Disney Cruise Line Guests Join Crew Members for a “Walk for Wildlife”

Disney Cruise Line Guests Join Crew Members for a “Walk for Wildlife”

For the first time, Disney Cruise Line guests will have the opportunity to join crew members onboard Disney ships and on Disney’s private island, Castaway Cay, as part of the “Walk for Wildlife” campaign. This year, Disney Cruise Line will donate $5,000 on behalf of guests and crew members to the Jane Goodall Institute (JGI), through the Disney Worldwide Conservation Fund to support JGI’s chimpanzee conservation efforts.

Starting today and throughout next week, the guests and crew of all four Disney ships will have the opportunity to participate in a two-mile “Walk for Wildlife” either while visiting Castaway Cay in the Bahamas or while onboard the ship, completing six laps around the promenade deck.

“We are truly excited to provide this unique opportunity for our guests and crew members to connect with nature while raising money and awareness for a great cause,” said Rena Langley, Vice President of Public Affairs for Disney Cruise Line. “This is the fourth consecutive year our crew members have participated in ‘Walk for Wildlife,’ and we are confident that this year’s event will be even more special because our guests are participating for the first time.”

Nearly $30,000 has been given to environmental charities, as a result of company and personal crew member donations, since the program began three years ago. The walks first began as events exclusively for crew members, allowing them to show their commitment to conservation by making personal donations to environmental causes. Whether onboard our ships or on land, Disney Cruise Line promotes wildlife conservation, works to protect native animal species, shares environmental programs with guests and ports of call worldwide and educates others to inspire environmental action in daily life.

In honor of Earth Month, Disneynature has joined forces with the Jane Goodall Institute for a special “See ‘Chimpanzee,’ Save Chimpanzees” program. For every moviegoer who sees “Chimpanzee” during the film’s opening week (April 20-26), Disneynature will make a donation to the Jane Goodall Institute through DWCF.

Disney Cast Members’ Children Win National Safety Poster Contest

Disney Cast Members’ Children Win National Safety Poster Contest

Two Disney Cast Members are the proud parents of children being honored next month in Washington D.C. as winners of the American Society of Safety Engineers’ (ASSE) annual ‘Safety-on-the-Job’ poster contest.

First-place honors went to Victor Fan, the 13-year-old son of Ming Fan, who works in merchandise at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, while 5-year-old Takoda Paschel, the daughter of Christie Paschel with Walt Disney Imagineering, placed third in her age group.

In addition to the awards ceremony and earning a savings bond, the winners will have their posters featured on billboards in Central Florida when North American Occupational Safety and Health Week kicks off May 6.

“As a company that encourages our Cast Members to talk about safety while at work, we’re thrilled when they bring the conversation home and discuss the importance of safety with their children,” said Trevor Larsen, vice president of worldwide safety for Walt Disney Parks and Resorts. “The annual safety poster contest is a creative way to get kids engaged in thinking about the importance of safety and we were proud to sponsor so many entries from the children of our Cast Members.”

The goal of the contest is to teach children about the importance of safety and help them learn about careers in occupational safety and health. This year’s contest drew a record number of entries, more than 2,300 posters were submitted from the U.S. and 11 other countries, including more than 200 entries from Disney Cast Members’ children and their friends.

Drink Around the World Showcase – Italy Pavilion

Drink Around the World Showcase - Italy Pavilion

If you’re touring Epcot for Chip & Co.’s Drink Around the World Showcase (DAWS) challenge Epcot’s World Showcase offers both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages for adult guests seeking do a global tour of the various tastes of its 11 pavilions. As an adult, I love being able to discover new flavors, both in food and drink, from different countries around the world.  At the Mexico Pavilion, I learned that I liked Margaritas.  But, even better than that, I discovered wine in Italy.

Several years ago, I was strolling the World Showcase with my older sister, when she suggested we stop in the Italy Pavilion to see what types of wine they had.  We happily discovered they offered wine flights, and we sampled 4 different types – 2 whites, and 2 reds.  That’s when I discovered Rosa Regale.  At the time, this wine was not available in the states, so it was a rare and delicious treat that I now enjoy whenever I can!

