Disney Helping Kids Shine with 1.5 Million Donation

Disney Donates

Showered in red and gold confetti and sharing the stage with Mickey Mouse, Goofy and Disney Cast Members, representatives from 59 Central Florida organizations and school districts received more than $1.5 million today as part of the Disney Helping Kids Shine grants program.

As part of Disney Helping Kids Shine Grants program, they awarded the money to organizations and school districts that have a positive impact on approximately 70,000 thousand children in the community. They do that through programs that inspire creativity, encourage compassion and promote the health and well-being of families.

To date, Walt Disney World has awarded approximately $15 million in Disney Helping Kids Shine grants to benefit local nonprofit organizations.

Silver Bullet Productions Fined $61,445 For The Lone Ranger Set Death

LR

Last September, a crew member on the set of ‘The Lone Ranger‘, Mike Bridger, tragically died by drowning in a water tank. At the time, little was known about what exactly happened, but what we do know is that he was diving alone while doing work on the tank. But now OSHA, or Occupational Safety and Health Association for California, has gonna after the production company Silver Bullet, for Bridger’s death. They’re fining the company for four large violations, and six smaller, less serious ones, amounting to the sum of $61,445. The four serious violations include failing to obtain Bridger’s medical records, not having a standby diver for Bridger during the dive, letting Bridger dive without a tether, and Bridger diving without a partner.

It’s a very sad story, and it seems as if any of these steps had been followed, his death could have been easily avoided. It’s always terrible when someone loses their life over things of this nature, and all I can hope that the production company, Silve Bullet Productions, will learn from this and will make sure things like this won’t happen on their next film shoot. Things like this should always be more carefully orchestrated. ‘The Lone Ranger’ stars Johnny Depp, Armie Hammer, Helena Bonham Carter, and Tom Wilkinson. It is directed by Gore Verbinski, and is due to be released July 3, 2013.

Stars of “Top Gun” Together Again for Disney-Pixar’s “Planes” Movie

planes-bravo-echo-slice

Have you heard about “Planes,” another new Disney movie, coming out later this summer? It is designed to be a spin-off of the popular Disney- Pixar “Cars” movies. Disney-Pixar’s “Planes” is scheduled to make its theatrical debut in 3D on August 9, 2013. Disney-Pixar’s “Planes” will tell the story of “Dusty” (voice of Dane Cook) who is a prop plane who dreams of becoming a racing champion, despite his fear of heights.

The voices of Val Kilmer and Anthony Edwards who co-starred in “Top Gun” will be reunited when they play the voices of “Brave” and “Echo” in the upcoming Disney-Pixar’s “Planes.” Brave and Echo are  a pair of strong F-18 fighter jets who are both part of a team called the Jolly Wrenches. The movie’s trailer even reveals a few moments that appear to reference some of the stunt work originally seen in “Top Gun.”

“Anthony and I were such great rivals in ‘Top Gun,’ we always had so much fun on set,” Kilmer admitted. “And I’ve always thought so highly of Anthony, especially with his success on ‘ER.’ So it was really great to find out that we would work together again on ‘Planes.'”

Where to Start- A Guide for the First Time Guest

sc

Visiting Walt Disney World as a  fist time guest can be really overwhelming, but have no fear, I am here to guide you through the process. When planning your first trip to WDW you may find yourself wondering how you can possibly see and do it all. The answer to that is simple; it is not possible. You need to plan a few things to do, see, and experience so you do not get worn out and really get to enjoy your trip!

The first thing you need to do when you arrive at your resort is to obtain a “First Visit” pin for each member of your party. You can do this at your Disney Resort check in or at guest relations at any of the parks. By wearing this pin not only will you experience a bit of extra magic, but cast members are able to recognize that you may not be familiar with everything and are likely to offer tips, suggestions, advice, and directions. Do not be ashamed to wear the pin! Look around, I promise you there are TONS of other guests wearing pins of some sort!

When you arrive at the parks, arrive early and arrive with a plan! I suggest doing a bit of homework before you get to Orlando. Decide which rides are the most important to your family. These rides should become your must do’s! I suggest having each member of your party pick 2 attractions per park that they MUST experience. You can use a service such as Touring Plans to determine the best order in which to see your top picks. Also be sure to check out some park maps to get a better idea on what to expect and to do…

Between park hopping, eating, meeting the characters, and seeing the shows your body can get awfully tired. I see too many first timers stretching themselves to the limit. It is ok to take a break, in fact, if you are staying at a Disney Resort taking a break is almost as much fun as being in the parks. The themed pool areas and relaxing rooms are all part of the experience! Enjoy it!

