Tips for Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party

Tips for Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween PartyI am often asked if Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party is worth the extra money and I always say “YOU BETCHA!” The Diva family has been to Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party (aka MNSSHP) multiple times and really loved it!

If you’re planning a trip to WDW in 2011 from September 13th to October 31st I have a few tips that will help you make your PARTY even more fun!

1) Bring Costumes with you

A big part of what makes the party so much fun are the amazing costumes tourists wear on MSSHP nights. Some will be so amazing you’ll be just as excited to take photos with them as you are to take pictures with the characters. However costumes are insanely expensive at WDW. You can save a lot of money by purchasing costumes ahead of time. We buy ours off of ebay and bring them with us.

Remember a few things when you choose the costume:  (A) Many years it is still extremely HOT and HUMID in the evening during the months the MNSSHP happens. The more layers your costume has the more miserable you will become. (B) Its STILL Disney World which means you will still be doing a lot of walking. So high heels, heavy boots, or just really uncomfortable shoes is a terrible idea. Make sure you pack a pair of tennis shoes for your children if they initially opt for plastic princess heels. (C) Its also a good idea to bring a change of clothes just in case you get tired of wearing your costume.

2) Book your Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique or Pirates League early on the day of the party

With the airline baggage costs completely out of hand it might not be possible to pack costumes for everybody. Never Fear! Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique and Pirates League can deck you and yours out for the party! Make sure you don’t waste valuable party time getting “done up”. See if you can schedule the appointment earlier in the day, but not so early that your make-up all melts off of your face. My 8 year old LOVED his trip to Pirate League and many people stopped him to tell him how great she looked.

3) Look for the rare characters. One of the reason I love MNSSHP is many of the  hard to find characters are there. We have had pictures made with Tarzan, Jane and Terk from the movie Tarzan, Baloo and King Louie from Jungle Book, the Mad Hatter and the Queen of Hearts, Snow White with ALL 7 of the Dwarves, and MANY villians. Also you can catch the Princes WITH their Princesses which is very rare! We’ve also been able to take our pictures in front of the Cinderellas carousel.

This party is GREAT and you will have an AMAZING time if you plan it. We always hop our kids up on caffeine so that we can stay out even later. I hope you’ll chose to go!

Disney’s Newest Vaction Club Property Causes Some Woes for Brides.

Disney's Newest Vaction Club Property Causes Some Woes for Brides.

Don’t expect an announcement from Disney anytime soon, but the newest DVC property will be at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort, right next to the Wedding Pavilion.  A few weeks ago Disney submitted changes to the original plan, making the building a bit larger and moving it farther out into the Seven Seas Lagoon. And we know that there’s been a lot of activity in the parking lot adjacent to the Spa and Health Club.  But what’s really confirming that this property has the go-ahead is what brides are being told to expect in the near future.

I think a little sympathy is called for here, as this has to be awkward for Disney wedding planners.  If you recall when Bay Lake Tower was being built, Disney refused to comment on what the new structure would be even as the building grew several stories, so wedding planners have to calm fears and speak of “that which shall not be named” as it goes up right next to the Wedding Pavilion!   We’re hearing that construction of this mystery site will halt during weddings and that shrubs and other landscaping will go up around it to ensure that the view will remain as pretty as ever.  The route that Cinderella’s glass carriage will take between the WP to the Grand Floridian will change as well to provide a more attractive view.    As for pictures, brides and grooms can still take advantage of the sandy beach setting and gorgeous views of the lake, but they’ll have to do so on the Polynesian side of the Wedding Pavilion, not on the Grand Floridian side:  That’s where the construction will take place.

The news that’s causing the most concern, however, seems to be the change from clear to stained glass windows in the Wedding Pavilion itself. New windows will replace the clear glass in the side windows on July 17 and 18.   This will block the view of the construction. If you’ve seen the stained glass window in Franck’s Studio, where brides go to plan their wedding, it will be similar to this.  Some brides have expressed concern that it will make it too dark inside, but the room has a lot of skylights and natural lighting coming from the front.  The front window with the view of Cinderella Castle will remain the same.

