Disney World Planning: Picking Non Busy Times to Go

Disney World Planning: Picking Non Busy Times to Go

My family and I are finding it hard and harder to plan our Disney World Vacations during slower times of the year. The reason is there is NO MORE slow times of the year at Walt Disney World.

We have a membership to Touring Plans. Like most people I use the Crowd Calendar to plan when we are going to visit the theme parks. There in lies the problem. LIKE MOST PEOPLE.

Disney World Planning: Picking Non Busy Times to Go

In this day and age everyone is using tools like Touring Plans Crowd Calendar to plan when to go to Disney World.  In the picture above is the estimated Crowd Levels for Feb 2013. In the past February is usually not that busy. Other than Presidents Week we have visited with minimal crowds. That my friends is no longer the case.

As you can see where there used to be 1’s & 2’s they are now replaced with 3’s & 4’s. Our last trip I was forced to figure out a new way to travel which seemed to help with the unexpected crowds.

So I couldn’t say we offer Planning Tips if I didn’t offer up a way to pick Non Busy Times to goto the parks. I think in this day in age till Disney decides to build a 3rd theme park here in the US you are just going to have to pick dates when there is nothing going on.

Things like Free Dining, Special Room Rates, Park Events, etc. Of course that means you will be paying a higher price to go to the Parks. So you and your family will have to decide which is the lesser of 2 evils.

Crowds vs Saving Money

I wish I had a magic crystal ball and be able to predict when the best time to go now. Unfortunately like you we are all stuck in the same boat of guessing when that is.

I want here what you think. Do you think the parks are becoming to crowded? Is it becoming impossible to pick a slow season?

Drink Around the World Showcase – Classic American Beer at Fife & Drum Tavern

Drink Around the World Showcase – Classic American Beer at Fife & Drum Tavern

Fife & Drum Tavern at American Adventure, Epcot

In many ways, the American Adventure in Epcot is located perfectly for a quick, palate-cleansing stop on a “Drink Around the World Showcase” (DAWS) day. Located halfway around World Showcase, the American Adventure focuses as much on comfort food and non-alcoholic beverages as it does on its beer selections.

All this may be a polite way of saying that there’s a limited selection of alcoholic drinks at the U.S. pavilion. The Fife & Drum Tavern, the drink and snack kiosk at the American Adventure, isn’t much of a tavern at all. It’s a snack shack that serves two draft beers: Bud Light and a Sam Adams seasonal beer that changes with the time of year.

Drink Around the World Showcase – Classic American Beer at Fife & Drum Tavern
Samuel Adams Beer. Bryan Rosengrant. Flickr.

So with those choices, I order up a Samuel Adams. After all, it is a classic and, for my taste buds, the better of the two selections. And the seasonal beer selection allows Disney to shift the to lighter beers during the hotter seasons and heavier, darker beers during cooler periods. But really, given the ubiquity of the two beers, just pick your favorite brand.

The limited selection of beer, representing two of the most familiar American breweries, might be cause for some mild complaints about the American Adventure on a DAWS day. The beer, however, does represent American brewing traditions. Budweiser have been brewing beer since the 1870s, roughly the same period that  the family of Jim Koch, the founder of Sam Adams, had been brewing beer. (As a brand, Sam Adams debuted in 1985.)

If you look at DAWS as participating in Epcot’s cultural-entertainment mission, then –focusing on gastronomical tourism – the beer selections make sense.

There’s an added benefit or two from the menu. The Fife & Drum Tavern offers a number of hearty foods to complement the beer, and to encourage Disney guests to balance out their consumption of alcohol. At the tavern you can enjoy some cult foods favored by Disney regulars: the  turkey leg, the bucket of popcorn and the funnel cake kiosk also located in the American Adventure area.

Also consider using the American Adventure for A DAWS non-alcoholic drink, where there’s a wider selection. Try the frozen lemonade or, better yet, the slushes at Fife & Drum Tavern that come in blue raspberry and strawberry; that’s right, patriotic colors.

Liberty Inn offers the same beer selections, if you’d prefer to enjoy your beer with a cheeseburger or chili-cheese dog, among its menu of American fast food classics. It somehow seems appropriate to do so, if you’re going for a DAWS beer-focused tour of Epcot World Showcase.

Could the Disney Vacation Club be Right for Your Family?

Could the Disney Vacation Club be Right for Your Family?

