Disney hopes to automate Character Meet and Greets

Disney hopes to automate Character Meet and Greets

I for one love the Disney Photo Pass Photographers. They are very helpful, creative, and most have great personalities that really love what they do. When I read this article today it felt very unpersonal and cold which to me is not what the Disney Magic is about.

According to Stitch Kingdom and several sources online Disney is working on a automated imaging system that will track guests via fully automated cameras and gps systems. The computer system will center, crop, edit photos and video and send those images to your cell phone or other personal devices all without a single person having to do a thing.

While meeting your favorite characters for the first time is very magical not to mention having photos and videos from various angles is cool I think we lose some of that magic when we take that person to person interaction we get from photographers and other attendants. I am fine with the editing and sending of photos and video but would hate to see the whole system be fully automated.

You can read up on the full report here.

What do you think about this new Patent? Will it take the magic out of the hands out of the Cast Members or is this something we need to upgrade?

Should You Take Your Children Out of School for a Disney Vacation?

Should You Take Your Children Out of School for a Disney Vacation?

If you have school-age children, at some point you have probably considered taking them out of school to visit Walt Disney World. It can be a tough decision, and in my experience at least, the right answer was different at different stages of our daughter’s life.

The “take them out of school” discussion is one that I personally struggled with. The first time we dealt with this dilemma was when our daughter was in middle school, and we made the decision to plan a 7 day Land/Sea vacation with Disney Cruise Line in October. Her school system had 2 days off during this one week, so I figured that she was only missing 3 days of school. We notified all her teachers in advance, she got her work from most of them before she left, and so she was able to do a good bit of it on the way down to Florida and back. No real problems.

I can’t say as much for the next time this came up, because by then she was a sophomore in high school…which is an entirely different ball game. I was going to be at Disney for a business conference, so we decided that we would all go. It was only for 3 days, in early December. She was an A student, so we figured that it would work out fine, and that she would have no problems.

We were wrong. In high school, the work load is a great deal more, and things move rapidly. Despite her best efforts to keep up with her homework while away, it was hard: who really wants to do calculus problems instead of seeing Wishes? And coming just a few weeks before Christmas break, every teacher was cramming to get things accomplished prior to the break. She was loaded with work before she left, and had even more when we returned.

She was able to eventually catch up, and her grades did not ultimately suffer…..but it was hard. We decided not to do that again. Our trips, from that point on, were during school breaks, and if that meant smaller 3-4 day trips, well so-be-it.

If you have younger children though, you may have more flexibility in scheduling your vacation. Many folks do take their children out of school to go to Disney World on a regular basis. If you are considering doing this, here are a few tips that I would offer that may help:

  1. Be sure to discuss your trip with your child’s teacher well in advance. Some teachers can give your child their homework prior to your vacation, so that he/she can complete it before you leave….or at least have it to work on during the trip there and back. It will really help when they return, if they are relatively caught up with their classmates.
  2. Depending on the age/grade of your child, see if there are “Disney-related” assignments that your child could do instead of regular work. Many teachers are very happy to encourage creative reporting on some of the educational aspects of Disney World: and there are a lot of great ways to do this! In fact, I think nearly everything at Disney World is educational in some aspect, so see if your child can take advantage of this by keeping a journal, doing a report or preparing a slideshow.
  3. I do think it is important to consider your child, and any challenges they face in school before you decide to do this. A vacation in the middle of the school year can be a real disruption to the routine of many children: how will your child handle this? Does he/she struggle for average grades? Some children can easily miss a few days of school without missing a beat, while others may be challenged for weeks afterwards trying to catch up. Again, there is no *one* answer here, it really depends on your own family situation.

So what about you? Have you taken your children out of school for a Disney vacation? What tips do you have to make it successful? And….would you do it again?

Marvel’s ‘The Avengers’ Review

Marvel's 'The Avengers' Review

“And there came a day, a day unlike any other, when Earth’s mightiest heroes and heroines found themselves united against a common threat. On that day, the Avengers were born—to fight the foes no single super hero could withstand!” Those were the opening words of the first ever Avengers comic book that debuted in 1963. Then in 2008, Marvel placed the first building block of their Marvel cinematic universe in an after credits stinger in Iron Man. Featuring Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, he confronts Tony Stark in his house to talk to him about The Avengers initiative. Marvel had set their goals high, and after five movies and four years of work later, we’ve finally arrived at the film that everything was building to: The Avengers. And let me say, the wait has been well worth it! Marvel Studios, with the help of Joss Whedon, has given us not only what could be the greatest comic book movie yet, but one of the best action/adventure movies in recent memory.

