Top 5 Walt Disney World Resort Lobbies

WildernessLodge Lobby
WildernessLodge Lobby

DE 1-67 Disney's Wilderness Lodge - Lobby Apr 1994 MRA

I love to resort hop, that’s no secret, and I always find myself visiting the same resorts each trip, largely in part due to the wonderful lobbies (and of course pin trading). When Disney built the resort hotels, they definitely didn’t skimp out on the details of the resort lobbies. Each lobby is uniquely themed to match the resort and the deluxe resorts often feature the best details, but that’s to be expected given how much people pay to stay at those resorts. So, it should come as no surprise that 4 of my top 5 resort lobbies listed below are found at deluxe resorts.

  • Animal Kingdom Lodge I feel like I’m home every time I walk into this resort, even though I’ve never stayed there. We love it so much that we made three trips to AKL just to spend 30 minutes enjoying the atmosphere. When you walk in, you’re met with ambient yellow lighting that just beckons you to take a seat in the lobby and read a book or take a short nap. If you really want to get cozy, walk towards the back of the lobby and you’ll find a fire pit to your right that will keep you nice and warm (and hungry since the smell from Boma permeates throughout the lobby). If you have time, be sure to take a look around the lobby area for all the displays you’ll find related to the African culture. And be sure to take a quick walk down to The Mara to pick up some yummy Zebra Domes.
  • Grand Floridian I’m not someone who likes to get all dressed up and ‘girly’ but I have to admit that when I step foot inside the Grand Floridian lobby, I feel like royalty (and like I’m under-dressed). Saying the lobby is grand is an understatement. No detail was overlooked in designing this lobby – from the marble floors to the birdcage elevator, they all contribute to the grandeur and classiness of the resort. One of my favorite things to do is sit and listen to the big band that plays in the lobby every night – now if that doesn’t make you feel fancy, I don’t know what does!
  • Wilderness Lodge This lobby resembles the Animal Kingdom Lodge lobby quite a bit. Just like AKL, this lobby is definitely a place that makes you feel like you’re home. I’ve never stayed in a mountain cabin or lodge, but walking into this lobby definitely makes me want to do just that. I love the larger than life log pillars and totem poles that make up the interior walls and railings of the lobbies. Being Native American, I also appreciate and enjoy walking around the lobby to view all the Native American artifacts that you’ll find on display throughout the resort.
  • Polynesian The one thing most people notice the second they walk into this resort is the wonderful floral smell that fills the entire lobby. Then of course your attention turns to the sounds from the waterfalls located in the center of the lobby surrounded by lush foliage. It truly feels like you’ve stepped into a resort in the South Pacific.
  • POP Century – This one doesn’t exactly fall into the ‘beautiful’ category that most others do, but if you love history and reminiscing about things of the past, then you should definitely make a visit to POP Century. The lobby area is filled with framed relics of the past decades that will instantly make you remember your childhood and the finer days of our past.

So do you agree with my top picks? If you prefer one that I didn’t mention, be sure to comment below and let me know what makes them special to you?

Universal Orlando Resort Unveils Star-studded Musical Lineup For 2014 Mardi Gras Celebration

MardiGras
MardiGras

MardiGras

Universal Orlando Resort comes alive this spring with its Mardi Gras 2014 celebration, featuring 20 nights of electrifying concerts from the biggest names in music, coupled with the essence of the legendary Bayou bash.

On select nights Feb. 8 through May 31, guests will experience a “N’awlins”-inspired, family-friendly version of Mardi Gras at Universal Studios Florida. The celebration combines unmatched theme park entertainment with delectable Cajun cuisine, authentic New Orleans bands, an awe-inspiring parade and live concerts by some of today’s hottest artists.

