Absolutely NO Diapers at Disney. Well, Maybe!

Absolutely NO Diapers at Disney. Well, Maybe!

There are many questions about Disney that spark heated debates among Disney fans. The one I believe is the most discussed, and the question I get asked most often by friends and clients alike is, “What is a good age to start taking my child to Disney World?” I usually tell them that I believe the right age depends on the child and the parents. Then, I follow that up by telling them about choosing the right time of year to visit, explaining about height requirements, etc.; then, we normally start talking about their wishes for their trip and the children. The decision is ultimately theirs, but my opinion for my own life has for years been set in stone.

What I have always said to my closest friends and relatives is that I personally would NEVER take a child in diapers to Disney. I am not the most patient person so lugging a diaper bag around, spending half my time in the baby centers rather than in the parks, not being able to ride every ride, having to go back to the resort for mid-day breaks, pushing a stroller around in the crowd, and dealing with a cranky child is not something that interests me. All these things, coupled with the fact that the child wouldn’t even remember the trip, are the reasons I said I personally would never take a child to Walt Disney World until after they were potty-trained and could walk around the parks without a stroller. Absolutely NO diapers at Disney! Well, that was before!

Isn’t it funny how life changes us; how it softens our hearts? Paramount to my hard-headed, and possibly perceived hard-hearted, ways is that I am first and foremost a Disney lover. When my first grandchild, Aleyah, was born at the end of October I was head over heels in love. What is the thing I want to share most with those I love? Disney! I am already planning our trip for November.

Now that you know my secret, you should know that I have added to my list of considerations when it comes to taking a young child to Disney. These new additions include: who will be going, when will you be visiting, where you will be staying, and how much do you love Disney? For me, this year’s will be a multigenerational trip consisting of  my husband and myself, our adult daughter, our youngest (adult) son, and our oldest son with his wife and Aleyah. With a ratio of 6 adults to 1 baby, we should be able to pull this off with flying colors.:)

We will be spending Thanksgiving at WDW just as we have many years before so the weather will be cooler and the Christmas decorations will be up. We will stay on property for the convenience, as well as for being completely submerged in Disney 24 hours a day. Being a faithful Disney fan and frequent visitor, I can’t wait to share all Disney has to offer with Aleyah.

Because I want to make this trip enjoyable for everyone, I will plan carefully to help make the trip as magical as possible. That said, there are certain offerings that Disney has spent a lot of time and money developing, and that we will be taking advantage of for the very first time since my youngest was already 6 when we made our first trip (not because of my “baby rule” but just because we could not afford to go until then). These Disney offerings will help us to keep baby, and everyone else, happy and keep the trip at ‘maximum magic potential.’

Baby Care Centers: These comfortable and clean centers, hosted by Carnation Baby Formulas, are available throughout Walt Disney World Resort to make taking care of baby more enjoyable while in the parks and at Downtown Disney. The centers offer changing rooms, nursing areas, electrical outlets, wooden rockers, and a calm atmosphere. They also have necessities for sale such as Carnation Good Start formulas, Gerber foods and juices, Huggies diapers and wipes, bottles, lotions, sunscreen, and some children’s over-the-counter medications. For our convenience, they also house a microwave and sink.

Stroller rentals: Since we drive to Walt Disney World each year, we will take Aleyah’s stroller with us to WDW. But if we need to, it’s great to know that we could rent a stroller at a variety of locations throughout the parks and Downtown Disney. For guests like us who would require a stroller rental for multiple days, we would be able to purchase a length-of-stay rental ticket which would allow us to make a one-time payment for as many days of rental as we would need. Each time we enter a park, we would just show our receipt at the stroller rental location and we’d be expedited through the queue with a reduced wait time. The multiple day rental fee is $13.00 per day for a single-passenger stroller.

Rider Swap: Disney’s Rider Swap option is available at select attractions in all 4 theme parks at Walt Disney World. Rider Swap is when guests take turns waiting with the child who is too small to ride, then “swap” with another adult guest from their party to experience the ride without standing in line twice. Although my son has visited many times, his wife has never been to Disney before (yea, another first timer with whom I will get to share Disney), so I would like for he and his wife to be able to ride together as much as possible and have lots of fun together. For this reason, I am planning to share the rider-swap responsibilities with them. My hubby and I will do the ride-swap part of the time so we can all enjoy riding by switching off with this duty.

