Mad Men’s Jon Hamm to Star in Disney Sports Drama Movie

Mad Men's Jon Hamm to Star in Disney Sports Drama Movie

According to the The Hollywood Reporter Jon Hamm (Mad Men) has signed on to play sports agent J.B. Bernstein in Disney’s The Million Dollar Arm. The movie tells the story of Bernstein an American sports agent who discovered two teenage cricket players from India by using a reality TV program that he created aimed at finding who could through a baseball the fastest. He then brings the teenagers back to America and they eventually sign with a major league team.

The film is still looking for a director and no release date has been set. Disney has a great track record when it comes to sports related films, Miracle, The Rookie, and Remember the Titans to name a few. I am excited to see how this one develops.

A Pearl of a Wisdom: Don’t Miss This Souvenir From Epcot’s Japan Pavilion

A Pearl of a Wisdom: Don't Miss This Souvenir From Epcot's Japan Pavilion

With gift shops around just about every corner, Disney World has a lot to offer in the line of souvenirs.  There are the typical character clad gifts like t-shirts, picture frames, and stuffed animals; today we are talking something in a bit of a different direction!  Epcot’s World Showcase provides you a trip around the world in just over a mile!  This isn’t just a site seeing tour my friends!  This is a tour for the senses as there are sights to behold, sounds to enjoy, smells to tempt you, items to be touched (and bought),  and of course  your taste buds will be delighted!  With so much to see and do, it is good to have an idea of what you might find as you make your way through World Showcase.  Today I am highlighting the Japan Pavilion’s unique souvenir,  Pick a Pearl.

Who is Pick a Pearl for?

Pick a Pearl is for ANYONE!  There are tons of setting choices and the possibilities for a unique creation are endless!  More importantly, there are tons of oysters waiting to be chosen.  While this is targeted toward women, that doesn’t mean that a sweet boyfriend, husband, or son couldn’t choose a pearl for the lady in their life (hint, hint, hint).

What is Pick a Pearl Anyway?

Here’s how it works, walk to the back of the Mitsukoshi Department Store (in the Japan Pavilion).  Listen for the sound of the drum and the beating of sticks as happy new pearl owners celebrate their find.  As you make your way over you’ll see large tanks containing oysters waiting to be picked for the big reveal.  A cast member will help get the ceremony started as you select just the right oyster.  As your hopes for a magnificent pearl mount, the cast member will open your oyster.  I’ve seen traditional white pearls, colorful pearls, pearls that are  big, small, and in between.  Pearls are measured and the celebration begins.  (Tip here:  if you don’t want to be at the center of drum banging attention…you might want to skip this spot).  Your pearl info is written on your baggy and you can go to the jewelery counter to choose a setting.  There are many settings availible.  The cost of the pearl is about $15.  The cost of each setting varies, but you could leave with a one of a kind souvenir for relatively cheap.

When can you Pick a Pearl?

You can Pick a Pearl anytime within the operating hours of World Showcase (11am -9pm).

Where do you go to find Pick a Pearl?

Mitsukoshi Department store in the Japan Pavilion at Epcot’s World Showcase.

Why would you want to Pick a Pearl?

I like to take home something from my trip.  When I go to Disney World I always choose something that will take me back to that moment and that time.  I am on the hunt for new, original, and different!  Picking a pearl seems like the perfect one of a kind gift!  No two pearls are exactly alike, settings can totally transform your find into something beautiful, and let’s not forget the experience of it all!  It’s not every day that a drum is beat for the world to hear as you make a purchase!

Are you a repeat pearl picker?  Maybe you aren’t.  I hope you will stop by the Japan Pavilion next time you are in Epcot to pick a pearl of your own or maybe just celebrate another guest’s find!  I know you’ll enjoy this unique experience!

Some Frequently Asked Disney Vacation Questions

Some Frequently Asked Disney Vacation Questions

So your Disney Countdown is on the wall and you are excited but still have a lot of unanswered questions ………

I have had a full inbox today from excited clients with their vacations approaching with similar questions so I thought I should write a quick article to help any of you who also may have these lingering questions about your upcoming Disney vacations.

1). When will we get our tickets?

At Pixie Vacations we always mail our clients a package about 2 weeks prior to your trip and it typically contains some travel incentive goodies and a travel itinerary, but what about the all important Disney park tickets and dining credits that you purchased?? Well……… when you check in you get a “Key to the World” card. Everyone in your traveling party will get one of these cards at check in. The “Key to the World” cards will have your tickets that you purchased with your reservation loaded onto them as well as any dining credits that you purchased with a Disney dining plan.