You see the signs everywhere when you visit Walt Disney World: on busses, in the hotels, even at the parks: “Have you heard about Disney’s best kept secret”? That secret, of course, is the Disney Vacation Club, and as Disney continues their plans to expand  their timeshare option with the construction of more DVC properties….well, I don’t know that it is much of a *secret* any more.

But maybe in a way it still is. I think most people are somewhat familiar with Disney Vacation Club, and may even have a pretty good idea of how it works. But the secret, in my opinion, may just be how affordable DVC membership can make your Disney vacations, under the right circumstances. You just have to determine if it makes sense for your situation.

Let me explain how DVC worked out for our family.

We became DVC owners in 2005. We had talked to a number of folks about it before this, both the salespeople at Walt Disney World, as well as various people that we met at the parks, or our resort hotel. Interestingly, it was these families, the DVC members that truly sold us on the idea of buying into Disney Vacation Club. There was one constant refrain shared by every single owner we talked to: “Best thing we ever did, and we so wish we had done it sooner”.

That’s some pretty powerful words there. So we began to do some research, and on our New Year’s trip that year, we decided to start the New Year off right with a tour of the (then) new DVC resort, Saratoga Springs.

I have to say that we thoroughly enjoyed the tour, and if you ever decide to take the DVC tour, know that Disney, being Disney, does this very well indeed. Tugging at heartstrings, bringing a tear to your eye, the whole nine yards….they are very persuasive, let me tell ya.

We were pretty much sold on DVC at that point, but I am not one to commit large sums of money to something just because I picture taking my grandchildren on It’s a Small World someday. I’m a practical sort, so after talking it over, my husband and I decided to take a few days to think it over.

(Know that DVC is in the business of selling timeshares, and they *will* do whatever it takes to make it worth your while to buy right then and there…including some attractive discounts that expire in a week or so. So be prepared for that. However, I will say that they did not pressure us in any way, and completely honored our request to think it over, which I personally appreciated.)

The thing that was truly holding us back from buying at that moment was that we weren’t really in love with Saratoga Springs. We were in love with the idea of DVC however….and fortunately I always do my research, so I knew that it was possible to become a Disney Vacation Club owner at other, previously “sold out” resorts, by purchasing them on the resale market.

In other words, buying from a private individual, rather than directly from Disney.

When you do this, there are some pretty decent benefits, which can often make this a more affordable way to buy DVC than directly through Disney:

  • You have your choice of buying any of the DVC resort properties
  • You will pay less per point than buying the current DVC offering
  • (And this may be the biggest one of all): There is no minimum amount of points you have to buy. Fewer points means fewer dollars to spend upfront.

Now there are some things to consider if you are interested in buying DVC this way. It’s a bit too involved for this article, but just know that there is a process that needs to be followed, and Disney must approve the sale. And yes, in some instances they do refuse to approve the sale. So probably the best piece of advice I can give you is to go through a timeshare resale company, as they will make sure all goes well. The one we used was The Timeshare Store, but there are other very good ones as well.

So when is it worth your while…and wallet…to buy into DVC?

While there are a number of things to consider, I think the main issues driving whether this would be beneficial to you are these:

  • How often do you currently visit Disney World….or do you plan to visit Disney World in the future? A visit once every couple of years may not make it worth it, but a visit at least once per year just might…
  • Would the cost of the yearly DVC maintenance fee be less than you would typically pay for your accommodations for your Disney trips each year? Many people forget about this part: every DVC resort has a yearly maintenance fee that must be paid….basically homeowner’s association dues. Depending on the resort and number of points you have, it can get pricey, so you should figure out what you would pay for accommodations each year if you didn’t have DVC membership, and see which is cheaper.
  • Do you have the ability to plan your Disney vacations far in advance? DVC is best utilized by those who can plan a vacation 6 months to a year in advance. While there is short-term availability, the best selection will be well before your trip…so if you typically plan your vacations a month or so before you leave, Disney Vacation Club may not work out as well for you as it would if you could book farther in advance.

Considering all of these things, and looking into the options available on the resale market, I will say that if you have the funds initially, DVC can be a great way to vacation at Disney World affordably for many years to come.

Nancy, her husband and college-age daughter live in the Baltimore MD area, but consider Walt Disney World their second “home”. She started her site, The Affordable Mouse, as a way to share ideas about how to plan affordable Disney vacations. Her favorite things at Disney World (in no particular order) are Soarin’, most of the food in World Showcase, Illuminations…and watching children’s faces light up when they see their favorite characters in person.

