Disney World Quick Tips – Mousekeeping

Disney World Quick Tips - Mousekeeping

Here’s a Disney World Quick Tip!

Tipping is an important part of my Walt Disney World budget planning. I budget for Mousekeeping, bell service, and food servers at all my favorite table service restaurants. Each day, I leave a special Mousekeeping envelope with a few dollars inside when we leave  for the day, and I have been blessed with awesome mousekeeping staff when I have traveled.

Now, making towel animals is not a prerequisite for landing a job with the Disney mousekeeping department, but I wanted to share the treasures that Susan and I found waiting for us after long days in the parks. Our special room attendant, Gilma, at the Port Orleans Riverside left us these special mood boosters each day of our stay.

On Thursday, we received a rose.

On Friday, it was sweet swans.

And Saturday was a couple of little ghosts!

Disney World Quick Tips - Mousekeeping

Aside from the artistic gifts, when they have the special talent, Mousekeeping is there to help make your stay better. Here are some tips on ways they can help you. If you need bed boards, bed rails, extra pillows and blankets, baby cribs, safety outlet coers, extra hangers, or to request that your room be cleaned at a specific time, touch HOUSEKEEPING on your in-room phone. If you have forgotten anything at home, or if there is any way they can help to make your stay more enjoyable, I have found often that they are happy to help.

When we were leaving on Sunday, we got to meet Gilma and thank her personally for all our treasures and for taking good care of us. Thank you, Gilma, for giving us that extra special something to come home to each day! We really appreciated it!

Disney Advanced Dining Reservations Now Requiring Credit Card Hold

Disney Advanced Dining Reservations Now Requiring Credit Card Hold

Making Advanced Dining Reservations at Walt Disney World seems to be an endless process. You do research on the restaurants, check the menus, check your schedule, make a draft, re-draft (countless times!) and then wait with baited breath for your 180 day mark.

It’s not unusual for your choice restaurants to be unavailable, even as early as your 180 day mark. Disney has discovered this is most likely occurring from guests who make dining reservations and don’t show up.

There are a handful of restaurants that already require a credit card hold or advanced payment; Cinderella’s Royal Tale, the Spirit of Aloha Dinner Show, Hoop-Dee-Doo Musical Revue and Mickey’s Backyard Barbecue. These will continue to hold the full amount of pre-payment and require a 1-day cancellation notice to avoid being charged. No shows on these reservations will result in your card being fulled the full amount, yikes!

October 26, 2011 the list of restaurants requiring a credit card hold will expand to the signature dining locations and other popular picks.
Guests will have to provide their credit card information to make a reservation at the following restaurants:

• 1900 Park Fare
• Akershus Royal Banquet Hall
• Artist Point
• California Grill
• Cape May Café
• Chef Mickey’s
• Cítricos
• The Crystal Palace
• Flying Fish Café
• The Garden Grill
• Hollywood & Vine
• Jiko – The Cooking Place
• Le Cellier Steakhouse
• Narcoossee’s
• ‘Ohana
• Tusker House Restaurant
• The Hollywood Brown Derby
• Victoria & Albert’s – $25 per person
• Yachtsman Steakhouse

Reservations at these restaurants that aren’t cancelled 24 hours in advance will be charged a fee of $10 per person, yikes!

We are still awaiting clarification about the process, but it’s our understanding that reservations booked before October 26, 2011 will still be held. Reservations made after October 26, 2011 will require the credit card hold for the restaurants listed above.

Using your dining plan shouldn’t be a problem, it’s our understanding the credit card will not be billed unless you don’t cancel 24 hours prior to your reservation time.

We will keep you updated as more detailed information is released and will be updating you on the booking process (and its glitches) as things develop!

If you need to cancel your dining reservation call 407-WDW-CNCL, or go to www.Disneyworld.com/dining or visit guest relations at the park.

I suppose time will tell if this solves some of the problems with ADR’s or if it simply allows Disney to make extra money on people who change their minds! What’s your take on the situation?

Top 5 Disney Cruise Line Must Have’s

Top 5 Disney Cruise Line Must Have's

There’s nothing I love more than a trip on Disney Cruise Line but after a few rookie packing mistakes I’ve learned what I can’t live without. Make sure you put these top 5 items on your packing list and you’ll be sailing happy!

1. Highlighters-Grab a pack of multicolored highlighters to mark the events your family doesn’t want to miss in the personal navigator, color code if necessary!

2. A hanging toiletry bag-The split bath is a lifesaver but a hanging toiletry bag will take you even farther. It saves space on the counters, which is limited to begin with and you don’t have to worry about your stuff falling over or where anything is!

3. A day bag-Pack your travel documents (including passports and Disney Cruise Line documents) medications and a bathing suit in a day bag so you can start having fun right away!
*tip: Your “day bag” can double as a useful tote throughout the cruise. Use it for your books, sunglasses, pool essentials or to put clothes in for the Vista Spa!

4. Magnets-Make a statement on your stateroom door with fun Disney magnets. You can make cute affordable magnets at home. It’s a fun project for the kids (and crafty mom’s!)