Disney resort transportation: Aleyah will likely get tired, overwhelmed, and fussy. She might even sleep through great surprises in the stroller. Thankfully, I will enjoy just snuggling with my sweetie while the parade strolls by, or the fireworks fly. For times when it is necessary, any of us will be able to hop on the bus and take her to the resort for a mid-day break. When it’s my turn, I will get a little quiet time as well while her parents want to stay in the parks.

Unique resort offerings: We are seriously considering staying at a deluxe resort or villa for this trip. There are so many things we can do with Aleyah at the resort. For instance, watching the animals on the savanna at Animal Kingdom Lodge or playing on the beach at the Contemporary. There are many options for spending time at any Disney resort, no matter the category. This will provide a great opportunity for quality time for my kids to have together and/or Date Night for my son and his wife. They can take advantage of later park hours and have a bit of free time exploring the parks, or go and hang out for a while at Downtown Disney. We can take Aleyah and show her some treasures we think she’ll enjoy. This will be great for everyone!

PhotoPass CD: This is somewhat unrelated but I think this year would be the best time ever for purchasing a PhotoPass CD. Although we typically don’t buy the CD, this year will be a great time to capture wonderful memories of ALL the family together. That way, we can have pictures in all kinds of poses with different family members and keep them all. Realistically, Aleyah will not remember this trip. Thankfully, she will have pictures to look at for the rest of her life when all her family was together celebrating the magic of Disney with her. She will even know that Mickey, Minnie, and all the princesses welcomed her on her first of many visits to “the world.” Soon, the cost of the PhotoPass CD becomes minimal!

So, things in life can totally change our minds about how we see things. Yes, I could take my younger kids and leave my oldest, his wife and my granddaughter at home. But I went on our trip this past December without two of my kids and, to that, I say no thank you! To me, a Disney vacation translates word for word to “magic with your family.” My ideal vacation is having all my kids with me…and now my new precious grand-princess. Disney is the best place in the world for creating priceless, family memories!

It just goes to show how the desire to share Disney with those we love changes everything!

Disneyland Resort Hotels: Which one is for you?

The big question on our trips is which resort hotel we will stay at in Disneyland.  We have to fly over the ocean to go, so we have a long time to save up between trips and love the on-property perks. Now that we’ve stayed at all 3, it’s nice to have an overview of the ones we will stay at for future trips that might help your planning as well.

Paradise Pier Hotel

Disneyland Resort Hotels: Which one is for you?

This hotel wasn’t originally a resort hotel, it is the lowest priced of the 3 resort hotels, yet not value-priced. The decor is California beach style, my boys had lots of fun with the beach ball pillows. My biggest complaint is the elevator situation- there are 3 main elevators for the whole hotel and one glass elevator on a different system.  We did learn the trick- go up to get down, which reminded us of “go left to turn right”. Just one of those opposite-world kind of things.  The 3rd-floor rooftop pool is heated and the kids loved the “California Screamin'” waterslide. The lobby stays pretty busy and they have a few restaurants there as well: PCH Grill (home to Mickey’s Surf’s Up breakfast and the Kitchen Sink dessert) and Surfside Lounge.

Disneyland Hotel

Disneyland Resort Hotels: Which one is for you?

Just coming off a refurbishment, the Disneyland Hotel is the original and my favorite of the resort hotels.  The headboards come alive with lights and music (“A Dream is a Wish”) and I also like that the building names reflect more of the parks: Adventure, Fantasy and Frontier.  The D-ticket pool, E-ticket pool and Monorail pool with waterslides and hot tubs are newly open as well with a kiddie area. There are a few more dining options here: Coffee House, Goofy’s Kitchen (premium character dining), Steakhouse 55, Tagaroa Terrace- Casual Island Dining and Trader Sam’s- Enchanted Tiki Bar. It’s best proximity is to the monorail that goes into Tomorrowland of Disneyland park, which I love after a long day of walking the parks!

Grand Californian Hotel & Spa

Disneyland Resort Hotels: Which one is for you?

