Disney Hodgepodge: Five More Random Disney Things I Learned

Disney Hodgepodge: Five More Random Disney Things I Learned

Fresh off last week’s list of five Disney things I learned on our recent trip is another installment.

Beware of Hidden Fees. This first one isn’t good news, my Disney friends. I was initially charged a $20 processing fee for two cases of water I had shipped to my resort from Costco.

Three months earlier, I ordered a case of water from Staples and shipped it to a different resort and there were no processing charges. The difference, it turns out, is whether the resort has a business center.

After some investigation (and a call to the resort manager), I found out that non-USPS packages are received by the business center, if the resort has one. Since the businesses centers are operated independently from Disney, they may charge a processing fee. My water arrived via UPS, the business center received it, and I was charged by weight. The manager did refund the charges to my room after I expressed my dissatisfaction but had no satisfactory answer as to how to avoid these charges in the future if I ship packages via UPS. The moral is I will continue to ship my packages of kids’ supplies via USPS and have water delivered by a local delivery service.

You Won’t Find any Mickey Impersonators Among Cast Members. My six year-old was having a moment and in my own moment of frustration, I foolishly told him if he didn’t start listening, I would tell Mickey not to bring his gift that day. (Mickey visits our room while we’re at the theme parks and leaves a small gift for the boys each day). Wouldn’t you know it but he called my bluff and wanted to know exactly how I was going to contact Mickey? I bought myself a few minutes, grabbed a crayon, and headed to the front desk. I asked the friendly Cast Member to write a short note from Mickey on resort letterhead; I was afraid I wouldn’t be able to disguise my handwriting. She politely refused and explained Cast Members cannot write notes from Mickey Mouse. She did give me a piece of letterhead though. My left hand, a crayon, and the letterhead did the trick and Mickey paid my son a visit every day for the rest of the trip.

Call Maintenance to Help Next Person. Every visit, there are unfortunately some maintenance issues with our resort room, from a toaster that doesn’t toast to an air-conditioning unit that is very noisy due to a fan that needed to be cleaned to issues with the toilet working properly. We’ve always called maintenance and the issue has been resolved immediately but it surprises me that the previous guests lived with such maintenance issues. It’s my hope that by calling maintenance, not only did I have a more pleasant stay in the resort room, but so will the next guest.

Tomorrowland Speedway. The steering wheel of the Tomorrowland Speedway vehicles feel sticky. My husband thought it was by design to mimic a real racecar but it was a bit disconcerting. My son also received a driver’s license from the friendly Cast Members after his ride.

Lost and Found is Magical. We lost our theme park bag not once but twice on our past trip. Forty-five minutes after we discovered it missing the first time we retrieved it from Guest Relations at the front of the park. It was truly magical. The second time we lost our bag, luck was not on our side. Our bag was never turned in to Lost and Found.

I learned a bit about the process. Bags that are turned in are sent to one of the local shops. When the service that delivers packages to your resort arrives for a pickup at the merchandise location, it also picks up any lost items and brings them to Guest Relations. If a lost item is deemed suspicious (often backpacks), security first examines the lost item which can add a delay. Any items that are not claimed by park close are picked up the next morning before park open and are brought to the central Lost and Found, located at the Transportation and Ticket Center. If you call Lost and Found after 9am, be sure to have as much information as possible regarding the item and when it was lost. If the item is recovered after you leave the Walt Disney World Resort, they will ship it to you.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. I love that I learn new things on every Walt Disney World visit.

Pixar jumps into the Oil Business

Pixar jumps into the Oil Business

Yes you read that title right. Pixar is in the oil business but its not the Pixar that we all know and love. It seems Paramount Resources Ltd (which is obviously a rip off of Paramount Studios) is changing it’s name to Pixar Petroleum Corp. A sort of homage of sorts to the beloved Cartoon Studio.

Here is part of the press release:

Paramount Resources Ltd. (TSX:POU) (“Paramount” or the “Company”) is pleased to announce the reorganization of all of the Company’s oil sands and carbonate bitumen interests into a new wholly-owned subsidiary, Pixar Petroleum Corp. (“Pixar”). The reorganization is being undertaken to create a focused, self-funding oil sands entity in order to accelerate the development of Paramount’s bitumen interests. Dr. William Roach has been appointed as Pixar’s President and Chief Executive Officer. In addition, the initial independent resource estimates for the Saleski and other carbonate bitumen properties have now been completed and the Company is pleased to announce the results.

