How to Tour the Parks – Visiting the Magic Kingdom in a Wheelchair Part 2

How to Tour the Parks - Visiting the Magic Kingdom in a Wheelchair Part 2

Today we are looking at the attractions in Fantasyland and Tomorrowland. If you missed part one you can find it here for information on Adventureland, Frontierland, and Liberty Square.

Fantasyland

it’s a small world
it’s a small world has a different entrance for wheelchair users. It is located next to the exit of the attraction. If you would like to stay in your wheelchair the attraction has accessible boats. You may have to wait for one of them to cycle through so your wait time will vary. Once the boat arrives you just roll on and then down to the front. There are seats on the side for members of your party. Cast Members will place a rubber bumper behind your tires to keep your wheelchair in place but make sure you have your brakes on as well.

Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh
This attraction has a special ride vehicle that allows you to stay in your wheelchair. Once you go through the queue just let the Cast Members that you need to stay in your wheelchair. You may have to wait a little longer for the ride vehicle to cycle through but we didn’t have to wait very long. There is only room for your wheelchair and one other person so if you are with a bigger party they will have to ride in a different hunny pot.

Mickey’s PhilharMagic
This attraction is in a theater and has wheelchair seating in the back. Cast Members will point you towards a door to the far right of the waiting area that leads to the wheelchair seating.

The following attractions you must be able to transfer from your wheelchair to experience. I haven’t visited them in quite some time because the transition would just be too difficult for me. If you have an experience you would like to share about these attractions be sure to leave a comment below.
Mad Tea Party
Peter Pan’s Flight
Prince Charming’s Regal Carousel
Snow White’s Scary Adventures

Tomorrowland

Astro Orbiter
This is one of the few attractions at Walt Disney World that I haven’t experienced so I can’t really give any advice. The guidebook shows that you have to transfer from your wheelchair to ride. If you have any questions just ask a Cast Member.

Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin
This is a very wheelchair friendly attraction. Once you go through the queue a Cast Member will ask you if you want to transfer or stay in your chair. If you are unable to walk a few steps it is easiest to stay in your wheelchair and use the wheelchair access vehicle. Once the access vehicle comes around the Cast Members will either slow down or stop the attraction for a few moments. There is a ramp on the vehicle that folds down and allows you to roll in easily. Make sure your brakes are on because there isn’t anything else that will keep you from moving in your wheelchair once the attraction starts.

How to Tour the Parks - Visiting the Magic Kingdom in a Wheelchair Part 2

Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress
This is one of my favorites. There is wheelchair seating in the front of the attraction. I prefer to sit toward the middle. Again, make sure your brakes are locked since it is a moving theater.

How to Tour the Parks - Visiting the Magic Kingdom in a Wheelchair Part 2

Monsters, Inc. Laugh Floor
This is another attraction that takes place in a theater type setting. Wheelchair seating is located in the front. And don’t think that the Monsters in the show won’t call on you. I learned that lesson on a recent trip.

Stitch’s Great Escape!
This attraction has two parts. First you go through orientation. Cast Members will point you toward the middle door so you will be in the second row for the pre-show. There is a wheelchair viewing area there. After that you are taken into the holding area. There are seats in the back that allow you to stay in your wheelchair. Once the attraction is over a Cast Member will take you back through the entrance to a different exit.

Tomorrowland Speedway
This is another attraction that you have to transfer from your chair to experience. I haven’t ridden in years so I can’t remember how low the cars are. If you have any questions I am sure the Cast Members there can help you.

Tomorrowland Transit Authority PeopleMover
This was always one of my favorite attractions. Unfortunately, if you are unable to walk a few steps there really isn’t an easy way to board.

Space Mountain
This is another attraction I haven’t ridden in a few years. The ride vehicles sit pretty low so it would be difficult for me to get in and out. But if you think you can transfer easily either obtain a FASTPASS and then enter through the the FASTPASS queue. If there aren’t any FASTPASSES available then you enter to the right.

