Capturing Disney in Pictures: 1st Day of Christmas at Epcot

Capturing Disney in Pictures: 1st Day of Christmas at Epcot
Pluto topiary at Epcot Center

Every photo has a story.

The holiday season is a beautiful time to pay a visit to Epcot.  This topiary, one of the many artistic floral decorations on display,  provides an excellent photo opportunity.  You’ll find a wide variety of photographic possibilities throughout Walt Disney World before the New Year arrives.

Picture this…eleven countries will be decorated for Holidays Around the World at Epcot Showcase.  As you make your way from country to country, you may see some of Disney’s 1,300 decorated trees spread throughout all of Disney World.  Now is a great time to pick up a holiday ornament in one of these eleven pavilions to display on your own tree for years to come.

Looking for a memorable family event when you finish your holiday ornament shopping??

Over at the America Gardens Theatre Stage at Epcot, you can hear music of the holiday season during the Candlelight Processional. Highlighted by a celebrity narrator, the Nativity story is backed by fanfare trumpets, a 52-member orchestra, and a 350-voice choir made up of high school students, local choirs and Cast Members. By using different conductors, singers, and narrators for many of the performances, this creates an ever-so-slightly different theatrical version when you experience a new show. Disney guests return year after year for an exciting  musical. Delighting holiday crowds at Epcot for nearly two decades, the Candlelight Processional will be a memorable experience for you’ll cherish for years to come.

Be sure to check the viewing times for the night of your visit, but there are Candlelight Processional shows at 5:00, 6:45, and 8:15 most nights through December 30.

Thanks for stopping by for a photographical Disney ride!

Meet Santa Claus at Walt Disney World

Meet Santa Claus at Walt Disney World

Santa’s Chalet at the Downtown Disney Marketplace is now open. Visiting hours are from noon to 10 p.m. through Dec. 24. Once Santa takes off for his long night of travel, Santa Goofy takes over at the chalet. Goofy will greet guests from 3 to 10 p.m. Dec. 25 to Jan. 1.

Santa’s daily appearances at The American Adventure at Epcot begin Nov. 25 and continue through Dec. 24. Each country in the World Showcase also features storytellers who describe local holiday traditions. In many countries, the storyteller is a representation of Santa, such as Pere Noel in France and Father Christmas in England.

At the Magic Kingdom, Santa is also greeting guests during Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party, in addition to his appearances in Mickey’s Once Upon A Christmastime Parade. Remaining party dates are tonight, Nov. 27, 29, 30 and Dec. 2, 4, 6, 7, 9,11,13,14,16 and 18. (Dec. 18 is sold out.)

If he’s not called back to the North Pole, Santa likely will be in the Magic Kingdom after the last Christmas party and in most hotel lobbies between 5 and 9 p.m. on Christmas Eve. (At Fort Wilderness, he can be found on the porch at Crockett’s Tavern.)

Coming to Disney Spring 2012

Coming to Disney Spring 2012

Flying, Sailing, Casting Spells and Staying in Regal Rooms Are All Part of the Walt Disney World Fun in Early 2012

In spring 2012, Disney guests can fly like no elephant (or Disney guest) has ever flown, subdue villains with magic spells, sail the azure waters of the Caribbean aboard a brand-new luxury ship, and settle down for the night in rooms celebrating Disney royalty.

January-May 2012 at Walt Disney World Resort also is a time when road runners take to the streets and byways of the Vacation Kingdom in marquee runDisney events, Major League Baseball returns to Champion Stadium, Epcot blooms and Disney celebrates the possibilities of youth.

Here’s a look at what’s in store …

Look! Dumbo is going the wrong way!

Actually, Dumbo is just reversing decades of flying in counter-clockwise circles. Call it “unwinding,” if you will. And in a new location within Magic Kingdom.

Guests will board Dumbo the Flying Elephant from the lovable critter’s left side — like mounting a horse … and unlike the way guests hop aboard for a whirl at Disney parks on three continents. It is scheduled to begin happening in early 2012 when select experiences in the Storybook Circus neighborhood of New Fantasyland debut just northeast of Mad Tea Party.

Also early 2012, the existing Dumbo attraction near Prince Charming Regal Carrousel will close, be refurbished and be moved to a location in Storybook Circus next to the new Dumbo attraction. The result when completed later in 2012: double Dumbos, one going this-a-way, one going that-a-way … a real circus act, if you will.

There also will be a “big top” that serves as a queue area for the popular attraction. It will feature a variety of interactive experiences currently being developed.

Two other Storybook Circus elements planned for opening early in the year are The Barnstormer and Fantasyland Station. Guests who enjoyed The Barnstormer at Goofy’s Wiseacre Farm will be happy to know the junior coaster thrills of that attraction are back with a thematic change: Goofy has sold the farm and is now a circus stunt pilot and magician, The Great Goofini. The completely re-imagined train station will serve as the gateway to Storybook Circus and all Fantasyland points beyond.

Cruella de Vil, meet the apprentice sorcerers!