After being cast out of Asgard, Loki (Tom Hiddleston) has become increasingly deranged, becoming obsessed with obtaining power and becoming King again. Feeling wronged for losing his throne, he comes up with a new plan, one that sees him becoming ruler of Earth. Enlisting the help of an alien army, Loki sets out to take his new kingdom. But Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) has other plans. Scared that a day would come when only one hero wouldn’t be enough to save the world, he has devised  a plan that would take a group of Earth’s mightiest heroes and bring them together as one team. Against the orders of his superiors, he calls upon Captain America (Chris Evans), Iron Man (Robert Downey, Jr.), and Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) to aid him on his mission. Thor (Chris Hemsworth), learning of his brothers scheme, is quickly sent back to our world to stop him, coming in direct conflict with the team. Egos and belief collide between the team, but they must learn to work together as the world is on the brink of war, or let it fall into the hands of Loki.

That is a very basic synopsis of the movie, because for all intents and purposes, I’m going to try and discuss this movie while staying mostly spoiler free. This may not be an easy feat, but I can try. When Marvel first started working towards making an Avengers movie, I was hesitant to believe it would happen. I mean, this is a massive crossover movie, with so many characters and variables. How do you make that happen? This was one of my favorite comic book series growing up, and one I still regularly read, so of course my expectations were incredibly high. But Marvel quickly found a way to silence any doubt I had in the movie by hiring none other than Joss Whedon to write and direct the film. Whedon is best known for his television work on things like Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, and my personal favorite, Firefly. These shows all had great ensemble casts, and Whedon always found a way to balance every character among the action, and every character got to shine. So hiring him to do The Avengers was one of the best things Marvel could have done. And let me just say, he delivered in spades.

There is not a moment in this movie where I felt that a character was ever under utilized or didn’t get to stand out. Having all these characters in a movie like this is a tough balancing act, especially one with this much action, but it works. There is enough smaller character moments and scenes with the characters, it never seems to take a backseat to the action. The dialogue between the characters is really strong as well. Whedon has always been great at that, and it just soars here. He really understands the feelings that these characters have for each other, and he really delves into that. Especially between Stark and Rogers, where we see there is always going to be a rift on how they work and view each other. This is something that comic fans know all too well, and leads to the inevitable Civil War story line.

Honestly, this movie wouldn’t work nearly as well if it wasn’t for the amazing cast that they’ve assembled. Downey, Jr., Evans, and Hemsworth have all proven how great they are as Iron Man, Captain America, and Thor already in their standalone movies, and they just mesh so well together here that you can tell that they loved working together. They’re just so good together, and they really bring the dynamics of these characters to life. I really liked Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury this time around, because he’s finally playing less of the caricature of himself and really become Nick Fury. He really shows he’s the man with the power here, and one who holds the world’s safety on his shoulders. It’s weighing on him, but he knows it’s his job and he’ll see it through. And of course, Clark Gregg steals every scene he is in as Agent Phil Coulson, one of the best Marvel players in this whole cinematic universe. He shares some great scenes with Chris Evans, where Coulson’s man crush on Steve Rogers begins to show. It’s really funny, and sort of nice too. Because it shows, even on the brink of war, these characters are still human, and they have lives outside of this. It’s a very humanizing moment for them, and we can relate to it. Cobie Smulders is also very good in her first Marvel film as Agent Maria Hill. She’s very good at playing the by the books agent, who really doesn’t agree with Fury’s idea of this Avengers team. She goes along with it, but she doesn’t like it, and questions him time and again. She really holds her own against Jackson in their scenes together, and I can absolutely see why she was chosen for the part.