REORGANIZATION

Upon completion of the reorganization in early-December, all of Paramount’s oil sands and carbonate bitumen leases will be owned by Pixar – including Paramount’s Hoole and Saleski leases.

In total, Pixar will own approximately 275 sections of Crown oil sands leases in the western Athabasca region of Alberta, the majority of which are 100 percent owned. These leases are prospective in multiple formations, primarily for thermal in-situ development, but also have potential for cold production.

PIXAR’SEXECUTIVE LEADERSHIP TEAM

Mr. James Riddell, Paramount’s President and Chief Operating Officer, has been appointed the Executive Chairman of Pixar.

Dr. William Roach has been appointed President and Chief Executive Officer of Pixar. From 2004 to 2010, Dr. Roach served on the Board of Directors and as President and Chief Executive Officer of UTS Energy Corporation (“UTS”), which at that time was a publicly listed energy company focused on the exploration, development and production of oil sands deposits in the Athabasca Oil Sands Area of northeastern Alberta. During his tenure, the market capitalization of UTS increased from $50 million to over $1.75 billion. Prior to UTS, Dr. Roach had a successful 20-year career directing and managing the design, construction and delivery of large capital-intensive national and international upstream oil and gas projects. In the coming year, Dr. Roach will primarily focus on overseeing the submission of a development application for Pixar’s Hoole oil sands property and building the team necessary to execute that development.

Mr. Martin Sandell has been appointed Senior Vice President, Development of Pixar. Mr. Sandell was previously Vice President Engineering of UTS and has 25 years of experience leading large diverse oil and gas projects from conception to operation in Canada, the United Kingdom, the North Sea and the Gulf of Mexico.

Mr. William Robinson has been appointed Vice President, Geoscience of Pixar. Prior to joining Pixar, Mr. Robinson oversaw the exploration and delineation of Paramount’s oil sands assets.

PIXAR’S PROPERTIES

Pixar’s properties will include approximately 56 sections of land at Hoole, which are primarily prospective for bitumen in the Grand Rapids formation and the carbonate properties, which are primarily prospective for bitumen in the Grosmont formation. The carbonate properties will include approximately 15 sections of land at Saleski and 186 sections of land in other areas (the “Other Carbonate Leases”), including leases at Orchid, Granor and House. The new subsidiary will also own approximately 18 additional sections in the Athabasca Oil Sands Area of northeastern Alberta. Pixar’s near-term plans are expected to focus on the development of its 100 percent owned oil sands leases at Hoole and the further delineation of its carbonate bitumen leases at Saleski.

I don’t know about you but that is a dirty little trick to capitalize on the Disney Brand. Oh well I think I will go eat a Dove Ice Cream bar then jump in the shower and use my Dove Shampoo. (Not owned by the same Company)

When you need a break from the Walt Disney World theme park holiday crowds, or you would just like to do some Christmas shopping, look no further than Downtown Disney. There’s no better shopping spot for the ultimate Disney fan.  With fabulous stores like Once Upon a Toy, World of Disney, and Disney’s Days of Christmas, the Downtown Disney area offers up a holiday feast for the eyes, ears, and wallet.

Picture this…there are 365 days a year when Florida residents and WDW guests can shop for holiday merchandise at the Disney’s Days of Christmas shop in Downtown Disney.  Here you’ll find items like ornaments, Christmas hats, stockings, each with a Disney twist and available for purchase every day of the year.  But only during the holiday season will you see 150 tractor-trailer truckloads full of decorations spread out across 24 resorts, four theme parks, Downtown Disney and other locations.

While you’re doing your Downtown Disney shopping, be sure to attend some of the activities held during the Festival of the Seasons there from now until January 8.  You can grab a photo with Santa Claus in person at Santa’s Chalet  until Dec 24th. Festival of the Seasons showcases holiday carolers plus traditional songs performed by jazz, pop, and Latin musical entertainers.  You may also catch a glimpse of costumed stilt walkers, street performers, and at certain times, a holiday dance party with a deejay.