This resort hotel reminds me of the Wilderness Lodge- very similar with the same architecture and big open feel.  It is the most deluxe of the 3 and also has the Villas associated with it for DVC members. It has it’s own entrance into the California Adventure park and is right in the middle of Downtown Disney with about the same distance to the monorail as Disneyland Hotel, and it’s proximity to both parks are the best. There are also 3 pool areas to play in at this resort, the Fountain pool, Redwood pool with waterslide and the Mariposa pool with hot tub. Whitewater Snacks is near one of the pools, Hearthstone Lounge is in the main lobby, Storytellers’ Cafe is home to the buffets and Chip and Dale’s Critter breakfast and their signature restaurant is the Napa Rose.  It’s amazing to me how you can find peace and quiet in this resort even with how many guests there are and how it’s right in the middle of all the action. The Mandara Spa is also in this hotel as well as many other services (babysitting for ages 5-12, tours and classes)

All of the resort hotels sleep 5 in a room, usually with 2 Queens and a daybed but the Grand Californian has some rooms with a bunkbed and pull out trundle.

Have you stayed at any of these resorts? What did you think? Let me know in the comment box below.

Tables in Wonderland – What’s It All About?

Tables in Wonderland - What's It All About?
Are you not familiar with Tables in Wonderland? Well, before the Disney Dining Plan came about, this discount card was called the Disney Dining Experience. Tables in Wonderland is a way for Walt Disney World Annual Passholders and Florida residents to save money on their dining.

The card costs $75 for Annual Passholders and $100 for Florida residents that are non-Annual Passholders, but you must be 21 years or older to purchase. Tables in Wonderland gives you 20% off on all food and beverage (including alcohol) purchases at participating restaurants and is good for up to 10 people. Most of the restaurants that are table service are included, and it even includes restaurants that the Disney Dining Plan does not. Many of the restaurants at Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Resort, Victoria and Albert’s, Portobello, Paradiso 37, Bongo’s Cuban Cafe, House of Blues, Fulton’s Crab House, Grand View Tea Room and Bistro de Paris are all included. In addition, many of the lounges at the resorts, Tune-In Lounge at Disney’s Hollywood Studios and over at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, some of the counter service locations like Flame Tree BBQ and Yak and Yeti. Click here for a full list of locations.

Besides the 20% off, when dining at resorts you get the additional perk of complimentary resort valet services. This can save you $12-$15 depending on which resort you are dining at. This alone adds up quickly. After your meal, just show your dining receipt to the Valet Stand with your Tables in Wonderland card and you are good to go… no cost for valeting.

A few things to note. There is an automatic gratuity of 18% added to your bill, no matter the party size. However, you are tipping your server anyways and I’ve never found this to be a problem because 99% of the time I receive great or excellent service at the Disney restaurants. Also, there are times of the year when you can’t use your card such as Mother’s Day, July 4th, Thankgiving Day, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. Also, the card can’t be used on the Fantasmic Dinner Package, Candlelight Processional Package, Food and Wine Festival Packages or special events.

However, just because you decide to get the Tables in Wonderland doesn’t mean you can’t get the Disney Dining Plan too. In fact, you can use the Tables in Wonderland card to cover items that aren’t being taken care of by the Disney Dining Plan, such as alcoholic drinks and appetizers (unless you are on the Deluxe Plan in which appetizers are included).

If you are planning to dine at Victoria and Albert’s, get the card. The reason being is if a couple dines at Victoria and Albert’s and adds on the wine pairing… you have broken even. As a side note, you can’t use this card at the Chef’s Table or in Queen Victoria’s Room.

If you are a Florida resident, visit Walt Disney World often or travel to Orlando for business this card has the potential to save you a lot of money. Between dining at Victoria and Albert’s last year (because of the card) during one of our five trips and my husband’s business trips, the card saved us a lot of money. So I highly recommend picking one up. You’ll find it to be a money saver!

Disney Snacks that are too good to pass up!

Disney Snacks that are too good to pass up!

When I came across this topic, my mouth started watering, and my stomach growled!  Ok, sure, it’s nearly lunchtime, but I think it has more to do with all of the incredible snacks that you can get at Walt Disney World!

If I’m not careful, I could spend all day writing about all of those delicious snacks, so instead of that, I think I’ll focus on my all time favorite snacks, where you can get them, and why I love them so much!

