Dinosaurs at Animal Kingdom

Ok so we know they are not real live Dinosaurs but they are very lifelike. Disney has been doing a test run on a new character experience at Animal Kingdom. This test will run will continue through May 3 and it involves a velociraptor  named“Val”. Her escort is Professor Parker Woodson, they will strolling through the streets of Dinoland U.S.A. and meeting some guests along the way.

The story is the Professor raised “Val” since birth. So she is friendly to people and likes being around them. “Val” is always moving around so she does not stop for pictures.

So we don’t know if she will stick around, of course it depends on guest feedback. So far she will make appearances at 11 a.m., 12, 2, 3, and 4 p.m

Does this sound like a good idea? I think it would freak me out a bit!

Disney Interactive & RockYou to Purchase of Three Playdom Games

Disney Interactive and RockYou have unveiled a plan whereby RockYou will assume operation of three Playdom games. The games include Gardens of Time and Words of Wonder on Facebook and mobile, and City Girl on Facebook.

This new relationship will allow RockYou, which maintains several top titles and runs one of the industry’s largest in-game video ad networks, to continue to serve the millions of people who enjoy playing these games each month.

Moving forward, Playdom will focus on creating new game experiences for its players, while RockYou will expand its publishing portfolio with some well-established games. Most importantly, we hope this relationship will allow fans to continue to enjoy these games into the foreseeable future.

The transition will occur over several months, and we’re aiming to minimize interruptions of the games, and we do not expect major impact to gameplay during this period. It’s our hope that players experience no inconvenience throughout the transition or beyond. Players should stay tuned for news and updates so they may continue to enjoy these games now and into the future.

Is Disney World Character Dining Worth it or is it Overpriced?

P1130176
P1130176

Disney World Character Dining meals at Walt Disney World are an opportunity for your child to meet some favorite Disney characters up close and personal. The characters are integrated into each meal’s theme. In some cases, the characters’ costuming is designed specifically for the meal’s character (pun intended) and other times the characters themselves are central to the location’s theming. Ohana’s Best Friends Breakfast with Lilo & Stitch at the Polynesian Resort is an example of both. Lilo and Stitch are a natural fit for this South Pacific inspired resort. They are joined by their good friends Pluto and Mickey who rock some trendy Hawaiian shirts.

Most of the character meals are buffets or family style meals with the notable exception of Fairytale Dining at Cinderella’s Royal Table. As a general rule, you can count on meeting four or five Disney characters in about 75 minutes.

How does it all work? Once guests are settled, the Disney characters will stop at each table for a photo op, to sign autograph books, and for some good-natured antics. They may also lead a parade or a little activity such as napkin twirling.

Defining Value

Value is relative, especially at Walt Disney World. In the case of character dining, I look at four main factors: atmosphere (this includes characters and entertainment), food quality, quantity, and of course cost.

Atmosphere

It’s all about the characters. After all, that’s why you frantically began dialing at 6:55 a.m. (sans coffee) 180 days out to get hold of a coveted Advanced Dining Reservation at Cinderella’s Royal Table, isn’t it? There are two types of characters at the character meals – face characters like the princesses and costumed characters like Winnie the Pooh. For me, face characters have an advantage over their costumed friends. Face characters can speak and really engage their guests through conversation while costumed characters are limited to gestures as they do not have a voice. So, if you’re looking for the most value, I say go for character dining with face characters such as the Supercalifragilistic Breakfast or Cinderella’s Happily Ever After Dinner at 1900 Park Fare or Princess Storybook Dining in the Norway Pavilion. You’re kids will get more than a quick picture, a hug, and an autograph. That being said, if your child is Handy Manny’s number #1 fan, there’s no doubt meeting him at Playhouse Disney’s Play ‘n Dine at Hollywood & Vine will b e a highlight of the trip, even if he doesn’t speak.

Let’s talk about venue next. Some are truly special such as Akershus Royal Banquet Hall or Cinderella’s Royal Table while others are run-of-the mill. Yes, Playhouse Disney Play ‘n Dine, I’m talking about you. If your food tastes better in pretty surroundings, then book a princess meal which take place in some of the prettier character dining restaurants. Something that is hard to put a value on is taking photographs inside an empty theme park. For a photograph of your kids alone in front of Cinderella Castle, book a breakfast character dining experience before the park opens; you’ll be able to enter early and get those special pictures.