No trip to Downtown Disney would be complete without a snack from Goofy’s Candy Co.  Chocolate-dipped caramel covered apples, cupcakes, pasteries… the suggary choices are endless, but you’ll be glad you made the trip.

ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex to Add Four Outdoor Playing Fields

ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex to Add Four Outdoor Playing Fields

Leading amateur and pro sports venue at Walt Disney World Resort adding new fields and additional lights, digital video boards and audio systems; Changes offer more time and space for competition

More than 300,000 youth athletes nationwide will now be able to compete and train on the country’s biggest amateur sports stage annually through the latest expansion plans scheduled for ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at Walt Disney World Resort near Orlando, Fla.

The sports complex, already the leading multi-sport venue for amateur and professional sports in the country, is adding additional playing fields and installing more lights, digital video boards and audio systems, giving more athletes the opportunity to participate in a one-of-a-kind ESPN-style sports experience. The expansion plans, which are already underway, will involve 25 additional acres, bringing the sports complex’s footprint to more than 270 acres.

As part of the project, which is expected to be complete by early 2012, the sports complex is adding four multi-purpose playing fields on the north side of the complex for football, soccer, lacrosse and field hockey. The new fields, which will increase the complex’s outdoor playing fields to more than 30, will be equipped with full lighting and scoreboards, plus digital video boards and audio systems. In addition, lighting will be added to five existing playing fields, increasing potential playing hours for many of the outdoor events that are among the 350 sports events that take place at the complex each year.

The demand and popularity of youth sports continues to grow even amid the current economy. We will continue to explore additional ways that we can provide more youth athletes with opportunities to be active and compete in a unique sports atmosphere.

— Ken Potrock, senior vice president of Disney Sports Enterprises and Downtown Disney

The project is the latest in a series of expansions and enhancements to the complex, including the 2008 opening of the Jostens Center, a state-of-the-art field house featuring six full-size basketball courts, and the ESPN rebranding of the sports complex in 2010.

The Muppets Debut on the Disney Fantasy

The Muppets Debut on the Disney Fantasy

The Muppets make their debut on Disney Cruise Line in a new adventure game aboard the Disney Fantasy, the new Disney ship setting sail in March 2012.

Throughout the Disney Fantasy, guests will discover creative and whimsical technical innovations – whether it’s mealtime, playtime or bedtime. “Paintings” spring to life. Guests’ own drawings dance with Disney characters. Interior staterooms have a porthole view of the sea outside. Animated characters chat with guests. The floor beneath children comes alive to movements. Among the highlights:

Muppets Adventure Game

The Muppets are coming to the Disney Fantasy! While playing “The Case of the Stolen Show,” guests take an interactive adventure quest around the ship, uncovering clues via more than a dozen pieces of Enchanted Art and physical “evidence.”

The adventure begins with Kermit, Miss Piggy, Fozzie, Gonzo, Animal and a cast of more than 20 Muppets preparing to stage a big performance. But there’s a problem: Kermit’s banjo is missing, Fozzie’s squirting flower has vanished, Gonzo’s crash helmet has gone astray, Animal’s drum sticks have disappeared and the Swedish Chef can’t find his cleaver! All of the props for the big show have been stolen by a cunning thief (or more likely, another Muppet).

Pepe the King Prawn offers to take on detective duties to help Kermit and the rest of the Muppets find their missing props. Kermit, worried about Pepe’s lack of detective skills, turns to the guests for help.

Guided by a map and holding a unique game card in front of select pieces of Enchanted Art, guests unveil clues and find missing props. Elsewhere on the ship, guests may check a Muppets message board and find a Muppet-sized stateroom door to discover clues. Their mission is to identify the culprit and solve the crime before it’s time to raise the curtain and light the lights on the Muppets’ big show.

“The Case of the Stolen Show” is a self-paced adventure game designed for guests ages nine and older. It features several possible endings and multiple randomized events – so each time a guest plays, they have a different gaming experience.

Enchanted Art

Throughout the Disney Fantasy, more than 20 pieces of Enchanted Art, inspired by classic Disney characters and animations, immerse guests in Disney storytelling in a completely new way.