Stay Healthy On Vacation With These Food Options At The WDW Value Resorts

Stay Healthy On Vacation With These Food Options At The WDW Value Resorts

For many people, the only way they can afford a Walt Disney World vacation is to stay at the Value Resorts, which is Disney’s least expensive group of hotels. I am part of this group, and I personally LOVE the Value Resorts, the decor is huge and tacky and right up my alley, the rooms are just enough for what I need, and there are a lot of food options to choose from!

The 4 (soon to be 5 with Art Of Animation opening later this year!) Value level Resorts are:
All Star Music
-All Star Sports
-All Star Movies
Pop Century

They are all fairly similar in most ways, including in their dining offerings, each of the 4 Resorts has a food court, which is setup with several different stations each serving different types of menu items. There are also areas of pre-packaged meals, snacks, desserts, drinks, etc.

In my experience, it can be hard to eat ‘healthy’ while on vacation, and at Walt Disney World there are so many restaurants and yummy dishes to choose from, that it makes it that much harder to stay on track, food-and-diet-wise! Luckily, there are actually a lot of available choices that can give you the healthy nutrients you need to stay energized for a full day of touring the Parks!

Stay Healthy On Vacation With These Food Options At The WDW Value Resorts

Healthy Meal Options:
-Packaged sandwiches – they come without any dressing/mayo on them (packets are available)
-Packaged and fresh made salads with low fat dressing options
-Packaged Sushi that is made fresh daily (I know because I asked!)
-Yogurt cups – both regular and greek varieties
-Parfaits – a great fast breakfast of yogurt/granola/fruit

Stay Healthy On Vacation With These Food Options At The WDW Value Resorts

Stay Healthy On Vacation With These Food Options At The WDW Value Resorts

Healthy Drink Options:
-Juice – including 100% Simply Orange Juice, and other options that aren’t 100% fruit juice, but hey it’s still a better choice than soda in my book!
-Bottled Water
-Vitamin Water (regular and no calorie varieties available) and Powerade
-Milk options – including 1%, skim, and low fat chocolate
-Soda Machine – Minute Maid Light Lemonade, Diet Coke, and Sprite Zero were all found here
-V8 – because hey, it can’t hurt to get some extra vegetables in your diet while on vacation!

Stay Healthy On Vacation With These Food Options At The WDW Value Resorts

Healthy Snack Options:
-Fruit – mixed fruit salad, bowls of grapes or pineapple, and individual pieces of fruit – which can be used as a dessert if you’re on the Disney Dining Plan
-Celery/Carrot sticks packaged with ranch dressing
-Apple Slices packaged with caramel
-Hummus
-Fat Free, No Sugar added sorbet – available next to the frozen ice cream treats, I have seen Mango but I am sure there are other flavors too

Eating with Kids? All of the Kid’s meals available in the food courts (and most available at the Counter Service restaurants in the Parks too!) include a choice of 2 sides: grapes, carrot sticks, applesauce, yogurt, gelatin, pudding, or a cookie. They also include a choice of beverage: bottled water, 1% milk, 100% apple juice, or a soft drink. Obviously there are some healthier choices in there, which is nice to see, and Disney has been making an effort to push the better-for-you choices (it’s good to have choices for young ones that aren’t just chicken nuggets and fries!)

I don’t know about you, but Dessert can be tricky for me, as I LOVE baked goods, and will take any chance to try something new, be it a cupcake or a cookie, and I am a sucker for the Mickey Rice Krispie Treats! Having the option of getting a piece of fruit or a fruit salad for dessert is great, and it is something I try to take advantage of as often as possible (as long as the cupcakes don’t lure me in, that is!)

One great thing about this is that most of the items I have listed above are pre-packaged, which means not only are they helping you stay healthy, but they are fast and easy to grab on your way to/from the Parks!

I took all of these photos when I was staying at POP Century last month, but I have recently been to the All Star Resorts as well, and the selection they have is pretty much exactly the same as at POP. The Moderate the Deluxe Resorts will also have some of these items, but I personally find that the selection at their Quick Service eateries is not as large (perhaps because at the Value Resorts, there is no other place to eat but the food courts, so Disney makes sure they are stocked with a better variety of items? Just my personal theory!).

