Disabled Man Won Thousands in Lawsuit After Being Stuck on Disneyland Ride

its-a-small-world_alt disneyland

Disneyland has had lots going on this week and there’s still more Disneyland news coming! A disabled man has won a lawsuit against the Disneyland resort awarding him $8,000 this week.

Jose Martinez, a fifty-two year old paraplegic resident of Los Angeles county, went to the amusement park with his wife on November 27, 2009. The couple reported enjoying their time at Disneyland until they decided to ride the infamous “It’s a Small World.” While their boat was leaving the goodbye tunnel, the ride temporarily stopped moving, but the music kept playing. Cast members began removing other guests from the ride, but due to his disability, cast members were unable to help him exit the ride. The fire department was not called immediately to come assist the guest in exiting the ride so the man sued the Disneyland Resort. Martinez filed his lawsuit in the U.S. District Court in Santa Ana, California. The court awarded the man $4,000 for negligence and $4,000 related to other access violations this week.

New ‘Iron Man 3’ Monorail Spotted at Disney World

ironman3 monorail

Are you a fan of the Iron Man movies? If so, you’re going to love the new ‘Iron Man 3’ monorail wrappers at the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida! The newest monorail wrapper was first seen this weekend at Walt Disney World. Disney fans have even nicknamed the new monorail, the “Iron Man-orail.”

On one side of the monorail, you can see Iron Man flying down the side, who is being played by Robert Downey, Jr. The other side of the monorail displays Col. James “Rhodey” Rhodes, who is being played by Don Cheadle, in a newly redesigned armor resembling the Iron Patriot armor from the Marvel comics. The monorail also features the brand “Stark Industries” around the pilot’s cabin on the right side of the monorail. In the Iron Man movies, Stark Industries is the company that is owned by Iron Man’s alter ego, Tony Stark.

Top 5 Overlooked and Underestimated: Disney World’s Magic Kingdom Edition

mainst

Have you ever talked with someone who is still fresh with the “post Disney glow” only to realize that they missed out on some pretty amazing Disney Stuff?  I’m always shocked when they didn’t even realize such a thing existed! I have a couple of spots that I always hit, no matter what and it is really hard for me to understand how anyone could pass them up!  These personal favorites may not seem like much to everyone, but these are my top picks for overlooked and underestimated, Magic Kingdom edition.

Main Street USA Train Station

I have a 3 year-old nephew who is crazy for trains.  I’ll take that back, he’s crazy for anything that moves- engines, wheels, tracks, steering wheels, axles  he does them all!  So, you can bet that we do our fair share of time on the Walt Disney World Railroad.  For our family, the  train is a must.  Sadly, I will say that I often find myself hurrying through the Main Street USA Train Station in an attempt to board for a scenic tour around the Magic Kingdom.  There are some really neat things in that station, including functioning mutoscopes (moving picture show), historical sights, a wonderful resting spot/parade viewing spot, and of course a beautiful shot of Cinderella Castle and Main Street USA.  Take a little time and enjoy what the Main Street USA train station has to offer.

Swiss Family Robinson Tree House

Okay, so I’m sure some of you are thinking like I think…how could you miss the Swiss Family Tree House?  I’m right there with you!  I always stop by when I hear that infectious Swisskapolka tune!  As impossible as it may seem,  I actually think that this beloved tree can sometimes get lost in the shuffle.  Perhaps it’s the distraction created by the lure of Dole Whips at Aloha Isle?  Maybe guests are zooming straight for the more popular attractions like Pirates of the Caribbean?  Maybe it’s the camouflaged effect of the tree’s craftsmanship?   Maybe it’s because typically this is a walk on type of attraction with little to no wait?  No matter what the source might be, this attraction is often neglected.  I love the charm of the story and the feel of the attraction.  As a little girl, I was always intrigued by the ingenuity of this shipwrecked family (who are we kidding, I am still mesmerized by this fictional tale)!  I simply can’t skip taking the grand tour and you shouldn’t either!

Disney and IMAX Team Up For New 3D Space Film

IMAX

Two of my favorite things are coming together for a truly epic experience. Walt Disney Pictures and IMAX are teaming up to create a new 3D film about space, specifically set for IMAX. The film, set to be made by IMAX filmmaker Toni Myers is still untitled, but the fact that it’s an IMAX film, co-produced by Disney, is so very exciting to me. I’m a huge movie buff, and going to see films in IMAX is usually second to none for any moviegoing experience I’ve had. Films come to life in a whole new way on IMAX screens, especially ones shot for the format. I really can’t wait to see what the movie is about, and experience it in a whole new way.

This isn’t the first time that Disney and IMAX have teamed up together. The relationship between the two companies goes back as far as ‘Fantasia 2000’, and more recently, ‘Oz the Great and Powerful’, so it’s good to see the two companies still working together. Hit the jump for the full press release and leave your thoughts below. Are you excited for a new 3D IMAX film about space?

