MagicBands to be used for Extra Magic Hours at Walt Disney World

magic band

It seems as though Disney will now be using MagicBands for entry into the parks for Extra Magic hours.

Hollywood Studios will be testing the use of MagicBands for entry into the park for Extra Magic Hours later on this week.

On October 25, 27, and November 2, guests will be required to scan their MagicBand to a handheld device carried by cast members outside of the turnstiles. Once they are validated as resort guests, then they can enter through the turnstiles.

Once your are inside the park, the MagicBands will again be used to scan to a handheld device before you get into every attraction.

Resort guests without MagicBands can still use their Key to the World Card.

Disneyland Cast Members Helps Build Fifth KaBOOM! Playground in Orange County

Kaboom Build 1 613x408
Kaboom Build 1 613x408

DL

Yesterday more than 100 Disney VoluntEARS and I joined folks from the city of Anaheim and the Anaheim Family YMCA for a KaBOOM! playground build at Modjeska Park. This was the fifth Orange County KaBOOM! project that the Disneyland Resort has been part of since 2011.

It is easy to see why these projects are a favorite among our Disney VoluntEARS. I think they remind us of the reason Disneyland was built nearly 60 years ago … as a place where children and their parents can play and spend quality time together.

It is amazing what a group of determined volunteers can accomplish in such a short amount of time. In just a matter of hours, a play area was filled with colorful, brand new equipment that children will be able to enjoy for years to come. And as we put the finishing touches on the slides and swing sets, I could already imagine the smiles and laughter that will soon fill this park.

KaBOOM! has a goal to build a great place to play within walking distance of every child in America, and Disney has a dream of helping children and families create magical memories that last a lifetime. It’s a perfect match and a great win for our community. It was a hard, but fun day’s work for all who volunteered, and a lasting gift that will make this neighborhood a better place to live.

I’m so proud of our Disney VoluntEARS for donating their time for this terrific project … and grateful to have an organization like KaBOOM! to lead the way!

Drink Around the World Showcase – Japan Pavilion

2013 08 13 12.30.49
2013 08 13 12.30.49

Epcot Japan pavilion

Japan offers guests participating in a Drinking Around the World Showcase a unique drinking experience. From frozen beer (yes, you read that right) to Japanese soda and even plum wine, there is really something for every DAWS-goer visiting the pavilion. It’s very easy to rack up lots of DAWS points in the Japan Pavilion between the unique drinks and eats you’ll find at the kiosks, quick service and table service locations. Don’t forget the Mitsukoshi Merchandise Store! There are tons of food & drink to explore there too!

If you’re looking for a cool treat, you’ll want to visit Kabuki Cafe, located closest to the American Adventure Pavilion. Not only can you get the Japanese soda here ($3.25), but you can also score some Plum Wine ($6.00) which is available both hot and cold—a nice option when it’s chilly out. Though non-alcoholic, the Kaki Gori ($3.50) here is a must do! It’s one of the more unique cold treats in the World Showcase and appeals to all ages—DAWS drinkers and non-drinkers alike. This shaved ice treat comes topped with fruit syrups and include: strawberry, melon, cherry, Mikan (tangerine), and rainbow. You can also add special toppings like sweet milk, sweet strawberry or sweet strawberry for an extra $1.00 each. It’s a great way to mix and match. Want a frozen drink that’s really unique and alcoholic? Try the frozen beer served here for $8.00. It is Kirin beer topped with a Kirin beer foam. This will sure to be a conversation starter in your DAWS excursion!

Kirin Frozen Beer Japan

Sake more your speed? Try the Sake bar outside of the pavilion located near the Mitsukoshi Merchandise Store. You can get more varieties of Sake and your choice of hot and cold. Perhaps the most sought after drink is the Tokyo Sunset ($8.00) which includes coconut rum, peach schnapps, banana liqueur and pineapple juice. It’s fruity deliciousness will delight you, and the look of this drink certainly brings visions of a real Tokyo sunset! You can also enjoy the Pineapple Sake Cocktail which tastes very similar to a Pina Colada.

