Why I Love my Disney Rewards Visa

disneyvisa

I have a Disney Visa card very similar to the ones shown above, only mine is extra special.  Why?  Because mine also says “Cardmember Since Day 1” and, under my name, it also says “Charter Cardmember”.  If memory serves me right, we got the offer to become charter members of the Disney  Visa not long after our first family trip, when we took our then recently-turned-5-year-old daughter for her first visit.  It seemed silly to turn down the  chance to earn Disney rewards simply for spending money that we would be spending anyway, so we went for it.  And I’m so glad we did!

That little 5 year old girl is now 19.  And, since that first visit, we’ve added two more children to our family. We’ve taken them to visit Walt Disney World as often as possible.  And, we have our Disney Rewards Visa card to thank for it!

On our first few visits after becoming Visa cardholders, we were so proud to be able to purchase our Disney tickets for our entire stay using the points we had accumulated on our card.  Now, years later, we can say that we have paid for our entire visit using our Rewards.  Pretty amazing when you consider that we are a family of 5 who has no choice but to stay in a moderate resort, and we like to  stay at least 8 nights!

So, how do we do it?  I have to give full credit to my husband.  He’s a “finance guy”.  (Me, personally, I hate even talking about finances!)  But, essentially, we use our Disney Visa Card like a debit card.  We use it for ALL our purchases (and I do mean “all” – I rarely have cash on me).  Each time we use it, we mark it in our checkbook (just like we would a debit card purchase).  This way, we are sure to never spend more money than we have; and we pay our bill off each month (sometimes even bi-weekly, because my hubby is hyper like that).

The points add up pretty fast.  1 point per $100 spent means that, if you’re anything like me, each trip to Walmart will earn you at least one point!

Recently, Disney introduced an upgrade – the Premier Disney Visa.  We really weighed the options earlier this year, and decided that it would be in our best interest to upgrade.  I would highly encourage you to sit down with pen and paper and do some calculating before making this decision for yourself.  Why?  Because this card includes an annual fee of $49.95.  Sure, you’ll be earning 2% at gas stations, grocery stores, restaurants and several Disney locations (as opposed to the normal 1% with the regular Rewards Visa); but unless you plan on charging enough to earn you at least that much back in rewards points, it’s probably not worth it.

There are other perks involved with having a Disney Visa Card also.  You can check them out and find out how to get your own Disney Visa card here.

rewards card

When you’re reading to spend those points, simply call Visa and have them issue you a Rewards card. You’ll notice in the picture of my personal rewards card, above, that the Rewards do expire.  You’ll want to take this into consideration when ordering your card, and requesting the number of points you’d like added to it.

We love traveling with our card and using it for purchases at the various stores on Disney property.  We also love that we can use our Rewards at local Disney Stores and at DisneyStore.com.  In fact, I used the rest of my Rewards (that were set to expire) to order a few more Christmas gifts for my kids this year.  (If you’re curious what gifts I chose, you can find out at my personal blog.)

So, what about you?  Do you have a Disney Visa?  The original Rewards one or the new Premier?  Do you like it as much as I do?

If you’re new to the Disney Visa and have any questions, I’d be happy to try to answer them.  Leave a comment!

Disney California Adventure was a big winner, as Cars Land was named best new theme park land, while Radiator Springs Racers and Carthay Circle Restaurant and Lounge were tops in the new attraction and new theme park restaurant categories, respectively. Also recognized was our new resort in Hawai‘i, Aulani, which was named top themed hotel resort.

Additionally, “Glow with the Show” Mickey Mouse Ears received a Judges Choice Award in the retail category, while the Brass Ring Award for Innovative Training Program was awarded to the Disneyland Resort’s Cast Showcase, which prepared and educated cast members for the relaunch of Disney California Adventure.

Disney Cruise Line received several awards this year. Readers of top travel publications like Porthole Cruise Magazine and Conde Nast Traveler held annual Readers Choice surveys, placing it first in several categories, including top cruise line (large ship category), best spa facilities, best children’s programs and most family-oriented cruise line. Disney Cruise Line also took top honors in Travel + Leisure Magazine’s World’s Best Awards, and industry news organization Seatrade awarded Disney Cruise Line its 2012 Environmental Initiative Award for minimizing the impact on the environment.

