Disney Quick Tips – Packing Your Carry on Bag

Packing for the Disney Parks can be both stressful and exciting. There are several different thoughts on what to pack in your carry on bag when you fly to Disney:

  1. Pack everything you need for your entire vacation in one bag so you don’t have to deal with bag check.  This is my father.
  2. Pack only in your pockets- keys, wallet, money, ID, chapstick- and carry a book.  This is my husband.
  3. Pack a backpack with as many books, magazines, toys, handheld games, snacks and gadgets as possible.  This is my oldest son.
  4. Pack a little bit of everything, just in case.  This is me.

Several years ago when our family flew to Los Angeles to visit Disneyland our carry on bags basically contained the items listed in #2 and #3.  We were only focused on keeping our son, then age 9, occupied on his first flight.  It worked beautifully on the way out to California.  However, on the return flight home, we had a much different experience.  One flight was delayed which meant the connecting flight was missed and there were no more flights to our destination until the next day.  Look back at the items in #2 and #3… we weren’t prepared for this.  After spending too many hours in the airport and eventually a night in a hotel, I made a list of items that will always be with me on a flight, just in case!

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Legend of Captain Jack Sparrow To Open at Disney’s Hollywood Studios

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Legend of Captain Jack Sparrow To Open at Disney’s Hollywood Studios

A new attraction is coming to Disney’s Hollywood Studios, Pirates of the Caribbean: The Legend of Captain Jack Sparrow will officially open on December 6th, though in normal Disney fashion there will be a soft opening sometime in late November. This new attraction will engage visitors in all the adventure you can imagine that goes with the “Pirates of the Caribbean” film series.

When you visit Pirates of the Caribbean: The Legend of Captain Jack Sparrow, you will journey deep into an eerie lost grotto, where a mysterious pirate skull puts you to the test to see if you have what it takes to set sail with the legendary Captain Jack Sparrow. Along the way, you must face all the perils of a pirate’s life as their favorite moments from the films come to life before your eyes.

It is always a great day at Disney but a new adventure makes it even better! Are you planning on visiting Pirates of the Caribbean: The Legend of Captain Jack Sparrow on your next Walt Disney World vacation?

Flag Retreat Magic Kingdom, photo by Aljon Go

One of the oldest traditions in the Magic Kingdom is the flag retreat. The ceremony takes place in front of the Main Street Train Station, and depending on the time of year, it occurs around 4:45 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. Cast Members prefer to have Veterans and active military to help perform this ceremony. If you are interested check in with Guest Relations on Main Street.

Happy Veterans Day from the Sorcerer Radio Network of sites. Enjoy this clip from my recent trip to Walt Disney World.

Disney Soon to Reveal NextGen Details

Disney’s secrecy about the “Next Generation Experience” has been going on for several years as they protect their technology, future plans and reputation. But, all that is about to come to an end says Walt Disney co. executives that are announcing plans to reveal more concrete details early next year.

“Because we’re in the testing phase to make sure the technology is working the way we both expect and need it to work, we’ve been hesitant to roll out more details to you, and to the public, for that matter,” Disney Co. President and Chief Executive Officer Bob Iger said during a conference call with analysts last week to discuss Disney’s fiscal fourth-quarter earnings. “There has been a fair amount of chatter about the features of this technological advancement or investment, but we’ve been hesitant to give details … before it’s ready for prime time, so to speak.”

One reason that Disney is being cornered to reveal more information is from Wall Street. As “NextGen” is costing more than $1 billion dollars in research and development, analysts are insisting on more information. Currently, Wall Street analysts have only been privy to the very high-level details, regarding “NextGen”, including a new system that will allow guests to reserve ride and show times from home and to bypass hotel check-in desks when they arrive in Orlando. Analysts are pressing for more details as the high cost of this project is at least temporarily eroding profitability. Even the great success of “Cars Land” at Disney California Adventure was offset by higher costs at Walt Disney World.

All this Wall Street murmurings means we are going to get more information on “NextGen” soon, including finding out more about those wristbands! What do you think “NextGen” is going to offer? Are you looking forward to some new technology at Disney?

Brave Bluray Review – Loaded with tons of bonus content!

Brave Bluray Review - Loaded with tons of bonus content!

Landing tomorrow Disney releases the box office hit Brave on Bluray and DVD. An original and thrilling journey set in the ancient and magical Highlands of Scotland, “Brave” follows the heroic journey of the headstrong, young adventurer Merida. Determined to carve her own path in life, Merida confronts tradition and defies an age-old custom that inadvertently unleashes chaos, and forces her to discover the true meaning of bravery.

I received from Disney the Five-Disc Ultimate Collector’s Edition that has Blu-ray 3D + Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Copy all in one package. Disney has really stepped up their game with Dolby Digital 7.1. If your home theater can take advantage of this, this movie is going to blow you away! The sound is so crisp and clean it is like you are really there. I wish I had a 3D tv to be able to check out the 3D version, maybe someday…

Overall the film is very enjoyable. My writer Mike put together a very nice review of the movie here. My daughter who is 6 (almost 7) loved seeing Brave and has since watched it a few more times. For her she can really connect with Merida and has begged me countless times to get her a bow and arrow set for Christmas.

Many people on the net are not crazy about the bonus content I believe Disney loaded it up compared to other Bluray releases.

The Top 5 Nap Spots for Little Ones in Animal Kingdom

DAK
Where to Go?

Back to my series on napping in Disney World.  Sometimes those little legs just need a rest, so here are my top 5 Nap Spots in Animal Kingdom.  Animal Kingdom is a great park to find napping nooks, so keep an eye out.  Here are some of my favorites, in no particular order:

  1. The Tree of Life-In and around the Tree of Life there are tons of benches, many covered by tree canopy. Find a shady spot and cross those fingers.  Usually you will have no problem finding an empty bench, unfortunately you aren’t near any amenities like bathrooms or food.
  2. Rafiki’s Planet Watch-Hopefully taking the Wildlife Express Train will put your little one in the mood to nap.  From then on, find a spot.  Inside the Conservation Station can be a little noisy, but lighting is dim and there is air conditioning.  Older children can explore with another adult in the Affection Station (aka Petting Area).  While bathroom facilities are great, no food options are available except for a snack cart so plan ahead.
  3. Pangani Forest Exploration Trail-You will need to get through the more congested areas, but I find the Gorilla Trail to be a great nap spot.  People are encouraged to speak quietly so as not to scare the Gorillas, so it can be a peaceful place to relax.  Once in there you are cut off from amenities, but there are plenty of exciting sights.
  4. Walkway from Africa to Asia-You should be able to find a quiet corner along this walk.  Look along the river for great benches and a beautiful view.  Check the Flights of Wonder schedule and go in-between shows.  It can be a tad noisy if the crowds are large, but you are centrally located and can walk off the main drag down the smaller paths.  Warning, check the parade schedule as well!
  5. The Boneyard in DinoLand U.S.A.-This one is hit or miss depending on your child’s age.  The Dino Dig area is covered and shaded, if you can get your baby to ignore everything else going on around them.  Any older kids can explore the rest of the Boneyard.  Bathrooms and food opportunities are available right outside, although you are not allowed to bring food into the Boneyard.

The Stuffed Factor: Managing Your Munching on the Disney Dining Plan

The Stuffed Factor: Managing Your Munching on the Disney Dining Plan

I love the Disney Dining Plan!  I love handing over my Key to the World card and being “done” with the bill.  I especially love it when the dining plan is free!  I know the argument exists that “nothing in life is free”, but I operate on the idea that if I didn’t pay for it, it is free to me…even if I did pay a little more for my hotel!  I love the feeling that the free dining plan gives you, it’s like the World’s at your command. ” Le Cellier, no big deal…just swipe that Key to the World card and sure, we’ve made sure to allot for the 2 table service per person”.   It’s living the fine life!   I love seeing that grand total followed by a line declaring the freedom of the dining plan canceling out that dollar amount. I simply leave a tip and hit the road!  Folks, free dining is where it’s at!

All that said, if you grew up like me, then the concept of simply eating at Disney was something foreign.  I grew up in a large family and we did good to make it to Disney.  So, we packed picnics and shared snacks to save a few bucks on meals.  So, the first time I went to Disney as an “adult” with free dining, my cheapskate world was rocked.  I felt like all I did was eat.  Regrettably, there were days where I felt consumed by the food.  I remember saying “we just ate lunch, I am too full for dinner!”  I felt guilty for throwing away food, I still do.  It really is a lot of food.  It takes some skill to make it through a stay at the parks without being stuffed, bloated, and beyond filled.  I have found that it takes a little bit of noshing know-how in order to manage all that food!

Here are my top tips!

Space it out…

Before you are even in the parks, you are making reservations.  It is easy to just click an open time when you are sitting at home making Advanced Dining Reservations months out from your trip.  Just thinking about Disney food gets me hungry!  My imagination doesn’t leave room for my memories of heartburn!  My suggestion is, think out your meal plans and yes, I am talking about your quick service meals as well.  For example, on the day we eat at the Liberty Tree Tavern, we eat an extremely light breakfast in our resort room (like yogurt and fruit or a granola bar) and a light quick service meal, we plan for our large dinner to be at least 5 hours after our lunch time.  When you think through your dining and space out all that food, your tummy will thank you!

Eat light…

I know a lot of people just read that heading and thought, “seriously?”.  So, what I mean by “eat light” , is don’t try to eat really heavy foods for every meal.  For example, if you are eating at Le Cellier for dinner, avoid heavy/greasy/fatty foods.  I prefer to find a light sandwich or salad when I know my reservation meal will include “meat and potato” kinds of foods.  I know a lot of people who complain about quick service meal choices being such a limited selection.  I always challenge theory that by rattling off a handful of unique and tasty quick service options (that’ll be another post).

Walt Disney Company Finishes Fiscal 2012 With Record Revenue And Profit

Walt Disney Company Finishes Fiscal 2012 With Record Revenue And Profit

It was another year of record revenue and profit for The Walt Disney Company as the company showed improved attendance at it’s theme parks, the debut of the Disney Fantasy to the Disney Cruise Line and gains with their ESPN television franchise as well as the success of the superhero megahit “The Avengers” (now the third highest-grossing movie of all time).

Chairman and CEO Bob Iger summed up Disney’s fiscal year 2012 as , “a great year for Disney by every measure — creatively, financially and strategically.”

The Disney theme parks and resorts led among all of the company’s divisions in terms of percentage gains for profit and revenue.  With it’s 4th quarter profit a pleasingly 18% above last year and a whopping 22% increase from the year before as well!

Surprisingly Walt Disney World did not lead the theme park charge.  Attendance at WDW was down slightly for the year, but Disneyland’s attendance (boosted by the opening of “Carsland“) negated any decline at WDW and contributed to a 3% increase in domestic park attendance. However Disney execs are counting on the debut of the new “Fantasyland” which will open officially at the Magic Kingdom on December 6th to help give Walt Disney World a boost in attendance figures.

While no specifics were given Disney bragged of things to come, especially with the recent purchase of Lucasfilms.  Bob Iger did hint that Disney Parks could see more of a Star Wars presence.  Also ongoing projects of note include the expansion of Hong Kong Disneyland, construction of the new Disneyland Shanghai and the rollout of Disney’s “NextGen” system that will help guests plan and book visits to their attractions before they even arrive on property.

How to Maximize Cabin Space on a Disney Cruise

How to Maximize Cabin Space on a Disney Cruise

Disney Cruise line does have some of the largest staterooms of any of the cruise lines HOWEVER when sailing with your family of 4 in a standard sized cabin aboard Disney’s ships you will find yourself crammed for space at times. We had gone on a 5 night on the Dream and a 3 night on the Disney Dream but this summer we went on a 7 night on the Fantasy. Knowing ahead of time how much space our interior cabin would have I wanted to try and maximize that space as much as possible.