I really liked Renner as Hawkeye and Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow as well. They don’t seem nearly as out of place as many may fear, and they’re given some great material to work with. And the relationship between the two is very poignant, and really makes them relatable. They’re both partners who would always do whatever it took to help the other. But the biggest two standouts for me in this were, once again, Tom Hiddleston as Loki, and Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner. Hiddleston once again just tears up the screen as Loki, and this time he’s more unhinged than he was before. He really plays the broken man who has nothing left to lose very well, and he takes it to a whole new level this time. He is crazed for power, and he’ll stop and nothing to become King, no matter what the cost. He is also shares scenes with every character in the movie at one point or another, really trying to play the mischievous and psychological side of Loki that isn’t played on much. It’s great. But Ruffalo is quite the standout as Bruce Banner, the third actor to get a shot of it on the big screen. Fans who worried that he wouldn’t pull it off and that he couldn’t replace Norton, cast all those fears aside. Ruffalo IS Bruce Banner. He owns the character in a way that no one has before since Bill Bixby. He was absolutely the right guy for the job, and he brings a very new take on the character to the big screen. Living with this side of himself that he just wants to hide, he has locked himself away from the world, going to the farthest reaches hoping he can run away from it. He’s very damaged, but he just wants to help people, and so he does. I hope and pray that Marvel and Feige decide to do a new Hulk film with Ruffalo in the lead, because this is the best version of not only Bruce on screen, but of Hulk as well. This is the Hulk we’ve been waiting to see. One that just oozes the incredible strength and power, and that could level entire buildings with one leap or punch. He’s also much smarter this time around, meaning Hulk is becoming more aware, which is a great angle to play. This is, in my opinion, the best Hulk so far, and they’ve really done him justice this time around.

Speaking of the action side of the movie, it’s completely chock full of it, and it’s great! Seriously, Whedon and company went all out, especially over the last half hour of the movie. I know that some feel that the Marvel action movies don’t usually have great third act battles, this is the movie you’ve been waiting for. It’s just so massive, and you’re going to be blown away by the sheer scale of it. Seeing these characters fighting together was so cool, and my inner geek was freaking out over it. But the last half hour aren’t the only action scenes. There is so much action throughout, you’ll be on the edge of your seat for a lot of it. This is the best action movie I’ve seen in years.

One thing I really loved was that Whedon didn’t skip on his sense of humor. The movie is genuinely funny in all the right places without feeling out of place or bogged down by it. Whedon has always had a great sense of humor, and his shows and comics were always full of it. It really worked well in this movies favor. I don’t want to say too much, because I feel like the best comical moments will work better not knowing about them ahead of time. I’m surprised how none of it has really made itself into the trailer, but that may be because they want to make sure a lot of the stuff stays a surprise. And that’s not just the humor. There is so much in the movie that you would have no idea was in the movie because it isn’t in the trailer. That’s huge for a film of this size, and I’m glad to report that there are plenty of fun and surprises in the movie that you haven’t seen, or that have even been hinted at by the trailers. That’s very important to me, and it was great to go in and see so much was hidden from us.

The Avengers hits all the right notes, and then some, for the fans of the comics, while still being hugely fun and entertaining for movie fans who may not know the comics as well. With an incredible cast that meshes very well across the board, intense action, and very funny as well, while also hitting all the right emotional notes to play on the audiences feelings, the movie just delivers. It may not be perfect, but so what? It’s incredibly entertaining, and is perfect entertainment. This is not only what I consider the greatest comic book movie to date, but the most fun as well. Do they try and top the action and excitement of The Avengers? Time will tell. The Avengers is the absolutely best way for us to start this summer movie season, and I can’t wait to see it again. This is an early contender for my favorite movie of the year, and it’s safe to say that it really is my favorite comic book film. Whedon and his cast have absolutely knocked it out of the park, and it’s going to be huge. Fans and audiences alike are going to love it. This is what going to the movies is for!

MNSSHP What in the world is this?

MNSSHP What in the world is this?

For those of you who don’t know all of the abbreviations of the WDW community it stands for Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party! It’s a must do at least once in your many travels to WDW. We try to plan our trip to Disney World in the fall around the Eat to the Beat concerts and MNSSHP so we can enjoy both.

So what is this party all about ?
It’s all about FUN! It’s a Halloween party for all ages. It’s the only time grown ups can dress up as their favorite character *in a tasteful manner of course* and not feel silly walking  skipping through the MK *Magic Kingdom* collecting candy and singing along with the Boo To You parade. There are many reasons to make this one of your Must Do’s on your WDW Bucket List!

The fireworks are the BEST of the year.Even according to the CM’s the only thing better is fireworks on New Year’s Eve (and that’s even debatable). The fireworks display is called Happy HalloWishes. This is where the Grim Grinning Ghosts come out to socialize. It will have you heading to the closest shop to purchase the special event music CD.*I know because we bought it and have listened to it for almost 6 years now all year long*

You get to Trick or Treat in the happiest place on earth and you children will be the envy of all of their school friends. There are special locations set up for you to trick or treat along with your children. They do not discriminate based on age…they encourage everyone to take a bag when entering the park so that nobody has to argue over candy.

