Disney Dining Plan or Deluxe Disney Dining Plan… Which To Choose?

Disney Dining Plan or Deluxe Disney Dining Plan… Which To Choose?

I enjoy dining and trying new places and was very excited a few years ago when they came up with the Disney Dining Plan. It gave me the ability to not have to worry about what I was going to order, price didn’t matter and I could try new restaurants every night. Since the start of the Disney Dining Plan I’ve done both the original Disney Dining Plan and the Deluxe Disney Dining Plan.

The Disney Dining Plan includes 1 snack, 1 quick service (non-alcoholic drink, entree and dessert or combo meal) and 1 table service (non-alcoholic drink, entree and dessert or full buffet) per person per night for $45.99 ($2 more during peak season) for adults and $11.99 ($1 more during peak season) for children.

The Deluxe Disney Dining Plan includes 3 meals, 2 snacks and a resort refillable mug per person per night for $78.99 for adults and $21.99 for children. The Deluxe plan lets you choose whether or not you want quick service (non-alcoholic beverage, entree and dessert or combo meal) or table service (non-alcoholic beverage, appetizer, entree and dessert or full buffet).

Both of the plans require that everyone in your room be on the same package and it must be purchased for the entire length of your stay. Other important information to mention is that gratuity is not included. It used to be, but Disney has since removed it. Another important thing to note is that in the morning you don’t dessert so you get juice instead.

Now on to which one is for you… Are you someone that likes to eat a table service meal every day, try new restaurants and check out those that are more expensive? If so, then the Deluxe plan is for you. The way that I use this plan is that I arrive early on the first day of my trip and leave in the evening on my last day so I get one more day to use the credits. That way, I dine at no more than 2 locations a day and try some of the restaurants that require 2 table service credits. I often choose to have breakfast table service or a very early lunch and then have a late dinner. I use some of my snack credits during the trip when I need to but enjoy saving some so that I can take items home like fudge or treats from Goofy’s Candy Company. If we drive down, I save a credit so that I can stop by Earl of Sandwich and pick up a sandwich or salad to put in the cooler to have on the way home. You can even take it on the plane if you’d like. One of the best things, that saves you tons of money with this plan is the refillable resort mug. At $2.39 for a drink you’ll find that you can get a really good deal out of this. For example, say your vacationis 7 days and you visit the food court in the morning and in the evening (twice a day) to get drinks, this would normally cost you $33.46 +tax. It’s one of benefits to this plan that frequently gets overlooked. This plan is also perfect for those that like to relax on their vacation and aren’t in a hurry to try to catch every attraction.

For those of you that aren’t wanting to spend a lot of time making Advanced Dining Reservations or spend much time sitting down in a restaurant, then the Disney Dining Plan would be the option for you. You aren’t as tied down with only having one table service a day, unless you decide to use 2 credits to dine at a signature restaurant or at one of the dinner shows. This is a great plan for those that like to fill their vacation full and try to see and do as much as possible. You can try some great dining options and not be tied down every day.

As far as which Disney Dining Plan is for you depends on really what it is you want out of your vacation. I don’t always do one or the other. It depends on the number of days that I’m visiting Walt Disney World and what all I want to accomplish. I will say that I’m much more likely to go with the Deluxe Disney Dining Plan when I book a long trip. That way I can try many new restaurants and still have plenty of time to see and do what I want at the parks and resorts.

If you have any questions about the Disney Dining Plans don’t hesitate to ask me questions. I’m more than happy to answer them.

Family Fun Weekend Recap: Kickin’ Country Weekend

Family Fun Weekend Recap: Kickin’ Country WeekendThis Family Fun Weekend was definitely entertaining. I’m not a super big country music fan or anything, but this was oodles of fun. Some of our favorite characters like Mickey, Minnie and Goofy were decked out in their best Western duds as they greeted guests and took photos, while Chip and Dale led some country line dancing lessons. (I caught Pluto line dancing!) We even had quilt makers!

Here are some of my photos from this weekend.

Family Fun Weekend Recap: Character Fan Day Weekend

Family Fun Weekend Recap: Character Fan Day Weekend

This past weekend was the much-awaited Character Fan Day weekend. Park guests could take photos with many different Disney characters, most of them rarely seen in the park. Characters included the Seven Dwarfs, Daisy Duck, and Snow White with the Evil Queen. Pictured above is Pinocchio, who ran out to pose for a picture just for me!