This year’s powerhouse musical lineup features a diverse array of talent, from R&B superstar Robin Thicke, whose hit single “Blurred Lines” topped the Billboard chart for a near-record 12 weeks, to UK pop sensation The Wanted, who has sold nearly 10 million albums worldwide, to Latin idol Prince Royce, who reached number one on the U.S. Hot Latin Songs chart with “Corazón Sin Cara.” Also performing is rock band Daughtry, Grammy award-winning Hip Hop artist Nelly, and the classic rock group Foreigner, one of the best-selling bands of all time. For the complete line-up, see below.

Guests can also catch colorful beads by the handful during this year’s parade, which will feature 12 vibrant floats, including three new additions celebrating Jules Verne’s novel, “Around the World in Eighty Days.” All of the exquisitely detailed Mardi Gras floats are engineered by Blaine Kern Artists, the same company that has been hand-crafting floats for the iconic New Orleans celebration since 1947. Plus, guests can visit Universal Studios Florida’s very own French Quarter Courtyard to enjoy authentic Cajun cuisine and see performances by bands pulled straight from Bourbon Street.

The excitement of Universal Orlando’s Mardi Gras celebration is included with admission to Universal Studios Florida, where partygoers can also join Optimus Prime in the fight to save Earth on TRANSFORMERS: The Ride – 3D or visit Springfield, home to The Simpsons, to take an intergalactic spin on Kang & Kodos’ Twirl ‘n’ Hurl. With an upgraded park-to-park ticket, guests will have the opportunity to visit Universal Orlando’s second theme park, Islands of Adventure, and enjoy award-winning attractions like: The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man, The Incredible Hulk Coaster and more.

In addition to two theme parks, Universal Orlando Resort is home to three on-site hotels: Loews Portofino Bay Hotel, Hard Rock Hotel and Loews Royal Pacific Resort, and a fourth on-site hotel, Universal’s Cabana Bay Beach Resort, opening March 31, 2014. And its entertainment complex, Universal CityWalk, offers some of the hottest, most recognizable entertainment experiences in the world.

First Photo of the Marvel Experience Road Show Revealed

The Marvel Experience
The Marvel Experience

The Marvel Experience

A few months ago, Marvel announced they were bringing the the Marvel Universe on the road, with The Marvel Experience, a new road show/attraction that would be coming to cities across the USA in 2014. While we’re still waiting on word of where and when the show will be taking place, we now have our first look at it, which you can see above. The show is said to take place inside this S.H.I.E.L.D. dome, which will span over 80,000 sq. feet, and feature a 4D attraction as the centerpiece of the show. It’ll also include new animated shorts, interactive games, and more, that will lets fans old and new delve into the growing Marvel Universe.

The show sounds so fun and fascinating, and I can’t wait to see how it looks when it’s beginning to roll out. You can guarantee I’ll be going to check it out wherever it’s held, and we’ll be sure to update everyone when dates are revealed. I can’t wait to assimilate myself even further into the Marvel Universe, how about you? Are you excited for the Marvel Experience? Let me know in the comments below!

10 Great Things at Downtown Disney you won’t want to miss!

DTD

I love Downtown Disney.  It’s like being at the best upscale shopping around and it’s all Disney themed.  You can drop some serious cash here, so if your kids have a case of the “gimmes” – BEWARE!

Here are my family’s favorites and why you should check them out.

1.  Goofy’s Candy Company – This is great if you have the dining plan and have snack credits left over at the end of your trip.  Yup, you can use them here!  Isn’t that fun?  Candy and treats for the way home OR gifts for friends back home (if you are sweet like that!)

Goofys-Candy-Company-500x325

2. T-Rex Cafe – My son almost had a heart attack he was so excited to go here.  We only had the dessert volcano as dinner was booked solid – no problem.  Ice cream at 10pm…yes please!  Of course it has tons of dinosaur merchandise.  Little boy heaven.  If you can’t get a reservation through Disney, don’t despair.  Call directly and you will have much better luck – 407828-8739.  (little travel agent tip for you there!)

trex

3. La Nouba by Cirque de Soleil – this theater in the round is spectacular.  If you haven’t ever seen a Cirque show, you should.  It’s unlike anything you have ever seen.

lanouba

4. Lego Imagination Center – Fantastic.  It’s a must-do for us on every trip.  The Lego “sculptures” that are all around Downtown Disney are incredible.  They have tables for the kids to explore with Legos; be prepared to spend some time here if you have a Legohead in the family.