And you, too, Scar. And, for that matter, a legion of other Disney villains!

When Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom premieres in early 2012, Merlin the magician will recruit guests as apprentice sorcerers to undertake missions to subdue the “baddies” in what Disney Imagineering calls an “immersive role-playing adventure.”

Armed with what appear to be nothing more potent than cards, guests engage with villains at special locations throughout the park. But the fact is: The cards have magic powers players can use in their quest to defeat the villains.

A ‘Dreamy’ ship with a ‘Fantasy’ identity all its own

When Disney Fantasy departs on her maiden voyage March 31, 2012, the new Disney Cruise Line ship will bring to life many innovative features of the recently launched sister ship Disney Dream. But these siblings are anything but identical twins!

The 4,000-passenger Fantasy will take guests on week-long Caribbean cruises during which distinctive experiences begin with the Art Nouveau-inspired details of the three-deck atrium lobby where the pièce de résistance is a cast bronze statue of Mademoiselle Minnie Mouse dressed in vintage 1920s-30s fashion with a parasol and steamer luggage at her side.

Distinctive touches continue at meal time, show time and party time aboard Disney Fantasy:

  • Animator’s Palate, a dinnertime favorite on all the Disney cruise ships, features a brand new show, “Animation Magic,” for which guests do a bit of character doodling or drawing. The climax of the show involves Sorcerer Mickey conjuring the guests’ drawings — fully animated and brought to life — into onscreen action.
  • For a fully coiffed entrance to dinner at the new Royal Court Restaurant, appointments can be made for aspiring young princes and princesses, ages 3-12, at Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique, a popular salon at Walt Disney World Resort and Disneyland Resort that’s taking to the high seas for the first time with special makeovers: Captain Mickey Mouse, Princess Minnie Mouse and First Mate Minnie Mouse plus Under the Sea packages.
  • On pirate party nights, the salon transforms into the Pirate’s League, where swashbuckling boys, girls and grownups can get ready for the pirate life with two pirate packages: First Mate (includes bandana, facial scars tattoos, fake teeth, earring, eye patch, sword and sheath) or Empress (includes bandana, shimmering makeup, face gem, tattoos, nail polish, earring, eye patch, sword and sheath).
  • The exclusive live theater production “Disney’s Aladdin — A Musical Spectacular” is staged in the luxurious, 1,340-seat Walt Disney Theatre. In the fast-paced 45-minute musical comedy, Aladdin is back as the “street rat” of Agrabah meeting up with a Genie who grants him three wishes, battling the evil Jafar, and falling in love with Princess Jasmine.
  • Guests 18 and older can head off to an evening of club hopping at Europa, a nighttime entertainment district featuring sophisticated bars and trendy lounges inspired by the very best in European travel.

To learn more about Disney Cruise Line or to book a vacation, guests can visit disneycruise.com, call Disney Cruise Line at 888/DCL-2500 or contact Pixie Vacations.

Rooms with a ‘royal touch’

Imagine waking up in a place where Disney Princes and Princesses have stayed. Beginning mid-February 2012, when Walt Disney World guests stay in the Royal Guest Rooms at Disney’s Port Orleans Resort—-Riverside, they’ll discover special treasures left behind by the stars of favorite animated films such as “Aladdin,” “Beauty and the Beast” and “The Princess and the Frog.”

In quarters befitting not only the young Princes and Princesses of the family but also their grown-up King and Queen parents, guests can unwind amid remarkable décor. They’ll be able to watch “fireworks” swirl as they recline in ornate beds, curl up in custom linens and more. It’s majesty and fun, all rolled into one. Each of the 512 Royal Guest Rooms sleeps up to four guests in two queen beds.

Guests can reserve their regal surroundings online at disneyworld.com, by calling 407-W DISNEY, or contact Pixie Vacations

Blooms, Baseball and more

Several popular events return to Walt Disney World Resort in early 2012. Here’s a snapshot:

  • The Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival presented by HGTV is a spring special event filled with Disney character topiaries, a colorful array of flowers, gardens, live music and special presentations. The 19th edition will burst into full bloom March 7, 2012, and continued through May 20, 2012. More information is available online at disneyworld.com/flowerandgarden.
  • Major League Baseball’s Atlanta Braves return to ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in February 2012 for their 15th season of spring training at Walt Disney World Resort, including a schedule of “Grapefruit League” games in March at 9,500-seat Champion Stadium. For more information, guests can visit www.espnwwos.com or call 407/939-GAME.
  • Every mile is filled with Disney fun at the 2012 Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend presented by CIGNA on Jan. 5-8, 2012. It is a weekend of races that are both magical and memorable, climaxed by the 19th Disney Marathon through all four Walt Disney World theme parks. The weekend also features a half marathon and Disney’s Health & Fitness Expo. More information is available at www.rundisney.com.
  • Disney’s Princess Half Marathon Weekend on Feb. 24-26, 2012, brings women of all ages together to participate in a magical event designed just for them. The Disney Princesses are the inspiration for the weekend’s events and will focus on the attributes every princess possesses: commitment, courage, determination, fantasy, perseverance, and strength. The weekend includes the signature 13.1-mile run through Magic Kingdom and Epcot plus a family 5K, kids’ races and Disney’s Fit for a Princess Expo. More information is available at www.rundisney.com.
  • The fifth class of Disney’s Dreamers Academy with Steve Harvey and Essence Magazine will be in session March 8-11, 2012, when 100 high school students from across America converge on Walt Disney World Resort for a stimulating and inspiring extended weekend of special events, immersive educational workshops, personal enhancement and professional enrichment. More information is available www.disneysdreamersacademy.com.