5. A sweater-Even if your destination is somewhere warm pack a sweater or multi-functional pashmina. The decks get cold at night and the restaurants are usually chilly.

Planning 101 – Scheduling Time for Free Disney Resort Fun

Planning 101 – Scheduling Time for Free Disney Resort Fun

If your family loves fun and games, allow for some flex time when planning your Walt Disney World itinerary. Once you check into your Disney resort, you will be given a schedule of resort activities. These are free activities for the whole family. During my recent stay at the Port Orleans Riverside, these were the activity offerings.

Movies Under the Stars – nightly at 8:00 p.m.

Sun: “Toy Story”

Mon: “Hocus Pocus”

Tues: Halloweentown High”

Wed: “The Emperor’s New Groove”

Thurs: “Spooky Buddies”

Fri: “The Lion King”

Sat: “Tangled”

Poolside Activities  (Sun-Sat)

Games 1:00-2:00 p.m.

Ol’ Man Island Pool Party 4:00-5:00 p.m.

Sassagoula Nighttime Jamboree  5:00 p.m. (Sun-Sat)

Campfire on de’ Bayou  6:30 p.m. (Sat-Sun)

Each resort will have similar, typical offerings that are a fun way to enjoy the resort and meet some new friends. So if your family is outgoing, plan on some resort fun and take advantage of this time together. Happy memories are made everywhere at Disney!

International Dragon Boat Festival at Walt Disney World Resort

The International Dragon Boat Festival is today at Walt Disney World Resort, but don’t let the name fool you. There aren’t any fire-breathing dragons involved. Just some really long and funky-looking boats with dragon heads and tails being rowed feverishly by 20, plus a drummer and a guide.

It sounds like a quirky sport, but race organizers say Dragon Boat racing is actually the fastest-growing water sport in the country. Saturday’s race at Downtown Disney is certainly growing in popularity. Last year the number of teams doubled to about 70. This year there will likely be even more.

And the teams come from places far beyond Central Florida. Even as far away as Canada and Trinidad. The lure is apparently the opportunity to take part in this ancient Chinese sport that dates back more than 20 centuries and re-emerged in Hong Kong in the mid-1970s as an international endurance sport.

Today, it’s become a community event embraced by novices as well as experienced men and women rowers competing in nine divisions, including a special one promoting breast cancer awareness. I’d say every team competing in that division is already a winner in my book.

If you want to watch the races, check out the colorful dragon boats and soak in the music, entertainment and post-race celebrations. The event runs from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the Village Lake near Downtown Disney.

The Hidden Mickey Guy reveals almost 400 in latest edition

Steve Barrett is on the hunt again and his latest search for hidden Mickeys has taken him to Disneyland.

Hidden Mickeys are partial or complete images of Mickey Mouse that Disney “Imagineers” have designed to blend into their surroundings in such a way that their presence is not immediately obvious.

Known to his fans as the Hidden Mickey Guy, Barrett has spent the last 10 years searching out Hidden Mickeys throughout the Disney parks and cruise ships, documenting the results in a series of three books.

This third edition of Disneyland’s Hidden Mickeys: A Field Guide to Disneyland Resort’s Best Kept Secrets, published by The Intrepid Traveler, features more than 100 new hidden Mickeys for a total of nearly 400.

Searching for hidden Mickeys is always a work in progress. Old hidden Mickeys will disappear when attractions are closed or remodeled, but Disney Imagineers, the people who design and build the attractions, resorts and entertainment venues, are adding new ones all the time to keep devotees on their toes. And Barrett is hot on their trail.

He personally searches out and documents all hidden Mickeys as he finds them or as they are reported to him by fans, who are gratefully acknowledged at the beginning of Disneyland’s Hidden Mickeys.

Barrett has designed the Hidden Mickeys series as scavenger hunts with an optional scoring system. You’re given clues about Mickey’s hiding places, then offered additional hints if you get stuck. Remember that searching for hidden Mickeys is always a work in progress: Old hidden Mickeys will disappear when attractions are closed or remodeled, but the Imagineers are adding new ones all the time, to the delight of fans. Be sure to check out the hidden Mickeys found in new rides such as Star Travel – The Adventures Continue, Disney Jr. Live on Stage!, and The Little Mermaid.

To allow fans to get a jump-start on the fun, The Intrepid Traveler is offering the new edition of Disneyland’s Hidden Mickey’s for just $7.77:

Casey’s Corner is a vintage, baseball themed dining spot offering delicious hot dogs, Cracker Jacks, and their famous corn dog nuggets. Seriously, these are amazing. Top 5 Streetmosphere Acts at Disney World

Some theme parks may have better roller coasters. Some theme parks may have your favorite non-Disney animated characters. Some theme parks may even have tastier food. But no theme park in the world has better Streetmosphere than Walt Disney World!

And to prove it, here is my short list of the Top Five Streetmosphere Acts:

5. Walt Disney World Band

You know – the one that marches in Parades and performs at special occassions and when dignitaries visit. But any band, from the full marching kind to the trios or quartets that strut their stuff and play their music, will all give you an earful of musical goodness! The best part of these performances is that they tend to be spontaneous! The fun part is being surprised by them when they appear.

