Disney's Playdom Launches Deep Realms RPG for Facebook

Playdom today announced the launch of Deep Realms, the first game to bring the classic RPG experience to social gaming.

In Deep Realms players explore a rich fantasy world, making strategic choices that result in different but equally viable experiences. Players explore lush, detailed scenes and engage in turn-based combat against increasingly dangerous foes. By integrating social elements, such as avenging friends in player-vs-player combat and real-time cooperative boss battles, Playdom evolves the social RPG to the next level.

“We wanted to make a social game for core players, a game that we, as developers, would want to play,” said Playdom’s Executive Producer for Deep Realms, Alex Ou. “Deep Realms introduces the depth of console RPGs to social gamers with elements of interaction that go beyond those in the current generation of social games.”

Disney Dream – Patience for the Porthole

Disney Dream – Patience for the Porthole

When I booked my room aboard the Disney Dream, my goal was to get a room aboard the ship at the lowest cost.  I prefer to take more vacations per year, rather than staying in luxurious accommodations only one time per year.  So, when I received confirmation of my inside stateroom, I mentioned to my friend my accommodation type.  She exclaimed, “You will have a virtual porthole!”  She explained that for those few rooms aboard the Disney Dream without a window, a virtual porthole would be included.  Here the guests would see a view of the outside of the ship.  The added bonus was that Disney characters would also visit the porthole!

When we got to our room aboard the Disney Dream, we were quick to turn on the porthole by flipping on a switch beside the bed (you have the ability to turn it on or off throughout the day).  We found that we had a camera shot of Port Canaveral right there in our room.  As we unpacked, we would glance over to the porthole.  I mentioned to my family to be sure to look for Disney characters in the porthole.  After unpacking, we still had not seen any characters.  When it was nearly time for dinner, I went to the restroom to begin getting ready.  Right after getting in the shower, I heard my son exclaim, “I see UP! Daddy!”  So, I had missed the first sighting.  Wouldn’t you know it!

Not being discouraged, I began the final steps to being ready for dinner in the main stateroom while also trying my best to focus on the porthole.  Instead I spent my time helping tie shoes or look for the right socks for my son’s outfit.  I missed another 2 sighting, only seeing small bits of pixie dust fade from the porthole screen.

I only saw 2 different characters in the virtual porthole over the course of our 4 night’s stay aboard the Disney Dream!  Perhaps I just do not have enough patiences to watch the porthole.  Or perhaps I am a glancer, only giving the virtual porthole a few seconds of my time.  Who knows!  I will say that my son loved having the porthole there.  I loved being able to take a quick glance at it to see if we had arrived at port yet or had left for the open seas again.  Disney’s innovative ways always amaze me, even if I only get a few small glances!

When Natalie is not trying to find the characters in her virtual porthole aboard the Disney Dream, you can be found her at Meet the Magic for great tips on saving money for traveling to Disney!

Time is running out – Downtown Disney Area Hotels to Honor Teachers in 3rd Annual Contest

Time is running out - Downtown Disney Area Hotels to Honor Teachers in 3rd Annual Contest

Based on the positive response to their 2009 and 2010 initiatives to recognize and reward deserving teachers, the Downtown Disney Resort Area Hotels have partnered once again with AirTran Airways and Walt Disney World® to hold the 2011 A+ For Teachers at Downtown Disney contest.

The third annual contest, which kicked off on January 17, 2011 and runs until April 15, 2011, asks students in grades 1 through 12 to nominate their favorite teacher by writing a brief essay and submitting it via www.downtowndisneyhotels.com. The essay should explain how the teacher has made a difference in the student’s life and will be judged on its relevance to theme, creativity, originality, and the merit of the teacher’s accomplishments as outlined in the essay.

Ten national winners will be chosen, and those students and their favorite teacher nominees each will win a vacation prize package that consists of:

  • Four-day / three-night accommodations (for up to four family members) at one of the Downtown Disney® Resort Area Hotels
  • Free airfare to Orlando (for up to four family members) on AirTran Airways (only for non-Florida residents)
  • Four free Walt Disney World® one-day, one-park passes
  • Four free tickets to the DisneyQuest® Indoor Interactive theme park
  • Complimentary breakfast at the hotel each day (for up to four family members)

“Downtown Disney® Resort Area Hotels want to celebrate those teachers who truly make a difference in the lives of their students in spite of the many challenges their schools are facing,” said Laurence Richardson, chairperson of the organization’s marketing committee. “Each year we’re amazed at the stories students submit about their teachers; so it’s difficult to select just 10 winners. There truly are many gifted teachers who deserve the recognition this national contest provides.”

