Rob Marshall Set to Direct “Into the Woods” Disney Adaptation

Rob Marshall Set to Direct "Into the Woods" Disney Adaptation
Johnny Depp and Rob Marshall

Rob Marshall is set to direct a film adaptation of the acclaimed Broadway musical “Into the Woods,” featuring Stephen Sondheim’s original music, for The Walt Disney Studios, to be produced by Marshall and John DeLuca through their production company LUCAMAR Productions. James Lapine, who wrote the stage musical with Stephen Sondheim, will adapt for the screen.

The project is in development under a new multi-year producing deal between Disney and LUCAMAR.

“We are thrilled to be collaborating with Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine on this extraordinary and inspiring work,” said Rob Marshall and John DeLuca. “We are greatly looking forward to continuing our creative and rewarding relationship with Rich Ross, Sean Bailey and the ever supportive team at Disney.”

“Rob Marshall brought his signature flair to ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides’ with tremendous results and he is the perfect person to bring ‘Into the Woods’ to the screen,” Studio Chairman Rich Ross and President of Production Sean Bailey said in a statement. “We’ve loved working with Rob, and this is a great start to our collaboration with LUCAMAR.”

Rob Marshall most recently directed Disney’s “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides,” which earned over $1 billion at the global box office and is the #8 highest grossing film of all time, the #3 film of 2011, and Disney’s biggest overseas release ever. It was the first “Pirates” film to be shot in 3D and the first major production at any studio to be shot in 3D on location. Marshall’s critically acclaimed stage musical adaptation “Chicago” (2002) grossed over $300 million worldwide and was nominated for 13 Academy Awards, winning six including best picture, with Marshall earning a nomination for best director. It also won the Golden Globe for best comedy/musical. His other feature films include “Memoirs of a Geisha” (2005), winner of three Academy Awards, and “Nine” (2009), which was nominated for four Academy Awards and five Golden Globes. Marshall is a four-time Emmy Award winner and a six-time Tony Award nominee, including choreographing and co-directing the 1998 Broadway revival of “Cabaret.”

“Into the Woods” weaves together the story of several of the most beloved fairytales (Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, Rapunzel) into the original story of a Baker and his wife who try to reverse a curse on their family in order to have a child, exploring the consequences of the characters’ wishes and quests and their desire for “happily ever after.” With music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book and direction by James Lapine, “Into the Woods” earned 10 nominations at the 1988 Tony Awards, winning three including best score and best book of a musical. The 2002 Broadway revival won a Tony for best revival of a musical.

Sondheim and Lapine’s other collaborations include 1984’s Tony-winning “Sunday in the Park With George,” which won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, and 1994’s “Passion,” winner of four Tonys including best musical. Sondheim has won eight Tony Awards, more than any other composer, as well as several Grammy Awards and an Academy Award, while Lapine has earned seven Tony nominations for direction and is a three-time winner (out of four nominations) for best book of a musical.

LUCAMAR most recently produced the film adaptation of the Broadway musical “Nine,” starring Daniel Day-Lewis, Nicole Kidman, Penélope Cruz, and Marion Cotillard, which was nominated for four Academy Awards and five Golden Globes. LUCAMAR also produced the star-studded, NBC television event “Tony Bennett: An American Classic,” which won seven Emmy Awards, the most of any nominated show that season. The company is headed by co-presidents Rob Marshall and John DeLuca, with Michael Zimmer serving as director of development.

Wheelchair Friendly Attractions – Star Tours

Wheelchair Friendly Attractions - Star Tours

One of my favorite attractions at Walt Disney World is Star Tours at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. I was really excited to ride it in September because it would be our first flight aboard the Starspeeder 1000 since the attraction’s enhancements. While you do have to transfer from your wheelchair to experience Star Tours, it is one of the easiest attractions to transfer to.