Contemporary Resort’s Health and Wellness Suites Cancelled

Contemporary Resort's Health and Wellness Suites Cancelled

Apparently people were less than interested in having cardio equipment in their rooms and tea tree oils in their shower. The Health and Wellness suites that were set to debut at the Contemporary Resort in late 2011 have been cancelled.

The suites on the 14th floor where the new wellness suites were going to be are still going to be remodeled but are no longer set to gear toward the health and wellness experience, as was the original intention announced back in April.

Why do you think the wellness suites are no longer in the plan?

Stan Lee Narrates New Spider-Man Storybook App from Disney Publishing’s Marvel Origins Series

Stan Lee Narrates New Spider-Man Storybook App from Disney Publishing’s Marvel Origins Series

Disney Publishing Worldwide(DPW) has launched today a new, interactive storybook app for young readers featuring the voice of comic book legend and Spider-Man co-creator Stan Lee. “The Amazing Spider-Man: An Origin Story”app provides a new way for DPW’s hundreds of thousands of readers worldwide to experience comic stories. Complementing the original book from the Marvel Origins storybook series, the app retells the story of Peter Parker’s transition from teen to Super Hero with music, activities, and more.

“The Amazing Spider-Man app is a terrific first introduction to the Spider-Man story for young readers,” said Stan Lee. “It’s exciting to be a part of the creation of this authentic, interactive reading experience for children.”

“The Amazing Spider-Man: An Origin Story” storybook app features interactive, action-packed artwork, sound effects, music, and story-based activities that allow readers to test their strength, swing through the city, and use web-shooters to stop burglars – all with the touch of a finger. Lee lends his voice and bravado to the app in “Read to Me” mode for an extra “POW!”, along with three other reading modes that cater to a variety of reading levels.

Children also have the chance to help Spider-Man suit up in his gear through drawing exercises and hunt for secret “No-Prizes” within the app, which were originally implemented in 1964 by Lee when a Spider-Man fan found a continuity error in a comic and wrote a letter to the publisher.

“The Amazing Spider-Man: An Origin Story” is available in English for $6.99 from the App Store on the iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch or at www.itunes.com/appstore. Following the initial release, additional languages will be added for localization across Europe and Asia.

Capturing Disney in Pictures: 5th Day of Christmas at Disney’s Beach Club Resort

Capturing Disney in Pictures: 5th Day of Christmas at Disney's Beach Club Resort
Lighthouse near the Beach Club Resort

Every photo has a story.

Walt Disney World is a busy place during the holidays. That’s probably an understatement; it’s an amazingly busy place.

Picture this…there are 12,213 parking spots in the Magic Kingdom parking lot.  If you don’t arrive to claim your parking spot by about 10 a.m. on Christmas morning, you’ll be out of luck, because that’s about the time the parking lot fills up.  If you’re a Disney night-owl like me, and you can’t catch that 7 a.m. wake up call, where to go now?

Head on over to Disney’s Beach Club Resort.  The Beach Club models the architecture of 20th century mid-Atlantic resorts, showcasing pastel colors, intricate woodwork, and a relaxing beachy charm.  If you decide you just need to ride some roller coasters, you are within walking distance of both Epcot and Disney’s Hollywood Studios.  The Beach Club Resort is the creation of architect Robert A. M. Stern, the master also responsible for designing the Disney’s Boardwalk  Resort, Disney’s Newport Bay Resort, and the Cheyenne Resort in Disneyland Paris.

A must-see Disney holiday decoration is front and center in the lobby of the Beach Club.  Here you will find an amazing gingerbread carousel, featuring ponies made of yummy chocolate and fondant, giant candy canes, and hand-painted portraits of Disney Characters. It’s a culinary-artwork sight to behold.

Now make your way down the resort stairs to the Disney BoardWalk entertainment district and out to Crescent Lake. You can walk the entire circumference of the lake at a leisurely pace in about 20 minutes.  One memorable stopping point is a small lighthouse at the end of a narrow causeway overlooking the Beach Club itself.  But be warned, because if you stop at some of the merchandise stores or restaurants, this sight-seeing walk could take a bit more time.  There’s also classic midway games, occasional street performers,  dancing at the Atlantic Dance Hall, or you can enjoy a “dueling pianos” show at Jellyroll’s.

The Magic Kingdom is still pretty busy. You have plenty of time for another lap around the lake.

Thanks for stopping by for a photographical Disney ride!