As guests pause to admire an individual piece of Enchanted Art, it magically comes alive. Some examples of Enchanted Art new to the Disney Fantasy…

  • Dual circus art posters featuring Dumbo and Timothy Q. Mouse flying from one frame into the other — a nod to the Disney Fantasy stern characters.
  • Walt Disney animating three new clips that spring from his sketch pad featuring the “Fab Five” (Mickey, Minnie, Goofy, Donald and Pluto).
  • Scenes from Disney’s classic animated film “Fantasia” depicting dancing fairies set to “Nutcracker Suite” and a frolicking unicorn and satyr set to “The Pastoral Symphony.”
  • Fanciful animations of “Alice in Wonderland” inspired by Disney Legend Mary Blair’s artwork.
  • “Pinkie Daisy” inspired by Thomas Lawrence’s painting “Sarah Barrett Moulton: Pinkie.”

While Enchanted Art looks like other hanging art pieces around the ship, it is actually a framed LCD screen that utilizes technology to create special effects. Enchanted Art “recognizes” a guest is present and activates several seconds of animation. Guests may see new and different animation when they visit the Enchanted Art another time.

“Animation Magic” at Animator’s Palate

Animator’s Palate on the Disney Fantasy brings the magic of Disney animation into the dining room with a new show called “Animation Magic.” The dinner show celebrates the magic of Disney animation and allows families to create and participate in a whole new way.

As guests are seated at their tables, they are invited to draw a character of their own using a simple template on their placemat. Then, just before dinner, house lights dim and a sprinkling of pixie dust illuminates the room.

Imagery is revealed on several large monitors showing black and white drawings of Mickey Mouse. Mickey then places the Sorcerer’s hat upon his head, transforming all of the animation into color.

Mickey invites guests to sit back, relax and enjoy a taste of animation as a montage of memorable food-themed moments from Disney and Disney•Pixar films is displayed, set to the show tune “Be Our Guest.” After the number is complete, guests are encouraged to complete their own drawings … so they may be whisked off to Mickey Mouse, who is conjuring a magical final act.

After dinner, Mickey returns for the exciting finale. With a musical crescendo, he works his magic and conjures the guests’ drawings – now fully animated and brought to life – into the onscreen action.

A parade starts as Mickey leads the guests’ drawings in a march across the screens around the dining room. The animation of the drawings becomes increasingly more elaborate, and then the drawings step into scenes from beloved Disney movies and skip, skate and dance side-by-side with characters such as Mickey Mouse, Jiminy Cricket, Cinderella and Snow White.

At the conclusion of the show, Mickey returns to say “so long” while credits roll on screen showing each guest’s name listed as a guest animator. To commemorate the experience, guests’ drawings are returned to them … with an added touch: a golden seal proclaiming them an Official Disney Animator.

Living Characters

In Disney’s Oceaneer Club and Disney’s Oceaneer Lab youth areas, Disney characters come to life and interact with children in one-of-a-kind experiences…

  • Crush, the animated sea turtle from the Disney•Pixar motion picture “Finding Nemo,” and Stitch, the mischievous animated alien from the motion picture “Lilo & Stitch,” appear on a 103-inch plasma screen.
  • The characters chat, play and joke with kids in live, unrehearsed, personalized conversations, using sophisticated, voice-activated animation.

Living Characters create ‘Undersea Magic’

The Living Characters fun continues at Animator’s Palate restaurant…

  • Once guests are seated for dinner, the entire restaurant goes through a transformation as dinnertime is also show time for “Undersea Magic.”
  • The transformation involves more than 100 wall-mounted LCD screens that switch to scenes of a vivid undersea environment – as if the restaurant is transported to the ocean floor and the screens are windows providing views of a colorful coral reef and creatures that reside there.
  • Crush, the surfer-dude sea turtle from Disney•Pixar’s “Finding Nemo,” swims around the restaurant from “window” to “window,” engaging in live impromptu interactions with guests.