Next time I will be discussing the wheelchair accessibility of the attractions at Epcot so stay tuned to Chip and Company!

JP’s Merchandise Review: The Return of the Orange Bird

JP’s Merchandise Review: The Return of the Orange Bird

Like many people in my age group when Disney rolled out the merchandise for the 40th Anniversary of the Walt Disney World Resort there was one character that I could not figure out who it was. He was a bird with a head that looked like an orange. I later found out that he was the Orange Bird and was told that he was in the Magic Kingdom since day one and was slowly phased out of the spot light. I had two thoughts when I heard this. The first was how creative his name was (not very). The second was that I secretly hoped that the Orange Bird would make a come back after the 40th was over since he looked really cool.
Thankfully Disney Corporate heard my secret prayer and decided to bring him back to his original home at the Sunshine Tree Terrace with new merchandise to go with his return. Several of it is only for a limited run, which by default automatically makes it cool.

Two of the items for sale are T-shirts that look wonderful. The green shirt has a simple and very cool looking design. The retro D with “The Orange Bird” inside and retro Walt Disney World logo look great and show when this character is from. The Beige shirt is not as impressive but still cool. It has the Orange Bird’s head on the front which makes me think that he was staring in a Disney cartoon. Not a bad shirt by any means, but not as good as the green shirt. Since these shirts are also limited run, you should buy them.

The Orange Bird also has a pin that guests can buy and has been for sale for quite sometime now. It is a “Green” category pin, so $7.41 is enough for purchase. It is a decent size and has the cute little bird wearing a pair of Mickey Mouse ears. This is a good addition to anyone who is looking to have all the Orange Bird pins (All 8 or them).
My favorite piece of Orange Bird merchandise is the mouse ears they will start selling in the summer. I’m a big fan of all the ear hats, especially the character hats released a few months ago (Figment hat for-the-win). But this pair overtakes my opinion as the best pair of mouse ears you can currently buy. It has the twin leafs at the top and has his big eyes for all to see. I will definitely be buying this when it comes out. Hopefully this smells like oranges for a novelty factor. Though I don’t think Disney wants bees following their guests, so this will be a dream Disney won’t listen to.

Overall, the Orange Bird has made a triumphant return to the Magic Kingdom and has the merchandise and Disney higher-ups to back it up. It is good to see them bring back some of the older characters and reintroduce them to the general audience. Now how about some more Oswald stuff?

Starbucks is coming to Walt Disney World

Starbucks is coming to Walt Disney World

In June, the first of six planned Starbucks locations is scheduled to open at Disney California Adventure park. And more locations are planned at Disneyland park and Walt Disney World Resort (Magic Kingdom Park, Epcot, Disney’s Hollywood Studios and Disney’s Animal Kingdom).

The Starbucks locations inside the parks will be designed to fit the theme of their surroundings. At Disney California Adventure park, Starbucks will be located in the Fiddler, Fifer and Practical Café on Buena Vista Street, a place that transports guests to 1920s Los Angeles, when Walt Disney arrived in California and a cup of coffee was the perfect way to jump start a busy day. The store’s location plays off the Spanish/Mexican architecture of the period, and baristas will wear 1920s-inspired attire.

The café will serve Starbucks items, including coffee and espresso beverages, Frappuccino® blended beverages, and signature breakfast sandwiches and pastries. Guests also will have their choice of Disney favorites, including signature sandwiches and other items, as well as delicious desserts and sweet treats.

I guess my old list of places to Get Your Coffee Fix will need updating.

App Review: “Avengers Origins: Hulk” by Disney Worldwide Publishing

App Review: "Avengers Origins: Hulk" by Disney Worldwide Publishing

The folks over at Disney Worldwide Publishing have been at it again, releasing the interactive book “Avengers Origins: Hulk” for iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch!  Just like Assemble!, which I reviewed recently, Hulk is available at the iTunes App Store, the book costs a very reasonable $1.99.