We’ll keep you posted on the details of this new DVC as news comes out.

Top 5 Must-Buys at Disney World

Top 5 Must-Buys at Disney World

We all plan our Disney trips down to last detail. Our travel itinerary is in place, our accommodations are booked and paid for, and our Theme Park tickets are in the luggage bag, and we may even have our dining options all picked out.

Yes, we are all set for another magical visit to The Happiest Place on Earth.

But wait! I think we’ve forgotten something: Our merchandise budget!

Just how much can we afford to spend? And how can we save ourselves from the dreaded impulse buy? Don’t be naive; the Mouse knows how to work the shoppers! Before you can say ‘Jiminy Cricket’ he will have your extra cash and all you may have in return are a few trinkets that you don’t really want.

Well, I’m here to save you and your hard-earned dollars by giving you the top five Must-buys when visiting The Magic Merchandiser, er… Kingdom:

Number Five

Any Exclusive Theme Park Item. The merchandising world has produced millions of pieces of Disney memorabilia. You can pick up just about anything at your local toy store or Wal-Mart. But it just isn’t the same as an exclusive piece of Theme Park product only available at WDW (or Disneyland).

Usually Downtown Disney will have the highest concentration of such merchandise, especially at The World of Disney superstore.  But keep your eyes open for those special items. They’re usually linked to a unique ride or attraction that might not be as mainstream as the likeness of Mickey or Jack Sparrow.

Top 5 Must-Buys at Disney World

Buying Limited Edition items at artist signings are always a good bet for exclusivity.

Number Four

Souvenir Book. Believe it or not, some of your magical memories will fade after awhile. But if you purchase one of these beautifully
photographed keepsakes, you’ll be able to look back and relive almost every moment again and again. Well, at least the biggest moments!

Top 5 Must-Buys at Disney World

Number Three

Trading Pins. My wife and I always enjoy firsts at WDW. So when we ride or visit an attraction for the first time, we always buy a Trading Pin to commemorate the occasion. These are relatively inexpensive, and if each member of the family chooses a ‘Memory Pin’ for a different occasion, you’ll have a nice collection in no time!

Top 5 Must-Buys at Disney World

Number Two

T-shirt. The absolute best ‘been-there-got-the-T-shirt’ classic keepsake! You can buy Disney-themed T’s aftermarket, but they don’t
always compare to the styles and selection on WDW property. Be prepared to pay a premium! But when your wearing a T that no one else at home has ever seen, it’ll be worth it!

Top 5 Must-Buys at Disney World

Number One

Mickey Ears. If you’ve been to WDW, or any Disney Park worldwide, and still haven’t bought your own pair of themed Mickey Ears: Shame on you! Nothing says, “I’m a Disney fan!” like wearing a pair of Mickey Ears. Of course you won’t be able to wear them around your neighborhood at home, but seeing pictures of yourself sporting mouse ears at the Parks is a memory trigger no true Disney fan should miss!

Top 5 Must-Buys at Disney World

So there you have it. My Top Five Must-buys for Theme Park merchandise. But maybe you prefer something different, and if so, leave your must-buy in the comments section below! But be careful, if I like it better than my own ones, I may just beat you back to the Parks and buy it first!

Special Needs at WDW: Tips for the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing

Special Needs at WDW: Tips for the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing

Oscar winning Deaf actress Marlee Matlin has often said, “the only thing Deaf people can’t do is hear” and she proves it everyday. The sights and sounds of Walt Disney World aren’t only for hearing people, the Deaf and hard of hearing can experience all that Walt Disney World has to offer through a variety of communication devices.

If you have a family member who is Deaf or hard of hearing and haven’t experienced Disney destinations because of it, this should help you understand what Disney has to offer so you and your family can make the most of your magical vacation.

There are many mis-conceptions about what Deaf and hard of hearing people can do and not do, and what they can enjoy, and i’m sure there’s plenty of debate about whether a Walt Disney World vacation is “worth it” if someone in your travel party has hearing issues. As a student of American Sign Language and a person with Deaf friends, I won’t attempt to answer all the questions that us ignorant hearing people have; but I will tell you that Walt Disney World is a place that makes sure EVERYONE’s experience is as magical as it can be, whether you can hear or not.