You can also determine if you want to allow charging to the room on any or all of the cards. For us, we typically will add a credit card to our “Key to the World” cards but not the kids. When you allow charging on your “Key to the World” card it makes it super easy in the parks because there is no need to carry cash.

For tipping at dining locations you can also just charge those to the room so cash is not needed. If you don’t want to wrack up a high credit card bill at check out and have cash or Disney gift cards, etc. you want to use, simply go down to the counter the night before check out and settle up the bill. They WILL charge your card if the amount goes over $400 dollars so you can keep tabs on what you owe by calling down to the front desk and inquiring about your bill.

2). What is this Magical Express all about?

Magical Express is a free transfer service to and from the Orlando International Airport available to ALL resort guests.

You DO NOT have to book your air through Disney in order to get this service! Your simply need to provide your airline and flight information to Disney or your travel agent and inform them you want to take advantage of Disney’s Magical Express.

You will get a packet from Disney’s Magical Express a few weeks before your trip and it will include yellow luggage tags with your resort name on it that you  place on your checked bags.

Some Frequently Asked Disney Vacation Questions

Once you check your bags at your departing airport your bags will then “Magically appear” in your Disney resort hotel room (about 2-3 hours after your flight lands), there is NO need to go to baggage from baggage claim at the Orlando International Airport.

If you WANT to get your own bags you can do this and THEN make your way to the Magical Express counter in Terminal B.

In your Magical Express packet that was mailed to you there will be detailed information on where to go to pick up the Magical Express bus inside of the Orlando airport terminal as well as “vouchers” for you to present to the driver.

Magical Express going HOME:

2 days before you check out you will have a Magical Express envelope on your resort door with pick up time (3 hours before your scheduled flight home) to the Orlando airport as well as vouchers for your ride back to the airport.

Some Frequently Asked Disney Vacation Questions

You can check your bags for your flight (for most major airlines) right there at your Disney hotel and they will take your bags and print your boarding passes so all you need to do is catch Magical Express and you will be on your way.

3). What if my flight isn’t until 8pm but checkout is at 11am?

You are not “kicked off” of property at 11am. You can check your luggage for your flight and leave any unchecked bags with Bell Services while you take the day to enjoy the pool or take in a theme park before your flight home.

There are restrooms and changing areas by all of the pools at the various resort hotels so you can get changed and cleaned up before your flight in there.

If you have dining credits left they do not expire until midnight the night of check in, so get your eat on! : )

4). Do I have to decide ahead of time what park I will go to on which day or can we change our mind?

If you have base tickets you can only visit one park per day but you can exit and re enter that park at any time on that same day. If you purchased park hoppers you can enter and exit any theme park multiple times per day (i.e. going to Magic Kingdom in the morning and Epcot in the evening).

You can not use your base ticket in the morning at Epcot for example and then think you can use another day of your base ticket that night at Magic Kingdom (Disney is smarter than this : )

Your park tickets on your reservation activate when you use it on that first day and you have 14 days from that first use until they expire (this is for non expiration option tickets) so you can be as spontaneous or as organized as you want to be throughout your vacation.

So what did I miss? What unanswered questions do you have about your upcoming Disney vacation?

Disney Announces ABC News and Univision to Join Forces

Disney Announces ABC News and Univision to Join Forces

Disney has announced that ABC News will be joining  Univision to launch  news, lifestyle, and information programming aimed at U.S Hispanics. This will come together across multiple platforms. A website and social media content are expected to begin this summer and a television channel is expected to launch sometime in 2013.  The network will broadcast in English and  according to ABC News coverage will focus on “the issues most relevant for U.S. Hispanics, including the economy, jobs, health care, immigration, education, politics, entertainment, health and wellness and more.”

This will be a partnership between the two networks and they will each own 50 percent of the venture. They will also share both news gathering and production resources. The New York Times reports that this will allow both companies to grow, “Disney, by negotiating a per-subscriber fee for the channel that will support ABC News, and Univision, by expanding into English-speaking media for the first time.”

