Let’s Marvel at Some Super Gossip…

Let's Marvel at Some Super Gossip...
If Fantasyland isn’t your thing, you’re looking for the next big thing at Disney and the rumor mill is reporting about Marvel. Imagine Tomorrowland transforming into the Stark Expo! Tomorrowland was made to debut the most up and coming technology and Disney now owns Marvel…the possibilities seem endless, as do the rumors.

Of course nothing is as simple or seamless as it seems; particularly for Walt Disney World. With Universal Studios being so close and featuring the same characters…will the Mouse overpower the Globe and take over the Marvel characters?

Which brings us to these facts and questions:

1. There is a lot of money in Marvel, which Disney now owns; what are they going to do about it?

2. “The Avengers” is being released next summer…seems like a great time to coincide with a park transformation…but is it feasible?

3. Tomorrowland in Disneyland and Innoventions in Epcot could use an update…why not the Stark Expo?

4. Disney recently reclaimed Oswald the Lucky Rabbit (Walt’s original character who’s rights were stolen) so negotiations between the Mouse and the Globe are possible…but will they be willing to let something as big as Marvel go?

So here we are left with speculation and questions, and a lot of exciting possibilities. How do you feel about super heros in your Disney parks?

7 Reasons Why Cruising is the Perfect Vacation

7 Reasons Why Cruising is the Perfect Vacation

WDW natives know how much work a Walt Disney World vacation is, there’s the initial planning (where do we stay? Can we really afford a deluxe?) How much are we going to eat (ooooh that dining plan is SO yummy!) What is my ADR date (I MUST stay up till midnight to get my first choice restaurants!), when are the park hours going to be posted, I need to know my extra magical hours! These are just a few of the issues to consider when planning a WDW trip.

It’s easy to be in a frazzled frenzy before your trip even starts, and if you’re a “park commando” type, there’s no rest for the weary. Undoubtedly you become the keeper of the clock, and the responsibility for getting everyone up and to your destination on time is your job; which is a full time job in itself (talk about overworked and under-paid!) By the time you’re back you need a vacation from your vacation. This is why I’m obsessed with cruising and I think it’s the PERFECT vacation!

If you can’t imagine a vacation without the Disney magic (who could?! Say it ain’t so!) but want a break from the frenzy of the parks, a Disney Cruise Line vacation is the perfect solution. Let all your problems sail away as you board the Disney Magic, Disney Wonder or Disney Dream (the Disney Fantasy will be in rotation soon as well!)

Why get onboard with DCL?

1. The planning is minimal-Pick your sail date and destination and get onboard. There are very limited decisions, all you have to do is pick when you’d like to eat at Palo and if you’d like to do shore excursions…the rest is already set! DCL tells you where to eat and when, the show schedule is set and the rest you can decide on the fly with the help of your Personal Navigator.

2. All inclusive experience-Once you’re onboard everything is taken care of. There’s no touring plans to be done, no hours of operation to worry about, and never a shortage of things to do. You don’t have to pick a dining plan, it’s all included and there’s plenty to choose from.

3. Be as active, or inactive as you want-No park commando vacation style necessary, pick and choose what you’d like to do each day when your choices arrive via Personal Navigator. The pools are always open (kiddie pool and adults only pool-my personal favorite!), relax in the sun (grab a book to borrow from the Coffee shop) have a drink brought to you at your chair or relax in the hot tub. If you want to go and conquer the boat, it’s ready whenever you are. If the pool is calling your name; there’s always a chair ready.

4. Say Bon Voyage to the kids-If your children’s age ranges keep your touring plans in an uproar a DCL vacation is the perfect solution. The kids clubs are divided with age appropriate activities and peer groups, let the teens go do their thing in their own area (no adults allowed) and the littler one’s can find adventure in the Oceaneers Club, Oceaneers lab or even Flounder’s Reef nursery. If you’re horrified at the idea of sending your children out of your site on a family vacation, trust me…after one hour in the kids clubs you’ll change your mind. They will want nothing to do with you and don’t be surprised if you have a battle getting them to come to dinner with you. Parents are so boring compared to the kids clubs, they’ll never want to leave.