Sketch artists were also there, sketching characters for guests. Unfortunately the line was too long for me to get one, but they were still a cool sight to see.

On Friday the event was a huge hit; I’m sure it was on Saturday as well. Rain ruined Sunday’s character day — the festival arena was actually closed off by Disneyland security for a period of time. (I’m not sure if they re-opened it.)

All of my photos below are from Friday, as Sunday was rained out. Unfortunately I was unable to get photos of all the characters, as they rotated after a period of time.

Pinocchio also kept a younger guest entertained by playing around the umbrellas. It was so adorable!

Doesn’t Disney World Get Old?

Doesn’t Disney World Get Old?
Doesn’t Disney World Get Old?

This seems an obvious and reasonable question to ask frequent Walt Disney World guests. You may think Disney World would get old for visitors who have dozens of trips under their belts but the short answer is, “No.” Walt Disney World is continually evolving and growing which brings guests back time and again. Attractions are always being built, new promotions are announced, parades and nighttime fireworks shows are switched up. Let’s not forget that every season offers new things to experience in the “World;” Epcot’s International festivals, Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party, winter holiday events, marthon weekends, and Star Wars weekends are just the tip of the iceberg. And if that’s not enough for you, there are resorts in every price point and with many varied themes and hundredes of places to eat. Sure, there are attractions that are decades-old but even they have been updated along the way.

If you’ve been following along at Chip and Company, you may know our October 2010 trip was postponed until January 2011 and our January trip had to be cancelled. That means it’s been about nine months since I was last at Walt Disney World. Let’s take a look at just some of the changes that have taken place in this short period of time.

Attractions

  • Captain EO. I’ve never seen the original attraction. I have to say it’s not at the top of my list but now that it is at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, I’ll have to try it out.
  • The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh. Okay, so the attraction isn’t new, but the interactive queue is and from the pictures I’ve seen, it looks ah-ma-zing.
  • MuppetVision 3D. This family favorite attraction in Walt Disney World recently underwent a refurbishment that enhanced both the film and also the theater.
  • Tangled Play N Greet. Storytime with Belle is no more; this new play and greet area replaces it. Although it seems as if it may be geared toward girls more than my boys, I’ll have check it out in the name of research.
  • Duffy the Bear. I’m not sure if I can rightly call Duffy the Bear an attraction, but he does have his own meet and greet in Epcot.

Experiences and Entertainment

  • Magic, Memories, and You Castle Show. I was skeptical of this show until I saw the video. As part of the Let the Memories campaign, Cinderella Castle has images and photographs taken by PhotoPass photographers projected on to it nightly. The show is so much more than I expected.
  • Wild Africa Trek. This is a must-do on my list. This new, albeit expensive, tour takes guests behind-the-scenes of Animal Kingdom’s savannah. Get up close and personal with hippos and crocodiles.

Parades

  • Main Street Electrical Parade. Disney’s Main Street Electrical Parade returned to the Magic Kingdom as part of Summer Nightastic! after a long hiatus. Lucky for me, this popular parade’s run has been extended indefinitely.
  • Pixar Pals Countdown to Fun. I was a fan of the afternoon parade in Disney’s Hollywood Studios, Block Party Bash. Sadly, it has been retired. The new parade, Pixar Pals Countdown to Fun has been received with less than glowing reviews but I want to see it for myself.

Dining

  • Via Napoli. Coming from New Jersey, where there is a good pizza place on practically every corner, I’m really excited to try this new pizzaria which has received really great reviews.
  • La Hacienda de San Angel. This restaurant is located on a coveted piece of World Showcase Lagoon. With large windows in the dining room, diners are treated to spectacular views of IllumiNations, my favorite Walt Disney World fireworks show.
  • Karamelle-Kuche. The Germany pavilion is now home to a caramel shop. Although caramels are not my favorite, I think it’s worth stopping in for a sample.

Downtown Disney: Create-Your-Own & Customizable Souvenirs and Gifts

Downtown Disney: Create-Your-Own & Customizable Souvenirs and Gifts

One reason I enjoy visiting Downtown Disney at Walt Disney World is the shopping opportunities. But it’s not the standard Mickey t-shirt, which is certainly available, that draws me to Downtown Disney. It’s that many stores offer merchandise to customize and personalize.