Lego Dragon Downtown Disney

5. Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique – Did you know that there is a Boutique here at Downtown Disney?  Many people prefer it to the Magic Kingdom location because the salon is bigger and the kids aren’t rushed through as much as they are at the Magic Kingdom location.  Plus, you may find it easier to get a reservation at this location.

Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique

6. Splitsville – This is new to Downtown Disney and I think it’s terrific.  What a fun night out and away from the parks.  Have some dinner (it’s yummy and better than your typical bar food) and bowl a few sets.

splitsville-outside-view

7.  Once Upon a Toy – This is our favorite store.  I have been known to spend a lot of time putting together Mr. Potato Heads in the store.  I love that they let you play with their toys!  You can even make your own light sabers.  THAT my friends was serious business.   Right outside is a dancing fountain that my kids loved to run through on hot days…a fun afternoon away from the parks.

downtown_christmas

8.  Wolfgang Puck Grand Cafe – If you are a fan of Wolfgang Puck’s this should be on your list.  You can use Disney’s Dining Plan!

9.  AMC Dine in Theater – for many of you this isn’t a big deal, but we live in a small town that only has regular theaters.  My kids thought this was the most extravagant thing ever.  Dinner and movies together!

10. DisneyQuest – ok, I know some of you abhor Disney Quest.  We really liked it!  My kids were 9 and 10 when we went and were amazed that they could play whatever they wanted and it was all included.  It wasn’t busy and your Disney documents (if you purchase a package) come with 2 complimentary passes.  I think it was fun and would be great for a rainy morning.

Shula’s Steakhouse at the Swan and Dolphin Review

DSC 0050
DSC 0050

DSC_0050

I was recently invited out to the Swan and Dolphin to review Shula’s Steakhouse. Shula’s Steakhouse came to be when Don Shula stated that he couldn’t find a steak that was good enough for him. Shula set out to open a restaurant that matched his season as coach of the 1972 Miami Dolphins- Perfect! Well after reviewing this steakhouse I can say that Shula did what he wanted to. This place is amazing! The  atmosphere of Shula’s combines an elegant steakhouse with a refined sports bar, giving it a beautiful yet relaxing feel to it. The menu which was once printed on a football and signed by the coach is still brought to your table as a reflection of tradition and how amazing this restaurant really is.

Appetizers

DSC_0056DSC_0054

I had a sampling for my appetizer. I had seared Ahi Tuna with a cracked peppercorn crust, blackened sea scallops, BBQ bacon wrapped shrimp and jumbo lump crab cakes. The tuna was great. I am not a huge fish person especially when it is not cooked, however this tuna was light, spicy and quite yummy. The scallop was very tender and melted in my mouth like it should. The BBQ bacon shrimp was outstanding. Great mix of amazing quality shrimp, crispy bacon and one of the best BBQ sauces that I have had in a long time. The jumbo crab cake was my favorite appetizer of all. This crab cake was done perfectly. The main focus was the crab which is the way crab cakes should be! The sauce went great with this appetizer as well!

Starters

DSC_0061 DSC_0059

Lobster Bisque in my opinion was the best bisque that I have ever had. I could drink a gallon of that stuff, and still have room to want to take some home! The taste, quality and the fact that it had an excess of claw meat really did it for me! As I am sitting here writing this post all I want to do is run back and get some more! The Wedge salad was very good with crisp salad, tangy blue cheese dressing and some fresh tomatoes, onion and bacon. Overall the salad was good, but I will be looking for more soup next time I come in!