There are also many different stands and kiosks in this pavilion that offer  a variety of unique snacks, like various gummy snacks, uniquely flavored potato chips (check out the prawn chips!) and staples like Wasabi peas. This is a terrific DAWS location to wander, sip a few cocktails and try different things. Head into the Mitsukoshi Merchandise Store and you’ll find an array of food items, many of them easily consumed on the go, and even a small Sake tasting bar! Looking for a sake souvenir? Skip the sake purchases here and buy some at your local liquor store at home.

For a quick bite to eat, head over to Katsura Grill for a filling quick service meal.  You can get a variety of sushi rolls here, as well as traditional Udon noodles ($8.99-$10.99). The teriyaki ($9.99-$12.99) as well as Japanese curry ($9.99) are also big hits. This isn’t a vegetarian friendly location, so if you’re looking for items that cover a special diet, head to the table service locations for more options. This location also carries Kirin Ichiban ($7.50) and Plum wine or Sake ($5.75).

For a family meal or for dinner and a show, head on over to Teppan Edo for a full Teppanyaki meal. Think Benihana with a twist! This location carries all of the traditional Teppanyaki items, including miso soup, salad with ginger dressing and more. This is a highlight for any guests visiting the pavilion, and it’s a terrific spot for a DAWS table service meal.

Looking for something authentic but a little less “showy”? Head to Tokyo Dining for their extensive sushi menu and other traditional Japanese offerings. This is the perfect Japanese dinner for an adults only crowd or for those wanting to grab a few sushi rolls and some Kirin beer. Thank goodness there’s no Karaoke!

japan epcot

Overall, the Japan Pavilion is the perfect location for guests wanting to experience a full DAWS experience. You can easily score all of your DAWS points in this spot, so be sure to pace yourself and just get a few treats! You won’t want to say “Sayonara” to your evening of Drinking Around the World Showcase without visiting this pavilion! This is a must-do for any DAWS-goers.

Top 10 Best Pin Trading Spots at Walt Disney World

PT logo1 500x290
PT logo1 500x290

Pin Trading Logo 2013

Pin trading has quickly become our favorite activity to partake in while vacationing at Walt Disney World. When we made our first trip as annual passholders in 2010, we really didn’t know a whole lot about pin trading and decided to purchase a few pins to trade after seeing cast members trading pins with guests. Today our collection has grown to nearly 4,000 pins. You could probably say we’re pretty serious traders, but we’re not the ‘walk into Epcot with suitcases full of pins’ serious traders. If you’re new to pin trading, be sure to read the rules and etiquette of pin trading before you begin your pin trading adventure. Over the years we’ve made mental notes of our favorite spots to trade pins, so here are our Top 10 places to trade pins at Walt Disney World.

10. Pin Drum (Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster gift shop, Hollywood Studios) – You’ll normally find cast members trading at all the gift shops attached to rides, but if you make your way to the ride photo purchasing area of Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster, ask a cast member if you can see the pin drum. They usually have it hidden in the back or under the counter. We’ve noticed on recent trips that they don’t replenish/replace pins at the end of the day like they use to, so it’s hit and miss on whether or not you’ll find great pins on the drum.

9. Restaurantosaurus Pin Board (Animal Kingdom) – We’ve caught this board out in different places around/in the restaurant during our visits to Animal Kingdom. The first time they had it in front of the restaurant and on our last trip, there was a cast member standing just inside the restaurant holding the board. They usually only have it out during the first hour or two of lunch hours and we’ve found some great hard-to-find pins on the board before.

8. D-Street (Downtown Disney) – We have a cast member at DisneyQuest to thank for pointing this one out to us during our last trip. D-Street has a pin book that has nothing but Vinylmation pins. If you’re as big of a collector as we are of Vinylmation pins, be sure to stop by the store to see if you spot one that you’re missing. The only caveat is that you can only trade a Vinylmation pin for a Vinylmation pin.

7. Mitsukoshi Department Store (Japan Pavilion, Epcot) – Not all World Showcase countries in Epcot participate in pin trading, but this huge store in Japan never disappoints with the pins they have available for trading. Unlike cast members in other parts of World Showcase, you won’t always see lanyards around the necks of those who are trading in the Japan Pavilion. If you walk towards the very back of the store, ask one of the cast members at the registers to see their pin lanyard. They usually have one or two tucked away into drawers near the registers and since most people don’t know about them, you can usually find newer pins on these lanyards.