Boo To You Parade is full of floats, music and characters all dressed in their Halloween best. There are floats that come down the parade route from different attractions in the park. You never know who you may see sitting on top of the ghostly Pirate ship that comes sailing past. Our favorite section is the Haunted Mansion portion of the parade. It has changed some over the years but it still is tops.

The Villain Dance Mix and Mingle is a cool show to watch. This one has changed some too. They made Dr. Facilier the center of the show and we were not that impressed with his portion of the show.We love Maleficent and her evil ways.Either way it is a cool way to get your picture taken after the show with your favorite Villain.

Dance Parties!! Who doesn’t like to shake their tail feathers with Donald Duck ?? They have in the past had 2 locations. One in Tomorrowland and the other over at Ariel’s Grotto. These are always a fun thing to do with the little ones who have lots of pinned up energy or who have consumed too much sugar through the night. There are characters who come out to dance with the crowds and make dancing fun!

This is a special ticketed event that requires an additional admission into the the MK during certain nights starting September 11th until November 2nd. If you plan on going to the party on Halloween night you will want to purchase the tickets as soon as you have your travel dates. This is one night that sells out a few months before the party.
The MK closes at 7pm on the nights of MNSSHP to the public but you can enter the park with your special event ticket starting at 4pm.Be sure to get your wristband so that you are not escorted out of the park. We have witnessed this on several occasions in the past. It’s never fun being escorted through the parks by CM’s *Cast Members* doing the walk of shame because you tried sneaking into the party without the proper ticket/wristband.
Also all rides, attractions and restaurants are not open during the Halloween party. This is a little disappointing to some
people but we have always enjoyed the transformation from the typical day in the MK to the fun of the Halloween festivities. Don’t forget you charge your cameras, grab your autograph books and your children for one of the best Halloween parties around!
I hope to see you there this year!

Garden View Tea Room: 5 Tips to Know Before You Go!

Garden View Tea Room: 5 Tips to Know Before You Go!

Calling all girly girls!  Ladies, it is time for you to start booking your advanced dining reservations for a simply divine experience!  Read this first, but immediately after you read it…go get on the computer or dial 407-939-3463 to make a tea date!  Afternoon tea is offered from 2-5pm daily at the Grand Floridian’s Garden View Tea Room.  If you’ve never had afternoon tea, this is a great first experience.  With choices from an a la carte menu or packages to cover your whole experience, this tea is not something you’ll want to miss.  Today we are looking at my top 5 tips for tea…

#1 Trust your waiter!

As with most Disney cast members, our waiter at the Garden View Tea Room provided us with the best service.  He made suggestions for our tea selection, taking the time to ask what flavors we liked and he even describe each tea.  I ended up with the Mad Hatter Tea and it was a delicious !  Our waiter was right on!  This fruity black tea with a hint of chocolate in the background, hit the spot!

#2 Maximize your selection

I recommend each person in your party select a different tea.  This way you get more bang for your buck.  I went to tea with 4 of my dearest friends, so we decided to each choose a different selection.  As the individual tea pots were delivered to the table, we poured our first cup.  After enjoying our own tea we sampled around the table.  It was a lot of fun to compare the flavors (and even more fun to make plans for what tea to order next time!).

#3 Save some room

I wasn’t expecting to get as much food as we did!  We went with the Buckingham Palace Tea package.  This is a traditional tea served with with a savory course, scones, and pastries.  There were 5 scrumptious tea sandwiches and an onion tart with the first course, a scone and strawberry tart with the second course, and we finished it off with a choice of two pastries!  Not to mention, the tea!  I was SO full!  Luckily, we ate a big breakfast and skipped lunch!  Next time, I am going to make sure to save plenty of room for all that tea has to offer!

#4 Enjoy the break

Taking time out of the parks may seem like a bad move.  I am a full steam park enthusiast, on mission to make the most of my days in the parks!  That said, I found the chance to slow down and enjoy the company of my best friends at Disney to be truly delightful!  The relaxing piano music streaming in from the lobby added to the beautiful surroundings.  It was good to slow down and I highly recommend this quiet spot!

#5 War of the Roses

I didn’t know that we would get a fresh rose at the end of our tea!  I had plans to head to the Magic Kingdom with my friend, but where were we to put our beautiful roses?  We decided to carry them into the parks (there was a lot of interesting conversation with the security guards at the bag check!).  It was only a couple of steps into the queue for Space Mountain that we made a horrible call…we decided to stow the token of our tea away in a bag as we enjoyed the ride.  Long story short, my flower, was…no more.  I wish I’d taken the time to drop my beautiful flower off at my resort.  Yes, it was just a flower, but it was a beautiful flower which I wish I could have enjoyed for more than just an hour!  Heads up, take time to smell the roses or you’ll be left with a big mess like me!