And finally, Amusement Business, a publication that covers amusement park news and trends, named Disney California Adventure “2012 Park of the Year.” You can read more about the honor on the Disney Parks Blog.

The Odd Life of Timothy Green Blu-ray Combo Pack Review

timothygreen

The Odd Life of Timothy Green is what I consider to be one of the best films of the year and is now available to own on Blu-ray, DVD, and Blu-Ray Combo pack.  This truly touching story is a must for your collection!  This movie is magical, emotional, and heartwarming and you can get your copy today!

In one sense, this story is as farfetched as possible, but in the same breath, it is absolutely believable.  If you’ve never seen the movie, I don’t want to give away too much of the plot.  It is so good…I can’t spoil it for you, but I’ll give you a little bit of the plot.

The Story:

Cindy and Jim Green live in the perfect small town.  They have what some would consider the perfect life in small town USA.  It seems the only thing that keeps the Greens from their dream life is a child.  After multiple attempts to have a baby, the Green’s leave the doctor’s office broken-hearted.   One disappointment after another has left this couple hopeless.  They decide to accept reality and move on with life, but not before they dream up their perfect child, writing down the attributes and qualities he would have, placing them in a box,  and symbolically burying this dream in their backyard garden.  The twist happens when that buried dream comes to life in the form of Timothy Green, a quirky, lovable, conglomeration of the all the Green’s could ever wish or hope for.  Timothy’s odd life changes his parents, his community, and everyone who crosses paths with him.  I won’t spoil the ending, but I will say, break out the tissues for this happy/sad/hopeful/magical/_________ (you fill in the blank), masterpiece!

Top 5 Reasons to Visit Trails End Restaurant

trails end

Trails End Restaurant is a home-style, frontier themed buffet located at Disney World’s Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground. While often overlooked, Trails End is one of my favorite restaurants and retreats at the resort.

Here are my Top 5 reasons why!

5. Arcade-I know this may not sound like a big deal, or even a plus, but for parents with school-age kids, you know it is! Tucked near the back of this restaurant is a great little arcade, so the noise and craziness is kept away from those dining. I think it’s great because if the adults are still eating, or are wanting to relax before heading back to the Magic Kingdom, the kids can entertain themselves!

4. Setting-As Trails End is located at the Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground, it offers a cozy, rustic setting! It is a buffet, but unlike many at WDW, it doesn’t offer characters. While this may sound like a con, it’s not! This buffet is rarely as crazy and chaotic; and when I eat here with my family, I feel like we’re enjoying a comfy family meal, but we don’t have to do the dishes here! Also be sure to pay attention to the old stove and other surfaces used for the buffet, it definitely adds to the old-fashioned, pioneer feel.

Club Penguin Kicks off 6th Annual Charity Program in #1 Virtual World for Kids

coins

Club Penguin players are changing the world through online play this holiday season as part of the sixth annual Coins for Change event. Running from December 20 to January 2, the Coins for Change program helps players celebrate the true meaning of the holidays by donating the virtual coins that they earn playing games online in Club Penguin to real-world causes that matter to them. For this year’s event, Club Penguin will host the biggest virtual bake sale ever, with players baking millions of in-game cookies and then buying cookies using their virtual coins to determine where Club Penguin will contribute its annual $1M USD donation.

Penguins can participate in the virtual bake sale by visiting the all new bakery and cooking up three different kinds of cookies to benefit Coins for Change. At the end of the event, players’ virtual donations from the bake sale will serve as votes to determine how Club Penguin will divide its $1M USD contribution among the pre-selected charitable projects.  The votes determine the percentage of donations made in three areas: providing medical help, building safe places and protecting the earth.

To reward players for participating in Coins for Change, when they virtually buy the special bake sale cookies, they will be transformed into new holiday characters for a short period of time. All players can transform into toy cars, while members are rewarded by transforming into reindeer puffles and ‘frost bites,’ which allow them to temporarily freeze in-world items.