  • Cinnamon Roll — This wonderful, delectable snack is available over at the Main Street Bakery at the Magic Kingdom.  Made fresh all day, these wonderful snacks are an incredible way to start your day, end your day, continue your day, or even save to prepare for your next Disney day!  I’ve had them for breakfast, bought them during the day to take back to the resort for later, and had them as a late night snack on our way out of the park.  All of that gooey deliciousness is absolutely addicting, and if you have never had one, I urge you to try one out the next time you are able.
  • Mickey Premium Ice Cream Bar — This is a winner, winner chicken dinner in my wife’s eyes!  You can find this perfect ice cream bar all over the parks, and is a great snack to have on a hot summer’s day, but make sure you eat it quickly or it will melt!  How can you go wrong with premium vanilla ice cream, shaped in a Mickey Mouse head formation, and coated in delicious chocolate?
  • Popcorn and Diet Coke — Call me dumb, but I love to have an old fashioned snack of Popcorn from the popcorn vendors and a Diet Coke.  There is just something perfect about walking down Main Street, U.S.A., smelling that wonderful popcorn, and getting a snack to settle down with before the next big parade!  I’m picturing it in my mind right now!
  • Jumbo Turkey Leg — This delectable treat is more than just a snack — it’s practically a whole meal!  Smoked turkey (although Bob from MouseChat.net swears it’s made out of emu), terrific flavor, all wrapped up in a foil wrapper.  I love them, and so does my daughter Sophie!

Disney Snacks that are too good to pass up!

  • Last but not least, I love getting beignets over at the Sassagoula Floatworks and Food Factory Food Court at Port Orleans French Quarter!  These wonderful doughy creations, sprinkled with powdered sugar, are the real deal!  Another great breakfast treat!

That concludes my trip to those Disney snacks that are too good to pass up for me and my family.  I know some of you will be shocked that I didn’t make mention of Dole Whips and other tasty delectables — those snacks are really good, but I don’t have cravings over them.

Tell me, though, what is on your list that I didn’t mention here?

Are You A Member Of The Motion Sickness Club?

Are You A Member Of The Motion Sickness Club?

See the above picture! That is my personal nemesis – Mission Space!!! I have a huge problem with motion sickness on almost every single attraction that involves any sort of physical disorientation. How many of these attractions do I avoid? NONE of them. There are lots of things you can do to help but the solutions are not the same for everyone. I can tell you what I have tried and what works the best for me but before you try any of them check with your Doctor even though the “remedies” are mostly Over The Counter (OTC).

My motion sickness is so bad I immediately went for the 800 pound gorilla remedy, the Scopolamine behind the ear patch. My Doctor prescribed the smallest dose available and told me to try it before I went to WDW to make sure I didn’t have any side effects – so much for the 800 pound gorilla. That stuff made me slur words and trip over my own feet!! That’s not the way to spend a vacation!!!

Next came research and lots of reading on the internet. After trying some of the available remedies (but not before discussing them with my Doctor) I settled on the following. Two ginger tablets (available OTC at any drug or health food store) twice a day and the recommended dose of Bonine (also OTC) in the morning took excellent care of the motion sickness throughout the day. Some “experts” will tell you that ginger does not work as a preventative but I know what worked in my case. I also carried extra Bonine and ginger in case it was needed but it never was. That same word of caution – run it by your Doctor before you try any of the recommended motion sickness remedies that you get from any source.

Motion sickness can really interfere with your vacation and keep you from experiencing some of Walt Disney World’s best attractions. There is something much worse than that though – harming your health by taking any “cure” without checking with your Doctor. I hope the important theme about motion sickness is overly obvious – there is relief but don’t try it on your own. Only your Doctor can tell you how these OTC remedies may react in your case. As always, enjoy your motion sickness free visit to Walt Disney World!!

Here is a list of rides I would avoid at Disney World that might make you sick.

Are there any I missed? Let us know in the comment box below.

Review: ‘Good Morning Vietnam’ Hits Blu-Ray on January 17th!

