2011 Epcot International Food and Wine Festival Details

2011 Epcot International Food & Wine Festival

Details will continue to unfold between now and the start of the Epcot International Food & Wine Festival, themed “Passport to a World of Flavors,” but here are the early highlights for the 16th annual Epcot International Food & Wine Festival.

From Sept. 30-Nov. 13, Epcot World Showcase Promenade features a panoply of delicious tastes, wine and cocktail pairings and other drinks, live entertainment and special culinary fun. More than 25 international marketplaces feature tapas-sized portions ($3 to $8) paired with beer, wine and cocktails.

What’s hot this year? Here are the headlines:

  • Hawaii, the Caribbean islands and Portugal all debut Marketplaces – look for Kailua pork sliders in Hawaii, ropa vieja in the Caribbean and calamari salad in Portugal.
  • The new Odyssey Lounge opens, where guests can check in with friends and family back home, play games and surf the web while enjoying a specialty cocktail or a glass of wine or beer. There’s even a charging station for mobile phones and other electronic devices.
  • Celeb chefs are back – top culinarians like Jeff Henderson, Cat Cora, Alan Wong, Gale Gand, Suvir Saran, Jamie Deen, Rock Harper, Celina Tio and more. All told, more than 270 chefs participate.
  • There’s always fun stuff at the Festival Welcome Center, from a wine bar to tasting seminars and free sessions with cookbook authors.
  • Eat to the Beat! Concert Series is back at America Gardens Theatre with first timers the Pointer Sisters, The Orchestra starring former members of ELO and Gin Blossoms. Taylor Dayne kicks it off opening weekend.
  • Also back are First Bites Opening Reception on Sept. 29 (one time only); Kitchen Memories (formerly Celebrating Family and Friends in the Kitchen); Mixology Seminar, and “3D” Disney Dessert Discovery. And of course the grand Party for the Senses!
  • A new Cranberry Bog display by Craisons tells the story behind the cranberry’s rich agricultural heritage.

The Party for the Senses grand tasting events and other special wine and culinary programs require reservations and separate event admission. Guests can call 407/WDW-FEST (939-3378) for information and to make reservations for special events and programs (Aug. 16 is the date you can start booking).

Walt Disney Animation Studios Introduces New CG Comedy Adventure “Wreck-It Ralph”

Walt Disney Animation Studios Introduces New CG Comedy Adventure “Wreck-It Ralph”

Directed by Emmy® Winner Rich Moore, Hilarious and Wildly Imaginative Animated Movie to Feature the Voices of John C. Reilly, Sarah Silverman, Jack McBrayer and Jane Lynch

Some of us are born to be bad, but that doesn’t mean we have to like it. Walt Disney Animation Studios and Emmy®-winning director Rich Moore (TV’s “The Simpsons,” “Futurama”) take moviegoers on a hilarious, video-game-hopping journey in “Wreck-It Ralph,” the story of an arcade game Bad Guy determined to prove he can be a Good Guy. Produced by Clark Spencer (“Lilo & Stitch,” “Bolt”) and featuring the voices of John C. Reilly, Sarah Silverman, Jack McBrayer and Jane Lynch, the CG comedy adventure will hit theaters on Nov. 2, 2012, and will be presented in Disney Digital 3D™ in select theaters.

Says Moore, “I love the idea of a very simple 8-bit video game character struggling with the complex question: ‘isn’t there more to life than the role I’ve been assigned?’ In his quest for the answer, we journey with our hero through three visually distinct video game worlds. It’s unlike anything anyone’s seen before, and I’m thrilled to be to creating it here at Walt Disney Animation Studios.”

Wreck-It Ralph (voice of Reilly) longs to be as beloved as his game’s perfect Good Guy, Fix-It Felix (voice of McBrayer). Problem is, nobody loves a Bad Guy. But they do love heroes… so when a modern, first-person shooter game arrives featuring tough-as-nails Sergeant Calhoun (voice of Lynch), Ralph sees it as his ticket to heroism and happiness. He sneaks into the game with a simple plan—win a medal—but soon wrecks everything, and accidently unleashes a deadly enemy that threatens every game in the arcade. Ralph’s only hope? Vanellope von Schweetz (voice of Silverman), a young troublemaking “glitch” from a candy-coated cart racing game who might just be the one to teach Ralph what it means to be a Good Guy. But will he realize he is good enough to become a hero before it’s “Game Over” for the entire arcade?

Worldwide Celebration to Honor Rapunzel

Princess Rapunzel and Her Prince Flynn Rider

Great news about a new addition to the Disney Princess Court from Disney Parks Blog.

That’s right, we’ll soon have a new official member of our Disney Princess court and that calls for a royal celebration. We’re thrilled to announce this morning that we’ll be welcoming Rapunzel as our tenth Disney Princess with a star-studded ceremony at Kensington Palace in London, UK.

And what better place than Kensington Palace, right? It’s been the home of many real-life princesses over the centuries and on October 2, 2011, it’ll be the place for a world-first ceremony honoring Rapunzel. All ten Disney Princess characters will be there, joined by VIPs, celebrities and little princesses from around the globe. The festivities will include a procession through Hyde Park, party activities and an amazing welcoming ceremony.