Main Course

DSC_0064 DSC_0066

Where do I start? Maybe by telling you that hands down this was the BEST steak I have ever had the pleasure of eating! I got the 24 once Porterhouse steak which has two of the best cuts of meat on the same plate, Strip and filet. I was intimidated by the size of this steak at first but after the first bite I knew I would want more. Luckily there is a 48 ounce on the menu which I will try to tackle on my next visit, sorry for the pun! I paired my steak with some grilled asparagus and crab mac and cheese. The asparagus was delicious and done just right on the grill, and the mac and cheese had made my list of the best side that I have ever had! I could not get enough of this stuff! It was unlike any mac and cheese I have ever had before, but it was so good. Again, I want to run down to the restaurant and get as much of the mac and cheese my car can hold!

Dessert

DSC_0067

When they asked me if I wanted to order a dessert when I sat down I knew I had to order something. I was convinced that the Molten Chocolate Lava cake was my best bet and so I decided to try it. I asked why I had to order so early and they told me it was because they cook the desserts to order. That’s right, the desserts are cooked fresh when you order it. This dessert with a great fudge middle running out and mixed with some great vanilla ice cream finished off the best meal in Orlando!

Wait Staff

DSC_0073DSC_0078

The wait staff was amazing. I was taken care of by Perry, who quickly became a friend not just my waiter. He was funny, attentive, and made me feel like I was eating at home with friends and not in a restaurant. Marc the general manager went out of his way to make sure that I was taken care of, and that everything was done to perfection. Sometimes when you review resturants you feel like they go above and beyond with you because your doing a review, however Marc was not this guy. I saw him going out of his way multiple times that night to make sure everyone was having a great time!

Overall Review

Today a lot of places want to go above and beyond with service, food, taste, and quality. Shula’s does one thing and they do it great. That one thing is everything! I cannot say anything more about this place. The food was simple yet delicious, the service was out of this world, the atmosphere was amazing, drinks were yummy, and I felt like I was at home here. I have to say without any reservations that Shula’s Steakhouse at the Swan and Dolphin is not only my favorite steakhouse in Orlando, but it is my favorite restaurant period! I will be back soon for my birthday and I cannot wait! Big thank you again to Marc and Perry for an amazing time with great drinks, amazing food, and the best service out there! If you don’t go to Shula’s, then your missing out! Tell Marc Jason from Chip and Company sent you and ask for Perry by name to be your server!

Marvel Courting Johnny Depp to Play Doctor Strange

Johnny Depp Doctor Strange
Johnny Depp Doctor Strange

Johnny Depp; Doctor Strange

The Marvel Studios news just keeps rolling in! The last few months have seen an upswing in news coming from the studio, as ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ moves towards shooting next month, and with ‘Ant-Man’ gearing up to go into production soon. So now we’re starting to hear trickling of what will be coming after Marvel’s first Phase 3 film, ‘Ant-Man’, and it looks like Marvel will finally get their long gesturing take on their iconic character, Doctor Strange, off the ground. If that wasn’t enough to get people excited, this new news will: Marvel is in early talks with Johnny Depp to take the role of The Sorcerer Supreme in the upcoming film.

Latino Review was the first to break the story last night, which has since been confirmed by Variety this morning, stating that Depp and Marvel have begun having meetings to take the role. Marvel wants a recognizable actor for not only the role, but to carry the Marvel Cinematic Universe forward once Robert Downey, Jr. steps out of the Iron Man suit for good. It makes perfect sense to use someone like Depp, who not only already has a relationship with Marvel, but has a strong following with the general public, and he’s the kind of actor who will continue to bring the crowds into the Marvel films once Downey, Jr. has stepped down. Depp is said to be very keen to jump into the Marvel Universe, and is said to be a fan of the comics and the character.

I love the idea of Depp joining the ever growing Marvel Universe, and he’s a perfect fit for the character of Strange. As quirky as some of his roles may be, this is one where it gives him a chance to really act, without having the quirky qualities his typecast himself into as of late. Are you excited about the idea of Johnny Depp joining into the Marvel Universe? Let me know in the comments below!