6. Resort Pin Boards/Books – Every resort at Walt Disney World has a pin book and/or board. The pin boards are usually found in the resort gift shops and are only brought out at certain times, so be sure to ask a cast member what time they will be trading that day. Unfortunately, there is usually a limit of 1 pin trade per person on these boards instead of the normal 2 trades per person. Some resorts like POP Century or Art of Animation will often have a second pin board in the resort lobby that they bring out at random times and they are usually chock full of great pins. We’ve found that every check-in/concierge desk at the Deluxe resorts also have pin books, so be sure to ask them to view the book – but be sure to wait your turn in line, especially if you go during check-in/check-out.

5. World of Disney (Downtown Disney) – We easily spend 30 mins or more just walking through the store trading pins at the World of Disney store and often make a trip to Downtown Disney at the end of our stay just to trade pins. Every cast member in the store is required to wear a pin lanyard (but you will find the occasional cast member who doesn’t have one), so just imagine having 30+ people to trade with in one location. For those with small children, there are usually quite a few wearing green lanyards that only kids can trade with and my husband usually finds that those lanyards are the ones with the best pins!

4. Frontier Trading Post (Magic Kingdom) – Not only can you purchase great pins at this store, you can also find their unique displays used for pin trading. They have a pin washboard, a pin cowboy hat and even a bear wearing pins – all for your trading pleasure. And to make it even better, you can trade 2 pins on each of these items. The hardest part is usually picking only two…

3. Animal Kingdom Pin Stroller (Stroller Rental) – For the longest time, this was our favorite place to trade pins, as most guests didn’t know it was there. They never have the pin stroller out unless someone else just happens to be viewing pins on the stroller while you’re walking by. You have to ask a cast member to view the pin stroller and the cast member will then go to the back and retrieve the stroller. They usually won’t bring it out if they are super busy though, so be sure you only visit this location late-morning/early afternoon – times when there isn’t a long line of people waiting to rent a stroller. Much like trading at the Frontier Trading Post, the hard part here is picking just two pins to trade.

2. Disney Pin Traders (Downtown Disney) – A pin store is obviously a great place to trade pins, but this one makes it to the top of the list because of one thing – their HUGE pin board. When you walk into the store from the ‘Once Upon a Toy’ area, look to your left and the pin board is hanging on the wall. You probably won’t know it’s a pin board though, as they have it closed and the pin trading logo is on the front of the doors. But if you happen to walk in and catch it open, be sure to jump in line right away. The line often gets long and they will close it off pretty quickly. You’re also limited to only a minute or two to trade, so you really have to start looking for which pins you want to trade for right away and be ready to trade as soon as it is your turn. They do a pretty good job of sorting the pins into different sets so that you can quickly find what you’re looking for (if you’re looking for something in particular). The bad part is that they only have it open a few times a day and they won’t tell you when that is. We’ve usually caught it open sometime between 5-7 p.m. So if you catch it open, consider yourself lucky!

1. Magic Kingdom Bus Area – We discovered this glorious pin board last December as we were walking to our resort bus. They actually had two boards sitting on a bench before you make it to the first bus stop (and close to where the ferry traffic splits off from those walking to the buses). Of course, the location can change and it’s not always out, but just ask a bus driver if you happen to see one standing around helping direct people to their bus. This pin board was so great because it was full of hard-to-find Hidden Mickey’s and many other neat pins that you rarely see on lanyards or other boards. We completed some Hidden Mickey sets after finding this board, so that makes it a winner for us.

There are many places to trade pins around Walt Disney World and of course this list doesn’t include all of those places. What are some of your favorite locations to trade pins?

Disney Chef Add Some Spice to The Latin Food And Wine Festival

Latin Food and Wine
Latin Food and Wine

Latin Food and Wine

Disney Chefs were among the Central Florida culinary experts who cooked up some savory cuisine during the Latin Food and Wine Festival this past weekend in Altamonte Springs. Sponsored in part by Disney, the event drew more than 20,000 wine and food enthusiasts who celebrated and enjoyed the tradition and taste of Latin cooking.