Major experiences in Walt Disney World include the attractions and the stage shows. They are often everyone’s favorite parts of the trip and there’s no reason everyone can’t enjoy them. The first stop you should make at the parks is Guest Relations, this is where you can get information and pick up most of your hearing assistive devices. Some require a refundable deposit and for the device to be returned same day. You can also receive schedules of Sign Language interpreted performances in the parks that week.

At the entrance of attractions and shows ask a cast member for a guest assistance packet. This includes things like a flashlight, pen and paper, and dialogue and narrations for the attractions within the park. Have patience, it may take a minute for the cast member to locate what you need but at least you will have those resources as a back up if all other communication fails.

Basic communication needs are met with amplified headsets on pay phones, assistive listening devices (which require a $25 refundable deposit if returned same day) and TTY locations for information and to book your vacation (407-827-5141) or to request an interpreter.

Most theatre shows offer reflective captioning, ask a cast member for the device and for early entrance into the show to set up your captioning device properly. Reflective captioning allows you to attach a plexiglass sort of device to a chair in front of you that will reflect the captions from the back wall. It must be situated so that you can view the stage and see the words at the base of the stage. Shows with 3-D glasses may make the captions difficult to read.

Handheld Captioning Units-These are wireless devices that give you a written version of scripts for certain attractions. These devices require a $100 refundable deposit, but have no other charge. Pick up your unit at Guest Services in your park; but if you are park hopping, your HCU can’t. You’ll have to turn it in and pick up another one at your next park. These units also serve as closed captioning activators for some attractions, if you are within 20 feet of the screen this function will work.

Video Captioning and Closed Captioning-This remote requires a $25 refundable deposit and will activate closed captioning on tv monitors for attractions (like the pre-shows in the queue).

ASL Interpreters are available for live shows on a rotating basis. Schedules for interpreters vary from week to week to ask Guest Relations in the park (or your lobby concierge) for an up-to-date schedule. If you would like to request free sign language interpretation for other live entertainment (such as Candlelight Processional) call 407-824-4321 or TTY 407-827-5141 at least two weeks in advance.

Look for cast members with the “ASL” symbol on their name tag, these cast members are trained in sign language.

When you’re ready to end your time in the parks, your Disney resort also offers “Room Communication Kits” that include:

  • Door knock and phone alerts
  • Bed shaker alarm
  • TTY (text typewriter)
  • Strobe light fire alarm
  • Phone amplifier

If you’re making your reservation online, there is a box to check if you need a room communication kit, if you are using a travel agent, let them know and they can note it on the reservation for you. While most travel arrangements can be made online and much agent-client communication is done via e-mail having someone who understands YOUR first language is a huge asset. American Sign Language and verbal speech don’t have the same subject/verb sentence structure and can be confusing for someone who isn’t trained in ASL and frustrating for you, the Deaf client. If you have questions about Disney travel, need more information about the services available for Deaf and Hard of Hearing people in the parks or would like a free quote, feel free to contact me.

There’s plenty of magic in Disney parks for everyone, including the Deaf and hard of hearing, remember…the only thing a Deaf person can’t do is hear.

Disney Confidential – Test Track Closing

Disney Confidential - Test Track Closing

Hey there guys and gals. Anonymouse here!

I have some juicy gossip today. I really love Disney World gossip, don’t ask me why. Maybe it is because I love stirring the pot, or I like ticking off Chip. Whatever the reason the word on the street is that they are going to be closing Epcot’s Test Track.

Test Track is scheduled to close for refurbishment starting in January 2012!!!

The new attraction will have a different name, still be sponsored by The US Government General Motors , and be focused on the creation of new cars rather than testing. The ride will include a new fleet of vehicles similar to the ones used in Richard Petty Driving Experience Radiator Springs Racers (Disneyland) and some additional track modifications. The ride system and most of the track will remain as is, so that is why it will only take around 6 months to complete and not 2 years.