A sparkling dessert wine, it is neither too sweet nor too bitter.  It’s light, crisp, and tastes amazing with a nice piece of chocolate, or even a cup of Tiramisu from the dessert kiosk.  It costs about the same as any other drink would cost around the World Showcase.  It’s a nice, simple treat that I adore and am now tempted to run to the grocery store to pick up a bottle…

I know there may be more “exciting” drinks in Italy, such as the Italian Margarita, but I have a hard time skipping my Rosa Regale!  We would love to hear your favorite drinks are from Around the World.  Please let us know!

Disney Confidential – Fantasyland Expansion Gossip

Disney Confidential - Fantasyland Expansion Gossip

Here there guys and gals Anonymouse here.

We get tons of questions here on Chip and Co about the Fantasyland Expansion. The biggest one is when is it going to open? While I would love to see it open as soon as possible but unfortunately an Expansion this size is going to take some time. Not to mention we are coming up on the busy season at the parks and Disney is not going to open anything when the park is SLAMMED.

But I wouldn’t be a gossip columnist if I didn’t have some tidbits to share. Here is what I do know..

The Little Mermaid Dark Ride is pretty much finished. Navigating to the ride is another story. If you remember way back when Disney said they were going to open the new area in stages but I think through construction issues and ride placement they are going to do the whole thing at once.

Lets be honest wouldn’t you rather have the whole area opened at one time with a big ceremony and not a little here and a little there? I know Chip suffers from Veruca Salt syndrome and wants it now! I think were just going to have to wait a little longer than expected.

I would venture to say we probably won’t see a grand opening till 2013. You can get a good idea on how the construction is going over here on the WDW Magic site.

I know what you’re gonna say now. But Anonymouse how come they opened Storybook Circus already?? That’s easy it’s because that area already had a way in and out

Overall I think it would be wise for Disney to release some details and not rely on the words of Imagineers. They could do a nice little press conference and give us a full update on the park instead of bit and pieces from Gossip Columns like this one 🙂

Anywho that is all the Disney Gossip I have right now. For my past Gossip articles be sure to check them out here.

Rich Ross, The Disney Studios Chairman, Has Stepped Down

Rich Ross, The Disney Studios Chairman, Has Stepped Down

Changes are a coming to Disney. Rich Ross has just resigned as the Studio head of Walt Disney Studios. This is a big deal, and I’m very curious to see who will be taking over the studio after this. Ross had some great success on the TV front at Disney for a number of years, but he was never able to pull off the same success as the studio level. No successor was named at this time.

Here’s Ross’ final letter to the studio staff:

For the last 15 years, I have had the opportunity to work with incredibly talented people on behalf of the world’s best loved brand. During that time, we’ve told some amazing stories around the world, created successful TV programming, movies, and franchises that generated new opportunities for the company in the process.

I’ve always said our success is created and driven by our people – whom I consider to be the absolute best in the business. But, the best people need to be in the right jobs, in roles they are passionate about, doing work that leverages the full range of their abilities. It’s one of the leadership lessons I’ve learned during my career, and it’s something I’ve been giving a great deal of thought to as I look at the challenges and opportunities ahead.

I believe in this extraordinary Walt Disney Studios team, and I believe in our strong slate of films and our ability to make and market them better than anyone else.  But, I no longer believe the Chairman role is the right professional fit for me.  For that reason, I have made the very difficult decision to step down as Chairman of The Walt Disney Studios, effective today.

It has been my honor to work with such incredible teams – at Disney Channels Worldwide and The Walt Disney Studios and the many other Disney businesses I’ve had the opportunity to collaborate with. I know I leave the Studios in good hands and, even on separate paths, I am confident we are all destined for continued success.

-Rich

Bob Iger also released a statement regarding Ross’ departure:

For more than a decade, Rich Ross’s creative instincts, business acumen and personal integrity have driven results in key businesses for Disney, redefining success in kids and family entertainment and launching  franchises that generate value across our entire company. His vision and leadership opened doors for Disney around the world, making our brand part of daily life for millions of people. I appreciate his countless contributions throughout his entire career at Disney, and expect he will have tremendous success in whatever he chooses to do next.