Disney Legend Alice Davis Will Receive an Honorary Window on Main Street, U.S.A., Tomorrow Morning at Disneyland

Disney Legend Alice Davis Will Receive an Honorary Window on Main Street, U.S.A., Tomorrow Morning at Disneyland

Tomorrow morning marks a very special day for Alice Davis: she has earned her place on Main Street with a window. Employed by Walt himself, Davis is known for developing costumes for the theme parks, films, and television programs. She was married to Marc Davis, an Imagineer and one of Disney’s “Nine Old Men” animators.

Davis’ work in Disneyland park ranges from the costumes the children wear on “it’s a small world” to the dirty, raggedy attire worn by the pirates in Pirates of the Caribbean. She retired from WED (Walt Disney Enterprises, now known as Walt Disney Imagineering) in 1978 but still consults on film projects, most recently Disney/Pixar’s “Up”.

Davis was named a Disney Legend in 2004. Her window will be right next to her husband’s.

I will be there tomorrow morning (before school!) and I plan to tweet live during the event. You can follow me on Twitter at @ocswaynee to follow along with the event as it happens.

“Carbon-Freeze Me” Experience at Star Wars Weekends 2012

"Carbon-Freeze Me" Experience at Star Wars Weekends 2012

Coming this year to Star Wars Weekends at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, you’ll have the opportunity to relive the famous carbon freezing scene from The Empire Strikes Back with the “Carbon-Freeze Me” experience. This new experience was created especially for Disney Parks, and is part of our “D-Tech Me” line that uses technology to take personalization to a whole new level.

Using state-of-the-art imaging technology, this experience casts your likeness as a three-dimensional, eight-inch figurine. At the “Carbon Freezing Chamber” (located adjacent to The American Idol Experience), several cameras will capture multiple angles of your face. The images are then reconstructed in a computer for processing, and, in approximately four weeks, the completed figurine is shipped directly to your house.

Each carbonite figurine is $99.95 (plus shipping). You can order additional figurines using the same image scan for $74.95 each. The replica figurine can be hung on a wall, just like the gangster Jabba the Hutt did in Return of the Jedi. Guests also receive a light-up wristband.

The experience will officially open on Friday May 18 with the launch of Star Wars Weekends 2012. Reservations are required and can be made starting Monday, May 7 by calling 407-WDW-TECH (407-939-8324).

*Please note – Separate Theme Park admission required for Disney’s Hollywood Studios. No discounts apply unless otherwise noted. Guests must be at least three (3) years of age to participate. A valid accepted credit card number is required at time of booking. No-shows or in the event a reservation is cancelled within 48 hours of scheduled experience will result in such credit card being charged a $25 cancellation fee. The experience, due to its personalized nature is non-refundable and not eligible for an exchange. Children must be accompanied by an adult at least 18 years of age or older during the entire experience. Certain restrictions may apply. All prices, components and information are subject to change without notice.

Marvel Comics and Benefit Cosmetics Join Forces to Create Female Comic Hero

Marvel Comics and Benefit Cosmetics Join Forces to Create Female Comic Hero

Marvel Comics and Benefit Cosmetics have joined together to bring the world a new female comic book hero, SpyGal. SpyGal’s persona is based off the POREfessional product from Benefit Cosmetics, which features a vintage female hero with a pore-zapping ray gun.

I’m excited to see these comics. I’ve been looking for new comics to read, and having one featuring a respectable female figure is really catching my attention (not all female superheroes need skimpy outfits!). I plan on getting my hands on these as soon as I can.

Here’s the official press release from Marvel:

Benefit Cosmetics & Marvel Custom Solutions Transform Beauty Bestseller into Comic Book Action Hero

Get ready for thrills, frills & espionage! Marvel Custom Solutions, the custom publishing division of Marvel Entertainment, and Benefit Cosmetics, the San Francisco beauty brand known for its fun instant beauty solutions, have co-created SpyGal, the FIRST EVER beauty-inspired comic book hero.

SpyGal’s wise-cracking, pore-zapping persona was modeled after the POREfessional pore minimizing primer. With over 1 million products sold worldwide, the POREfessional is an international sensation. The POREfessional packaging evokes a vintage female action figure complete with a pore-zapping ray gun and touch-up pro case. She’s smooth! She’s sexy! She’s your secret weapon against pores!

“The superpowers of our bestselling pore minimizer, the POREfessional, created such an international sensation, we knew it was destined for greatness!,” explained Julie Bell, EVP Global Marketing at Benefit Cosmetics. “Marvel, the world’s top storytellers, helped us bring our action hero SpyGal to life in the first ever beauty-inspired comic book.”