This year’s A+ For Teachers at Downtown Disney contest winners will be notified directly by May 15, 2011 and also announced on the hotels’ website and Facebook page at http://tinyurl.com/4l7ms95.

Tours Departing Daily – Delivering some of the best Disney Photos EVER!

Tours Departing Daily - Delivering some of the best Disney Photos EVER!

There are alot of great Disney Sites out there, catering to just about every Disney niche imaginable. Normally if I find a great site I will share it on Facebook or write up a quick Twitter link. For me to sit down and write up and article should show you how I especially love Tours Departing Daily.

Michaela Hansen, Matthew Hansen, Kevin Crone are three very close friends who enjoy hanging out at Disneyland and taking photos.

They take the most incredible photographs using a technology called HDR.

HDR stands for High Dynamic Range.  Our eyes are capable of seeing a huge range of light and color, moving from bright sunlight to deep shade.  A single picture is incapable of portraying such a range.  HDR photography combines multiple shots so that the final product more closely resembles what we see in person and our experience of being there.

If you want to see some of the most brilliant photos of Disneyland you have ever seen in your life please visit their website. You will find that you are speechless as some of the shots they post.

Rarely do I use the word breathtaking but their pictures truly are breathtaking.

Check them out today.

The Disney Fan Art Contest will feature the creative talents of D23 Members at the D23 Expo 2011 taking place this year August 19-21 at the Convention Center in Anaheim, California.  The contest puts the “spot”-light on One Hundred and One Dalmatians by inviting imaginative Disney lovers to create work inspired by the beloved animated film, currently celebrating its 50th anniversary. Winners, selected by a panel of Disney’s creative executives, will see their work prominently showcased in the D23 Expo’s Fan Art Gallery, themed to the infamous House of de Vil.

The deadline is April 4, 2011 so there’s still time for artists to submit sketches of their proposed work. As long as the final creation evokes One Hundred and One Dalmatians, the sky’s the limit for entries. There are some restrictions, however, so please read specifications carefully. For the entry form, click here; for more information, click here.

The D23 Expo—The Ultimate Disney Fan Event—brings the entire world of Disney under one roof, providing attendees with unprecedented access to Disney films, television and theme parks as never before.

Wednesday with Walt: Integrity

Wednesday with Walt: Integrity

I am sure almost all of us have been asked this familiar question when playing some type of ice-breaker game: “If you had to choose one word that defined you and your life, what word would it be?” Sometimes it is asked in a different way such as, “What is your legacy?”  or “What do you want to be remembered for?” Have you ever given that much thought?

If I had to think of a one-word description for Walt Disney, I would be flooded with visions of block lettering zooming on a superhighway in my mind.  Chief among them would be genius, diligence, compassion, tolerance and integrity. The definition of integrity is a firm adherence to a code of especially moral or artistic values. You might think that I am referring to Walt’s artistic side, but I am referring to his character.

To me, Walt was of exceptional character. I grew up believing that if you don’t stand for something, you’ll fall for anything. I am not one to speak up for myself, but when it comes to standing up for someone else I have no problem, especially when it is clear that someone is being unfairly judged or accused of something.

Walt Disney was a strong man. There was a common misconception that he was a sentimental softy. He was sentimental, that is true, but when the situation called for it he was tough. In “The Fantastic Walt Disney” published in 1964, Bill Davidson described a situation that happened once in the Disney Studios. He said:

“Not long ago a well-known executive came over from another film company to work as an associate on a Walt Disney production. The first day on the job the executive was annoyed by the sound of a lawn mower outside his window, and he shouted at the gardener to desist. An hour later the executive received a call from Disney’s secretary, informing him that Disney wanted to see him. The executive rushed over and Disney said, “You spoke harshly to that man. He’s been with me for twenty years. I don’t want it to happen again.” The executive mumbled a contrite, “Yes, sir.” Disney continued, “And there’s another thing I want you to remember. There’s only one s.o.b. at this studio – and that’s me.”

To some people that might seem like Walt was a cruel man. To me, it says that Walt had integrity. I am sure that if someone had done the same thing to the new executive after he had been in Walt’s employ for a while, Walt would have done the same for him. In fact, I have read many different articles, books, and excerpts from people who worked for Walt. When talking about him as a boss, many of them said time and time again that few workers who became established at Disney Studios ever left, voluntary or otherwise, and many were on the Disney payroll for their entire working lives.

It seems to me that there is not enough of this type of integrity today. I am not saying that we shouldn’t be tolerant, but people should stand up for what they believe in. All too often, the loudest voices are the ones who don’t have this kind of integrity. Grace is the gift we extend to those who wrong us, but integrity is what drives the heart to refuse to compromise on matters of principle.

Generations before us held onto it like it was gold. Maybe that’s what the seven dwarfs were mining for all along!