WDW Pics 2 App Review

image

WDW Pics 2 App Screenshot 2

If you’re like me, you always have a Disney themed background on your electronic devices. Well, I recently discovered an awesome app available on iTunes called WDW Pics 2. This app features over 50 different professional photos from Walt Disney World that you can use as the wallpaper for your Apple devices. It also lets you make a collage of photos using both the photos in the app and your own photos – how cool is that?

As a professional photographer, I generally only use my own photos from Disney but when I do chose to use someone else’s photos, they have to be great quality for me to approve of them. I’m happy to say that Paul and Matt have done an excellent job at capturing different sights, including some I would never think of stopping to take a picture of. I met Paul in December while we were at WDW. We had both setup to take photos of the Christmas Wishes fireworks at the TTC. Curious as to what made him choose the same location as I, we struck up a conversation and learned a lot about one another. Turns out, we’re both Native American, we’re friends with some of the same people and I’ve been following his website (non-photography related) for more than 10 years now. So it was like connecting with an old friend. On the ferry ride back to the Magic Kingdom, I discovered that his love of both Disney and photography led him to create an app so that others can always have a piece of Disney with them every time they look at their iPad, iPhone or iPod.

So what do I currently have set as the wallpaper on my iPod? Well, I LOVED the shot of The Enchanted Tiki Room that the guys took, so for now, that’s my wallpaper, but I’m sure I’ll change it up every week since I have enough photos to choose from for the rest of the year. The only downside I can find about the app is that it’s not available for us Android users and it’s not compatible for those of us with the 1st iPad.

And now is your chance to win 1 of 10 codes to download the app for FREE! All you have to do is be one of the first 10 people to email me at [email protected] to receive your code. At only $0.99, everyone can afford to download the app, just search for WDW Pics 2 in iTunes. Thanks to Paul for generously donating the free downloads to our readers! UPDATE: All codes have been given out. Thanks to everyone for contacting me to get your code.

Disney DIY – Make Your Own Be our Guest ‘Grey Stuff’ At Home

GreySTuf2
GreySTuf2

BOG

Unfortunately for me – this is the closest I got to “Be Our Guest” while I was at Walt Disney World during the week of Christmas – the line was super long as everyone wanted to check out the Magic Kingdom’s newest restaurant! But luckily for me (and for you too!), I can recreate a “Be Our Guest” experience at home – with this Disney DIY Recipe for the famous “Grey Stuff!” (Try it, it’s delicious. Don’t believe me? Ask the Dishes!)

GreySTuf2

“The Grey Stuff” Recipe (Courtesy of The Disney Diner!)

Ingredients:

1 (3.4 ounce) pkg Instant Vanilla Pudding Mix
1 1/2 cups Whole (or 2%) Milk
15 Oreos (regular, not double-stuffed)
1 (8 ounce) tub Whipped Topping
3 tablespoons Instant Chocolate Pudding Mix
Edible Pearl Sprinkles

Directions:

Mix entire contents of vanilla pudding mix and milk in a large bowl with a whisk. Set in fridge to chill 5 – 10 minutes.

Place Oreos in food processor and blend until they are fine crumbs (no large chunks). If you don’t have a food processor, you can place them into a gallon-size freezer bag and smash using a rolling pin. This will take a bit of time, since you’ll want to get rid of all large pieces.

Take the pudding from the fridge and mix in the crushed Oreos. The mixture will be dark gray/black. Now, fold in the tub of whipped topping. It now is a lighter color but not quite gray. Finally, mix in the chocolate pudding mix and stir well. You should now have “the grey stuff”! Place back in fridge to chill for at least one hour before serving.

GreySTuff Lumiere

Essentially we are talking about a deliciously fluffy chocolate/cookies and cream mousse type dessert – what could be better? And while I love the presentation they do of it at “Be Our Guest” – I must say, I will likely just end up eating it right out of the bowl with a spoon. Either way,

Stay tuned right here on Chip and Co for more DIY Disney Recipes straight from your favorite Disney Restaurants!