Inspired by SpyGal’s covert mission to empower women around the world, Marvel and Benefit assembled a dynamic creative team including fan favorite writer James Asmus (Uncanny X-Men,Captain America) and acclaimed artist Phil Noto (Avengers: The Origin, X-Men Origins) to bring SpyGal to life in her collectors’ item debut comic book. Together they seamlessly blended the trademark humor of Benefit with the iconic action & drama of Marvel storytelling to create a witty, globe-trotting espionage adventure.

“It’s exciting to bring Benefit Cosmetics and Marvel Custom Solutions together for such a historic collaboration,” said John Dokes, Marvel SVP of Integrated Sales and Marketing, Publishing and Digital Media. “SpyGal is a dynamic, nuanced hero for a new generation and combining that with the unparalleled storytelling of Marvel brings fans one of the most unique comics they’ll read all year.”

In addition to pulse-pounding beauty action, this very first issue of SpyGal also delivers an exclusive behind-the-scenes peek into the collaborative process that transformed our globe-trottin’, face-savin’ secret agent into a comic book hero. Plus, fans can use the FREE Marvel AR app to access video content from the glamorous world of makeup using their smartphone or tablet!

“Marvel and Benefit both know that humor and intelligence can be a heroes’ greatest strength, especially when faced with life’s modern problems,” said Marvel Custom Solutions Editor Bill Rosemann. “SpyGal dispenses justice, beauty tips and witty life advice with an effortless grace, while also grappling with work and dating worries. Can SpyGal ever find Mr. Right…or must she sacrifice romance to the demands of her job helping powerful women spread their influence around the world? Writer James Asmus and artist Phil Noto reveal all in SpyGal #1!”

Packed with intrigue, romance and excitement, this limited edition SpyGal comic is available in May at Benefit counters everywhere. It’s undercover…and over the top!

What I Wish I Had Known on Our First Visit to Disney

What I Wish I Had Known on Our First Visit to Disney

Traveling to Disney with young children can be exhilarating and exhausting at the same time.  When we traveled to Disney for the first time, our twins were four years old.  We were ALL super excited about them seeing their favorite characters in “real life”.  I had high hopes of them loving Disney on the “real” level…runnign to Mickey for a hug, giggling hysterically during It’s a Bug’s Life, and begging of ran other time on Peter Pan’s Flight.  Well, not so much.  While our trip was fabulous, there are a few things I wish I would’ve considered before going.

1.  A lot of Disney attractions are in the dark.  Yes, we all know that’s true.  Even a slow ride like Peter Pan’s Flight or It’s a Small World can bring on anxiety in young kids.  Perhaps a spin on Dumbo, Aladdin’s Carpets, or a ride on the Jungle Cruise would be an easier way to “break in” a child’s first visit to the Magic Kingdom.

Festival of the Lion King

2.  Disney is loud.  Since all guests at Disney are part of  a “show”, everything is over the top…including the volume.  I love sitting along Main Street during the Celebrate a Dream Come True afternoon parade or Wishes.  But viewing Wishes from outside the park could be less intimidating, and quieter than right there in front of the castle.  Taking a seat toward the back of the auditorium of The Voyage of the Little Mermaid or The Festival of the Lion King may be a better bet than sitting RIGHT in the front.   I want my little ones to see and experience Disney and all its magic.  But, I don’t want them to be startled by not only a HUGE Ursula on stage, but loud music as well.

3.  3D means right in front of you.  Combining the 3D effects, crawly bugs, and loud volume of It’s Tough to be a Bug can leave you scrambling for the door with a stressed out child.  Even to this day, my oldest will not wear his 3D glasses for Mickey’s Philharmagic.  We don’t skip Mickey’s Philharmagic, but I don’t make a big deal out of him just holding them and enjoying the show without them.

What I Wish I Had Known on Our First Visit to Disney

Starting your day at the parks with open rides, a few select character meet and greets, and a relaxed pace can make the whole vacation pleasant for everyone traveling.  Every child is different, but even though your kids giggle at Stitch’s antics on the movies or TV, doesn’t mean they’ll be thrilled with his running across their shoulders and screeching during Stitch’s Great Escape.

Have  you had an experience on a “scary” ride at Disney?  What freaked your child (or you) out to the point that you may not ride it again?

Magically Yours.