One thing I was a little disappointed about was the fact that wheelchairs don’t go through the regular queue. Yes I realize I am technically skipping some of the line but this queue is awesome and I wanted to experience it. When you enter the building, Cast Members will direct you up a ramp to the left of the standard queue. Luckily, there is a landing at the top where you can check out most of the new queue. Since it isn’t crowded you can spend as much or as little time as you want there. I like hanging out and watching what is happening below.

Wheelchair Friendly Attractions - Star Tours
Once you’ve checked out the queue you follow a hallway to the wheelchair entrance. You’ll come to a rope where you wait for a Cast Member to assist you.  Wait time will vary depending on how busy the ride is. They will ask you how many are in your party and if you need to use the transfer seat. If they don’t ask for some reason make sure you let them know.

The transfer seat is the first seat on the front row so you will board the attraction last. The seat has an arm rest that moves out from the seat making it easier to transfer. I tried it both ways, with the transfer seat and in a regular one where the arm rest doesn’t move. It is definitely easier to use the transfer seat.

One tip I have is to make sure the Cast Member takes your wheelchair back out the entrance and not the side that is the exit. All of the Disney Cast Members at Star Tours were super helpful but some have dealt with wheelchair guests more than others. Taking the wheelchair back out the entrance gets it back to you quicker and also keeps excited guests entering the attraction behind both the wheelchair and the Cast Member.

We loved the new Star Tours and can’t wait to ride it again. The ease of transfer makes it one of the better attractions as far as accessibility goes. Plus its awesome.

COMING TO DISNEY CALIFORNIA ADVENTURE – HIT THE ROAD WITH MATER AND LIGHTNING MCQUEEN!:  Crowning the multi-year expansion project at Disney California Adventure will be the opening of Cars Land, inspired by the Disney•Pixar blockbuster “Cars .”

Cars Land features three immersive family attractions showcasing characters and settings from the movie, including one of the largest and most elaborate attractions ever created for a Disney park: Radiator Springs Racers, a twisting turning, high-speed adventure through Ornament Valley and the town of Radiator Springs. Other Cars Land attractions will include Luigi’s Flying Tires (striking a chord with anyone who remembers the former Flying Saucers in Tomorrowland) and Mater’s Junkyard Jamboree, where guests ride baby tractors as they whip to the left and right in rhythm to the music. Guests in this land also will enjoy new, “Cars”-themed dining and shopping locations such as Flo’s V8 Café, Radiator Springs Curios, Sarge’s Surplus Hut and Ramone’s House of Body Art.

BUENA VISTA STREET WILL WELCOME GUESTS INTO DISNEY CALIFORNIA ADVENTURE: Guests will be welcomed through a new entry and onto Buena Vista Street when the expansion of Disney California Adventure is completed this summer. The transformation will immerse guests in the atmosphere Walt Disney experienced upon first arriving in Los Angeles in the 1920s. Buena Vista Street will feature Red Car Trolleys, inspired by the transportation system that once served Southern California, and the Carthay Circle Theatre, modeled after the site of the 1937 world premiere of “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.” Carthay Circle Theatre will become home to a new lounge and an elegant restaurant, designed to be the premier dining location in Disney California Adventure.

INTO THE RABBIT HOLE AT MAD T PARTY: Beginning summer 2012, guests at Disney California Adventure may fall into the rabbit hole and land in the wild, whimsical world of Mad T Party. Inspired by the world of Tim Burton’s “Alice in Wonderland,” the all-new nighttime family celebration will feature a live band, unique entertainment, fun-filled games and plenty of dancing. Familiar faces from the story will be re-imagined in new ways to immerse guests in a captivating world that’s also filled with signature foods, beverages and merchandise offerings.