5. Be pampered-Mousekeeping is great at WDW, but DCL makes it look like child’s play. Every time you turn around your stateroom host (or hostess) is replenishing your toiletries, making towel animals, making your bed and leaving chocolates on your pillow. You never lack for anything and it’s a true feeling of royalty.

6. Be entertained-Instead of worrying about keeping everyone busy and being “fair” to everyone in your family, DCL has entertainment for everyone and it’s already planned, all you have to do is show up. The stage shows are Broadway caliber and fit for the whole family…don’t miss Disney Dreams…it’s my personal favorite! I love “Twice Charmed” as well! They are all great and you’ll leave breathless (and probably a little teary eyed to!)

7. Feast, Frolic and Flop-The food is endless, the activities are abundant and there’s plenty of relaxation…need I say more?

Tell us what your favorite part of cruising is!

Ask a Disney Question: Meal-Plan Help

Ask a Disney Question: Meal-Plan Help

Today’s Question comes from Sara who writes:
“If we choose a meal plan does that mean all our meals are already paid for? which meal plan is best for a family of 4 with a 4yrold and a 2yr old we will be at the Disney resort for about 5 days but only doing actual Disney parks for 2 or 3 days we want to do at least one character meal?”

Hi Sara! I’m so glad you asked about the Meal Plan. Its something that seems like it should be simple, but just ISN’T at all.

First question: If we choose a meal plan does that mean all our meals are already paid for?

YES – When you pay for your Magic Your way package and add a meal plan then the allotted number of meals on the plan + the number of nights you stay at the resort = how many meals you have available during your time in the parks. Example: Quick Service 2 meals & 2 snacks per person + 3 people in your party (over 3 years of age) + 5 nights at the resort = 30 meals and 30 snacks paid for in advance. All you will have to do is order, present your room key which they swipe, and it “debits” the meal from your “account”.

&

NO – It does not mean that you can walk into any restaurant at WDW (like you can at all-inclusive resorts) and have your meal paid for. You have to use the “style” of meal (Quick Service or Table Service) in the amount based on which plan you choose. You can read about the plans at http://disneyworld.disney.go.com/planning-guides/in-depth-advice/disney-dining-plan/ if you need details of what is included. You cannot “trade in” Quick Service or Snacks for Table Service Meals.

Second Question: Which meal is best for a family of 4 with a 4year old and a 2 year old?

This is really up to the individual family because I have no idea how much your 4 year old eats.  If he/she is anything like MY 4 year old then they rarely finish a plate. This may be perfect for you because your 2 year old can then share with sister/brother.

You will also have to determine how important it is for you to do a Character Meal. Make sure you’re getting the best deal and crunch some numbers. If you move up to the MYW plus dining plan then it includes character meals, but it includes FIVE of them! And if you’re not planning on being in park that much it might actually end up being more of a waste of money than if you just did the Quick Service Meal Plan and paid for one Character Meal. I personally am PRO Character meals, it saves you a lot of time because you’re not standing in line for autographs as much, but given your situation it is really a choice your individual family has to make.

Third Question: We will be at the Disney Resort for about 5 days, but only doing the actual Disney Parks for 2 or 3 days

Remember that it is the number of nights at a resort that determine how many meals you receive. In your situation, if you were to choose Quick Service you would have 30 meals and 3o snacks total.  What many people don’t know is that with a meal plan is that all of those meals are “bankable”. So in your situation, you have 5 days worth of 2 meals/2 snacks, which is 10 total meals and 10 total snacks PER PERSON.  You are only planning on being in the parks for three days. So in reality you can eat 4 quick services one day, and 3 quick services the other two days and 3+ snacks a day and still be fine.  You could eat at Starring Rolls for Breakfast (HWS), then have Casey’s Hotdogs (MK) for lunch, and Pecos Bill (MK) for Dinner and STILL have a meal to spare not to mention enjoying a Dole whip and a Mickey Ice Cream Bar. And that’s for every person over three in your party on the cheapest meal plan available. The down-side? You can’t trade in Quick Service meals for Character Meals. So a Character Meal comes out of pocket.