I for one am not really a big fan of test track. I drive a car everyday so going to Disney World to get in a car that goes 0-60 doesn’t really do it for me. Maybe if the car went 0-100 in a reverse while doing a wheelie it might be more fun exciting. I want to hear what you think. Are you a fan of Test Track or not? Let me know in the comment box below.

Anywho that is all the Disney Gossip I have right now.

Watch Out for Pin Codes That Don’t Save You Money.

Watch Out for Pin Codes That Don't Save You Money.

Disney’s newest marketing tool is sending out more pin codes. That’s great, right?  Well, just be careful. Some of the newest pin codes don’t actually save you any money. Briefly, a pin code is a discount that’s unique to you. When you sign up at the Disney website to get emails from Disney, some of the emails “might” contain a discount code. I say “might” because there doesn’t seem to be any way to ensure you’ll actually get a code.

In our household, Disney loves sending codes to my husband. My husband has never booked a Disney trip or played with the website to get vacation ideas.  I haven’t had a pin code in months and I’m on there all the time.  Pin codes are generally a better deal than what’s being offered to the general public. This is particularly true with room discounts, which tend to be better.

The latest round of pin codes is called “game on.”  It’s essentially like booking at some of the online booking engines where you gamble on the room and it’s non-refundable. Personally, I’m not crazy about that part, but some people love this pin. I’ve heard of people getting one-bedroom villas at Saratoga Springs for $199 a night. That’s a huge savings.  The complaints I’ve heard are that some of the pins aren’t actually pins at all.  The intent is simply to get you to call Disney and pay rack rate. So just be aware that a pin code that looks like a pin code might not actually save you any money.

How to protect yourself? Well, if you have a travel agent, have him or her take care of it.  They should be able to tell right away that it’s not a real pin code.  If  you’re booking on your own, make sure you run the numbers on the Disney website first to get full rack rate (that is, the price without a discount) before you call. Some cast members won’t understand that this isn’t an actual code.

This isn’t anything new. I’ve had clients email me because they’ve gotten these codes in the past, but I’m hearing more about it lately.  Just be a smart consumer and know ahead of time what the full price is and you should be find.

Check out the article below from Chip talking about ways to get that Elusive Disney Pin Code.

Disney Confidential – Fantasmic Closing?

Disney Confidential - Fantasmic Closing?

Hey there guys and gals Anonymouse here!

I have some interesting Parks News again! In case you missed my article about Test Track Closing earlier this week its right here. On the heels of that gossip I bring wine gifts of new Disney Closure Gossip.

Writers for the website WDW Magic made an interesting discovery yesterday:   While schedules for  January have been over for two weeks, Fantasmic isn’t listed on the schedule at all.

Does this mean something as simple as routine maintenance or will the show be enhanced in some way?

While we like to dream about some variation of Disneyland’s World of Color coming to Hollywood Studios, we haven’t heard a whisper about it.  With revenue and resources being directed toward the Fantasyland expansion, Downtown Disney and the newest Disney Vacation Club property at the Grand Floridian, it’s more likely that it’s a temporary closure for maintenance.

Chip seems to think that Disney should bring in Marvel Studios to the late night attraction. Maybe a huge battle with the Avengers with lasers and all that jazz. Dumb Good idea Chip!

Will keep you posted if we hear anything.

Anywho that is all the Disney Gossip I have right now.

Got any good rumors?  Please email me at [email protected] or on my Facebook Page.

New Local Artists Featured at Downtown Disney

We’re in the middle of the Disney Soundsational Summer here at the Disneyland Resort – and speaking of sound, there are some new featured artists performing evenings this summer at the Downtown Disney District.

C.G. Ryche

C.G. Ryche is a rhythmic drummer with a multicultural approach that appeals to a very diverse audience – all ages and tastes find his show captivating. A unique addition to the Downtown Disney schedule of performers, C.G. has an energy and style that truly sets him apart.

Suburban Legends is a ska band that formed in nearby Huntington Beach in 1998. The band’s style of music has evolved over time, making it different from other ska bands. While their earlier material was heavily rooted in ska, their 2006 release, Dance Like Nobody’s Watching, brought a different sound that took ideas and influence from disco and funk.

