SeaWorld Orlando Celebrates National Penguin Awareness Day with 15 Penguin Chicks

Penguin Chicks

Today marks National Penguin Awareness Day and the SeaWorld Orlando Aviculture Team is celebrating with a “penguin chick” boom. Since November 30, a total of 15 penguin chicks have hatched at Antarctica: Empire of the Penguin, the all-new attraction which features a colony of more than 250 penguins from four species – king, Adelie, Gentoo and rockhopper.

The king penguin was the first chick to hatch followed shortly after by the Adelie, Gentoo and rockhopper chicks. Although currently ranging in size from 6 inches to 21 inches, the king chick, the largest penguin at SeaWorld’s Antarctica will grow to be as tall as 2.5 ft. and its smallest, the rock hopper will grow to be approximately 12 inches tall.

All 15 chicks are under the watchful eye of the SeaWorld Orlando Aviculture Team, who monitor the chicks’ growth closely and provide routine feedings. Many of the chicks are currently residing behind-the-scenes in a penguin nursery until they fledge, which is the process of losing their baby down and growing their waterproof feathers. As the chicks become more comfortable within the nursery pool they will begin daily “fieldtrips” into the exhibit until they’re old enough to be with the colony.

SeaWorld Orlando fans will have the chance to help name a Gentoo chick. You can cast a vote for your favorite name by visiting SeaWorld Orlando Facebook page.

Penguin lovers of the world can unite this weekend at SeaWorld Orlando during Wild Days Penguin Lover’s Weekend with SeaWorld Animal Ambassador Julie Scardina. In addition to hearing Julie’s lifelong love of animals and learning more about the parks’ commitment to wildlife conservation, guests will have the special chance to virtually dance like a penguin, walk side by side with a penguin colony, and star in shareable photo opportunities at the coolest “ice” block party at Antarctica: Empire of the Penguin.

Disney goes to court for not paying fair share to Home Improvement Creators

Home Improvement
Home Improvement

Home Improvement logo

The Walt Disney Company is being accused of using “Hollywood accounting” to cheat the creators of the popular 90’s show “Home Improvement” out of their share of profits.

In the lawsuit,  Matt Williams, Carmen Finestra, David McFadzean, and Wind Dancer Productions are accusing Walt Disney Pictures of using some accounting tricks to avoid paying them their fair share of the profits.

The creators behind the show say they should have received 75 % of the profits from the series. This contract is dated back to the 90’s.

According to the court papers filed, it is said that Disney worked their way around their end of the bargain by charging expenses and distribution fees to the series and not reporting cable retransmission royalties, merchandising, and music publishing revenue.

The plaintiffs claim Disney refused to give auditors all the records they need. The creators claim they have been able to complete only 3 out of 6 audits,  during the shows run in the ’90s. They are saying that a full audit from 2001 to 2012 is still not completed.

The complaint says that Disney has made a killing on this show due to their continued exploitation of the show.

According to the 20 page document filed, Disney reportedly told the creators they have to “‘wait in a queue'” with other people that are to share profits in the series as well.  The creators say they have been made to wait around for more than 4 years for a full audit.

Even though they don’t have all the information, the creators say that the audit reports show that Disney failed to properly account for revenue from the show, which is still sold into syndication and has made more than $1.5 billion in profits.

The plaintiffs are seeking an accounting, which is their rights under the agreements, and damages.

Do you remember “Toy Story of Terror” from Halloween last year?  This year we are in for another holiday Toy Story treat. ABC has announced plans for a second short called “Toy Story That Time Forgot” , it will air during the holidays.

Here is a brief description: During a post-Christmas play date, the gang find themselves in uncharted territory when the coolest set of action figures ever turn out to be dangerously delusional. It’s all up to Trixie, the triceratops, if the gang hopes to return to Bonnie’s room in this “Toy Story That Time Forgot.”

ABC’s October 2013 premiere of “Toy Story of Terror!” ranked No. 1 in its time slot. Disney is hoping for the same great numbers this time around.

The cast of “Toy Story That Time Forgot” include:s

  • Tom Hanks as Woody
  • Tim Allen as Buzz
  • Kristen Schaal as Trixie
  • Kevin McKidd (“Grey’s Anatomy”) as Reptillus Maximus

Fun Spot Orlando Review

DSC 0209
DSC 0209

DSC_0209

Just a few miles from Disney and Universal you will find a hidden spot from those who come to see the Mouse or the Minions and Potter. Fun Spot started out as a go kart track that has grown into a hidden jewel to the Orlando locals. Fun Spot boost many perks that you do not see in Orlando much. Fun Spot offers free admission, free Wi-Fi, and free parking. I recently visited this park to experience what many know to be HUGE!!!!

