Gold Medal Gymnast’s Kids Have Eyes on Disneyland, Not Olympics
While the world’s attention is focused on the thrilling competitions at the 2024 Olympics, one gold medalist’s family has their sights set on a different kind of magic. Shawn Johnson East, the iconic gymnast who captured hearts at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, is back in Paris to cheer on her fellow athletes. However, her three young children seem more interested in meeting Mickey Mouse than witnessing Olympic greatness.
“I don’t think they’re going to appreciate or understand any of it,” Johnson East confessed to E! News. “They’re most excited for Disneyland Paris.” While the 32-year-old is undoubtedly proud of her country and its athletes, she’s also embracing the reality of parenting young children.
Despite the kids’ lack of Olympic enthusiasm, Johnson East is determined to make the most of their Parisian adventure. She’s hoping her children will at least enjoy the vibrant atmosphere and perhaps develop a fondness for certain sports. “Drew does enjoy watching gymnastics strictly for the leotards,” she shared with a laugh.
With three energetic young ones, navigating the bustling Olympic crowds is a challenge Johnson East is facing with a mix of excitement and trepidation. “The only thing that I’m nervous about with Paris is it’s just a lot of people at the Olympics,” she explained. “There’s a lot of chances to not see a little kid, which freaks me out.”
But despite the potential hurdles, Johnson East and her husband, Andrew East, are thrilled to be back in the Olympic spirit. After missing the 2020 Games due to the birth of their son Jett, they’re eager to soak up the experience with their entire family.
As they embark on a five-week European adventure, the East family is ready for anything. From trains and planes to boats and automobiles, they’re determined to create unforgettable memories, whether it’s cheering on Olympic athletes or exploring the magical world of Disneyland Paris!

Tropical Storm Threatens Severe Weather at Disney World, Florida Declares State of Emergency
A strengthening tropical storm system in the Gulf of Mexico is raising concerns about potential severe weather at Disney World and across much of the Florida peninsula. In response, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has declared a state of emergency, activating resources to prepare for possible flooding, power outages, and damage to critical infrastructure.
The National Hurricane Center’s projections indicate the storm could move slowly, dumping heavy rainfall over several days, starting this weekend and continuing into next week. This extended period of rain raises concerns about flooding, particularly in low-lying areas.
Disney World, located in Orange and Osceola counties, is within the declared state of emergency zone. While the resort is known for its preparedness and has weathered storms in the past, the potential impact of this storm is being closely monitored. Visitors and residents are advised to stay updated on weather forecasts and follow any official advisories from Disney World and local authorities.
EPCOT’s Takumi-Tei restaurant, located in the Japan pavilion, has announced exciting updates to its menu, effective August 1, 2024. Known for its exquisite dining experiences, Takumi-Tei continues to elevate its offerings with new prix fixe “Omakase” multi-course meals.
According to the official Walt Disney World website, both prix fixe menus, “Omakase” multi-course meals, are now priced at $250 per adult, plus tax and gratuity. This marks a significant increase for the plant-based option, which was previously priced at $150. The children’s menu, designed for ages 8-12, remains at $100 plus tax and gratuity.

While you dine, live musicians and storytellers will present a musical journey through “The Lion King” soundtrack, using authentic African instruments and theatrical props to represent the story and characters. This dessert spot is sure to be a hit with your family, with handmade gelato, ice cream, cookies, candies and specialty treats served in a space full of bolts of fabric and costume models. And while she never looks back, you might have to do a double-take of the picture-perfect sculptures of both Edna and Jack-Jack — one hard at work, one hungry for “num nums!”