Review: 'Good Morning Vietnam' Hits Blu-Ray on January 17th!GOOD MORNING VIETNAM (1987)
Stars: Robin Williams, Forest Whitaker
Director: Barry Levinson
Studio: Disney/Touchstone
Genre: Comedy, Drama
Rating: R
Length: 121 Min.
Movie Grade: A-
Bonus Features Grade: C+

Good Morning Vietnam was one of the first films to take a usually taboo subject matter and try to make it funny.  I can assure you that during the 1960s and most of the 70s that very few people were laughing about the Vietnam War, as it still remains a touchy subject from our Nation’s history.  However, regardless of the scenarios, one thing has always been certain (no matter how cliché) – Laughter is the best medicine.  Williams’ eccentric DJ character, Adrian Cronauer, is based on a real person who actually did DJ on Armed Forces Radio during the Vietnam War.  When Cronauer decides to “shake things up” while on the air, he quickly becomes an iconic hero to the soldiers that listen to him.  He also infuriates the powers-that-be in a way that is reminiscent to Howard Stern today.  Sure, he is controversial but people tune in.  Good Morning also delivers a terrific and surprising love story when Cronauer agrees to teach the villagers English and ends up falling for one of his Vietnamese students.

While the film is a superb break from reality in a way that refreshes the often horrific thoughts of Vietnam, the special features on the new blu-ray were a little lackluster.  Here is a quick list of the bonus material that will be included on the blu-ray:

-Production Diary (5 mini-features on the film’s inception and making)
-Raw Monologues (Robin Williams’ improvisational DJ-ing)
-Original Trailer and Teaser Trailer

As you can see, the bonus features are not abundant, first of all.  And, secondly, they are a little boring, even for fans of the movie (which I am).  The interviews with the cast and crew, as usual, were a delight. It’s always great to see them speak so candidly of their experiences.  However, Robin Williams was not interviewed.  To me, that placed a huge void since his retrospect I find most alluring.  It was interesting and enlightening to see the interviews with the real-life Adrian Cronauer, and to hear his comparison between the “real thing” and Hollywood’s version.  Along with the wonderful music from the 1960s, that was probably my favorite part of the bonus materials.

Review: ‘Dead Poets Society’ is Coming to Blu-Ray on January 17th!

Review: 'Dead Poets Society' is Coming to Blu-Ray on January 17th!DEAD POETS SOCIETY (1989)
Stars: Robin Williams, Ethan Hawke
Director: Peter Weir
Studio: Disney/Touchstone
Genre: Drama
Rating: PG
Length: 129 Min.
Movie Grade: A+
Bonus Features Grade: B+

Just to be fair, I should tell you that Dead Poets Society just happens to be one of my favorite movies of all-time. In fact, along with perhaps films such as Stand By Me and The Goonies, it may very well be the best coming-of-age film ever. In this one, Robin Williams is once again back in the classroom (man, he plays teachers really well). This time as Professor Keating, an influential Poetry Professor at an all boys academy in the 1950s. The film features many glorious and wonderful personalities, most of which are Keating’s students who eventually become the “Dead Poets Society.” In a nutshell, the film is about friendship and the long journey to find one’s self. Some of us are able to reach a satisfactory outcome in this endeavor, and perhaps even more of us are not able to. Either way, we all have mentors and “teachers” in our lives that we look up to and who ultimately help pave the way for our future successes.

Watching the bonus materials on the recent blu-ray release came with quite a bit of nostalgia. Here is a quick rundown of what the features include:

-Dead Poets, A Look Back (interviews with cast and crew)
-Raw Takes (Outtakes and screen tests)
-Master of Sound: Alan Splet (review of the score/music)
-Cinematography: Master Class (review of the cinematography)
-Original Theatrical Trailer

Basically, all of the bonus materials are interviews with the cast and crew. And, while I thoroughly enjoyed them, Robin Williams was missing. It definitely creates a sense of disappointment for the avid fan playing the “those were the days” angle in his or her head, but unlike Good Morning Vietnam (also being released 1.17.12), Dead Poets comes with an arsenal of unforgettable characters to compliment Williams, as opposed to possibly being shadowed by him. Most of the young actors featured in this film got their “big break” or career starts here, so it was fascinating to hear them retell it in their own words. While the bonus materials on both films is standard quality, the HD 1080 blu-ray re-mastered look of the films was amazing, and it was a welcomed trip down memory lane. On January 17, I definitely recommend that you make room on your movie shelf for this Robin Williams helmed classic.