Food Quality

Most Disney World character meals are buffets and I would rate the overall food quality to be mediocre – you’re really paying for the character interaction. Though it may be just average, there is a lot of variety and the food is plentiful. These buffets have kid-centric stations that are sure to please little ones. One of my favorite character dining experiences from both an atmosphere and food quality perspective is Chef Mickey’s in the Contemporary Resort. To sum it up, if you weigh food quality heavily when judging value, then you’ll probably think character dining is overpriced.

Food Quantity

There’s no shortage of food at the buffets and family style meals. The problem is my family usually doesn’t eat our money’s worth. My kids are bouncing out of their seats waiting for their favorite character to stop by so it can be an exercise in futility to get them to eat their food. I’m so busy taking pictures and filling plates at the buffet that all-you-can eat often translates into all-you-have-the-chance-to-eat. This is compounded by long lines at some of the buffets since multiple groups are often seated around the same time. Where’s the best value? For my money, family style meals win out. The platters are brought directly to the table and mom and dad don’t spend a lot of time taking turns at the buffet filling plates.

Cost

If you’re paying out-of-pocket and compare restaurants based on price and food quality, you’ll pay more at most character dining. But really, you’re paying for your little ones to have a guaranteed opportunity to meet their favorite Disney friend one-on-one. Guests on the dining plan have the advantage of meeting characters for one table-service credit (with the exception of Fairytale Dining at Cinderella’s Royal Table), the same as other table-service restaurants. That’s a good deal.

What I don’t like is feeling obligated to purchase a photograph on top of the sometimes steep cost of the meal. At locations like Ohana’s a photographer will take your group’s picture before breakfast and then will give you the option to purchase it for about $30.

What’s the verdict?

As a mom, atmosphere (i.e., meeting the characters) is the most heavily weighted factor when I judge value. That means if my little guys have a favorite character or two, a couple of character meals are worth the money especially if the character is not so easy to find in the park. In fact, a character meal often means more time for the attractions since I don’t have to arrange our touring schedule to find and meet an elusive character.

What do you think? Is character dining worth the money?

Top 10 Ways to Incorporate Disney Into Your Daily Life (aka #Disneyside)

DSY987546SMALL
DSY987546SMALL

side

If you are anything like me, you are a self admitted Disney Addict.  People know you as the Disney girl (or guy), you’re known for your trip suggestions, and Disney is more of a common  thread in your day than cotton.  Yes, you my friend are among good company.  We are the Disney people and we get each other.  Today I’m speaking to you as well as to those new to this Disney lifestyle.  I’m sharing my top 10 ways to incorporate Disney into your daily life (can we say #DisneySide???)

10.  Start your day off Disney style!

From the most simple Disney themed mug to the most amazing Mickey shaped waffles, there are many ways to begin your day the Disney way!  Take some inspiration from the parks, with a Disney recipe or just kick back with your resort mug full of steaming hot coffee and get things going in Disney style.  This is sure to get your day off to a better start!

9.  Get animated!

Draw inspiration from your favorite Disney movies, characters, and the parks when you pick your clothes.  You can customize your look as much or as little as you want.  I love work of Disneybound’s Leslie Kay.  She has some awesome outfits that range from everyday (not too out there) to over the top designs.  Start simple, with a nod to a character or ride and see where your creativity takes you!  I have a set of stack rings that bought expressly because they remind me of the bubbles that flank the stage of Finding Nemo the Musical!  It’s amazing how something as little as a hair accessory, bow tie, or set  of rings can put a Disney smile on your face!

8.  Put some Pixie Dust at your workplace!

I always joke that my office has a mouse problem.  No, I’m not talking about the pests that feast on the crumbs.  I’m talking about The Mouse…Mickey!  I’m a kindergarten teacher so my assortment includes loads of Vinylmations that students bring back from Disney World, Disney Cruises, and stops past the Disney Store–as well as other toys and trinkets, a Cinderella Castle cookie jar (because it is beautiful and handy for snacks), Disney picture frames, and probably just about every other Disney drawing or thing that a 5 year old could ever make or find.  Maybe you wouldn’t be as extreme as me, but I highly encourage you to let your Disney Side show at work!  From Disney themed wall calendars to mouse pads, picture frames, pin displays, and everything in between, you can show your Disney Side at work and brighten up your space (that’s one way to put some whistle into your work day).

