Transportation Issues before the Disney Parks Open

Transportation Issues before the Disney Parks OpenImagine with the Disney Diva  for a second:

You’re excited! You’ve discovered you can actually get in the parks before they “officially” open by making an early advanced dining reservation. You get an 8am reservation for Tusker House and are ecstatic. But then you have a strange revelation… resort buses don’t start running until 1 hour before park opening. How am I going to GET to my reservation since I’m staying on property and I don’t have a car???

I recently had a reader ask a question similar to this and was baffled. I have not encountered this issue myself,  so I set out to find the information and get it to the  faithful Chip & Co readers!

It is correct that buses start running one hour before park opens (this is crazy to me. I don’t know how I have never heard of this before, but I haven’t!!) I called Pop Century‘s front desk and they were unable to find the answer for me.  Then our co-writer, Jodi at Magical Mouse Schoolhouse, called her travel agent friend and got this answer:

“They need to tell the resort that they need the bus for a character meal and they will make it happen. Buses do not run at 7AM. If nobody requests a bus, none will show up. They don’t just run, so guests have to make sure to tell someone at the resort. There is a bus that is specifically dispatched to take resort guests to early reservations. You’re supposed to go by the concierge the night before and inform them if you need it.”

This seems to be the most simple solution, but there are a few more options if you are feeling unsure.

1) Rent a car. This seems to be the worst option to me as its costly, you’ll have to pay for park, you’ll deal with stroller issues on the tram, and you’ll only be doing all that hassle so you can eat an hour before everybody else.

2) Call a taxi in order to make sure you’re there in plenty of time. They recommend checking in 15 minutes a head of time, but it will be less of an issue if you’re the first reservation of the day. I would recommend that you you need to call for a yellow cab directly at (407) 699-9999. Unless you are desperate, use only the yellow cabs (sedans and vans) with meters! There are different brand names on the vehicles (Yellow Cab, Checker, City or Safety), but they all are yellow and all operated by Mears Transportation, which has an official relationship with Disney.

3) Be standing at your bus stop at 8am ready to go and hope that the bus gets you in on time. Remember that you can be up to 30 minutes late for an ADR before they cancel your reservation.

4) Move your reservation back some to give yourself a cushion.

So the bottom line is have a plan if you’re booking a dining reservation at a time that is before parks are scheduled to open in order to avoid quite a stressful situation! Happy Eating!

Disney to Develop Space Sci-Fi Adventure ‘Paladin’

Disney to Develop Space Sci-Fi Adventure 'Paladin'

Walt Disney Pictures is set to develop an original space set sci-fi adventure titled Paladin. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Disney has tapped Max Borenstein an up and coming writer to pen the script. While details about Paladin are being kept under wraps for the time being, the studio has said that it will be a big sci-fi adventure movie. I am particularly interested in this project since it will be an original script and not an adaptation of existing material.

Oops, I Did It Again! Unexpected trip to Disney World

Oops, I Did It Again! Unexpected trip to Disney World

What will it take for a Disney Addict to give up a trip to Walt Disney World in order to visit another destination? My family and I have been visiting WDW for many years now and our annual November trip has become a family tradition. Disney hasn’t only become a big part of our family legacy, it is truly like a second home to all of us. We have on several occasions tried to change our annual family trip to visit a different destination but we always come right back to Disney. So, what will it take for a Disney Addict to give up a trip to Walt Disney World in order to visit another destination? I have absolutely no idea.

My husband and I recently decided we were going to go away for a long weekend, just the two of us. Our youngest child is in his first year of college and all three of our kids are running busily about with not much time for mom and dad, so we decided we could allow ourselves to actually take a vacation without the kids for once. So, we are planning a short trip for just the two of us in April. We sat down to brainstorm where we would go and we decided on San Francisco for several reasons: 1) my husband has never been there before; 2) I have not visited there since I was a teen; 3) there is a lot to see and do there; 4) the weather is great in California in the Spring; and 5) I have wanted to visit The Walt Disney Family Museum since it opened in October, 2009. So, that was it then, we were going to San Francisco.