A Stroll in the Parks with Kingdom Strollers

A Stroll in the Parks with Kingdom Strollers

Investing in a few good, key pieces of travel gear for your Walt Disney World vacation can make a great trip really outstanding. A sturdy, quality walking shoe; the perfect theme park bag to carry water, a camera, and ponchos; and if you’re traveling with kids – a high-quality, maneuverable stroller will smooth out some bumps in your theme park touring experience.

Through the years, I’ve learned that I need some different features on the stroller I use at Walt Disney World than at the local mall; namely, a large sunshade, maneuverability, and ease of pushing are my highly prized Walt Disney World stroller characteristics. Of course, the stroller must be super-clean, recline and fold easily, and have storage. My two strollers at home just don’t cut it.
A Stroll in the Parks with Kingdom Strollers
My umbrella stroller doesn’t have enough storage, the sunshade is inadequate for being out most of the day in the strong Florida sun and it doesn’t feel sturdy enough to stand up to the workout we give the stroller while touring the Disney theme parks.

A Stroll in the Parks with Kingdom Strollers
My sturdy Graco stroller is a champ at home – surviving two kids and more than six years of use. Target has coupons available for strollers. However, maneuverability and easy of pushing are not some of its key attributes.

Enter Kingdom Strollers and the Baby Jogger line of strollers. Kingdom Strollers is an Orlando-based stroller rental company that offers Baby Jogger strollers and prides itself on customer service. Kingdom Strollers will deliver your stroller rental to your Orlando-based resort before you check-in and pick it up at the end of your vacation, making the entire experience a breeze from start to finish.

I don’t use my stroller all that much at home so the Baby Jogger line of strollers offers a little more than I need in everyday life but they are perfection at Walt Disney World; they maneuver like a dream, have a large sunshade, and a double stroller holding two children can be easily pushed with one hand. A stroller rental is clearly the answer for my family.

I was very excited to try Kingdom Strollers for the first time this fall and the experience was top-notch. Imagine my surprise when Matt from Kingdom Strollers responded to my email questions within five minutes every time – you don’t get that kind of service every day and it was a real treat.

A Stroll in the Parks with Kingdom Strollers
After discussing my needs with Matt, we decided to use a City Elite Double Stroller. It was waiting when we arrived, was very clean, and had helpful instructions and a short list of Do’s and Don’ts. Another very pleasant surprise was that a parent console is included free with each rental. This was a feature my husband, who primarily pushed the stroller, appreciated the most. Bottles of water and zip lock bags of dry snacks were within easy reach throughout the day. The Elite also has an adjustable handle which made pushing the stroller very comfortable for my six year-old.

I looked at the Orlando weather forecast a few days before our trip and saw something every vacationer dreads – rain. My brain raced into overdrive; how would this impact our touring and how would I keep the stroller and kids dry? A quick email to Matt inquiring if he had rain covers available put my mind at ease. Matt is a parent and it is evident he knows that a vacation should be worry-free. Kingdom Strollers offers rain covers FREE upon request. This extra bit of service was a godsend – the kids and stroller stayed very dry and we were able to get in more touring than we otherwise would have. Best out all, my husband didn’t have to pull out his mad MacGuyver skills and fashion a rain cover with ponchos and duct tape (which I think he was secretly hoping for).

Last but not least, on our last day at Animal Kingdom we had a freak encounter with a very persistent squirrel (I think) and a peanut butter sandwich which caused some minor damage to our stroller. All week, I was very aware that we had a stroller rental and was very careful to follow all instructions and take good care of it; this wildlife incident stressed me but Matt’s understanding and sense of humor when I contacted him put the relaxation back in my vacation.

My experience with Kingdom Strollers was nothing but positive and I’ll be adding this company as a resource to Beyond the Attractions: A Guide to Walt Disney World with Preschoolers. I’m especially excited that they’ve added cases of water as something you can purchase with your stroller rental. Contact Kingdom Strollers by chat, text, phone, or email and tell them Lisa sent you!

*Disclosure: Kingdom Strollers provided a complimentary, weeklong stroller rental for my last Disney World vacation but it did not influence the views and opinions in this article.