ENJOY A ‘PRACTICALLY PERFECT’ BITE AT JOLLY HOLIDAY BAKERY CAFE:  Newly opened on Main Street, U.S.A. in Disneyland, the Jolly Holiday Bakery Café offers a menu of sandwiches, salads, bakery items and espresso beverages. Inspired by the song, “Oh, it’s a Jolly Holiday with Mary…” from “Mary Poppins,” the café has delightful whimsical touches from the film throughout the building and outdoor seating area. Among the delicious new tastes at Jolly Holiday Bakery Café are an Angus roast beef salad, a Caprese sandwich and quiche that will come in a variety of flavors. Fresh bakery items include a Matterhorn macaroon, flourless chocolate cake, fruit tarts and Mickey-shaped desserts.

NEW MAGIC AT DISNEYLAND HOTEL:  The Disneyland Hotel celebrates the completion of a two-year renovation in January, 2012, with significant upgrades and enhancements that have earned it a AAA Four Diamond rating. Guests are enjoying new room décor with modern amenities, an expanded courtyard and three pools, including themed waterslides at the Monorail Pool, a tribute to the early years of Disneyland park. Nostalgic new additions include Tangaroa Terrace, a casual dining restaurant, and Trader Sam’s Enchanted Tiki Bar, which takes its name from the familiar “head salesman” of the Disneyland Jungle Cruise. A magical Disney oasis, the Disneyland Hotel features 969 remodeled rooms, fine dining at Steakhouse 55, plus 120,000 square feet of convention and meeting space.

MAGICAL SHOPPING, DINING AND ENTERTAINMENT IN DOWNTOWN DISNEY:  The Downtown Disney District continues to be a popular destination for Disneyland Resort guests, offering a variety of music and outdoor entertainment throughout the year. This lively, colorful esplanade of innovative restaurants, shops and nightclubs is centrally located between the Disneyland Resort theme parks and hotels. Later this year, guests will enjoy even more space at a newly renovated La Brea Bakery Café. Also featured in the 300,000 square-foot District are more than 30 distinct venues including AMC® Theatres, Catal Restaurant, ESPN® Zone, House of Blues®, Rainforest Café®, Ralph Brennan’s Jazz Kitchen, Tortilla Jo’s, Build-a-Bear Workshop, Naples Ristorante e Pizzeria, and, of course, World of Disney.

FALL 2012 WILL BRING RETURNING DISNEYLAND RESORT HOLIDAY TRADITIONS:  Holidays are always a very special time at Disneyland Resort, and 2012 will be no exception. The Halloween season, beginning in September, will see spooky décor, Disney characters in Halloween costume, the separate-ticket “Mickey’s Halloween Party” and special Halloween attractions. The Christmas season begins in November with holiday fireworks, snow on Main Street, U.S.A., Sleeping Beauty’s Winter Castle, a giant Christmas tree and more.

Sometimes when we visit places like Boma the food can be almost perfect and we have an enjoyable time other times we go things can taste bland and service is horrible.

Saving Money – Unfortunately, Pin Trading can get pretty expensive.   At Walt Disney World, most pins can be purchase for about $10-$15.  Some are more and a few are less.  You can also purchase sets for around $30-$40.  To make Pin Trading easier on the wallet, purchase your pins and lanyard from eBay prior to your trip.  Many bulk sellers list pins for as low as $1 each.  You don’t get to choose the pins you receive, but that just makes Pin Trading more fun.  Now you and your family can hunt the World for your favorite Character and Park pins.  We also purchased our lanyards on eBay for $1.50 each and we didn’t even pay shipping!

Following the Rules – As with everything in life, Pin Trading has a few easy rules to follow.  Only metal Disney pins with the ©Disney mark can be traded.  These pins also need to have a rubber Mickey Mouse back.  However, I have seen several exceptions to that rule at Disney Restaurants and stores.  In that case, you keep your back to use with your new pin and the cast member keeps your old pin minus the back.  Remember that you may only trade with each cast member twice, so make a good trade.  And watch out for those sharp points.  If not traded carefully, those cute pins might just get you.  It is always a good idea to put the back on your pin before handing it over.