4. World Showcase Players

Fortunately, these players do hold to a schedule, so you should be able to plan to see them during your next trip. When you pick up your Park Map at the entrance, just ask for a performance schedule. The UK, China, and France Pavilions have all had excellent shows. And most of the other Pavilions have cultural music or crafts to round out the experience.

3. DHS Streetmosphere Actors

As good as the EPCOT Streetmosphere is, I feel that no Park does it as well as Disney’s Hollywood Studios! Maybe it’s because of the sheer number of different characters and skits that are offered. You may find yourself auditioning for a movie, being a contestant in a dating game, or simply accosted by any number of weird and wonderful oddballs! And be warned: These wacky ‘people’ just love to drag unsuspecting spectators into the ‘act’! But then again, that’s the fun of it.

Top 5 Streetmosphere Acts at Disney World

Dora Nesmond: “I’m NOT dead!”

 2. DiVine

Take a stroll through the passages of Disney’s Animal Kingdom and you just may catch a glimpse of something strange and magical. She’s somewhat shy, but comes out of the foliage when the mood strikes her. Towering over the guests, DiVine walks, but never talks. Her graceful movements (all done while on stilts) will move you to awe! If you’ve seen her come to life, you are among the lucky few.

1. Dapper Dans

I make no apologies for placing the Dapper Dans in the top spot, as I am a rabid fan. I love music from all eras, but the Barbershop Quartet configuration of singers is one of the best, and is not to be missed! These colorful straw-hatted men never fail to entertain as they interact with the crowds (especially the children) while they sing period specific tunes along with select Disney classics. And if you visit at the right time of year, you just may see the Dagger Dans or the Cadaver Dans (depending on which Park you visit), an eerie variation that is simply spooktacular!

Disney World Planning Tips – Pass Time in the Car, Pack a Goodie Bag

Walt Disney World Sign

A car ride to Walt Disney World can be long and boring, especially for children in the backseat.  Each trip I try to find creative ways to pass the time for my daughter.    One tradition that I do every trip we take to Disney is creating a goodie bag for my little one to dig through once we hit the road!

For months before our trip I keep my eyes peeled for some fun activities to stash away.  The Target dollar bin is a great place to find a lot of Disney themed toys and books.  Walgreen’s, Party City and of course the Disney Store are great places to look as well! Not only is the goodie bag fun to rummage through on the way,  it also can get them pumped for what is to come!

Here are some ideas if you want to put together your own goodie bag:

  • Pen and Paper – My daughter loves to draw maps in the car when we are going places.   She pretends like she knows where she is going and it can be really fun having her tell you which way to turn.  It can also be a lot of fun to have your child make a list of everything they want to do at Walt Disney World.  My daughter made a “list” of all the snacks she wanted to sample and which Princesses she really wanted to see!  She also drew pictures and we played some tic tac toe along the way!  Pen and paper is a great inexpensive time passer.
  • Water Bottle – It is fun to pick up a water bottle of your child’s favorite character and let them drink out of it for the week!  It is great to have in the car on the way down because you can pick up something to drink for your child at the gas station and pour it into the water bottle that has a lid or spout for a spill free trip!  You can also use it throughout the Parks and pour free ice water into it from any counter service location.
  • Magnetic Dolls – Magnetic Dolls are such a treasure!  Magnetic Dolls are the new version of paper dolls!  You can dress them up and add accessories.  I have found the dolls in all of the Disney Princesses!  They are great for car rides and hotel rooms because the pieces stick to the tin!  Amazon has a great selection of these magnetic dolls, check them out HERE.
  • Window Clings – If you have a child that sits near the window, window clings are a great way to occupy the time.  The holidays are a great time to pick up clings, but more and more stores are carrying them year round.  I found Disney Princess clings at The Dollar Tree.  Kids can stick them on the window and tell a story with them and rearrange with ease the whole car ride!
  • Gadgets – In today’s world I do not know one kid who doesn’t love a good gadget, I don’t even know an adult that would turn down something electronic!  A few ideas are a new game for a leapster, a hand held Yahtzee game or even just a new app on your iPhone!  This year we decided to get my daughter her own digital camera!  This was a huge hit, not only in the car but during the whole trip!   It is really fun to go back and see what our Walt Disney World vacation looked like through the eyes of our daughter.  It gave her some ownership to our trip and turned out to be a great gift!
  • Snacks – Snacks are an important part of any road trip.  I always try to go out of my way to find some really fun snacks that my daughter normally doesn’t have at home or that may be a seasonal item.  This year our trip was in the fall and they had just put out the Halloween shaped marshmallows!  This was a huge hit and we talked about our plans for Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party while snacking!  Marshmallows are also great because they don’t leave hands too sticky and crumbs don’t get everywhere.

So there are some fun ideas to be on the lookout for for your next goodie bag!  It is a really fun tradition that my mother actually started with me and I plan to continue on.  This years goodie bag kept my daughter occupied the whole trip, except of course when she was sleeping!  Do you put a fun bag together for your children before you head to Walt Disney World?  I would love to hear what you include in the comment section!