Custom and Personalized Gifts at Downtown Disney Marketplace

At Arribas Brothers, guests can watch crystal items being made by glass artists and select from a number of items that can be etched with a personal message. Popular items include Mickey figures and a small Cinderella glass slipper. Engraving for metal jewelry and wooden keepsake boxes is also available.

Customized Mickey Mouse Ears. Photo by Gene Duncan/Disney.

Create Your Own Ear Hat, a small area located between the shopping spaces for Disney Design-A-Tee and The Art of Disney, offers the custom Disney item. Guests design a personalized set of the iconic Mickey ears. Just select the hat base from several colors, designs and styles, choose some ears, and add some patches and embroidery, and let the Cast Members construct the final product.

Hanes sponsors Disney Design-a-Tee, where guests personalize a t-shirt. Using a touch-screen kiosk, guests select the shirt’s size and color, then choose images from one of the offered themes (e.g. Princesses, Disney Characters, Pixar, Films) and add ready-to-use or custom text. In addition to a personalized souvenir or gift, Design-a-Tee offers an easy way to create matching shirts for your Walt Disney World vacation. Shirts take about a half-hour to make after orders are completed.

Looking for a Christmas ornament that will reflects the spirit of Disney and the holidays? Disney’s Days of Christmas celebrates all year round with its seasonal merchandise, and some ornaments can be personalized.

At the sports-oriented Team Disney, guests can get a custom-made baseball bat (mini or full size) laser engraved with a name, signature or logo. The store can also customize baseballs, helmets, or display cases.

Customized Shopping Experiences At Downtown Disney West Side

D-Street Vinylmation Creation Station, Downtown DisneyFor additional creative, customizable fun, visit Ridemakerz and D-Street at Downtown Disney West Side. Both these stores offer shopping as interactive, immersive experiences.

D-Street is the home to the popular and collectible Vinylmation figurines. It’s also the spot for guests to show off their artistic flair at the Vinylmation Creation Station, a table with hundreds of decorated 3” figures for inspiration. Guests can take a blank Vinylmation figure and decorate it with markers, eyes, stickers and small accessories. Artists: Don’t forget to sign your masterpiece.

At Ridemakerz, guests can customize racing cars and other autos, from a slick Corvette to a sturdy ambulance, tricking them out in various ways. After selecting the vehicle type, guests select various add-ons, including wheels and rims, stickers, bumpers and lights. Perhaps the main appeal of the Ridemakerz experience? Adding the remote-control option.

Customized Toys for Kids at Downtown Disney

Generations of families know Legos to be interactive fun. That sense of play exists the Lego Imagination Center, where guests can fill up buckets of mix-and-match Legos to create their own personal set.

Once Upon a Toy Shop is another toy lovers’ must-stop shop. Guests can create their own sets of classic toys, such as choosing a box full of body parts for Mr. Potato Head or a make-your-own Lincoln Log collection. A “Build Your Own Lightsaber” option allows “Star Wars” fans to take the Force home with them.

At the World of Disney, children (and kids at heart) can fill up a treasure chest of pirate’s booty in the Adventure Room. Pretty princesses can make their own tiaras and wands or fill jewelry boxes in The Princess Room.

T-Rex, the themed restaurant, offers a Build-a-Dino, related to the Build-a-Bear franchise, during which kids create a cute pre-historic plush.

More Downtown Disney Create-Your-Own Fun

The Spice & Tea Exchange, Downtown Disney. Photo by D.K. Peterson

Adults might like creating their own spice blends at The Spice & Tea Exchange, located inside Mickey’s Pantry, or order custom scents at Basin, the shop for homemade personal beauty products. These store are found at Downtown Disney Marketplace.

For inexpensive create-your-own souvenirs, seek out the Disney pressed penny machines that can be found around Downtown Disney. For $.51 each (one penny, plus two quarters), guests can squash a penny and impress upon it a Disney design. A very portable memento, there’s something about collecting pressed pennies that brings out your inner 10-year-old.