I can’t say enough good things about the Value Resorts, and I especially love their food courts, the food is always freshly prepared, the Cast Members are always polite and efficient, and the healthy food options help me stay on track while on vacation, which to me is the biggest perk of all!

Five Rides for Little Guys (and girls) @ Magic Kingdom

Five Rides for Little Guys (and girls) @ Magic Kingdom

There isn’t a “magic” age for a child’s first Disney visit.  I heard somewhere that visiting Disney World should be a rite of passage for all children.  Wow!  How awesome would that be?!  No matter what, with a little planning, your child can enjoy him or herself from a very young age.  Here are my top five attractions for little ones at Magic Kingdom.

1.  Dumbo the Flying Elephant.  When I took my daughter on this for the first time, she was 9 months old.  I seriously cried.  It was so fun!  It’s sort of one of those “Disney Bucket List” experiences for me.  Why?  Because Dumbo is such a Disney classic!  As you control your elephant to go up or down, and look out over Fantasyland, you can’t help but feel taken away by the magic.

2.  It’s a Small World.  Even though the line may appear long, in our experience, this ride loads very quickly.  It’s so fun to point out the international dolls, and feel happy while floating along.  It’s a ride we go on over and over and over again.

3.  The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh.  As you make your way along in your honey pot, your little one is sure to giggle and smile at Pooh and all his friends.  One thing we like about this with little ones, is the waiting area.  There are some interactive toys in Pooh’s “garden” to entertain the kiddos while in line.  Also, the ride is very well lit inside, so no being scared of the dark!

4.  The Jungle Cruise.  Seeing the jungle “animals” is a highlight of our trip.  Just keep a good hold on the little one so they don’t go over the boat :).  The “cruise directors” have an unmatched sense of humor, and there are so many fun things to look at while riding the Jungle Cruise.

Five Rides for Little Guys (and girls) @ Magic Kingdom

5.  Aladdin’s Magic Carpets.  Much like the circular motion of Dumbo, this attraction can be fun for the littles in your family.  As you control your magic carpet up and down, you get a great view of Adventureland and you even might have Aladdin and Jasmine joining you on your carpet ride!

I know that Magic Kingdom holds MANY great attractions for little ones.  What rides would you suggest for little ones at Magic Kingdom?

Carrie

International Tastes with Creative Flair At ‘Landscape of Flavors’ Food Court in Disney’s Art of Animation Resort

International Tastes with Creative Flair At 'Landscape of Flavors' Food Court in Disney's Art of Animation Resort

With tandoor ovens and a 3-foot-wide Mongolian grill for onstage cooking and made-to-order dishes, Landscape of Flavors at Disney’s Art of Animation Resort is the next generation of food courts, keeping pace with the increasingly sophisticated palates of Walt Disney World guests.Guests can play it safe with a create-your-own burger or try something unusual, such as tandoori shrimp with naan bread, or a Mongolian grilled fish with basmati rice.

“When we thought about our talented animators, and the theme behind the resort, we wanted to let the guests know that our chefs are very creative, too,” says Michelle Clegg, food & beverage operations manager for Disney’s Art of Animation Resort.  ”And our guests also are creative, so we’ve given them options to create their own salads, pastas, even yogurt parfaits.”

The restaurant’s décor is inspired by Disney’s animated films, with four seating areas themed to “The Lion King,” “Cars,” “The Little Mermaid” and “Finding Nemo.” Art on the walls is landscape paintings, many from the backgrounds of the blockbuster movies.

“Better-for-you” options at five mini shops serving breakfast, lunch and dinner is the overarching theme in the 606-seat food court just off the lobby.  And special attention is paid to healthful options, from buckwheat pasta to vegetarian offerings such as tandoor-roasted acorn squash.

“The idea is that you customize your choice,” says Chef Ed Wronski, director, food & beverage concept development, Walt Disney Parks and Resorts.  “From burgers to pasta, salads, ethnic flavors, omelets, even parfaits and gelatos, everything is made fresh as you order.”

There’s a big focus on beverages, too.  Fresh fruit smoothies are made to order, also lemonade and pomegranate limeade.  The restaurant stocks organic teas, beer (including gluten free), wine, coffee and juices. Guests can get a plain cup of coffee or a French vanilla or mocha iced.  And half bottles of wine are paired with cuisine from the food shops.