Have you ever had tea at the Garden View Tea Room?  If not, I hope you’ll take a couple of hours from the parks to relax and enjoy some tea with your friends!  What are you waiting for…go make those ADRs now!

Take the Wildlife Express Train at Animal Kingdom

Take the Wildlife Express Train at Animal Kingdom

When going to Disney’s Animal Kingdom theme park a great stop is the Wildlife Express Train. It is something fun to do whether it is raining or not and is often overlooked. It is found toward the back of the park in the Africa area behind the Tree of Life.

If you want to get out of the sun or someone in your group loves animals consider this option. If anyone in your party is not interested  in rides or is ready for a break this is the place to go. If you have a little one that’s not quite ready for rides then this is a perfect location. Catching a ride on the train usually doesn’t take long. The seats are designed for guests a look straight to the land beside them as they travel. It is something for the whole family with the train ride lasting about seven minutes.

During your journey you will be able to see animal housing as well as animal care units while Disney magic transports passengers to the African Savanna. You travel to Rafiki’s Planet Watch and the train ride is the only way there. This location is dedicated to animal conservation and preservation complete with educational activities.

Habitat Habit!

This is a wildlife trail presenting guests, while on the walk, the opportunity of observing the cotton-top tamarin, which are South American monkeys.

Affection Section

Is more than a petting zoo  — it is a Disney World petting zoo. Various animals include sheep, llamas, donkeys, goats, and chickens. Actually, this is the only location in Animal Kingdom that gives guests this opportunity. Just keep in mind flash photography is not permitted. Don’t worry either about petting all those animals because sanitation stations are available for hand washing.

Conservation Station

This is an air-conditioned building that gives guests a chance to see animals and learn more about them. It is an open area with various activities including a self-guided tour backstage with video cameras  for real time animal viewing. Adults and children can also find it interesting when learning about how the animals are cared for with a look at the working veterinary clinic. Visiting the Conservation Station is good any time of day, but if you are really interested in seeing animal care consider venturing here in the morning. Most care happens before Noon with a schedule generally posted. If you have questions Cast Members are available to provide answers too.

Another benefit of this location are character greetings. Various characters have made appearances including Pocahontas, Terk, Lilo and Stitch. Many guests have been disappointed to learn Jiminy Cricket will no longer be appearing as it was the only location throughout Disney World to find him. The main character continues to be Rafiki though. Since this is often an area less traveled you can usually catch characters with little or no waiting, giving you quality time with the character. Check with cast members when entering the park and ask about who is appearing and when they will be available.

The Avatar expansion is beginning preparation with the idea of closing the train and Rafiki’s Planet Watch. Nevertheless, part of the charm of this area is you can get away from the hustle and bustle of the park’s bigger elements. This is really more than a train ride. When leaving this area it is a five minute train ride back to the rest of what Animal Kingdom has to offer.

Master Chef Kevin Dundon has created a tantalizing menu incorporating fresh seasonal flavours for a special Midsummer’s Night Feast which takes place on the 20th June.  Midsummer is such a joyous occasion long associated with ancient summer customs and traditions.

The June festival of Midsummer’s Day is held as part of the summer solstice which is the longest day of the year. In ancient times the Summer Solstice was hugely significant; it was a time when the power of the Sun was at its highest and crops & fields were blessed to ensure a good harvest.

Celebrations take place across Europe dating back thousands of years, with festivals of music & dancing, bonfires and feasting.  The summer solstice is often the time of the first harvest and hence a celebration of nature’s bounty.

Midsummer was traditionally celebrated in Ireland by the lighting of bonfires.  Family and friends came together for an evening of music, storytelling, feasting and merrymaking.  It was the custom for the ashes from the fires to be thrown on fields as an ‘offering’ to protect the crops.

Nowadays people gather around some of Ireland’s famous Neolithic sites Newgrange (a passage tomb built over 5,000 years ago) and Hill of Tara (a magical Medieval site which has been home to gods and goddesses, to druids and warriors, and to Ireland’s High King) to celebrate the summer solstice.

