggage claim first to retrieve your luggage. Once you have them, you can then go to board the Magical Express bus. It should also be noted that if have a late night arrival (after 10 p.m.) you do not have a choice: you must claim your own luggage before boarding the bus. Even so, while you may not be saving time here, you still have the benefit of complimentary transportation.

Now I will be honest: the system doesn’t always work flawlessly, and I have to share that on one trip we returned to our room in the evening, to find not the two suitcases that should have been there…but one. My husband’s was there, but mine was MIA…

As it turns out, the fault was with our airline that apparently felt my luggage should not go to Walt Disney World, but to some other destination. To the credit of DME, they handled it all: found out when my suitcase was supposed to arrive at MCO, when it did in fact arrive at MCO, when it got on the truck headed to Disney World, and then they let me know when it showed up at our hotel. I was a wreck…but they couldn’t have been nicer. (And I learned a BIG lesson, especially if you will be arriving in the evening: ALWAYS pack what you need for overnight in your carry on. Just In Case.  🙂  )

All in all, I really believe that DME is a pretty good system, and offers some real savings to folks who fly into Orlando. Not so long ago, once you landed at MCO, you then had the expense of either renting a car, or paying for a taxi or limo service to get you to your hotel…which adds to your already high transportation budget. And if you are staying off property, that is still the case. This is why you want to always compare ALL the costs of staying on Disney property vs. off property, to see what the most affordable option for your family is. Perks like Disney’s Magical Express go a long way in making a Disney resort stay more affordable than you might think!

So, you might be asking, what happens when it is time to go back home? How do you get back to MCO?

Well……That is a post for next week! 🙂

Note: If you have never used Disney’s Magical Express before, be sure to read the FAQs on the Disney website to help in your planning.

Nancy, her husband and college-age daughter live in the Baltimore MD area, but consider Walt Disney World their second “home”. She started her site The Affordable Mouse, as a way to share ideas about how to plan affordable Disney vacations. Her favorite things at Disney World (in no particular order) are Soarin’, most of the food in World Showcase, Illuminations…and that special brand of Disney magic that you can’t find anywhere else.

Family Fun Weekend Recap: Fiesta Weekend

Family Fun Weekend Recap: Fiesta Weekend

Disneyland introduced their all new Family Fun Weekends, starting January 14 and continuing on through March 6. The festivities can be found at the Big Thunder Ranch festival arena. (I’m glad it’s back there because then I get to pass the goats on the way. I love the goats.)

The first weekend (January 14-16) was Fiesta Weekend. Characters like Mickey, Minnie and Donald were dressed in their fiesta best, and Mariachi Divas performed for the crowd. (If you’ve never seen them before, you can catch them performing at California Adventure from time to time.)

Here are some photos from the event! And be on the lookout for my next post about last weekend’s Kickin’ Country Weekend!