Disney World to Host First-Ever ‘A Walk Around The World’ Charity Walk

4 parks

This fall, the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida will be the venue to For A Cause, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that orchestrates multi-day charity walks in vacation destinations. This group is unique in that they allow participants to walk for the charity of their choice. The “A Walk Around The World” event will be a walk-only fundraiser that can only accommodate 50 participants. It is scheduled to occur November 14-18, 2013. Over the course of three days, participants will average walking ten miles each day. Their course will take them through Disney World resorts, water parks, and theme parks.

“There are so many die-hard WDW fans out there who are going to love the idea of visiting their favorite theme park while walking to raise money for the nonprofit of their choice,” according to Robert Webber, president of For A Cause. “In years past, For A Cause participants have traveled to castles in Europe and trekked miles throughout historical destinations, but this is the first time they’ll be given a chance to visit Cinderella’s castle and walk miles throughout a fantasy destination. It’s going to be some serious fun — the Walk will be both magical and meaningful. If your feet get a little tired, you can just hop on one of the enchanted rides and take a break!”

Planning a Disney Vacation in Less than Six Months

Disney Countdown 2

Planning a Disney vacation in less than six months is doable with a little bit of advice.  For some reason, our family notoriously books Disney vacations with less than six months to plan.  We talk about it, and find ourselves using the phrase, “Next year when we go to Disney….”, but we don’t actually make a full commitment and book a rom until typically less than six months out.  For some people, that really puts a wreck in their touring plans…..and don’t even think about ADRs!  I mean, you have to be up at the crack of dawn on your 180 day mark to get any sort of good reservation….right?  Well, maybe so, but it’s not impossible to plan a Disney vacation when your arrival is less than six months away.  Today I want to share with you my tips for getting your vacation together, alleviating stress, and having a magical time.

1.  Look if there are any possible ADRs available for your time frame.  It is certainly preferable to book your dining 180 day s out from your trip.  But, there are often reservations still available.  I suggest looking to see what is available because that will help you decide if you want to take part in the Disney Dining Plan.  With this Dining Plan, you get one sit down meal per person in your party per day.  You don’t want to add this to your package, if you know there aren’t going to be any reservations avaialable.

Westwood High School Loses Thousands in Stolen Equipment near Disneyland

dl

Unfortunately, there’s been more trouble at the Disneyland Resort in California this week. The worst part is that a hero has not come to the rescue to help this situation yet.

The Westwood High School Show Choir traveled to the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, California this week for a competition. While performing there, their equipment truck and trailer were stolen from the parking lot of their hotel. Westwood High School Show Choir  Director Tom Gerking is hoping that their insurance will cover the tens of thousands of dollars in belongings and equipment that was stolen. Although it was not released if the group was staying at one of the three Disneyland Resort hotels, the group was staying in the Anaheim, California area. Hopefully, the police will be able to find whoever took their stolen equipment and they will be returned to their rightful owners soon!

Did you catch the article earlier this week about a high school senior who helped save a toddler by performing CPR? Sara Jewell, a high school senior from Taft High School, was also performing at the Disneyland Resort when she heard a mother call for help near the Dumbo ride. You can read the full article here.

Honoring Our Heroes

header

I am fortunate to have close friend’s who are military families. It’s always such an honor for me to help plan their Disney vacations! As such, I’ve become very familiar with the Disney Military Discount Offers. Honoring our Heroes is one way Disney can give back to those that are serving and/or have served. It’s an incredible feeling when I speak to one of our military families to answer any questions. I love being able to help Disney in Honoring our Heroes! It’s truly one of the greatest parts of my job!! I am becoming my own Military Disney Vacation expert, with a lot of help of course.

As we all know, those serving our country don’t get to be home often enough. It’s truly awesome that when they come home for leave that they have time to spend with their families. What could be better than spending that time at Disneyland or Disney World! Disney makes it a real possibility for them all.

I realized though that there may not be a lot of information out there for our heroes and their families on what is available to them. Disney truly wants to Honor Our Heroes, the loyal men and women of all the branches of the military, active and retired, as well as their families. This includes all our heroes in all branches of service, reservists, Coast Guard and National Guard included. There are some ‘rules’ that need to be followed, but none too complicated that I’ve experienced. It’s simply a matter of finding the dates that work and speaking with a Disney Specialist to get you set.