Magical Porthole

The Disney Fantasy carries on the spirit of innovation with a cruise industry first for all 150 inside staterooms – a “window” to the world with a real-time view outside the ship…

  • Each room features a wall-mounted monitor framed to have the appearance of a porthole. The monitor displays a real-time video view outside the ship – sometimes supplemented by a little “magic” in the form of animated Disney characters that “fly by,” such as Peach the starfish from the Disney•Pixar film “Finding Nemo,” Dumbo the flying elephant and Mickey Mouse.
  • High-definition cameras on the exterior of the ship feed the video to the monitors. Camera positions correspond with stateroom locations – port or starboard, from bow to stern.

Magic PlayFloor

Disney’s Oceaneer Club and Disney’s Oceaneer Lab feature a Magic PlayFloor, a cruise-industry first that blends the latest in gaming technology with Disney’s panache for storytelling…

  • Located in the main gathering space in both venues, the interactive floor allows children to engage in group activities where their movements control the action.
  • The PlayFloor is designed with 16 light pads on the perimeter that detect motion and location and trigger actions. There are 28 monitors integrated with one another to create a grid display 15 feet by 15 feet on the center of the PlayFloor.
  • The games are thematically tied to Disney stories and characters – to everything from “Cars” and “Tron” to “Peter Pan” and “The Princess and the Frog.”
  • Youth counselors use the Magic PlayFloor during storytelling activities where children fly over the streets of London with Peter Pan, help their frog feast on a bug banquet, leap over lasers with Stitch, race a car like Lightning McQueen and step into the world of Tron.

Skyline

On the Disney Fantasy, adult guests step into a world that’s all their own at Europa – a nighttime entertainment district exclusively for guests 18 and older that features sophisticated bars and lounges inspired by the very best in European travel.

Skyline is a chic bar that provides ever-changing birds-eye views of stunning city skylines. The venue’s nine “windows to the world” are actually 65-inch LCD screens that depict different locales in panorama. Guests glimpse ever-changing views of spectacular cities such as Paris, London, Barcelona, Florence, Athens, Budapest and St. Petersburg.

I Won’t Be Able To Eat Anything – Special Dietary Requests at Disney World

I Won't Be Able To Eat Anything - Special Dietary Requests at Disney World

Have you ever heard this? Do you think this is accurate?  Would Walt Disney World allow this to happen? As science and medicine progress, it is being found that many more people than were previously thought have food allergies or sensitivities. There are also many food issues among folks with chronic diseases. This issue runs the gamut from the very young to Oldies like me. Thankfully for me, my only food issue is that I love it way too much.

Disney takes these food issues very seriously and offers solutions at the large majority of their restaurants so their guests will not be subjected to the problems that can happen as a result of these allergies/sensitivities. Let’s take a look at what some of the major food allergies are:

  • gluten or wheat
  • shellfish
  • soy
  • lactose or dairy
  • peanuts and tree nuts
  • fish
  • eggs
  • corn

The best way to avoid problems with these types of allergies/issues is to note them when you make your table service reservations or if you prefer, discuss them with the Chef or Restaurant Manager upon your arrival. These things can generally be handled quite easily

There are other types of dietary issues that can cause problems for those folks with either metabolic disorders or multiple allergies. Some of these are:

  • Allergy or intolerance not listed above under Common Food Allergies
  • PKU
  • Metabolic disorders
  • A single guest with multiple allergies/intolerances or multiple guests with allergies/intolerances within the same party

These types of dietary issues require a bit more planning and Disney would like you to contact them at least 14 days in advance of your arrival by e-mailing them your information (restaurant, specific issue, how many members in your party with the issue, and any other pertinent information). The specific e-mail address is: [email protected]. You should have all of your reservations made and the reservation information assembled before contacting them.

You are not restricted to table service restaurants if you have one of the simpler allergies mentioned above. The following counter service eateries can also deal with the simpler allergies:

Animal Kingdom:

Hollywood Studios:

Epcot:

Magic Kingdom:

For further information you can visit the Walt Disney World Special Dietary Requirements web page. Walt Disney World is vastly experienced in handling dining needs of every type from those mentioned above to providing Kosher Meals upon request. Trust them but make sure you give them the correct information when they ask. After all, they have your and their best interests at heart. As always, enjoy your visit to Walt Disney World!!

New Year’s Eve is one of the biggest fireworks evenings of the year at Walt Disney World Resort, a place where fireworks are both spectacular and an every-night occurrence. Here’s a snapshot of what’s in store:
