Review: Dumbo’s Disney Classics App Has Landed

iPad app

I’m going to start by being honest here.  When I chose this app to review, it was only because Dumbo is one of my favorite Disney movies.  I can be a bit of a traditionalist, and to me a book is paper with a cover that you keep on a shelf.  Don’t get me wrong, I embrace my iPad.  I just don’t embrace reading books on it.  However, since my children are growing up in a whole different world, I decided to check this app out.

I am in LOVE!  This app is perfect for families and Disney enthusiasts.  First, the “cover” of the book is customizable with your child’s name and photos.  Then then story begins, initially with a narrator reading the text.  You will have the option to record your own voice, which was super easy.  As your child gets older you can turn off the narration and they can read on their own.  Each page features some type of animation.  Some of the animation is interactive.  I won’t give it all away, but touch the stork bundles as they fall from the sky.   When your child touches the characters their name will come up in text and narration. You can turn the pages to read the same tale of Dumbo we loved as children.

What you can do to get your kids ready for Character Meet & Greets!

When we started taking John to Disney World people told us we were crazy, he is too young, he won’t remember, blah blah blah.  His first trip was when he was 8 months old.  We took a Disney cruise on the Disney Dream (this was AMAZING), and then we headed off to Disney World for 4 more nights.  This vacation was the best vacation ever!  We made memories that he may not remember, but we sure will!  While at Castaway Cay he met Donald, his first character.

This meeting was love at first sight!  He was so happy and excited!  At one point he even tried to kiss his beak.  He loved Donald so much that he actually cried when we had to leave!  We have since been back to Disney 2 more times with John (he is only 2), and his love for Disney characters keeps on growing.  He not only calls all of the characters by name, but he also is always on the look out while there and can spot a character from a mile away.

Disney Wins With Dismissal of “Santa Paws” Lawsuit

Disney Wins With Dismissal of "Santa Paws" Lawsuit

A copyright lawsuit that alleges Disney stole the idea and story behind the Santa Paws movies has been dismissed by a Federal Judge. Disney movies, Santa Buddies: The Legend of Santa Paws and The Search for Santa Paws were direct to DVD movies that had a storyline about a cute pup who helps Santa Claus save Christmas.

Ray Harter, Richard Kearney and Ed Corno claimed they conceived of their Santa Paws in 1991 and then sued in December in U.S. District Court in Missouri.

The court acknowledged that the short story and the Disney movies do have similar features: such as they both feature a threat to Christmas and a talking dog named Paws, Santa Paws or Puppy Paws; and they all have magical icicles; etc. There is also some similar dialogue in both the movies and the script.

However, “apart from these abstract similarities, the remaining elements of the plaintiffs’ short story and defendants’ movies are substantially dissimilar,” the court notes. “Furthermore, most of the aforementioned similarities between plaintiffs’ short story and defendants’ works are not protected by copyright law.”

Disney Interactive today announced the launch of “Disney Princess: My Fairytale Adventure,” for the Wii™ system from Nintendo, Nintendo 3DS™ handheld system and Windows PC/Mac.  “Disney Princess: My Fairytale Adventure,” is an all-new interactive journey from the massively successful Disney Princess franchise that immerses players into the enchanted worlds of Ariel, Belle, Cinderella, Rapunzel and Tiana, and gives them the power to save their favorite Princesses by wielding a magic wand.

“We’re excited to announce the launch of ‘Disney Princess: My Fairytale Adventure’ as the newest addition to the Disney Interactive video game family,”said Javier Ferreira, senior vice president of publishing, Disney Interactive. “Fans have told us time and time again that the iconic Disney Princesses are some of their most beloved characters. With the launch of this title, through captivating gameplay, we’ll bring Disney fans the sense of wonder surrounding the Disney Princesses.”