Menu highlights:

  • The Soup-Salad-Sandwich Shop lets you create your own salad (with chicken or shrimp), and offers a caprese sandwich with fresh mozzarella and tomatoes on focaccia, or a Buffalo-style turkey sandwich with arugula and a blue cheese-Buffalo sauce-mayo spread.  Both served with house-made potato chips.
  • The World Flavors Shop adds international flair to breakfast, too, with challah French toast or a  veggie flatbread sandwich on naan with cauliflower, spinach and paneer. Lunch and dinner is a choice of tandoori chicken, shrimp, or sausage; and  Mongolian beef or fish with basmati or multigrain rice.

The Pizza Shop features make-your-own pasta, cheese and pepperoni pizzas, and meatballs on ciabatta bread.  Pizza  delivery is an option, too.

  • The Burger Shop lets guests customize beef, vegetarian, seafood or chicken burgers, and also offers the signature “pastrami cheeseburger.”
  • The Market sweet offerings include smoothies such as wild berry, mango and strawberry-banana; coffees including iced mocha, cappuccino, espresso and iced French vanilla; dessert bites; and authentic gelato.

Disney’s Art of Animation Resort will feature 1,120 highly themed family suites with a spotlight on the stories and playful characters from favorite Disney*Pixar films.  The Finding Nemo wing will open May 31, Cars opens June 18 and Lion King will follow on August 10. The Little Mermaid buildings will feature 864 standard guestrooms in the “value” room category set to open September 15.

Using Disney Calendars to Plan Your Park Visits

Using Disney Calendars to Plan Your Park Visits

When it comes time to plan your days in the parks, an effective tool can be the calendars found on Disney’s website.  About a month before we are set to leave, I start browsing the calendars to plan which day we’ll visit each park.

At the top menu, click “Parks”.  From the drop down menu, choose which park you’d like.  Then, on the left side of the page, you’ll see “Calendar”.  This will take you to the park’s calendar.  You have to follow this procedure for each park.  On the top right hand side of the calendar, you’ll see a drop down menu.  From here, you can choose the dates you are going to be at Disney.  By clicking on each day individually, you’ll find:

1.  Extra Magic Hours – We are a “late” EMH family.  On the day(s) that Magic Kingdom is open until midnight, we take our time getting there in the morning.  We do a little touring, and go back to the resort mid afternoon for a swim and rest.  Then, we head back to the park for dinner and hopefully the Main Street Electrical Parade and/or Wishes.  Since the Magic Kingdom typically has late EMH more than once a week, I choose a day from our stay with late hours as one of our Magic Kingdom days.

2.  Parades and Shows -Let’s say you are viewing the calendar for the Magic Kingdom, and you see that June 3 is a day you want to hit Magic Kingdom.  By clicking where it says “Park Hours”, you’ll be taken to a list of times that includes Dream along with Mickey, Celebrate a Dream Come True Parade, Wishes, and Main Street Electrical Parade.  By seeing these major happenings during the day, you can plan your park tour as well.  If you know the Dream along with Mickey is showing last at 7:40, perhaps after seeing it you grab a seat for the Main Street Electrical Parade which starts at 9:00 pm.  Grab a late snack, a seat for the parade, and you’re set.  Thanks to using the calendar before your trip, you knew to prepare for this.

On the calendar for Disney’s Hollywood Studios, you’ll see times for Pixar’s Pals Countdown to Fun Parade and Fantasmic. Another great resource on these pages is what attractions are being refurbished and when.  Animal Kingdom’s calendar will show times for Festival of the Lion King, Mickey’s Jammin’ Jungle Parade, amongst other activities.

Using Disney Calendars to Plan Your Park Visits

3.  EPCOT World Showcase Performances~~On the EPCOT calendar, you will find times for almost ANYTHING in World Showcase.  The EPCOT calendar is very detailed.  Not only does it show times for Illuminations and Turtle Talk with Crush, but the Mariachi band, World Showcase Players, and Spirit of America Fife and Drum Corps schedules, too.

It’s always a good idea to check the calendars a week or so before you leave.  That way, you can make any last minute adjustments to your park plans.

Quick Tip – Another Planning tool you can use is Touring Plans Crowd Calendar. Touring Plans lists all the dates along with Crowd Predictions to help you plan your Disney World Vacation.

Do you use the Disney calendars to plan your visit?  Do you plan your days around Extra Magic Hours, parades, or night shows?