I HIGHLY recommend buying these two simple items before setting sail.

How to Maximize Cabin Space on a Disney Cruise

1). An over the door shoe organizer:

This worked BRILLIANTLY for our family! We hung it over the back of our bathroom door and it held everything from swim goggles, sunscreen,  jewelry, lotion, hair brushes and hair product to deodorant  This helped us so much as far as maximizing our space within our state-room. I picked this up at Walmart for around 7.00, money WELL spent for sure!

How many of these Top 10 Disney Must Do’s have you done?

How many of these Top 10 Disney Must Do's have you done?

There is so much to see and do at Walt Disney World that it’s pretty much impossible to experience it all! However, there are a few things that you have to do in order for your Disney World vacation to be complete. Curious? Check out my Top 10 Disney’s Must Do’s and let us know how many you have done!

10. Dole Whip – A Dole Whip is a rite of passage for many Disney guests, and a sweet relief from the heat! They can only be found at a few select spots, such as Aloha Isle at the Magic Kingdom and at Captain Cook’s at the Polynesian Resort; and my personal favorite is the Dole Whip Float. This pineapple flavored soft-serve just has to be experienced!

9. Epcot World Showcase – Epcot has lots for guests to see and experience; but every guest MUST spend some time at this park’s World Showcase. This part of the park offers various pavilions representing different countries from all over the world. In an afternoon, you can visit little pieces of different nations and experience their culture, history, architecture, products, and food!

8. Kilimanjaro Safaris – This Animal Kingdom attraction offers one of the coolest experiences at WDW, a realistic African safari! You will board a safari vehicle and drive through areas which truly look and feel like the African savanna. Here you will encounter crocodiles, hippos, elephants, lions, giraffes, and much more. Young and old will enjoy!

7. Wear Mouse Ears – Every guest who visits WDW must don their own pair of iconic Mouse Ears and sport them through the Disney parks. It’s part of the Disney experience! So be sure to get your own personalized ears and stroll proudly down Main Street U.S.A. because everyone is a kid again at WDW! Just try not to go broke at Mouse Gears!

You Should Be In Pictures, Disney Photo Pass Pictures That Is!

You Should Be In Pictures, Disney Photo Pass Pictures That Is!

What’s the best way to capture all your favorite Disney Memories? Pictures of course!!

Admit it we have all seen it happening or even done it ourselves…Stopping on Main Street, leaning over the rail by the flower gardens in Epcot, bending to get that silly shot on the Jedi Cruiser outside Star Tours, or how about stooping to get that little gecko hanging out in Animal Kingdom all in hopes of getting that one time million dollar shot! We all have those pictures we cherish, like ones of our favorite hotel that reminds us of a quiet morning that made it seem like we had the place to ourselves, or the one of the kiddos taking a nap in the stroller, or how about the animals on the Kilimanjaro Safaris come on admit it you have 15 pictures of the same elephants playing in the mud 😉 But one thing I always noticed is that I may have gotten some great random shots but the family pictures for the most part were always missing something… ME!

Now don’t get me wrong I love being behind the camera, in front of, well not so much. That said though family pictures at Disney are always our favorites, in front of Cinderella’s Castle, Spaceship Earth or that special picture with the main mouse himself! Whichever it is, it’s nice when everybody can flash their pearly whites and say Cheese!!

So how does one handle this little problem? Disney Photo Pass of course! We started getting Photo pass in 2006 and have loved it every time and our last trip was no exception! My best friend’s family was joining us this trip and it was a couple of years in the making. Her family had never been to Disney and wanting to capture every moment for them I knew from the get go that Disney Photo Pass was a must! So many amazing family photos, character shots, ride & dinner photos that was well worth the price and yes even the time it may take to get the picture snapped was so worth it when we got our disk of almost 450 pictures! Group shots that wouldn’t have happened are now trip favorites and have since been made into 8×10 and are hanging up on the wall.