I made all the reservations for the flight and hotel. I received our confirmations and started my file. Then, I started researching some site seeing options, transportation information, must-try restaurants, etc. A couple mornings later, we were talking about Disney, just like we always do, and I mentioned that the Flower and Garden Festival was getting ready to start. We have never attended Epcot’s Flower and Garden Festival. Oops, I did it again! We both knew what was coming. YES, I was on the phone later that morning cancelling our San Francisco trip and finding out about rates for the Flower and Garden Festival instead. What can you do, some things never change.

Still, this trip to Walt Disney World will be a new experience in many ways. First, we have never been to Walt Disney World just the two of us; we usually have a party of at least 6 people. Second, we have never stayed at the Polynesian Resort, although I have always wanted to stay there, and this trip we will be doing just that. Third, we will get to see all the beautiful Springtime displays at the festival. Finally, we decided to make all but two of our table service ADRs at restaurants where we have never eaten before. Incorporating new things into our trips is something we have done for years. Isn’t it funny that no matter how many times you’ve visited Walt Disney World, there are always new experiences you can include in your trip? That is one of the very best things about Disney.

So, what does it take for a Disney Addict to give up a trip to WDW? I don’t know, but I know one thing; being blessed with a spouse who is as much of a Disney Addict as I am, I guess I will never have to worry about that!

Disney Conservation Camps Encourage Kids to Explore Nature

Disney Conservation Camps Encourage Kids to Explore Nature

Inspiring kids and families to connect with nature, Disney is sponsoring approximately 120 Central Florida children to attend a special Spring Conservation Day Camp at Walt Disney World Resort.

During their week-long school vacations, students will be introduced to animals from five different continents, learn more about their unique behaviors and exotic habitats and make new friends in a fun and interactive environment.

Highlights include daily animal encounters, field trips to Tri-Circle D Ranch, The Seas with Nemo & Friends and  fun at Disney’s Animal Kingdom where participants may experience Kali River Rapids, Kilimanjaro Safaris, TriceraTop Spin and Expedition Everest.

“With a philanthropic focus on children and conservation, we believe this kind of exposure  could spark a life-long passion or even career aspiration for conservation,” said Nancy Gidusko, director of community relations for Walt Disney World Resort. “Through this experience, we hope these day campers will feel empowered to become champions for wildlife and nature and affect change to make the world a better place for all of us.”

The students have been selected from two of the area’s largest neighborhood centers including Engelwood Neighborhood Center in Orlando and Oak Street Park Community Center in Kissimmee.

”The Disney Spring Conservation camp is a wonderful gift that offers our youth an opportunity to do something very different during their school vacations,” said Taryn Rukovitz, regional center manager for Engelwood Neighborhood Center. “By going behind the scenes to learn more about animals and conservation, we hope these students will connect with wildlife and nature in a unique and long-lasting way.”

Disney World Quick Tips – Don’t skip the Advanced Dining Reservations

Disney World Quick Tips – Don’t skip the Advanced Dining Reservations

When your planning your Disney World Vacation  I can’t stress how important it is to make those Advanced Dining Reservations or ADR’s. There is nothing more frustrating that having to wait sometime hours to eat a meal. Countless times I have gone up to a restaurant to check in and heard the hostess tell the people in front of me “It’s going to be over a hour wait”. Ugh!

Disney World has some of the best dining on the planet and there are many Disney Food Junkies like myself out there who snatch up their ADR’s when they come available at 180 days out.

In the past you had to call Disney to make your Advanced Dining Reservations but now a days you can go online and make them yourself. Which I will say is very helpful and a feature I just LOVE! It makes planning a Disney World vacation so easy.

If you don’t make ADR’s even after my persuasive article, Disney released a new feature for finding a place to eat. You can now check for table-service availability at nearby restaurants using the location-based services on your supported Android, Blackberry or iPhone device. For more information check out this post here.

Good Luck and Happy Planning.

Disney World Planning – Extra Magic Hours Strageties

Disney World Planning – Extra Magic Hours Strageties

I have gotten into many debates with people over visiting the parks during Extra Magic Hours. Don’t get me wrong I like the idea of Extra Magic Morning or Evening Hours, but does the HUGE influx of people at that park on that day really account for an hour or so of additional time at the parks?

I know a lot of you when planning what park you will visit on what day specifically pick the parks with Extra Magic Hours. You get to get into the park early, ride some rides before it gets busy, and that is cool don’t get my wrong.