As most Disney Parks Blog readers know, each of our princesses has a unique story and Rapunzel is no exception. She’s an inquisitive princess who fills her days with art, books and imagination and can’t help but feel her true destiny lies outside of those lonely tower walls.

We’ll have more details on Rapunzel’s royal celebration in upcoming months but for now, mark October 2, 2011, on your calendar as the day Ariel, Aurora, Belle, Cinderella, Jasmine, Mulan, Pocahontas, Snow White, Tiana and the world gathers to officially welcome Disney’s newest princess to the family.

Book Art of Animation Suites and Princess-Themed Rooms at Port Orleans.

Book Art of Animation Suites and Princess-Themed Rooms at Port Orleans.

Part of the big news to come out of yesterday, including the announcement of new ticket prices and packages for 2012, was the news that you can now book the Art of Animation Suites located at the Pop Century Resort and princess-themed rooms at Port Orleans.

You can book the suites for arrivals starting on May 31, 2012.  Not all the rooms at Art of Animation are available yet for booking; as of yesterday, you could only book the suites.  We’d love to hear from those of you who’ve booked them:  Did you think the prices were reasonable?  We found a room on a Friday night in June topping out at a steep $444. That same suite goes for $314 on a Friday night in September.

The new princess-themed rooms at Port Orleans-Riverside can be booked for stays beginning April 4, 2012.  A quick glance at the “royal guest rooms” show they’re running a more reasonable $235 – $265 a night during the summer. Not bad, considering the theming.

No news yet on the Contemporary’s new “wellness” suites. I can’t wait to get a look at those!

Ultra Sabers! – $50 (each) and up!
I must confess – I love Lightsabers. Ever since I was a kid I was fascinated by this fictional weapon of the Jedi Knights. Growing up we had these cheesy plastic wiffle-bat looking things that were destroyed after seconds of play. Now there are plenty of replica Lightsabers for purchase. Some are durable enough to withstand nearly any impact. Take for example, my favorite sabersmith Ultra Sabers. These sabers are built to last and come in a wide variety of colors and designs. Unlike other replica sabers you can choose to equip them with or without sound PLUS you have the ability to take the blade off using a set-screw. That way you can display your saber hilt or wear it on your Jedi belt. There are even options in blade length so that you have a saber big enough for a child or little green Jedi Master! I especially like the RGB option where you can change the color of your saber on-the-fly. The products come well recommended by many Lightsaber aficionados and have an amazing staff who are customer oriented. If you’re father’s into props, collecting, cosplay or just likes to have something cool and unique to have in his office check out Ultra Sabers and tell them Aljon at Jedi Mouseketeer/Sorcerer Radio sent you!

Chip & Company Week in Review, June 13, 2011

Chip & Company Week in Review, June 13, 2011

Welcome back to another edition of the Chip & Company Week in Review!  I hope you have had a great week, but if you have missed some of your Disney news stories, feel free to take a look at these!

  • For you ElecTRONica fans out there, great news!  The grid will remain open at Disney’s California Adventure until Spring, 2012!  So go test your skills!
  • Did you see the premier of ‘My Yard Goes Disney!’?  If not, here is a sneak peak into what you’ll see in episode two, so check it out and tune in tonight at 8PM ET/7PM CT for the complete episode!
  • Did you see the review of the iPad game “THE INCREDIBLE MACHINE”?  This game is a problem solver game, and for the iPad it is only $2.99, so check it out and see if it is something you should add to your collection!
  • Are you a Beauty and the Beast fan?  If so, you will love that the Classic Disney Movie will be released on Blu-Ray on October 4th!
  • Can you believe that the Rocketeer is approaching 20 years old?!  Check out our post about the celebration that D23 is planning for it!
  • Did you hear about Victoria & Alberts being awarded the AAA Five Diamond Award?  Congratulations!
  • Disney’s Primeval Whirl ride over at Animal Kingdom is still closed, and last week, we learned that it will remain closed until at least September 14th.  That’s a shame, but the important thing is that the accident investigation can continue, and that the ride is safe for all.
  • Disney does such a great job in raising funds for worthy causes, and the Florida United Way was the benefactor of more than $185,000 from the Disney chefs (and other Florida chefs)!
  • My daughter loved Mo Willems books when she was younger, so when I heard that Disney was going to publish “The Duckling Gets a Cookie!?”, I immediately lit up in anticipation!
  • Finally, in a sad note, Disney is preparing for a layoff.  I hope that the employees are able to find other jobs soon.

Of course, not all of our writing is news information.  We have a ton of great Disney views to share with you, so here are three of them to whet your whistle!

  • First up, Jessica writes to us about Don Hahn’s book, “Brain Storm: Unleashing Your Creative Self”.  Jessica is a Communications major, so this book sounds right up her alley!  Check it out.
  • One of our new writers, Kelly, brings to us her thoughts on the “Walt Disney World Dining Bests”.  If you missed it, check it out, because there are some good tips and great shots to look at!
  • Chip is always approaching us with questions that we have received on the website.  Melissa wrote her answer for “Late Summer or early fall – which hotel is right for us?”  If you ever need a question answered, feel free to leave us your question, and we’ll get back to you with the answer!

As always, have a wonderful week, and remember – if you are not at the parks to get your Disney fix, fill that craving here at Chip & Company!
