Disney Wants to Serve Alcohol at it’s new Grand Central Creative Campus

DIS1591 NEW BLIND4
DIS1591 NEW BLIND4

Grand Central Creative Campus

Disney officials are asking the city for some relaxed rules in serving alcohol at its new 125-acre Grand Central Creative Campus located in Glendale, Calif, needless to say some residents are not to fond of this idea.

Adam Gilbert who is the director of corporate real estate for the Walt Disney Co., told Planning Hearing Officer Laura Stotler on Wednesday that Disney already hosts special events where alcohol is served without issues and that obtaining a blanket permit would help streamline the process.

Currently, he said, the company has to get a one-time permit through the state Department of Alcohol Beverage Control for each event, a process he termed as “cumbersome, time-consuming and requires state review and processing.”

He stressed that the special events, celebrating, for instance, the launch of a video game, a theme park ride or a retirement, would not be open to the public, and Disney security would always be present. Disney hosts about 35 special events a year, he said.

“You know it’s going to lead to people driving drunk,” Brown said prior to the meeting. “And there’s all kinds of kids who play in that area. They park in front of our houses, anyway. That’s bad enough. But the main thing is drinking. I don’t believe there should be any more drinking.”

Disney spokeswoman Nidia Caceros said the point of requesting the city permit is not to hold more events, but to cut red tape. She also noted that, in addition to security, there are limits on how much is served.

“They speed, litter, make unsafe U-turns,” she said. “We have to put up with those impacts during business hours. Now, by proposing to host meetings or parties where alcohol is served after hours, that just means that all those negative impacts are going to be extended into the evening hours.”

Stotler said by granting Disney the permit it wants would give the city more oversight over Disney’s special events. She said they would take the matter under consideration and made a decision in the next few weeks.

Disney World Dining Tips – Finding the best Bargain

P1060152
P1060152

H&V

I love a good deal!  I mean there is just something about doubling up a coupon, catching a discount code, getting a BOGO, or getting a little more for the price! I can’t help it!  I am all about value!  That doesn’t go away when I’m at Disney World!  In fact, I’m always on the hunt for the most magical bang for my buck!

Today I’m keeping this in mind and sharing with you some of my favorite Disney World Dining Tips including restaurant picks and money saving tips.  Let’s get going!

1.  Find a Bargain in the Buffet

Utilizing one of the many buffet offerings at Disney World is a great way to save money.  Buffet restaurants can be found throughout the parks and resorts and offer the bargain hunter a wide variety of eats!  Since buffet restaurants allow you to eat to your heart’s content, selecting a buffet restaurant as a late lunch will allow you to stretch your dollar.  I recommend a quick breakfast in the room or something light in the parks a mid day snack and the late lunch.  If your crowd is particularly hungry, you can always snack later in the night.

Here are a few of my favorite buffet restaurants

Hollywood and Vine

Location: Disney’s Hollywood Studios

Type of Dining:  Table Service with characters at lunch/no characters at dinner

Price: Moderate $$-$$$

Trails End

Location:  Fort Wilderness Resort

Type of Dining:  Table Service with characters

Price:  Moderate $$-$$$

Biergarten

Location:  EPCOT World Showcase Germany Pavilion

Type of Dining:  Table Service with entertainment

Price:  Moderate $$-$$$

Liberty Tree Tavern

Location:  Magic Kingdom Liberty Square

Type of Dining:  Table Service without characters

Price:  Moderate $$-$$$

Chef Mickeys

Location:  Disney’s Contemporary Resort

Type of Dining:  Table Service with characters

Price:  Moderate $$-$$$

2.  Scale  Back on Quick-Service Meals

Another way to save is to share a meal!  I find splitting a meal especially helpful when I plan on doing a lot of snacking.  I look for quick-service restaurants that serve large portions or let you customize your meal.  For example, restaurants with a topping bar for your burgers and sandwiches.  I find that splitting a burger and then fancying it up a bit hits the spot.  Another idea for scaling back is to eat off of the kids meal at quick-service restaurants.  The portions are enough to fill you and the price difference is nice on the wallet.

Here are a few of my favorite quick service restaurants that make for easy sharing!

Cosmic Ray’s Starlight Cafe

Location:  Magic Kingdom Tomorrowland

Type of Dining:  Quick-service

Price:  Value $

Scale back pick:  because of the build your burger topping bar and wide variety of hearty meal options and kids meal options

Everything Pop!

Location:  Disney’s Pop Century Resort

Type of Dining:  Quick-service

Price:  Value $

Scale back pick:  Wide variety of choices in one convenient food court!  Portions are great for sharing!

Sunshine Seasons

Location:  EPCOT

Type of Dining:  Quick-service

Price:  Value $

Scale back pick:  Wide variety of choices in one convenient food court!  You get to eat loads here, plus if you go for dessert, you can select a HUGE dessert item from the bakery case!   Splitting is the way to go here!

3.  FREEfill

I am going for a copyright on this word.  Okay, not really, but it is a Disney term of endearment for me and my crew!  A FREEfill is defined as a quick-service restaurant that allows for free refills.  At Disney World, this is a rarity.  I don’t know about you, but I typically want more than the typical cup of drink when I’m at Disney World, especially when it is hot out.  So today, I’m sharing with you my top quick-service spots with self serve drink stations.  Save on your sips and bargain up!