In the beginning I used to as well, but over time I started to notice that by 10 or 11 o’clock that park was SLAMMED! It was insane, so insane that my wife and I would just leave that park and not come back that day. While we didn’t have a little one at the time it was no big deal to hop on Disney Transportation and visit another park.

With the invention of Touring PlansLines” and “Crowd Calendar” I started to notice a trend. Touring Plans would pick the parks with EMH’s as the parks to avoid that day..Hmm I wonder why.

You have to imagine every other guest out there at the Walt Disney World Resorts is thinking the same thing as you, lets visit the parks a little early or stay a little late, but your missing the key point EVERY OTHER GUEST IS THINKING THE SAME THING!

So over the course our visiting the parks we have modified our strategies some, depending on your family situation, and which park we are talking about is what will influence how tackle the dreaded Extra Magic Hours. Let’s take a look.

No Kids Options

So you have no kids, maybe your single, hanging out with friends, newly weds, etc the point is you are very mobile. My suggestion would be to get into the park when it first opens for EMH and by 10-11am you get the heck outta dodge. Find the park that TP’s Crowd Calendar suggests you visit that day and stay there till around dinner time. After dinner head to the park that has the Extra Magic Evening Hours and stay till they kick you out the door.

I remember one time I was at the park till 3am it was AWESOME. All the rides were walk on. No kids were in sights and we may or may not had a few drinks before going..wink wink.

With Kids

If you have little ones that still take a nap this is similar to the No Kids Option but with a twist. This is what we usually end up doing since we have a little one at home with one more on the way.

What we like to do is plan on being at the park for rope drop, with kids you try but aren’t always successful. We usually will skip a big breakfast here and opt for something portable. You will see why in a second.

We go visit all the rides we like the best forgoing any shows, or attractions. Around 11am the little one is starting to get hungry and so should you. Now we use our quick service meal to grab brunch at the park. At this time the park should be getting pretty busy. After we eat we head back to our room for naps.

Once we are up and going we purposely avoid the park with Evening Extra Magic Hours. It is usually much nicer in the parks that doesn’t have EEMH’s. Also I have noticed people are a little more rowdy at the parks after dark, don’t ask me why…

So that is our strategy for now, I am sure as my girls get older we will visit the EMH parks at night but for now after Wishes or Illuminations it is back to the room for bed.

Does Parks matter?

If you were paying attention earlier you would have remembered I mentioned something about parks and extra magic hours. Do which park your visiting that day really matter in staying for EEMH’s? In my research they do.

For example a park like Magic Kingdom EEMH’s are great there are plenty of rides and a fair amount of room. Not to mention Tomorrowland looks the best at night.

Epcot on the other hand is to busy for my tastes at night. The lines for Soarin & Test Track are insane as most people are waiting to go on those rides. I will say walking around the World Showcase at night is very magical and Spaceship Earth is brilliant but not something we have to do every visit.

Disney Hollywood Studios is similar to Epcot and is able to handle the attendance after dark. There is enough stuff to do to curb your late night hunger for rides.

Animal Kingdom doesn’t stay open late like the other parks and that is cool the animals need to unwind from a busy day.

Ok so there you have it this has been my philosophy on Extra Magic Hours. You may or may not agree and that is cool we all have our own opinions and experiences with it. That is the great thing about Walt Disney World there is no right or wrong way to have fun!

What are some of your Extra Magic Hour Strategies? Let me know in the comment section below.

100 Students Selected for Disney’s Dreamers Academy

100 Students Selected for Disney’s Dreamers Academy

Now entering its fifth year, more than 500 high school students will have participated since Disney’s Dreamers Academy opened its doors in 2008.

A celebrity panel of judges led by comedian, author, philanthropist and Disney’s Dreamers Academy Ambassador Steve Harvey reviewed more than 4,700 applications and selected the 100 students for the Class of 2012 Disney’s Dreamers Academy. Judging criteria included exhibiting curiosity, compassion and leadership skills.

During the 2012 Disney’s Dreamers Academy, students will engage in multiple activities, including interacting with a range of industry professionals and experience immersive introductions to various career paths. Disney’s Dreamers Academy students participate in workshops on a variety of subjects, including entertainment, entrepreneurship, the medical field, culinary arts and creative inspiration from Walt Disney Imagineering, the creative gurus behind Disney’s theme parks and attractions.