7.  Get a Disney Ringtone!

They say that music can bring back memories and take you back in time.  I say how about applying that theory to your Disney memories.  There are so many great Disney songs that make for the perfect ringtone.  Let everyone around you know that you’re a Disney Addict!

6.  Get a Disney Watch!

This seems simple, but there is power in looking down at your watch only to see Mickey or another Disney character looking back at you!  I have an awesome Disney watch that looks very sophisticated; its gold with Mickey’s face done up in rhinestones.  It makes me so happy as I look down at it and my students love it.  Who says adults can’t have a fun watch?  I do!

5.  Listen to Disney Music!

I’m a firm believer that there is the perfect Disney song for every occasion.  Seriously.  Whether you’re happy, sad, or just somewhere in between, Disney’s got you covered!  I bought music from the parks to bring home to listen to in my car, on runs, and throughout my day.  Maybe you’ll find your magic with some internet playlist listening!  Either way, there is no better way to get out of a grumpy morning mood than the “There’s a Great Big  Beautiful Tomorrow!”  Give it a try and show your Disney Side!

4.  Get Disney Wallpaper (not that kind…)

With the vast amounts of mobile devices, computers, tablets out there, your digital world is just begging to be taken over by your Disney Obsession.  From pictures you snapped in the parks to official wallpapers and lock-screens, you’ll find your fill of Disney fantasy for every corner of your life.  Disney-fy your digital self!

3.  Eat Disney!

Get your Disney grub on!  From awesome movie nights to creating some of your favorite park recipes, there’s nothing like the taste of Disney to take you back!  I like the adventurous recipes, like conjuring up your own Dole Whip or Tonga Toast!  Try your hand at some Disney dining and live out your park days all of your days!

2.  Get your Ride Fix on the Internet!

I love modern technology!  There’s so much to see on the internet!  One of my favorite ways to get my Disney fix is to browse through videos on Youtube and live streams.  From official Disney Park’s Channel to fan videos of rides, attractions, and parades, I watch it all!  It’s like I can be at Disney World Everyday…okay, the next best thing!

1.  Stay Connected! Chip and Co. and Disney Addict Page

What’s the best way to fill your life with Disney?  I’ll take a hint from Buddy the Elf and say that the best way to spread Disney cheer is talking with other addicts far and near (I edited him a teeny bit).  That’s right, you can get your Disney fix from fellow DA (Disney Addicts) by keeping up with Chip and Co. for all the latest park news, tips, and more.  You can get plugged into a great network of addicts through our forums and the You Might Be a Disney Addict page on Facebook!  Once you plug in here, you’ll be able to connect through social media like Twitter and Instagram and your Disney networking can grow!  Get connected and spread the magic!

So what do you do already to show your Disney Side, every day?  Share your magic in the comment section below!  Don’t forget to connect with other’s by using the hashtag, #DisneySide and #YMBADA (this is for You might be a Disney addict).

As always, thanks for reading and commenting!

See ya real soon,

El Capitan Theater will Screen Maleficent

Some background on my favorite villain, “Maleficent” explores the untold story of Disney’s most iconic villain from the classic “Sleeping Beauty” and the elements of her betrayal that ultimately turn her pure heart to stone. Driven by revenge and a fierce desire to protect the moors over which she presides, Maleficent cruelly places an irrevocable curse upon the human king’s newborn infant Aurora. As the child grows, Aurora is caught in the middle of the seething conflict between the forest kingdom she has grown to love and the human kingdom that holds her legacy. Maleficent realizes that Aurora may hold the key to peace in the land and is forced to take drastic actions that will change both worlds forever.

Now to the story, Hollywood’s legendary El Capitan Theatre will host a special showing of Disney’s “Maleficent” in Dolby Atmos May 29 – July 17, 2014.