Kids Only – In the Pin Trading world there are many cast members that will on trade with children ages 3-12.  At Walt Disney World, these cast members can be see with a green hip or neck lanyard. I have also encountered a few cast members that push Disney Strollers covered in pins.  They also will only trade with children.  If you are a parent of young children, keep your eyes open for these cast members. They usually have really cute pins!

Make Some Memories –   Once you get into Pin Trading you may realize that some pins are rarer than others.  You may feel the need to only trade for the more “valuable” pins, but in my opinion it is better to trade for what you love.  Disney pins are great reminders of what you and/or your children were most interested in that year.   Whether it is Fairies or Pirates, find your favorites and keep them as memories for years to come.

Disney World Quick Tips – Baby Care Centers

Disney World Quick Tips – Baby Care Centers

My wife and I love taking our girls to Disney World when they are young. I know many people want to wait till they get older but I have always lived by the Proverb “Train up a child in the way they should go and when they are old, they will not depart from it.” So we have been taking our girls from 5 months on.

One of the lifesavers for us has been the Baby Care Centers. Baby Care Centers are in all 4 theme parks and each have their own theme inside. They are a perfect place to break away from the park to change and feed your little ones. Not only do they have changing tables, rocking chairs, nursing mom rooms,  and restrooms they have a little mini drug store in there too. You never know when you might need some childrens Tylenol or Motrin.

Here are the locations:

Magic Kingdom
Magic Kingdom theme park features a Baby Care Center next to The Crystal Palace restaurant on Main Street, U.S.A. There is a lot of traffic going towards the Crystal Palace but the restrooms and baby care center are not to busy. It’s next door to the First Aid Center.

Epcot
Epcot theme park features a Baby Care Center inside the Future World Odyssey Center. Basically in between Future World and the World Showcase on the Mexico side. Very quiet and peaceful here.

Disney’s Hollywood Studios
Disney’s Hollywood Studios theme park features a Baby Care Center in the Guest Services Building inside the Main Entrance. This BCC is my least favorite. While its convenient being at Guest Services, the room is the size of a large broom closet. Don’t expect much personal space here. My suggestion would be to get in and get out.

Disney’s Animal Kingdom
Disney’s Animal Kingdom theme park features a Baby Care Center located behind the Creature Comforts store in the Discovery Island area. From the Tree of life go left and keep going. It’s just before the bridge to Tusker House Area.

Please Note:

Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon Water Park does not have a dedicated Baby Care Center, but the restrooms do have baby changing stations. Same thing goes for Disney’s Blizzard Beach Water Park and The Downtown Disney Area.

So if your new or have a new bundle of joy don’t forget to stop by for a quick pit stop. A Happy Baby makes for an enjoyable vacation for everyone!

Disney Confidential – Peter Pan’s Flight Getting New Intereactive Queue

Disney Confidential - Peter Pan's Flight Getting New Intereactive Queue

Here there guys and gals Anonymouse here.

Today’s Gossip comes to us from the Cast Members Mouth. Word is being spread that Peter Pan’s Flight in the Magic Kingdom is scheduled to get an Interactive Queue (Like The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh). So while you are waiting in these really long lines for a mediocre ride you will have something to stare at instead of the wild child waiting in line in front of you.

Construction is expected to start January 16th and end by March 6th, 2012. Disney is not expecting any closures during the construction and I imagine getting around in Fantasyland is going to start getting worse as the closure of Dumbo the Flying Elephant has occurred and Disney gets ready to open the new area.

Personally I think this ride is in need of an overhaul. But I know many of you Disney World purists will probably defend it till your dying day. Don’t get me wrong I love Peter Pan and I am an even bigger fan of Jake & the Neverland Pirates, but I don’t understand waiting in line for hours for a quick 2 minute ride.

If you need me I will be across the street riding It’s a Small World over and over again!

Anywho that is all the Disney Gossip I have right now. For my past Gossip articles be sure to check them out here.

Got any good rumors?  Please email me at [email protected] or on my Facebook Page