DSC_0168 DSC_0172

Fun Spot is known for its go kart tracks, thrill rides, Sky Coasters, and now rollercoasters. That’s right, at the International Drive location; Fun Spot has added two new rollercoasters in its 25 million dollar expansion project. Freedom Flyer is a one of a kind steel suspension coaster that allows kids as well as adults to enjoy the G forces, drops, and fast turns. White Lightning is Orlando’s only wooden rollercoaster. This coaster boosts a 90 degree turn that makes you think that you are falling off the tracks. Before I go any further, I have to say that a trip to Fun Spot is worth it just to ride White Lightning. I love rollercoasters, and this coaster has a lot more to offer than most think. I loved this coaster so much I rode it 7 times in a row, and will be buying an annual pass just to ride this coaster as much as I can!

Videos of the Rollercoasters please go here!!! For White Lightning click here, and for Freedom Flyer click here!

DSC_0208 DSC_0206

Thrill rides are also huge here! A spinning G-Force filled ride from Six Flags over Georgia has landed here allowing riders to experience major G forces and going vertical! There are also a scrambler, Rip Curl, a Ferris wheel, bumper boats, bumper cars, a kid zone, and much more!  There is also a new expanded food court that has healthy food, fresh cut fries, beer, and your typical carnival food favorites!

DSC_0205 DSC_0191

Sky Coaster is the new focus of the parks standing at a height of 250 feet. Once you’re placed in your harness, you are lifted up to the 250 foot mark. After a short countdown and a prayer, you pull your rip cord, releasing you from the safety and allowing you to dive to the ground before swinging back and forth. This attraction gives you the feeling of bungee jumping, and the fun of being on a huge swing. I have done this attraction before and I will say that it is one of the most exciting and downright terrifying experiences in Orlando. Having the ability to pull the cord to start your rapid ascent is amazing!

DSC_0182 DSC_0199

Don’t Worry! Fun Spot did not go away from its roots! There are 5 go kart tracks for thrill seekers to enjoy. These tracks are not just any ordinary tracks either, the owner of this park holds 4 US patents on tracks. There is a slick track, multi-level tracks, as well as Orlando’s original ski slope track. There are single as well as double go karts for families to enjoy as well!

What is the best part of Fun Spot? Well this is a two part answer. First off the value!  If you purchase online, an adult can enjoy all day fun at Fun Spot for only 40.00 plus tax! This is great for families who don’t all enjoy the rides. You can come as a family, park for free, get in for free and pay for what you want! No more 90 dollar tickets for everyone in your family! If you don’t want an all-day pass, you can also pay per attraction or do a sample ticket to allow you to try a few things at the park. The second part of my answer is the family environment. The park is family owned and operated, and the employees are focused on making sure you’re having a fun and safe time. I spent almost five hours in the park and did not have one single negative experience with anyone who worked there.

My overall opinion of Fun Spot is that it is a must do attraction when coming to Orlando. Don’t get me wrong, I know that they don’t have a mouse, a castle, minions running around, a magical wand, or transformers, but Fun Spot does have one thing, family fun in a safe environment. The new expansion at the International Drive location really bumps up this attraction. The two rollercoasters are amazing, fun, and thrilling for both kids and adults. I know that I will be back soon to Fun Spot to ride White Lightning as many times as I can! The only question I have left on my mind is when I will be able to afford my Annual Pass! I need some more Lightning in my life!!!  If you do go to Fun Spot, tell them Jason from Chip and Company sent you!!! Have you been to Fun Spot? What’s your opinion?

Melissa Hernandez Wins the Disneyland Tinker Bell Half Marathon

2014 Tinkerbell Half Marathon Start Line

With the help of a little pixie dust, Melissa Hernandez won her first-ever half marathon Sunday, flying away from the field to win the Tinker Bell Half Marathon at Disneyland Resort.

Hernandez is a 29-year-old from Oxnard, Calif. She ran among the leaders early in the 13.1-mile race. But nearly halfway through the event, Hernandez left the remaining challengers behind. She floated across the finish line to cheers and confetti.

Hernandez zipped around the course in 1:25:40, nearly two minutes ahead of second-place finisher Alyssa White of Durham, NC (1:27:28). Hernandez’s winning time was the third-fastest in the race’s three-year history. Kellie Nickerson of Albuquerque, NM, who won the inaugural Tinker Bell Half Marathon in 2012, came in third (1:28:58).

“I had finished second in a few half marathons, but I had never won one,” said Hernandez, who was running in her first Tinker Bell Half Marathon. “And I had never run in a race this big before either, so this was really nice to win my first one here.”

Hernandez beat out more than 15,000 runners who ran the race through Disneyland Resort and past several city of Anaheim landmarks. The third annual event featured music, entertainment, Disney characters and costumed runners, including many wearing fairy wings and pixie dust. Finishers received a commemorative Tinker Bell “wings” medal.

The weekend of events, all geared toward health, fitness and active lifestyles for women, featured a variety of events, including the Never Land Family Fun Run 5K on Friday, the new Disneyland 10K, the runDisney Kids Races and a Pasta Party on Saturday, and the Tinker Bell Half Marathon on Sunday. There was also a three-day health and fitness expo featuring the latest running merchandise, products, apparel and guest speakers – all tailored for women.

Tinker Bell Half Marathon Weekend, hosted by Disneyland Resort in partnership with the City of Anaheim, is one of two women-focused event weekends in the runDisney series.  The other is Disney’s Princess Half Marathon Weekend presented by Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals, which takes place at Walt Disney World Resort in late Feb.  Both event weekends are among the largest women-specific events in the country.