Avengers Assemble On Three Collectible Covers of D23 Magazine’s All-new Summer Issue

Avengers Assemble On Three Collectible Covers of D23 Magazine’s All-new Summer Issue

Marvel’s The Avengers is so big, Disney twenty-three magazine needs not one, not two, but three eye-popping collectible covers to do it justice … and that’s what D23: The Official Disney Fan Club has planned for the summer issue, which is available nationwide on May 1.

Coinciding with the worldwide theatrical release of Marvel’s The Avengers, the summer issue of Disney twenty-three features a 10-page story on the creation of the biggest superhero film ever produced. Author and Disney Imagineer Jason Surrell spoke with the film’s acclaimed writer-director Joss Whedon, as well as stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Tom Hiddleston and Clark Gregg, and producer Kevin Feige to get the behind-the-scenes details on the explosive film, from the complexities of bringing many of the world’s most famous heroes together to nights out dancing in downtown Albuquerque.

Each of the magazine’s three front and back covers feature different characters:

  • Iron Man and Nick Fury on front; Hulk and Captain America on back
  • Thor and Black Widow on front; Iron Man and Hawkeye on back
  • Captain America on front; Hulk and Hawkeye on back

Marvel’s The Avengers is a groundbreaking film, so we had to do something equally exceptional with our flagship magazine that would thrill both Disney and Marvel fans alike,” says Steven Clark, head of D23: The Official Disney Fan Club. Along with the new issue, D23 Gold Members will receive a special member-only gift: one of seven collectible patches featuring the insignias of each Avenger

Marvel’s The Avengers is only part of what’s in store in the summer issue of Disney twenty-three, which explores the most exciting new developments throughout Disney – while offering new insight into fan favorites. Among the articles in the summer issue:

  • Brave New World Readers will travel to Pixar Animation Studios and meet the team bringing to life the mystical world of ancient Scotland in Pixar’s 13th animated feature, Brave;
  • A World of Fantasy: Climb aboard the newest ship in the Disney Cruise Line fleet and explore what makes the Disney Fantasy unlike any other vessel to set sail;
  • To Annette, With Love: An in-depth interview with Glen Holt, the devoted husband of everyone’s favorite Mouseketeer, Annette Funicello;
  • Bon Anniversaire, Disneyland Paris: As Disney’s only European theme park turns 20, Disney twenty-three looks back at its creation and ahead to its magical future;
  • The World Will Know and Written in the Stars: Two articles that take closer looks at Disney’s latest, critically acclaimed Broadway productions: Newsies and Peter and the Starcatcher.
  • He Wrote the Songs: A touching remembrance of legendary Disney songwriter Robert B. Sherman;

The summer issue of Disney twenty-three also offers an exclusive interview with Newsies film director Kenny Ortega; a celebration of the history of the Disney Store, which first opened its doors 25 years ago; photos from the latest D23 events across the country – and rarely seen photos from the Walt Disney Archives in the magazine’s popular PHOTOfiles section.

Disney twenty-three is delivered directly to the doorstep of all D23 Gold Members, along with a special gift.  Disney twenty-three magazine is also available at retail locations across the country for $15.95, and can also be purchased online at DisneyStore.com and throughout the Disneyland® and Walt Disney World® Resorts.

D23: The Official Disney Fan Club celebrates the remarkable past, present and future of Disney, taking its name from 1923, the year Walt Disney founded his world-famous company. Disney Releases Wreck-It Ralph Poster

Disney Releases Wreck-It Ralph Poster

Disney has released the first poster for Wreck-It Ralph via MSN. Ralph (John C. Reilly) is an 8-bit video game villain who is tired of losing to his in game nemesis Fix-It Felix (Jack McBrayer). After deciding he no longer wants to be the bad guy, Ralph breaks out of his game to roam around the other games in the arcade to prove he can be the good guy too.

As a fan of the original Nintendo (yes I am old) I love the poster and I am really excited about the movie. Wreck-It Ralph hits theaters November 2, 2012.