Walt Disney Parks and Resorts supports the Latin Food and Wine Festival as part of the company’s ongoing commitment to diversity and inclusion. The festival, now in its fifth year is produced by the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Metro Orlando and is held at the end of October to celebrate Hispanic Heritage month.

After an exciting two days of delectable dishes, the weekend closed with the Grand Tasting event, which included a cooking demonstration and recipe presentation by Disney Chef Beatriz Candelario, who works at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. As part of the Try it! campaign, which encourages families to try new foods and lead healthier lifestyles, Chef Bea created a healthier version of arroz con pollo especially for the festival attendees.

Try it! is part of Disney Magic of Healthy Living, a company-wide initiative that partners with parents and inspires kids to live healthier lifestyles by making them simple and fun.

Arroz con Pollo(Chicken With Rice)

Walt Disney Parks and Resorts

Serves 10-12

1/2 medium yellow onion, coarsely chopped

5 cloves garlic

1 medium green bell pepper

1 medium red bell pepper

2 tablespoons chopped fresh recao (culantro)

6 sweet peppers (aji dulce), seeds removed

1 tablespoon chopped fresh oregano

4 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro, divided

1/4 cup olive oil

3 pounds skinless, boneless chicken thighs, cut into bite-sized pieces

1/2 cup tomato paste

1/2 cup sliced green olives

1/4 cup drained capers

5 cups vegetable broth

4 cups brown rice

Coarse salt, cracked black pepper, to taste

1. Place onion, garlic, green and red peppers, recao, aji dulce, oregano and 2 tablespoons cilantro in food processor and pulse to a fine chop.  Set aside.

2. Heat oil in a 5-quart saucepot over medium-high heat.  Add chicken and stir for 2 to 3 minutes until browned.

3. Add chopped vegetables, tomato paste, olives and capers, and continue to cook and stir for 6 to 8 minutes until chicken has cooked through.

4. Stir in broth and rice.  Cover and reduce heat to medium to maintain a gentle simmer and cook until the rice has absorbed the liquid, about 10 minutes.

5. Turn the heat to low and cook, covered, for 10 more minutes or until the rice has absorbed all the liquid.

6. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Just before serving, stir in remaining cilantro.

This recipe has been converted from a larger quantity in the restaurant kitchens. The flavor profile may vary from the restaurant’s version.

2014 Free Disney Dining Dates Might be Coming

Hiya! It is your one and only favorite gossip columnist in the whole wide world, Anonymouse! I have some juicy news for you. I know there are many of you that live for the next free dining dates to be announced. Now nothing is official yet but Chippy has been putting the pressure on me to get some inside info, so of course I must deliver.

As you know Disney just released two new discounts for early in 2014, and these are discounts that we already saw coming  due to the Pin Codes that were sent earlier this year.

I have been hearing things floating around that they are starting up again and it is because of the free dining pin codes that are being sent out.

I know everyone asks how do they get a pin code, well the real answer no one really knows. I know there are some strategies that some people say that work and others say they don’t work. I have heard people that go all the time and never get one and then I have heard people that have not gone in 10 years and get a pin code all the time. So no one knows really. Just hope and wish for some pixie dust!

I know of some people that have started getting new  pin codes that are good for Free Disney Dining. The dates are for Jan. 3, 2014 – March 5, 2014.

There are a few resorts that are not included in this round of free dining pin codes, and those are:

The code is good for a minimum three-night stay and a 2 day park ticket with a max 14-night stay.

Don’t forget to sign up for our free dining list here

Anywho that is all the Disney gossip I have right now. For my past gossip articles be sure to check them out here. Got any good gossip/rumors please email me at [email protected] or on my Facebook page.

Marvel Studios Developing New Set of TV Shows

marvel studios logo
marvel studios logo

marvel_studios_logo

A few days, news broke that Marvel is currently shopping a new TV package deal to Netflix, Amazon, and WGN, that would see the studio really upping their game on television. The package is said to include four new TV shows, and one new miniseries. Whoever buys in will have a sixty episode commitment, but at the moment it’s not known if it’s a sixty episode commitment per episode, or if it’ll be sixty episodes between the four new shows.