In the mood for tasty concoctions to please your taste buds? Guests can make their own snacks at Goofy’s Candy Co. Apples, Rice Krispie treats, cookies, pretzel rods, or marshmallows serve as the base for assorted toppings. At Disney’s Candy Cauldron, guests can have candy apples made to order by choosing a coating and a topping.

And that’s just a partial list of personalized merchandise at Downtown Disney. Guests can, among other things, have their silhouette captured or caricature created; visit the Hands Arts Memories booth for hand-painted handprints;  and get custom jewelry designed at Pick-a-Pearl and other kiosks.

While some of the same customizable items can be found at Disney theme parks, the concentration of such experiences at Downtown Disney helps me focus on shopping as its own creative pleasure. It’s these kinds of souvenirs and gifts that are fun to make, creating Walt Disney World memories that matches the merchandise.

Disney’s Animal Kingdom Opening Ceremony – Kinda’ Fun

Disney’s Animal Kingdom Opening Ceremony – Kinda’ Fun

We don’t spend a lot of time at Disney’s Animal Kingdom except to see some of the shows and hit a couple of the significant attractions. There are also lots of photo opportunities and we take advantage of those too. On our last visit, for some reason, we got there very early (for us) and had a chance to experience the opening ceremony. We travel to Walt Disney World very regularly and really didn’t realize that there was an official opening ceremony at the Animal Kingdom. It was very cute and actually quite fun.

It opens with Minnie, Goofy, and Pluto arriving in front of the Tree of Life in a safari truck and giving the usual rah! rah! (which we enjoy because it’s part of the show) for a few minutes.

Disney’s Animal Kingdom Opening Ceremony – Kinda’ Fun

After they finish, as if by Magic, Mickey appears in the distance right next to the Tree Of Life and lets us all know what’s about to happen and what’s going on at Disney’s Animal Kingdom.

Disney’s Animal Kingdom Opening Ceremony – Kinda’ Fun

After Mickey has finished with his bit of Disney cheerleading, our original friends, Minnie, Goofy, and Pluto tell us to “Let The Adventure Begin” and off we go into the park.Disney’s Animal Kingdom Opening Ceremony – Kinda’ Fun

You know what, it beats the heck out of just unlocking the doors and letting the crowds thunder into the wilds of Disney’s Animal Kingdom. I’m all for fun in most forms and this is cute, fun, and a great way to start your day. As always, enjoy your visit to Walt Disney World!!

Disneyworld Planning 101 – Making the best use of time

Disneyworld Planning 101 – Making the best use of time

If “a penny saved is a penny earned,” then what of time?  Shouldn’t it follow that saving time is also merit-worthy?  Certainly using time purposefully is important, given that a guest has invested both money and time in a vacation.  What is “purposeful” varies from person to person, however.  Some guests at Epcot once shared that they were so enamored with the gardens that they hadn’t done any attractions – but they weren’t complaining; rather, they were complimenting … and beaming.  Here are some ways to “make time,” save time, add time and use time during a Disney park visit…

Disney’s FASTPASS system allows guests to avoid waiting at designated popular attractions in all four Walt Disney World theme parks.

Here’s how it works:

  • At the entrance to attractions offering FASTPASS, two times are posted – (1) approximate wait time using the normal queue and (2) return time for FASTPASS tickets currently being issued.
  • If the wait in the normal queue is long, guests can choose to obtain a FASTPASS ticket (at no charge) with an assigned return time (an hour-long window) and then use the time until then to enjoy other experiences in the park.
  • Upon returning to use their FASTPASS, the guest can hop on the attraction with little or no waiting.

A “rider swap” program lets both parents enjoy a ride – one parent waits with a child who is unable to ride an attraction while one parent rides.  Afterwards, the other parent can board the ride with minimal wait time.

Tip Boards located at strategic “crossroads” in each theme park provide guests with a heads-up concerning attractions’ wait times.  Guests can save time – and “steps” – by consulting the boards throughout the day.