I hope that helps you a bit in your decision making process and provides a little more clarity on the often confusing meal plan!

Have a Magical Day!

Love, The Disney Diva

Review: Planet Explorers Walt Disney World 2011

Planet Explorers Walt Disney World 2011
Planet Explorers Walt Disney World 2011

Author Laura Shaefer has just released a brand new travel book called Planet Explorers Walt Disney World 2011, offering tween-agers “a little extra information about what’s where and why it’s so cool.” With this non-comprehensive guide, kids gain clout to “impress your parents and brothers or sisters and be their guide through all four Walt Disney World theme parks—and beyond.”

The book’s introduction contains a handy attraction evaluation key: (S) Scary, (A) Awesome, (D) Dark, (T) Thrilling, and (W) Wet. Brief descriptions of some key terms as well as a little history of Walt Disney’s life and legacy are also covered before diving into the various lands or areas within each Park. Each section highlights several popular attractions, noting height requirements where applicable, suggests where to grab some good grub, and includes interactive hyperlinks for further study of select subjects.

A few minor layout issues exist but do not detract from the reading. Also, because Walt Disney World is a place that is ever-evolving and continuously being plussed—or improved—and expanding, I found a few inaccuracies. Planet Explorers Walt Disney World 2011 is not entirely up-to-date on the Magic Kingdom Fantasyland construction and expansion, such as venue closures and relocations like those of Belle’s Fairytale Garden and Ariel’s Grotto. However, Guests are advised to pick up a current Park schedule when they arrive onsite to get the latest information.

Bits of trivia and some nice photos are interspersed throughout the book, and there’s a fun quiz at the end of the book. Overall, I think tweens will enjoy this planner.

Top 5 Disney Water Park Attractions

Top 5 Disney Water Park Attractions

If you have ever been to Blizzard Beach or Typhoon Lagoon, you know that Disney water parks are like no other! They are also a great way to get some relief from the intense, summertime heat. Just like Disney’s theme parks, there are a lot of things to do and see so check out my Top 5 Disney Water Park Attractions!

1. Surf Pool-Typhoon Lagoon’s wave pool is probably the best in the world. For one, it’s massive with plenty of space to relax or splash with no waiting in line! Secondly, it generates 6 foot waves every 90 seconds! Typhoon Lagoon even hosts surfing lessons in the pool at times, if that gives you any indication at how awesome these waves are. If this sounds too intense, the waves are much gentler near the shore of the pool so there’s fun for the whole family.

2. Cross Country Creek-Blizzard Beach’s lazy river encircles the whole park and lets you float along a gentle stream past witty remnants of the ski resort and other witty sights, such as a snow blower spouting blasts of water at guests! Cross Country Creek even takes guests through Mount Gushmore via an icy cave!

3. Summit Plummet-This water slide is the tallest in the world dropping guests down what appears to be a ski jump at 50 to 60 mph! It’s also Blizzard Beach’s icon. Due to it’s extreme height and speed, this slide is a big draw for thrill junkies.

4. Teamboat Springs-This family raft ride at Blizzard Beach seats 4 to 6 guests and takes them on a winding ride down a huge, long slide! This particular slide is one of the longest family raft rides in the world and it really is a blast for the whole family. You’re sure to be laughing all the way to the bottom!

5. Crush n’ Gusher-Located at Typhoon Lagoon, this slide is an water coaster where water jets propel you up and down for a unique, water slide experience! Crush n’ Gusher is designed to look like an old fruit processing center and has three different slides offering different rides. Two of the three slides can even accomodate three guests!

New Refillable Mug Technology Being Tested at All Star Sports.

New Refillable Mug Technology Being Tested at All Star Sports.

If you’ve ever spent any time on a  Disney message board, you know that one of  the more contentious topics centers around the use of refillable soda mugs after your initial resort stay ends.  If you haven’t used one, here’s how they work:   Disney resort guests purchase  a refillable mug for use during their stay, either separately or through the dining plan.  The mugs are only good at your resort during that one stay–you can take the mug home as a souvenir but you can’t bring it back and re-use it on your next trip.  And that, of course, is the problem. We’ve all heard about people re-using mugs over and over again, and while the environmentalist in you might like the idea, it breaks the rules and costs Disney money.