Exciting New DVD For Disney And Rail Fans: The Favorite – Retlaw Combine 101

Exciting New DVD For Disney And Rail Fans: The Favorite – Retlaw Combine 101

When Walter Disney was a boy in Kansas City he worked aboard the passenger trains as a news butcher, selling newspapers, candy, and the like. He kept his supplies in the baggage compartment, and visited with train crews while sitting on trunks or barrels or mailbags.

It has often been said that Walt didn’t build a railroad because he built Disneyland; he built Disneyland so he could have a railroad. Indeed the railroad was originally operated as a separate company with separately paid employees. He carefully oversaw the design and construction of the railroad equipment, and he made sure that the passenger train (designated “Retlaw 1”) included a Combine car as the first car behind the steam engine. This car combined two functions, having both a passenger area, and a baggage area. Combine No. 101 was said to be his Favorite car on the railroad.

Main Street Station was and still is the first Disneyland building visitors see when they arrive at the gates. Hearing the steam whistles and seeing the trains rumble overhead as you walked toward the tunnels is the dramatic welcome most visitors will never forget.

In the 1950’s and 60’s visitors wanting to ride closest to the engine would head straight for the Combine. A fortunate few could ride in the baggage compartment itself. Decorations included wooden steamer trunks and bright red gunpowder kegs. Watching the comparatively open park roll by through the large open baggage door would have been a thrill, as every cast member stopped what they were doing to turn and wave at the train.

After having been inaccessible to the public for nearly 40 years, it created a sensation in the world of Disneyland Railroad enthusiasts to learn that the Combine was coming out of private storage to be restored for public display by the Carolwood Pacific Historical Society. Then an even greater excitement came when it was announced that the car would not only be on static display, but that for the first time in decades it would run on the rails again, united with four of the original Retlaw 1 coaches at the Pacific Coast RR in Santa Margarita, California.

Guests enjoyed a truly red carpet weekend.

  • Riding aboard private Vistadomes behind Amtrak
  • Lectures from Disney Legends and current animators and Imagineers
  • A lively auction of memorabilia from the parks and personal collections
  • A catered lunch in the historic Mission Asistencia, the oldest standing building in California.
  • A chance to meet and mingle with numerous past and present Disney and Pixar artists.
  • The privilege of being the first passengers to ride in this famous car in decades (And the only ones ever to ride in it outside Disneyland).

Early in the morning, the air was cool and crisp. The mood was electric. Everyone waited next to the track in anticipation. As the train first crested the hill and The Favorite came into view with its fresh paint and pinstriping, the crowd erupted in applause. Throughout the day guests were speechless as childhood memories of riding the Disneyland railroad came back to life. Some were near tears as they appreciated the importance of the Combine to Disney history.

Robinson & Associates was honored to be invited to create the documentary of this historic event. It is a joy to bring viewers along for the ride during this historic event.

Special Features

Michael Broggie

Michael’s father Roger was the original Imagineer. Michael learned about trains at Walt’s knee, and he literally wrote the book about Walt Disney’s love of trains. [Walt Disney’s Railroad Story]

Bob Gurr (Disney Legend)

Was one of the early Imagineers and designed “almost everything that had wheels”, including the Monorail, Autopia, the Submarine and the later Disneyland Railroad passenger cars. He also goes into detail about the little known Viewliner, which was always intended to be a temporary train ride (1957-1959)

Floyd Norman (Disney Legend)

Discusses his time at Disney studios and how much railroading was a prominent part of the culture.

Terri Hardin (Imagineer alumnus)

Discusses the depth and the energy of the Carolwood Pacific Historical Society and fans of Disney railroading.

Tim LaGaly (Restoration specialist)

He and his crew not only restored the Combine, they were awarded the contract to restore prestigious Lilly Belle parlor car, which still operates for VIPs at Disneyland. Tim speaks at length about the work that went into bringing both these cars into better-than-new condition.

Sean Bautista (Restoration specialist)

Explains the work involved in restoring DLRR Coach #105.

Combine Timeline

  • 1955 Disneyland opens with Walt making his grand entry on Retlaw 1. Very early the need to load and unload passengers more quickly became clear.
  • 1958 The Grand Canyon Diorama opened, passengers wished for a better view and seats facing sideways.
  • 1960’s After the newer passenger cars were built, the Retlaw 1 train set was relegated largely to rainy days and fill-in running.
  • 1974 Placed in permanent storage in the back of the roundhouse
  • 1992 Sold to Bill Norred
  • 2010 Acquired by Carolwood Foundation, restored for display in Griffith Park.