While we don’t know exactly what characters are involved in the package, speculation is running rampant that this may an a Marvel Knights series, featuring DareDevil, The Punisher, Luke Cage, and the Heroes for Hire, all of which would show the Marvel in a brand new light. While we’re used to seeing the more superhuman side, which we’d still get here, we’d get in on a smaller scale, involving mafias, drug dealers, and the darker underbelly of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. I’m under the impression the shows will all be a build up to the eventual miniseries, much like ‘The Avengers’, which sees all the characters coming together against one foe. My money is on all the heroes coming up against The Kingpin, a formidable villain that could take all these characters to come together and bring down. I’m really hoping that ends up being the case, because it would make for a great series.

Are you excited to see what Marvel will do in this new TV Package? What would you like to see them tackle in the new shows? Let me know in the comments below, only here at Chip and Company!

Top Disney World Souvenir Gift Ideas

PrincessMug
PrincessMug

MickeysMinnies

I don’t know about you, but when I go on vacation, I always have a list of people I want to bring back a little something for – just a little souvenir to let them know I was thinking of them while I was away. So what do you bring back those baby sitters/dog sitters/friends from Walt Disney World? Here’s my top picks for WDW Souvenir gift-giving:

“The Little Things” – In the under $10 souvenir category there are quite a few good ideas – assorted pens/pencils/marker sets, magnets, keychains, decks of cards, washcloths – these are all things that are small, cheap, and best of all – they are actually useful to almost anyone you would give them to

Kitchen Accessories – These are great for any foodie, or really anyone who enjoys spending time in the kitchen. Disney Park souvenir shops offer a wide range of different products to choose from, like wine stoppers, spatulas/whisks/spoons/tongs, cookbooks, pot holders, ice cube trays, and much more

CandyBars

Edible Souvenirs – This might be my favorite category – because who doesn’t love to receive FOOD as a gift?! Especially Disney food (since its only some of the best food ever!). There are plenty of items that will travel well and make it back to your house in one piece (as long as you don’t eat them that is…) – like Mickey Rice Krispie treats, bagged candy, cookies/crackers, fun candy bars, bags of caramel corn, Mickey Pasta, even Disney Fudge can be packed up and transported home as a sweet gift

PrincessMug

Pair A Mug With Their Favorite Drink: There are tons of great Disney mugs to choose from at the Parks – big ones, small ones, travel ones, metal ones, ceramic ones – so you should have no trouble finding one for anyone and everyone on your souvenir list! For an added treat, you can give them their favorite hot beverage along with the mug – Disney Parks has various teas, coffees, and cocoas available for purchase (my personal favorite is the Holiday Cheer coffee – reminds me of Disney and Christmas – yum!), and these would go great with a Disney mug featuring their favorite character, wouldn’t they?

For Kids: There are many choices for the little ones on your souvenir list – Coloring books and crayons/markers, stuffed animals, books, Mickey Ear hat, fun shaped pens/pencils, and much more for them to squeal over and play pretend with

Some Things I DON’T Love Giving As Souvenirs: T shirts – you never can be 100% on people’s sizes, or if they would like/wear the shirt you pick, any toys that make noise (that’s just plain mean to parents ha), Wine/Beer/drinking glasses – these tend to be a lot less sturdy than the Disney mugs, and much more likely to break in transit, and that extends to really anything fragile like glass something that might easily break, and Disney Pins – while I love them and collect them, not everyone does, and if they do, they might already have that particular pin. Mickey Ice Cream Bars also don’t travel too well…seriously though, some food items might melt/crumble/get smushed/break on the trip home – items like those giant lollipops, chocolate, and most items from the bakery case like cupcakes/cookies are probably not going to make it home in one piece

There are SO MANY great souvenirs available at the Disney Parks that it can be overwhelming trying to pick out the ‘perfect one’ for your loved ones back home – so I hope that this list can help you narrow it down, and I would love to hear from you too – what do YOU like to give as Disney souvenirs to those back home?