Ed Gorski and Ken Oak

Ed Gorski and Ken Oak met in 2004 and played their first acoustic show together just two months later. With Ed on rhythm guitar, Ken began experimenting with his cello as a bass and lead instrument. The next fall, Oak & Gorski quit their “day” jobs, released an album and booked a national tour.

Rumble Kings is a five-piece rockabilly band featuring a powerful lead vocalist and explosive piano sounds. The group formed in late 1996 and has since captured a loyal entourage of fans from Hollywood to Miami. Rumble Kings have performed at various venues like Hard Rock Café, House Of Blues, BB King’s and the Coors Amphitheater. They have also become a staple act at various music festivals like the Viva Las Vegas Rockabilly Weekend and The Hootenanny.

Come out to Downtown Disney District and check out these artists and more this summer. Be sure to check the Entertainment Schedule for show times and locations.

Teens Take on visiting Walt Disney World

teen at Walt Disney World
Teens Take on the World

Is your teen ready to go it alone at Walt Disney World Resort? Small children see the Parks through pixie dusted lenses. Everything is magical and memorable and perfect. As they age, though, a little of that pixie dust wears off. A Disney trip may still be fun, but tagging along with Mom and Dad and little siblings can be a drag.

The teenagers I know keep their love of The Most Magical Place on Earth alive by stepping out on their own. They taste some independence, and they discover the World’s not so small after all when you’re free to fly solo.

I have a teenager, and yes, I have set him loose to take on the World sans Mom and Dad. He wasn’t completely alone; we were still on property. However, he was responsible for his own whereabouts and welfare. He had a handful of cash for snacks and souvenirs, plus his Key to the World, which was loaded with Disney Dining credits if he needed more substance, and he was ready to go. Not once did I worry, because we had established some boundaries beforehand.

The bare basic minimum our teen needed to know was

  1. Keep your cell phone handy, charged up, turned on and up loud (silenced during shows, of course).
  2. Check in at designated times throughout the day.
  3. Seek out a costumed Cast Member with a name badge if you need help.
  4. Know your Resort and room number.
  5. Stay with your group/friends.
  6. Unless a specific rendezvous is planned, know the time the last bus leaves, and DON’T MISS IT!
  7. Be respectful of other Guests and appreciative of Cast Members.

Those moments in the Parks with friends are now some of my son’s greatest Disney memories.

Teens Take on the World

Keep in mind that Walt Disney World is a big place! Make sure teens are familiar with maps and know which mode of transportation will get them back “home” at the end of the day. They may ignore this reminder, but comfort trumps fashion here, for girls especially. Heels and platforms, stylish as they are, will ruin the fun.

Alright, are you ready? Off they go! And don’t forget the PhotoPass!

Android App Review – Disney’s Winnie the Pooh Puzzle Book

Android App Review - Disney's Winnie the Pooh Puzzle Book

Disney Publishing Worldwide has recently released their first book app for the Android platform,  What’s a Bear To Do? is  inspired by the new Winnie the Pooh movie.   Full of wonderfully colorful and beautiful animated story pages, What’s a Bear To Do? offers young readers a chance to help Winnie the Pooh find his honey pots around the 100 Acre Wood.

I’ve been lucky enough to sample and review this new app, and enjoyed sharing it with my 1.5 year old son.  Even though my son doesn’t know Winnie the Pooh very well, he was mesmerized by the colors and the perfectly simple story.  As a puzzle book, there are a few puzzles and games that fit in with the story of the book.  Although my son doesn’t always seem to fully grasp the puzzle shape concept, he showed interest and attempted to put the shapes together to make a picture.  Another puzzle, based on color matching, is an excellent way to keep children entertained while learning at the same time.  A wonderful app for android users with youngsters.

The “Winnie the Pooh: What’s a Bear to Do?” Puzzle Book App is available for $2.99 in Android MarketTM.

For more information, visit www.disneybookapps.com and www.facebook.com/DisneyDigitalBooks, or follow@DisneyDigitalBooks on Twitter.