My picks:

Resort Food Courts (to an extent now thanks to Rapid Fill)

Magic Kingdom:  Be our Guest (lunch)

EPCOT:  Sunshine Seasons, Electric Umbrella

Animal Kingdom:  Restaurantosaurus

I hope that all you bargain finders will enjoy these tips and suggestions.  What is your best bargain saving tip or suggestion for eating in the parks?  Do you have any especially cheap eating tips?  Share them in the comment section below!

As always, thanks for reading and commenting!

See ya real soon,

Michael Douglas Set to Star as Hank Pym in Marvel’s ‘Ant-Man’

Ant Man
Ant Man

Michael Douglasant

Just a few weeks back, we got word that Marvel studios had locked in Paul Rudd to star in their newest film, ‘Ant-Man’, directed by Edgar Wright. At the time, most fans assumed that Rudd would be playing the first incarnation of the Marvel hero, Hank Pym, in the film. But that doesn’t seem to be the case at all, as Marvel Studios has just announced that Michael Douglas is set to play the older Hank Pym in their highly anticipated adaptation. In the announcement, they also confirmed that Rudd would actually be playing Scott Lang, the second Ant-Man, and confirms that Wright’s film will be generational story. Back in 2006, Wright had this to say about the film:

Well, the thing is that what we want to do, the idea that we have for the adaptation is to actually involve both. Is to have a film that basically is about Henry Pym and Scott Lang, so you actually do a prologue where you see Pym as Ant-Man in action in the 60’s, in sort of “Tales to Astonish” mode basically, and then the contemporary, sort of flash-forward, is Scott Lang’s story, and how he comes to acquire the suit, how he crosses paths with Henry Pym, and then, in an interesting sort of Machiavellian way, teams up with him. So it’s like an interesting thing, like the “Marvel Premiere” one that I read which is Scott Lang’s origin, it’s very brief like a lot of those origin comics are, and in a way, the details that are skipped through in the panels and the kind of thing we’d spend half an hour on.

This is brilliant casting on Marvel’s part, and something I can fully get behind. The casting goes directly in line with what Wright has been teasing for years, and Douglas is perfect to play that older version of Pym. I can’t wait to see Douglas and Rudd play off each other in the film, and this casting continues Marvel Studios’ trend of incredible casting, and getting the biggest talents they can. Check out the full Marvel press release about the casting below.

From Marvel.com:

Michael Douglas has stepped into some of the biggest–or should that be tiniest?–shoes of his career.
The two-time Academy Award-winning actor will join director Edgar Wright and Paul Rudd in Marvel’s “Ant-Man,” hitting theaters July 31, 2015.

“With Hank Pym’s rich history in the Marvel Universe, we knew we needed an actor capable of bringing the weight and stature to the role that the character deserves,” said Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige. “We felt incredibly relieved when Michael Douglas agreed to step into the part with the charm and fortitude he brings to every character he inhabits, and couldn’t be more excited to see what he will do to bring Hank Pym to life.”

The legendary actor, who earned an Academy Award in the category of Best Actor in a Leading Role for his iconic portrayal of Gordon Gecko in “Wall Street,” has also starred in numerous modern classics including “Basic Instinct,” “Fatal Attraction,” “The Game,” “Wonder Boys,” “Traffic” and many more. In addition to acting, Douglas has also served as Producer and Executive Producer on a number of films including “Romancing the Stone,” John Carpenter’s “Starman” and “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest,” for which he also won an Academy Award for Best Picture. Most recently, Douglas earned a Golden Globe and his first Primetime Emmy Award for his role as legendary entertainer Liberace in the HBO original film “Behind the Candelabra.”

Douglas will star as Hank Pym, who first appeared in TALES TO ASTONISH #27 (Jan. 1962), with Rudd starring as Scott Lang in the film.

Are you excited to see Michael Douglas join the ever growing Marvel Cinematic Universe? Let me know in the comments below! Marvel’s ‘Ant-Man’ will hit theaters on July 31, 2015.

Disney Needs a Magical Miracle This Year at The Oscars

Frozen
Frozen

Frozen

Disney didn’t do as well as I thought they might have at this year’s Oscar nominations. You may have heard that”Saving Mr. Banks” was not nominated for Best Picture and and acting categories.

I was shocked to hear that Tom Hanks was not nominated for his role as “Walt Disney” in ” Saving Mr. Banks”. However the movie did get a nomination for Thomas Newman’s original music score.

Frozen” was nominated for best animated feature. Disney animation usually loses to Pixar.  “Frozen” also was nominated in the best original song category for “Let it Go,”  although it has some hardcore competition from U2’s “Ordinary Love” from “Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom,” which just won a Golden Globe.

On the upside, I am sure Disney will be just fine because “Frozen” made more than $700 million worldwide and it’s still off and running. Last year, “Iron Man 3” was the second highest grossing movie of the year. “Monsters University” made more than $700 million worldwide. Last but not least, another big winner for Disney last year was “Oz The Great and Powerful” and “Thor: The Dark World,” both made more than $200 million in the U.S.A.

A little F.Y.I. for all of my Disney Addicts, did you know Walt Disney won 22 competitive Academy Awards between 1932 and 1969, the last of which for “Winnie the Pooh and the Blustery Day” which he won after he passed away in 1966. He also received 3 honorary awards.

What do you think?