In an attempt to solve this program, Disney has implemented a test program at the All Star Sports’ End Zone food court to track and limit mug use.  Mugs will have an RFID code that the soda dispenser will read before dispensing soda.  Your mug will be good for unlimited sodas from the time of check-in until midnight on the day of check-out; after that, your mug won’t work.  The only catch is that you’ll have to wait five minutes between refills.

We’ve known this has been coming for a while, but there’s no word yet on whether or not the technology will be put into place at other resorts. I’m betting if it’s successful it will be implemented across the boards, as it seems to be a fairly low-tech solution to the refillable mug problem.

What are your thoughts on this?  Do you buy a mug when you visit?

Disney World Quick Tips – Animal Kingdom

Disney World Quick Tips - Animal Kingdom

Animal Kingdom has the wrap that it is a half-day park. In order to get the full value of the park many seasoned Walt Disney World travelers will tell you that you MUST experience Animal Kingdom at various times of the day. There is a ton of sight, sounds, eats and attractions that can keep you and your family occupied for a full day.

Enjoy these Animal Kingdom Quick Tips!!

• Arrive early at park opening or stay until closing in order to get the best view of the animals around the park. Just remember the park closes most days at 5pm.

• Are you thinking character meals? Make and advanced dining reservation for breakfast at Donald’s Safari Breakfast at Tusker House. This is a rather popular dining location at Animal Kingdom.

• Another popular dining location at Animal Kingdom Is Yak & Yeti the park’s newest full-serviced dining location. Again, advanced dining reservations are recommended for this location.

Kilimanjaro Safari is by far the most popular attraction at Animal Kingdom. The ability to see a lot of animals in one sitting is what draws people to this attraction. Beware of the summer mid-day heat. Animal usually find somewhere cool to hide during the mid-day hours. Visit Kilimanjaro Safari during early morning or evening hours.

• There are two fantastic shows that are offered at Animal Kingdom both Finding Nemo The Musical and Festival of the Lion King are must do’s while at Animal Kingdom. Be sure to grab a list of show times at the entrance of the park.

• Are you a thrill-seeker? Take a jaunt over to Expedition Everest for the highest elevation ride on Disney property. I recommend showing up early to ride or grabbing a FASTPASS in order to avoid extremely long lines.

Those are just some of my Quick Tips for visiting Animal Kingdom what are some of your? Let me know in the comment box below.

Disney: Get it For Less

Disney: Get it For Less
Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique at Downtown Disney.

The new Duke and Duchess of Cambridge (aka Prince William and Kate) recently wrapped up their tour of Canada and the United States. As an ordinary commoner, it was a lot of fun to drool over admire the extraordinary designer outfits Kate wore. Sadly, I do not have the royal coffers at my disposal and must live on a more modest commoner’s budget. Fortunately for me, most style shows, websites, and magazines usually find an affordable “get it for less” option in short order.

The wheels started to turn. Could the same idea apply to Walt Disney World? Were there more affordable alternatives for magical experiences? There are.

Wishes Dessert Party. You could shell out $27 per adult and $14 per child for an uninterrupted view of the Wishes Nighttime Spectacular from the Tomorrowland Terrace Restaurant while noshing on a buffet of delectable desserts.

Enjoy It For Less. For my money, I’ll take a quiet, relaxed, unobstructed view of Wishes from the beach of the Polynesian Resort. Stop by Captain Cook’s for a Dole Whip for less than $3 or take a detour to the Tambu Lounge for one of its specialty cocktails and an appetizer.

AMC Dine-In Theater. The AMC movie theater in Downtown Disney recently added an exciting new “Fork and Screen” option. Guests can order and enjoy casual dining (something more than than popcorn and candy) during movie showings. Tickets alone will cost you $13 per person and entree prices are similar to those at your local casual chain restaurant like Applebee’s or TGIFridays (in the $10 range). Although convenient, this makes for an expensive night out with the family.