Be Prepared for the Chance of a Lifetime Aboard the Disney Destiny, you will encounter a fearsome crew of formidable foes throughout the ship — including Maleficent, Dr. Facilier, Cruella de Vil, Captain Hook, Mr. Smee and Oogie Boogie — and some of Disney’s most mischievous and misunderstood personalities – like Captain Jack Sparrow, Bruno and Loki. You’ll have the chance to interact with these villains, rogues and mischief-makers during all-new events and activities, as well as some of your favorite Disney Cruise Line programs, from a frighteningly fun dance party in Oogie Boogie’s shipboard lair to interactive Disney trivia that often gets interrupted by a cast of Disney villains.
Happy Haunts Materialize Foolish mortals will be welcomed to sip spirited craft cocktails among the 999 happy haunts of Disney Parks lore at the Haunted Mansion Parlor, a highly anticipated lounge that will first debut aboard the Disney Treasure this December.
At the Haunted Mansion Parlor, grim grinning guests will sample a selection of ghostly cocktails that capture the spirit of the story, while legendary characters from Haunted Mansion attractions around the world come out to socialize in mysterious ways (along with a few new seafaring arrivals).
Living a Legend – Wakanda Forever The Grand Hall of the Disney Destiny will be its most striking and prominent gathering space, welcoming you to a world of epic dualities: heroes and villains, adventure and relaxation. Inspired by the rich lore, distinctive style and vibrant palette of Marvel Studios’ “Black Panther” films, the Grand Hall will be Disney Cruise Line’s kingdom on the seas.
Presiding over the Grand Hall will be a stunning statue of T’Challa, the Black Panther: King of Wakanda, devoted son and beloved brother sworn to protect his kingdom — and the Disney Destiny.
Just off the Grand Hall on decks four and five, you will be able to write your own vacation legends at Saga, a central hub for daytime family activities and adult-exclusive evening entertainment. The two-story, state-of-the-art venue will host a variety of interactive shows and events in an elevated environment also inspired by the architecture of Wakanda.
Your Friendly Neighborhood Ship Decorator? For the first time in Disney Cruise Line history, a Marvel Super Hero will be the signature stern character on the Disney Destiny. This signature larger-than-life sculpture will showcase Spider-Man and his Spider-Bots, who are making a well-meant, if a bit haphazard, attempt at decorating the filigree on the back of the ship with their infamous spider webs.
Supreme Location, Strange Libations The Sanctum will be Disney Cruise Line’s first lounge inspired by the powerful sorcerers and mystical artifacts of Marvel Studios’ “Doctor Strange.” Like all Sanctorums, this centrally located venue will contain mystical items designed to aid sorcerers in protecting the world – but it will also be home to entertainment; a magical array or cocktails, spirits and coffees; and unique surprises from Doctor Strange’s New York Sanctum, including a circular mirror behind the bar that evokes the building’s iconic window.
Tony Stark-Approved Luxury In true Iron Man style, the Destiny Tower Suite will take the heroes and villains motif to new heights — literally. This Marvel-inspired penthouse will honor Iron Man with a luxurious take on the sleek, industrial designs of Tony Stark. Set high in the ship’s forward funnel, this one-of-a-kind suite will offer incredible views of the top deck and beyond through an expansive two-story window and nearly 2,000 square feet of living space.
The Destiny Tower Suite and all concierge-level accommodations will receive a premium level of dedicated service and access to exclusive areas and amenities, including the Concierge Lounge and private sun deck. On the Disney Destiny, the lounge will be outfitted with art that celebrates the Avengers, Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, and will be inspired by the sophisticated styling of their Manhattan headquarters. This hero-worthy retreat will be the perfect place to relax, sip a cocktail, and enjoy complimentary food and beverages throughout the day.
It’s Time to Save the Galaxy (Again) The Disney Destiny will also feature two guest-favorite experiences from the Disney Wish and Disney Treasure that are inspired by the Marvel Universe.
Worlds of Marvel, Disney Cruise Line’s Marvel-themed dining experience, will host an out-of-this-world celebration starring the lively duo of Rocket and Groot from the blockbuster Marvel Studios “Guardians of the Galaxy” films. During a tribute to the many Super Heroes of the Marvel Cinematic Universe who keep the world safe, Groot will take over the proceedings and bring the festivities to the next level, organizing the ultimate surprise party for his friend Rocket — just in time for dessert. The story will unfold onscreen while you eat to the beat of an “awesome mix” of hit songs and test your knowledge of the Marvel Universe with trivia and activities for the whole family.
In Disney’s Oceaneer Club, kids ages 3 to 10 will become the heroes of their own epic Disney adventures at Marvel Super Hero Academy, a high-tech Avengers headquarters where young “recruits” are trained to be the next generation of Super Heroes alongside some of their favorite Avengers.

Whether you’re looking for fine dining or to treat yourself, the Disney Destiny has a little something for every adult onboard.
A suite of premium dining venues will include Palo Steakhouse, combining authentic Italian dining with the refinement of a modern steakhouse; Enchanté by Chef Arnaud Lallement, offering gourmet, French-inspired cuisine in a romantic and intimate setting; and The Rose, an idyllic setting for a pre-dinner aperitif or after-dinner cocktail.

The Disney Destiny will sail year-round from Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, Florida beginning in November 2025. The ship will embark on an inaugural season of four- and five-night cruises to The Bahamas and Western Caribbean, including visits to one or both of Disney Cruise Line’s island destinations – Disney Castaway Cay and Disney Lookout Cay.