Extra Magic Hours provide guests of select hotels at Walt Disney World Resort an opportunity for exclusive time in a Walt Disney World theme park.  The details:

  • The exclusive time is one hour prior to scheduled park opening or up to three hours after park closing.
  • The park varies from day to day.
  • In all, there are up to 16 extra theme park hours available each week.
  • The time is exclusively for guests of the 24 Walt Disney World owned-and-operated hotels, and Walt Disney World Dolphin, Walt Disney World Swan, Shades of Green and the Hilton at Downtown Disney.
  • Disney water parks sometimes open one hour early for guests of select Disney resort hotels.
  • To take advantage of the additional time in the parks, guests must have a Magic Your Way ticket valid for the park(s) offering Extra Magic Hours – and, of course, their hotel ID.
  • The Park Hopper option on Magic Your Way tickets allows guests to take advantage of Extra Magic Hours in a park or parks different from where the guest spends the rest of the day.

Guests arriving at park opening frequently head to a favorite attraction and enjoy it before it gets busy.

Guests who decide to forego viewing a popular parade frequently discover it’s a time to experience a popular attraction with less wait.

Festivals and special events are times when the theme parks feature extra entertainment and excitement –included with regular admission.  Several long-running events are the Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival (spring), Epcot International Food & Wine Festival (fall), ESPN The Weekend (spring at Disney’s Hollywood Studios), Star Wars Weekends (spring at Disney’s Hollywood Studios), and elaborate decorations and seasonal entertainment at all four parks for the holidays.

The “best time” to visit depends.  The busier times to visit Walt Disney World parks are when school’s out for major holidays, the summer and three-day weekends.  The very busiest times typically are Christmas to New Year’s and around Easter.  Some considerations:

  • Avoiding the busy times likely means shorter waits for attractions and shows and better access to dining reservations.
  • Busy times can mean extended operating hours and sometimes special incremental entertainment.
  • Disney planners attempt to schedule periodic attraction closures for refurbishment at times other than vacation peaks.

Quick Service meals can cut down dining time – and sometimes cost. Addin flexibility because you can catch a gulp on the go without a reservation, and quick service can make consummate “good sense.”

Table Service restaurant experiences can enhance the theme park experience. There are restaurants that are worth the extra planning effort of a reservation, the extra time at the table, and possible extra expense.  These eateries, replete with elaborate theming, extend the entertainment experience of the park to mealtime.  Dining and relaxing in an ambiance reflecting a different time or place is an entertainment experience worth the time sitting.  Sometimes these restaurants serve up entertainment acts along with meals.  And sometimes the meal may be part of a package that provides preferred seating at no extra cost for a signature entertainment performance (such as Candlelight Processional at Epcot or “Fantasmic!” at Disney’s Hollywood Studios).

A longer stay can yield a vacation at a more comfortable pace.  Guest surveys show higher satisfaction ratings for longer stays – with “pace” typically cited as the reason.  After a week-long visit, guests have reported that they “didn’t feel rushed” and they “discovered a pool at the hotel.”

For a short-duration visit, make a short list of “must-sees” and “must-dos” based on the vacationing group’s interests.  One of the worst mistakes a guest can make is over-scheduling.  Be realistic in planning.  Don’t attempt to see and do everything.  Vacation shouldn’t feel like a track meet!  And remember to take into account any relevant factors such as height restrictions or ambulatory concerns.

Disney World Quick Tips – It’s Hokey and Goofy But It’s Still Fun

When I tell folks that I never miss the Country Bear Jamboree on a Walt Disney World visit the typical reaction happens. First there’s the condescending smile and the rolling of the eyes as if to say – oh well, he’s old and just reliving his childhood. Then you get the comments like it’s old and tired, the animatronics are ancient, the jokes are stupid, and the bears look like they have seen better days. I always answer each one of them with the same statement – I know, but I still enjoy it and that’s really all that counts. The music is lively, I know all the words, and I sing along with my beloved bears!!! Sure, that’s silly but humor me. Remember I’m old (at least that’s what the eye rollers and smilers seem to think) and I know what I enjoy.

Perhaps the best part of the show is the finale when all of the animals are lit up and singing at the same time. It’s not a Hollywood musical number but it’s very pleasant and just plain fun.

Disney World Quick Tips – It’s Hokey and Goofy But It’s Still Fun

Next time you’re walking through Frontierland and headed for Liberty Square take a few minutes to go into the Air Conditioned theater and sit down for a fun show (and a little rest too). It may not be the highlight of your vacation but I think you will enjoy it. As always, enjoy your visit to Walt Disney World!!