“We are thrilled to announce this new class of 100 unique Dreamers who will graduate from the Academy with a whole new perspective on their future,” said Tracey Walters-Powell, executive champion of the program for Disney Parks & Resorts. “We received more applications this year than any other and we have selected an amazing class for this historic fifth year anniversary of the Dreamers Academy.”

“I’ve been with Dreamers Academy from day one and each year the program gets stronger as we add new interactive and experiential components for these students, so to hit the five-year mark is quite an accomplishment,” said Steve Harvey, who has served as Ambassador of Disney’s Dreamers Academy since the program started. “Investing and re-investing in these kids each year, you can really see the pay off as they leave the Academy and start to look at their future in a much different and much brighter light.”

Essence Communications President Michelle Ebanks said, “I am not going to divulge any secrets as to what’s being planned for this important fifth anniversary, but if you know anything about Walt Disney World, you know this life-changing event is going to be a truly amazing spectacular for these students and we are proud to be a part of it.”

Proving that Disney’s Dreamers Academy graduates emerge with a new perspective on life and their career paths, two recent graduates from the Class of 2011 Disney’s Dreamers Academy — Diamond Sims of Miami and Princeton Parker of Los Angeles — were invited to share their stories on the popular blog Huffington Post.

“Disney’s Dreamers Academy was a part of my life that I will never ever forget,” said Sims, who is now a freshman at University of Florida. ” I met people who are from the same place as I am. I met people from all types of professions who were willing to provide advice, guidance and encouragement. In only a few days, they helped mold me into the young woman that I am today.”

Parker,17, who just started his first year of communications studies at the University of Southern California, said: “Disney’s Dreamers Academy changed my life not only by enlarging my dreams and understanding, but also by introducing me to more than 100 other young visionaries who possess the same drive, tenacity, vigor and capacity to dream.”

Speakers Resource Group Added to Enhance Dreamers Academy

To increase the depth of experiences shared at Disney’s Dreamers Academy, a formal speakers resource group has been formed that includes accomplished professionals who serve as program ambassadors and who share common goals: inspiring youth to believe in their dreams and giving them tools to jumpstart their dreams into reality. The Disney’s Dreamers Academy Speakers Resource Group champions students in a variety of ways, including participating in the panel of judges who selected the 100 students to attending the flagship event at Walt Disney World Resort to offering insights about the four-day event curriculum. They also collaborate with Disney in extending Disney’s Dreamers Academy program content into relevant community, educational and entertainment platforms.

The 2012 Disney’s Dreamers Academy Speakers Resource Group will include: Mikki Taylor (Editor-at-Large, ESSENCE Magazine); Yolanda Adams (gospel music legend); Terrence J (BET host of 106 and Park); Stephen A. Smith (broadcaster and sports analyst); Dr. Steve Perry (education advocate and CNN commentator); Sonia Jackson-Myles (founder and author, The Sister Accord); Jonathan Sprinkles (award-winning motivational speaker); and Brandi Harvey (Corporate and Community Relations Director, the Steve Harvey World Group) and Karli Harvey (Hair Artesian, U Salon, Atlanta).

Disney’s ‘John Carter’ Movie Review

Disney's 'John Carter' Movie Review

This is Patrick Campbell’s review, rerunning it from a week back.

For over a hundred years, Edgar Rice Burroughs’ eleven book ‘Barsoom’ series, which began with ‘A Princess of Mars’, has been an inspiration for many of our most well-known science fiction films, and has become a small staple of popular culture. Things like ‘Star Wars’, ‘Avatar’, ‘Flash Gordon’, ‘Buck Rogers’ as well as authors like Ray Bradbury and Arthur C. Clarke have all been inspired by Burroughs and his many characters and their adventures on the planet Barsoom, or as we know it as, Mars. But no character from the series has become more popular over time than John Carter, the hero of many of Burroughs’ ‘Barsoom’ novels. Hollywood has spent many years of attempting to bring John Carter and Barsoom to the big screen, and now Academy award-winning director Andrew Stanton (Finding Nemo, Wall-e) and Walt Disney Pictures have worked together to finally give this series it’s due on the big screen. Stanton has managed to bring the incredible world Burroughs envisioned all those years ago to the big screen in a true pulp fiction style adventure that fans and newcomers alike will fall in love with. This is science fiction, as well as action and adventure, at its finest.