The book is narrated by Stan “The Man” Lee, so for all of you comic book enthusiasts, you will love to know that!  However, there are different levels for the book, everything from “Read to me” mode, “Auto-turn the pages” mode — which will take away the interactions you can have with the book, and “Young Reader Mode” for those readers that are just starting out.

Hulk tells the story of how the Incredible Hulk came into being.  For a person that doesn’t read many comic books anymore, the story told me about the young Bruce Banner, how his experiences as a kid would help him later on in life.

App Review: "Avengers Origins: Hulk" by Disney Worldwide Publishing

App Review: "Avengers Origins: Hulk" by Disney Worldwide Publishing

As the story progresses, we learn that Bruce Banner’s favorite subject was science, and that he became an Army Scientist studying Gamma Rays.  I think I knew this when the Incredible Hulk was on TV when I was a kid, but that was several years ago, and I had forgotten all of that.

Then, when Banner was conducting a dangerous experiment, he saw something that would shake him to his core — someone driving right in the test zone!

App Review: "Avengers Origins: Hulk" by Disney Worldwide Publishing

Risking his own life, Bruce took action, and was able to push the boy to safety, but he wasn’t as lucky.

I’m willing to bet that most everyone knows the end result of the story, but if you don’t, why don’t you get the app and find out?  The apps by Disney Worldwide Publishing are really well done, and even if you know the end, you’ll like the interactions that you have integrated into the story, such as this one, where you have to throw the car!

Disney’s Art of Animation Resort Puts Guests in the Middle of the Story with Enchanting Tales

Disney’s Art of Animation Resort Puts Guests in the Middle of the Story with Enchanting Tales

To kick off the summer vacation season, Walt Disney World Resort will open the doors to its newest resort hotel with Disney’s Art of Animation Resort, a value property consisting primarily of family suites that immerse guests into the magical worlds of classic Disney and Disney•Pixar films.

Opening in phases, each of the four wings celebrates rich storytelling, spirited characters and playfulness with colorful icons and whimsical theming inspired by each beloved film depicted.  Three family suite wings will showcase Finding Nemo, Cars and The Lion King, with elaborate storytelling both inside and out. Standard guest rooms make up The Little Mermaid wing, the final phase to open.

The three-story resort will immediately put guests into the worlds of favorite Disney characters and animated films beginning at check-in as pixilated patterns and wavy ribbons of color decorate the resort’s exterior. Pencil drawings of Ariel, Lightning McQueen, Nemo and Simba adorn the entryway, and a cleverly created chandelier composed of animation storyboards enhances the lively and modern lobby.

Giant sketchbooks filled with favorite characters seem to come to life as they pave the way to each storyline revealed.

Scenic settings, icons—including a brightly-colored coral landscape, a 35-foot-tall model of King Triton, a towering Mufasa and more—immerse guests into the playful world of animation.

At the Cars wing, a freshly paved road leads to the Cozy Cone Motel complete with a Cozy Cone pool and cone-shaped cabanas. It’s a journey through an African landscape in The Lion King complete with an elephant graveyard play area that invites youngsters to seek hakuna matata time. Treasures from the human world fill Ariel’s grotto in an under the sea kingdom in Little Mermaid courtyard.

From linens and carpeting to fixtures and furniture, all details of the guestroom tie to the storyline. In Finding Nemo, there’s coral-shaped chairs and bubble ceiling lights; Zazu takes center stage on the headboards in The Lion King, while Pumbaa and Timon decorate the shower curtain.

Kids of all ages can make a splash at the “Big Blue” pool, the largest resort swimming pool at Walt Disney World Resort measuring 11,859 square feet. Guests enter scenes from the animated world and can explore the colorful reef with a giant-sized Mr. Ray whose wings span 27 feet, pose for a picture with Crush or frolic with Squirt in the Righteous Reef, a children’s play area. An arcade and two additional pools round out the fun.