Top 5 Walt Disney World Sandwiches

Sandwich Lighthouse
Sandwich Lighthouse

Sandwiches EOutside

There are few things in this world that are better than a good sandwich – that perfect combo of bread, spread, and fillings makes for a great meal and can really hit the spot. When I am in Walt Disney World, I am always on the lookout for a great sandwich – luckily I usually don’t have to look too far. In my culinary search through the world of Disney Dining, I have determined these 5 as the Top Walt Disney World Sandwiches:

Sandwich Holiday

Holiday Turkey Sandwich at Earl Of Sandwich In Downtown Disney – This holiday delight is packed with turkey, stuffing, gravy, and cranberry sauce (I added lettuce and tomato to mine, and it was a really nice touch!), and is like Thanksgiving wrapped up in a warm, crisp roll! Their other sandwiches are all amazing too, served on bread that is baked daily in-house, and all the toppings are fresh and delicious! Oh, and don’t forget to grab a brownie sandwich for dessert – they are filled with your choice of vanilla, chocolate or peanut butter frosting (yeah, that’s right – FROSTING!)

Sandwich Lighthouse

Lighthouse Sandwich at Columbia Harbour House in the Magic Kingdom – This adorable spot serves up fried fish and chips, shrimp, salmon, a lobster roll with fresh chunks of lobster, and a delectable clam chowder – but also features an awesome meatless meal option too! The Lighthouse Sandwich features hummus with tomato and a crunchy broccoli slaw, and it’s served on multi-grain bread with chips on the side. It’s a great change from burgers or chicken, and the setting is great – grab an upstairs table near a window and watch the World go by as you eat!

SandwichBeOurGuest

Croque Monsieur at Be Our Guest in the Magic Kingdom – Ham, gruyere cheese, and creamy bechamel combine on panini pressed bread to make a “must try” sandwich that is crispy on the outside and warm, stringy, and gooey on the inside. Oh, and it’s served with fries. Yum. Be Our Guest is one of WDW’s newest dining locations, and it’s themed after the animated classic Beauty And The Beast. Lunch is quick service and features this as well as other sandwich and salad options, and it can get crowded – so you might want to get there early (aka before they open!) to ensure that you will get a chance to try this delicious sandwich

Sandwich WP Club

Rotisserie Turkey Club at Wolfgang Puck Express in Downtown Disney – Avocado, bacon, red onion, plum tomatoes, romaine, and remoulade pair with plump juicy turkey to make a sandwich that will really fill you up! It’s a great twist on a traditional club, and the freshly roasted turkey really makes this sandwich shine! If you’re not in the mood for turkey, might I suggest the meatloaf sandwich instead (which is also topped with bacon!) – all the sandwiches there are served with crispy herb seasoned fries (which are the perfect complement!). If you have never eaten at Wolfgang Puck Express, you should definitely check it out, and if you aren’t in the mood for a sandwich then try the rotisserie chicken with mashed potatoes

Sandwich Ice Cream

Ice Cream Cookie Sandwich – This dessert sandwich definitely deserves a place on the list – with its homemade cookies baked fresh daily (in varieties like chocolate chip, sugar, and seasonal gingerbread), and ability to customize ice cream flavors, this one is a winner for sure. During the holiday season you will find choices like peppermint ice cream, and cookies decorated with festive sprinkles. You can find this treat at several places throughout the World, including Sleepy Hollow in the Magic Kingdom, Fountainview Café in Epcot, and Dino-Bite Snacks in Animal Kingdom. Oh, and the best part is – you can use a Disney Dining Plan Snack Credit to pay for it!

Ok so there they are – the top five most delicious sandwiches in all of the “World” (according to me that is!) – but I would LOVE to know what you think – what’s your favorite Disney sandwich?

Spice Road Table has Opened in Epcot’s Morocco Pavilion

Spice Road Table
Spice Road Table

Spice road table

Spice Road Table has great views of World Showcase Lagoon and IllumiNations. Spice Road Table is  an authentic taste of the Mediterranean at the Morocco Pavilion in Epcot.

The colors and lighting are beautiful. In true Disney fashion the atmosphere is very Moroccan, you know Disney’s attention to detail. There are 60 seats inside and 120 outdoor seats.

Take a look:

If you want to sample the food why not try two tapas platters with organic sangria or maybe a Mediterranean beer or possibly a cocktail.

If you aren’t in the mood to eat, or if you are not feeling the menu, try the juice bar for a Morocarita, Habibi Daiquiri or Sultan’s Colada. If you don’t drink alcohol they do have a non-alcoholic drink.  Not in the mood for a drink, well on a hot Florida day there is nothing better then ice cream. They have some flavors that are out of the ordinary like toasted almond and rosewater, plus beer, sangria and wine.

A few helpful hints:

  • Spice Road Table opens at 11 a.m. and closes when Epcot does.
  • You can not make reservations.
  • The Dining Plan is not accepted.