Greg Wilson will present a new magic show before every showing of the movie through July 6. Plus, El Capitan moviegoers will get to see an exclusive collection of props from the movie.

“The El Capitan will kick off our special engagement of Disney’s ‘Maleficent’ in royal fashion,” said Lylle Breier, senior vice president of worldwide special events for Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. “El Capitan Theatre guests will have the opportunity to see the movie in advance of its national opening with two special screenings on May 29 at 8 p.m. and Midnight. Both of these screenings will also feature raffle prizes and costume contests, adding to the excitement of this long anticipated film.”

Daily showtimes are as follows:

  • 10 a.m.
  • 1:10 p.m.
  • 4:20 p.m.
  • 7:30 p.m.
  • And a special 10:35 p.m. show time opening weekend (May 30-June 1) and Friday and Saturday nights following.

Remember “Maleficent” opens on May 30, 2014. I know I will make sure I see this movie. How about you?

Disney Makes an Offer to the Union

I am sure you heard by now that Disney World and the Union are in ongoing contract negotiations. Well Disney has made an offer.

Disney World recently offered a new contract to the Service Trades Council, which would raise starting pay for full time cast members to $10 an hour but there would be no more pensions for future cast members.

Starting pay would go up to $9 an hour right away this year, then another raise to $9.50 the next year,  and then finally to $10 by July 2016.

There is more, If you are a full time cast member and not at the top of you your pay scale you would only get 3 raises of at least 50 cents per hour. If you are already at the top of your pay scale you would get 3 raises of 30 cents an hour.

The Union asked to no longer offer pensions for cast members hired on or after Jan. 1, 2016. They would instead be asked to join 401(k) plans instead.

Disney would continue to offer pensions to any cast member hired by Dec. 31, 2015 and enroll them in the new 401(k) plans.

I know this is a controversial topic and being a former cast member I have strong feelings about it. Share your thoughts with us?

Chef Cat Cora Responds to Questions About Kouzzina

Kouzzina

You may have heard by now that Cat Cora’s Restaurant Kouzzina, which is located at Disney’s Boardwalk Resort, will be closing it’s doors on September 30th of this year.

There has been a lot of rumors and speculation as to why it’s closing, well she recently addressed these questions in an interview.

She said: “We’re at the end of our contract, and Disney and I want to do more projects together. But this is a really great time for them to focus on a new concept in that space and I can focus on more restaurants around the world. It’s all good, and I’ll still be at the Epcot festival of food & wine this year.”

So that doesn’t give any exact reasons but at least her fans know she will not be disappearing from Disney anytime soon.

I am curious to see what Disney does with that space. What do you think?

Disney’s Golden Oak is Getting Bigger

golden oak

Wouldn’t it be a dream come true to live at Golden Oak. Not only because they are beautiful homes but because they are beautiful homes that are very close to Disney World! Now that is a win-win situation.

In case you don’t know Golden Oak is a gated community which happens to be inside Disney World’s huge 40-square-mile land. is expanding its neighborhood.  Golden Oak came fruition in 201o and it was the first time Disney has ever offered up the chance to live within it’s property. It is not totally finished yet but when it is it will have 8 neighborhoods which will have about 400 homes in each neighborhood. Of course Disney will not release the names of who has moved in already but 40 of the homes are already taken, some by CEO’s and a few NBA stars.

The homes range from $1.8 to $6 million. They are all custom built, of course. If you are lucky enough to afford a home there you get to pick from 7 different home-builders or you can hire your own. You can also choose to get your home fully furnished. Homes can also come fully furnished.

Marceline (named for Walt’s Missouri hometown) is the newest addition to the Golden Oak Family. It will have 56 home lots that are about one-quarter of an acre. The homes are built with upscale features like stone, copper and clay. The styles range from Mediterranean to Caribbean themed. In true Disney fashion there are subtle hidden Mickey’s in the homes.

Golden Oak homeowners get some awesome perks. They have have a concierge and security. They get access to the new Summer House, but that will cost you another $15,000 a year. There is also a bar, restaurant, lounge with 103-inch TV screen, outdoor pool and 17,000-square-foot fitness center. Residents also get a 3 year family pass to the park and door to door transportation.

Well sign me up! Oh wait, unfortunately my wallet says no!