Atlantis: The Lost Empire and Atlantis: Milo’s Return coming to Blu-Ray and DVD in June

Disney’s Atlantis: The Lost Empire and Atlantis: Milo’s Return will debut on  in a combo pack on DVD and Blu-Ray on June 11.  The combo pack will include both films on a single Blu-ray disc plus each film on individual DVDs.  Here’s what Disney has to say about the movies:

Set a course for adventure as Milo Thatch and his fearless crew dive into the mysteries of the sea.  The group’s underwater expedition brings them face-to-face with gigantic sea monsters, spectacular spirits and the mythical land of Atlantis while they discover the power of friendship and teamwork.  Loaded with thrills and stunning visual effects, this sensational 2-Movie Collection takes audiences on an unforgettable voyage they’ll want to experience over and over again!

I saw the first Atlantis movie back when it came out in 2001 and thought it was a great movie.  Unlike most of the Disney movies, I only saw it one time, so I’m looking forward to seeing it again.  Now that I have two boys, I can’t wait to get it (and the sequel, that I never saw) to share with my kids.   I  think they will love the action packed, adventure movies.

The 3-Disc Blu-ray combo will be available June 11 for $29.99.  Atlantis: The Lost Empire is rated PG in the U.S. and Canada and Atlantis: Milo’s Return  is rated G in the U.S. and Canada.

High School Senior Uses CPR to save a Toddler at Disneyland

saraj_1363992328047.jpg

Even at the happiest place on Earth, things can sometimes go wrong.  A high school senior from Taft High School became a hero after using CPR to help save a toddler at Disneyland. The Taft High School choir performed at the Disneyland Resort in California and then allowed students to spend the rest of the day in the park. After their performance in front of judges, Sara, a high school senior, was in line for the Dumbo ride when she heard a mother call for help. Sara, a lifeguard with CPR training, rushed to help the mother. Sara stated that she jumped a fence and informed the mother that she was a lifeguard. With the assistance of a nurse, Sara performed CPR on the toddler. The toddler then coughed up spaghetti. Sara later said this was the first time she had ever had to use her CPR training. Disney rewarded the teen with three Fast Passes to skip the lines at three different rides.

I cannot imagine being that panicked mother with a toddler desperately needing medical attention. Thank goodness for everyday heroes that are willing to help out when necessary! Have you heard about Disney’s efforts to recognize their employees that are saving lives or preventing serious injuries? Disney has a special award, the Disney Heroes Award, that is given to employees for their actions both inside and outside of the workplace. Twelve employees were recognized this month alone for their courageous actions, including six employees of the Disneyland Resort in California for performing CPR on a fellow co-worker!

You can read more about it here.

Have you ever seen someone come to the rescue to help another guest at a Disney park?

Minnie Mouse received a Lanvin makeover at Disneyland Paris

Did you know that Minnie Mouse has over 200 different outfits? Well, she’s just added one more costume to her wardrobe! Minnie Mouse received a Lanvin makeover at Disneyland Paris. Minnie Mouse has moved beyond her red and white polka dot dress to a more mature look. Lanvin’s designer Alber Elbaz created a long-sleeve blue frock topped with a red crown for Minnie to model at special events at Disneyland Paris. Minnie Mouse displayed her new look on the runway at a catwalk show on Saturday at Disneyland Paris.

“Walt Disney was the one that actually designed Minnie. It’s the first time an actual designer has come into the picture and designed a dress for her,” said Elbaz. “It was a great challenge and responsibility to do. I just wanted her to shine… I wanted to give her a crown in red, and the dress in blue, (a signature) for Lanvin.”

The dress seemed to get approval from the celebrity-filled front row including actress Virginie Ledoyen and model Natalia Vodianova. However, not all fans are crazy it. This new look won’t completely replace Minnie’s classic dress though. She will still don that for normal events at the park.

Minnie did at least keep her curvy figure with Lanvin’s design unlike Barney’s New York’s images that had attempted to lengthen the beloved character.

“We’re not here to transform people,” Elbaz explained. “We love her the way she is.”

What do you think of Minnie Mouse’s new look? Do you prefer this over her classic red and white polka dots?

Are you ready to plan your next Disney parks vacation? I’d love to help!

Fort Wilderness Cabins Make For A Perfect Family Vacation

CabinOutside

I have talked about how great Fort Wilderness is, and it’s a place I spent many happy vacations as a kid. One thing that wasn’t so great about those vacation was the two days we spent in the car each way as we towed our camper from Upstate NY to Disney and back. Do I understand why my parents did it? Of COURSE – it was a HUGE money saver, as we didn’t have to pay for airfare and could eat many of our meals at the campsite, and the cost of renting a campsite is nothing compared to that of a resort or hotel.

While I was on those vacations, I always wondered what it would be like to stay in one of the Fort Wilderness Cabins – a great alternative to those who want a ‘home away from home’ but don’t want to tow their camper across the country to get it.