The whimsical property, situated adjacent to Disney’s Pop Century Resort, will open in phases beginning May 31, 2012 with rates from $248 per night. The 1,120 family suites include two bathrooms, a kitchenette and three separate sleeping areas that can sleep up to six.

The Cars wing will now open June 18 instead of earlier-announced July 31; The Lion King will open August 10 instead of September 30. Value rooms at The Little Mermaid wing open on September 15 instead of at the end of this year.

The 864 conventional rooms in the Little Mermaid wing sleep up to four. Rates as low as $94 include complimentary transportation, Extra Magic Hours and other benefits available to a Disney Resort guest.

Disney Cruise Line to Auto Apply Gratuities

Disney Cruise Line to Auto Apply Gratuities

“How much do I tip” is one of the most common questions when it comes to cruising. Disney Cruise Line makes it easy and gives you guidelines for who and how to tip.

There is a nice easy little form that you fill out and turn in, or you can pre-pay your gratuities-in which case you’ll receive vouchers the last night of your cruise to put in the envelopes and distribute accordingly.

Already in effect on the Disney Magic, the remaining Disney ships will be instituting the auto-application gratuity as follows:

  • Disney Dream-To be determined
  • Disney Wonder-April 22, 2012
  • Disney Fantasy-April 21, 2012

The automatic gratuities will be applied to your stateroom account on embarkation day. The gratuity policy will apply to the Head Server, Server, Assistant Server and Stateroom Host/Hostess. You can also pre-pay your gratuities at the time of booking or before final payment. If you choose not to pre-pay your gratuities you’ll receive a letter at check-in explaining the new auto-application gratuity policy. Guests will have the option to modify or add additional gratuity amounts or pay in cash, just stop by the guest services desk to make arrangements.

This gratuity process was tested on the Disney Magic and received very positive guest feedback, many saw it as one less thing to worry about. What do you think about this policy?

Dumbo Flies Again as First Phases of the New Fantasyland Stir to Life

Dumbo Flies Again as First Phases of the New Fantasyland Stir to Life

New fun is in store with the first stirrings to life of the new Fantasyland, representing the largest expansion in Magic Kingdom history. When the multiyear project is complete, Fantasyland will nearly double in size and immerse guests in Disney stories as never before. Fantasyland will deliver a new home for Ariel, new ways to interact with favorite Disney princesses, offer an exciting new family coaster, a double dose of Dumbo, “be our guest” at the Beast’s Castle and much more.

Greeting guests now will be some of the first attractions to come on line.

  • Dumbo the Flying Elephant. A real Fantasyland icon, everybody’s favorite pachyderm is aloft again in Fantasyland, bringing the fun of the midway to Storybook Circus. This first-ever Dumbo flying clockwise will be joined later this year by a second Dumbo, flying counterclockwise, in an expanded attraction that doubles the fun for Fantasyland guests.
  • Next door in Storybook Circus, the classic Barnstormer now featuring Goofy as the Great Goofini takes families on a rollicking coaster “flight” above the circus fun.
  • Fantasyland Train Station follows a “country cottage” style with a thatched roof, and wood beam and plaster walls. It makes Fantasyland once again a stop for the nostalgic Walt Disney World Railroad, encircling the Magic Kingdom on 20-minute journeys.

What Month Should You Travel To Walt Disney World?

Walt Disney World Transportation

When choosing the time of year your family should travel to Walt Disney World, there are four things to consider: crowds, price, weather and special events.

1. CROWDS… Different times of the year bring different size crowds to WDW. Typically, when school is in session, the crowds are lighter. When your kids are out of school, chances are so are other kids! Holidays are always crowded along with summer break and spring break.

2. PRICE… Price plays a very important part in making the decision of when to travel to Walt Disney World for several families. While ticket prices stay the same, room rates on property will vary depending on the season. The seasons are typically based on crowd levels.

3. WEATHER… Temperature averages and rainfall may also play a part into when to take your trip.  But, always plan on any type of weather while in Orlando!