In “Disney Princess: My Fairytale Adventure,” players will take on the role of an apprentice to the Fairy Godmother and will accidentally set off a series of events that cause friendly Sprites to transform into mischievous Imps.  The chaotic Imps make their way into the worlds of Ariel, Belle, Cinderella, Rapunzel and Tiana, and players must pursue the Imps into each Princess kingdom to prevent them from causing any harm.  With the use of their magic wand, they’ll need to turn the Imps back into their original Sprite form, and return them to their rightful home in the Magical Kingdom.

Each of the Princess worlds will allow players to explore and interact with familiar Disney characters such as Lumiere, Pascal, Flounder, Gus and other fan favorites who will help guide them through missions and progress though the game.  Quests and mini-games, including platforming, hide and seek, and puzzles, are designed to test the skills of the youngest players and challenge older players.

Players can also customize their avatar and room in the Fairy Godmother’s Castle, utilizing gems that are earned throughout the game to trade for items in the in-game “Wishing Well” store. Outfits, accessories and tiaras can be purchased to dress up avatars, creating hundreds of different combinations. Special items like floor patterns, wallpaper and furniture can be used to personalize and build out each player’s room in the Castle.

FINDING NEMO Storybook & Comic App Review

Finding Nemo Storybook app

To coincide with the 3D theatrical re-release of the 2003 Disney•Pixar hit Finding Nemo and inanticipation of its Blu-Ray DVD debut, Disney Publishing Worldwide has released two exciting NEW apps — Finding Nemo: Storybook Deluxe and Finding Nemo Interactive Comic

I turned my six-year-old son, Adam, loose with the iPad and said, “See what you can do!” He had a blast with Finding Nemo: Storybook Deluxe, because all the activities appealed to him. The story is told in panels, and the animation looks almost like clips from the film. Kids can choose to read each page silently, have the narrator (Albert Brooks, voice of Marlin) read to them, or—and my son really liked this option—record their own voice and play it back. Adam is an early reader, so he played around with it a bit, but then decided he wanted Mom’s voice on there. I think that feature’s great. If parents are away for whatever reason, kids can still hear Mom or Dad read them a bedtime story, or they can practice their own read-aloud skills.

App Review: Disney Publishing’s The Jungle Book!

App Review: Disney Publishing's The Jungle Book!

With the release of the Disney Publishing app Dumbo: Disney Classic, Disney Publishing has opened the vault for some special savings!  From now until September 26, 2012, you can get Walt Disney’s The Jungle Book app for the low price of $1.99, half off of it’s regularly priced $3.99!

The Jungle Book is built upon many of the same features that Bambi is, but it does have some differences.  One nice feature is that you are able to take a picture and put it on the title screen so that you can show who owns the book!  Additionally, you can type their name in the “This book belongs to:” section of the page also.

Disney World Quick Tips – Guy Friendly Disney World Activities

Disney World Quick Tips - Guy Friendly Disney World Activities

It’s no secret that a lot of folks out there think that Walt Disney World is kid’s stuff. I am completely opposed to this way of thinking, and believe there truly is something there for everyone. One of my hardest audiences that I have encountered is my husband – he just doesn’t seem to love WDW like I do, and it took a LOT of convincing to get him to agree to go to WDW again. So the real question in his mind is “what’s in it for me?” Well, check out some of the ‘guy-friendly’ activities below that I am hoping will get him as entranced by the mouse as I am:

Going Fast: Hop onto GM’s Test Track at Epcot for a change to be a ‘test dummy’ as you ride through some ‘unpredictable’ conditions and reach speeds of 60 mph. Travel 0-57mph in just 2.8 sec on the Rock’N Roller Coaster, which as a bonus is Aerosmith themed. Or, if your guy is the more adrenaline junkie/adventurous type, give him the chance to drive (or ride shotgun) in a real NASCAR race car at the Walt Disney World Speedway with the Richard Petty Driving Experience. At speeds up to 140 miles per hour, this is the real deal for NASCAR fans and for those of you who really want to feel the wind in your hair!

Flying High: Go para sailing at Walt Disney World and get a rare view of the resort from 450 ft in the air. Parasailing is just one of the water sports they offer, Waterskiing, Wakeboarding, Kneeboarding, Jet Skiing, and Tubing are also available.