Enjoy It For Less. Outdoor movies (may be seasonal) by the pool or on the beach are cropping up at more Disney resorts. And, they are free! Stop by the food court or the nearby pool bar to purchase your food for alfresco dining. Whereas the AMC Dine-In Theater doesn’t accept the Disney dining plan, the food courts do.

Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique. Starting at $50 (hairstyling and makeup), your little girl can be transformed into an enchanted princess by a Godmother-in-Training at the Cinderella Castle location in Magic Kingdom or World of Disney in Downtown Disney.

Enjoy It For Less. The Harmony Barber Shop (near the Car Barn and Emporium) in the Magic Kingdom is a working barber shop and a favorite for baby’s first haircut. A little known secret is that they’ll also style your child’s hair with colored gel and pixie dust for only $7.50 – a fraction of the cost of Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique. Reservations can be made by calling 407-WDW-PLAY.

Cirque du Soleil. Cirque du Soleil at Downtown Disney is magnificent; the talent and artistry of the performers is breathtaking. I remember being captivated when I saw my first Cirque du Soleil show in New York. Tickets for Cirque du Soleil’s La Nouba start at $75 for adults and can run as high as $132 – a definite budget-buster for many families.

Get It For Less. Epcot’s World Showcase Performers are extremely talented. These free “street shows” are a lovely way to spend an afternoon or evening at Walt Disney World. From the Ziti Sisters in Italy to the candy artist in Japan to the Voices of Liberty in America, the variety of shows will entertain guests of all ages.

Bass Fishing. A two-hour catch-and-release bass fishing excursion for up to five people will run you about $270. These excursions include the boat rental, tackle, guide, and beverages.

Get It For Less. Escape to the dock at Fort Wilderness or Port Orleans Riverside to relax and unwind with some catch-and-release dockside fishing. For under $5 per 30 min, you’ll receive a pole and live bait. It’ll be up to you to create your own “I caught a fish this big” story.

Tokyo Disneyland Easter Wonderland 2011 Wrap-up

Tokyo Disneyland Easter Wonderland 2011 Wrap-up
Tokyo Disneyland Easter Wonderland 2011

While most people were preparing for 4th of July parties and vacations last week, Tokyo Disneyland wrapped up its Easter Wonderland celebration that ended on June 30th.   While it may seem a bit odd to celebrate a spring holiday into summer, the annual Easter Wonderland celebration is a popular event and traditionally attracts significant crowds right up until the final day.

Even though you’re preparing for another week of summer fun, let’s take a look back at some of the highlights from this year’s Easter Wonderland celebration.

Easter Egg Hunt

Fun for both adults and kids alike, Tokyo Disneyland offered an Easter egg scavenger hunt.  As you wandered around the park, Disney character themed Easter Eggs were strategically placed near various attractions.  The object was to find the exact eggs listed on the course in order to collect your prize.  For 2011, guests could purchase the standard hunt map or go for the expert version.  Let me tell you — that expert course ended up being a lot more difficult than I initially imagined!  It included smaller, non-Disney themed eggs that were much less visible from a distance.  After three hours of seemingly wandering in circles, we found the last egg and I got the special edition Easter Wonderland pin.

Park Decorations

One of the reasons I enjoy visiting Tokyo Disneyland so often is the seasonal decorations.  Each event really is magical and after seeing the same decorations in the US Parks year after year, it is refreshing to visit Tokyo and see something new each and every time.  For this year’s celebration, Tokyo even had live “performers” — three statuesque women stood essentially motionless, changing poses every few minutes, surprising many guests.

Special Easter Menus and Treats

Without a doubt, Tokyo Disney has the market corned on seasonal goodies and themed menus.  Both the resort hotels and parks always feature special menus and seasonal treats.  This year was no exception with Tokyo Disneyland offering several special desserts, including a custard mousse with souvenir cup and a marshmallow Easter chick with a souvenir plate.

The Disneyland Hotel featured a fancy Easter set menu and a little known highlight there — you could purchase an engraved Champagne bottle!  The Tokyo Disney Ambassador Hotel also featured their seasonal dessert set in the Hyperion Lounge, which is a must on any of my trips now.  This year’s theme included a bit more obscure character — Oswald the Lucky Rabbit.  The design was taken from the Easter Wonderland Parade Float.

Easter Parade

The Easter Wonderland Parade is always a fun time and is filled with lots of live performers and several floats.  This parade is more like a street party as the floats primarily stop in one spot and the dancing performance takes place all around them.  As with other parades, the costumes are top-notch, the performers are engaging with the public, and the music is awesome. And if you really like the parade music, you can always buy it — most stores in the Disney Resort sell the seasonal event music CDs — a very worthwhile purchase!

The Tokyo Disney Resort has some smaller summer stuff currently underway but the next big events to mark on your calendar are Tokyo DisneySEA’s 10th Anniversary “Be Magical” celebration (starting September 4th) and Tokyo Disneyland’s Halloween Event (starting September 9th).

If you are interested in seeing more detailed information and loads of pictures from the various aspects of the 2011 Easter Wonderland celebration, be sure to stop by my blog, Pooh’s Travels.

Five Rides To Avoid If You Are Prone To Motion Sickness

Five Rides To Avoid If You Are Prone To Motion Sickness

Motion sickness is something that can really mess up your day. Some folks, like me, are extremely susceptible and they either have to skip some of Walt Disney World’s best attractions or find a treatment that helps keep you from getting that horrible queasy feeling (or worse). There are as many ways to calm motion sickness as there are people with that issue. I can’t recommend any but I have found one that works for me so before you go experimenting you might want to check with your Doctor to see what she/he recommends. If you don’t want to go that route, here are five rides I would caution you to avoid.

  1. Mission Space (Orange) – This one did me in on my first try in 2003 and even with my personal motion sickness cure I’ve been hesitant to try it again. The ride is very intense and the fact that there is spinning (can’t see it but boy can you feel it) involved can stir up all but the strongest stomachs. If you are plagued with motion sickness and still want to try this one try the “green” version. It’s still intense but there is no spinning. Take it from someone with severe motion sickness the “green” version works great for me so I get to experience a terrific attraction without having to take a 2 hour “calm down the tummy” break.
  2. Mad Tea Party This one is a bit deceiving. It looks pretty harmless but if you happen to get on the ride with one of those kids, or even adults, that get that crazed look in their eyes just before the ride starts you are in trouble. The platform that the tea cups sit on spins and your crazed fellow riders will likely want to spin the cup as fast as they can, not a pretty situation for those of us with motion problems. Unless you have complete trust in your fellow riders stay away from this one.
  3. Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith – This is a truly fun ride and is almost worth that queasy feeling. The take off is thrilling but right away you get in to the inversions and corkscrews. One saving grace on this ride is the smoothness of the whole thing. If you put your head back on the head rest and keep it there the motion issues are minimized. One caution, don’t close your eyes. The entire ride after the launch is dark with lots of neon representations of the city of Los Angeles so sit back and enjoy the ride but like I said you may have motion sickness issues.
  4. Expedition Everest – This ride is peculiar in it’s effect on those with motion issues. It had very minimal effect on me but made my wife, who has NO motion sickness issues, feel pretty bad. I think it was the backwards portion of the ride that did her in and she refuses to ride it again. I’ve heard of several other folks who had the same problems with this attraction as my wife so if going backwards makes you uncomfortable (remember there are lots of people who won’t ride backwards on a train) you might want to pass this one up.
  5. Astro Orbiter – Sitting in the heart of Tomorrowland this cute little rocket ride looks harmless enough. This is another one where you have to trust your fellow rider. Pulling on the stick causes you to go up quite high and this is where the dizzying effects can really grab you. Round and round and up and down at a significant altitude does not make for a calm stomach. Like I mentioned, it looks harmless but if you are riding with one of those “crazed” friends or children it could get ugly.

Some of these rides may or may not affect you but these are the ones that are likely to cause you discomfort depending on your personal motion issues. I know that these are the ones that tear me up. Have fun and ride every ride that you are comfortable trying but avoid putting yourself in a situation where you feel horrible for a couple of hours after the ride – it’s not worth it. As always, enjoy your visit to Walt Disney World!!
