Man Loses Finger Tips on “Pirates of the Caribbean”

There is a reason why there are signs posted and announcements made that say “Please keep your hands, arms, feet and legs inside the vehicle”. On July 10th a man, on Pirates of the Caribbean,  lost the tips of his ring and pinky fingers on his right hand.

According to the Reedy Creek Fire Department the victim was an adult male from the U.K. He was taken to the hospital and did receive treatment.

How the accident happened is not really known but there are rumors that he had his hand in the water. The ride was shut down for about 5 hours and reopened at around 5:00 p.m.

Disney DIY – Throw A Disney Themed Baby Shower!

Shower Invite
Shower Invite

Shower Invite

There are plenty of reasons to celebrate in life – and making new life is a pretty exciting one in my book! What’s even better than celebrating a mom and dad to-be is to celebrate them DISNEY style! Disney makes a great theme for a baby shower – whether it be a specific character, or a movie, or even just a “Disney” or “Disney Princess” theme. How can you infuse some Disney into your Baby shower plans? Read on to find out!

Micket Party food 2

-Food – the best part of any party, shower, or gathering is definitely the food, right? For our purposes, let’s say you’re throwing a Mickey Mouse themed Baby Shower to celebrate a soon-to-be baby boy. One of the easiest things you can do is to make things Mickey shaped! A Mickey cookie cutter will be your best friend – cookies are an easy one, or you can do Rice Krispie treats, or brownies, or cakes (really any baked goods would taste even better shaped like Mickey, don’t you think?!). For a main course, you can cut bread and assorted deli meats/cheeses into Mickey shapes as well, or even just arranging serving bowls into Mickey head shapes adds to the theme too!

Mickey Party Cake

-Cake – What kind of baby shower would it be without some kind of sweet ending? Check out this awesome list of Disney Cake and Cupcake Recipes – featuring Tow Mater, Toy Story, Princesses, Beauty and the Beast, and much more! You’re sure to find something that will work for your baby shower’s theme on this list – and if not, a classic Mickey head (aka, two small circular cakes and one large one!) made from delicious chocolate cake is sure to please any and all crowds. Oh, and if it’s a girl and you want to make it a Minnie themed cake, then simply stick a bow on one of the ears (real or frosting!)

Shower Decor

-Décor – It’s not a baby shower without decorations! You can make a lot of these yourself – and they don’t need to be fancy. Streamers/tablecloths/napkins in coordinating character/movie colors (Black, white, red and yellow would be perfect for Mickey or Minnie!), and then some printed out pictures or signs to label the food/decorate the communal tables would be perfect. Centerpieces can be easy too – anything in those colors or little toys that match the theme are easy and quick to put together, or something cute like this Mickey and Minnie Diaper Cake is great if you’ve got the time (and skill!) . And If you aren’t super crafty, don’t worry – Party City can help you out – they have a ton of Disney themed decorations and coordinating cutlery/napkins/plates etc, so that could be an easy way to save a lot of time on shower planning

Krispie Treats

-Favors – I don’t know about you, but I always have trouble coming up with what to give as favors at baby or wedding showers – I always want to give something useful, but still cute, and edible if possible – but those don’t always end up coordinating perfectly! There are so many options out there that it’s hard to narrow it down – but I shall try! Some Disney baby shower favor ideas I really love are: Mickey shaped Rice Krispie Treats on a stick (decorated to look like the ones at the Parks with chocolate dipped ears and Mickey sprinkles, of course!), a cookie cutter for each guest, with an attached recipe for rolled sugar cookies (you could add a themed picture to the tag too) – ideas for this would be a star shaped cutter with a picture of Woody on the tag for a Toy Story Themed shower, or a dog shaped cookie cutter for a 101 Dalmations themed shower, or a snowflake shaped cutter for a Frozen shower (and the list goes on, really!). Another (easier!) idea for favors would be to order M&M’s in the theme’s colors and make little bundles of them for your guests

-Games – There’s always games at a baby shower, right? Some are more fun than others, and I personally love the idea of deviating from the standard/traditional shower games in favor of some DISNEY games! The easiest one to do would be Disney Trivia – a list of questions based on whatever your theme is (easily searchable online). Another fun game idea would be to do a Disney Movie title word jumble – mix up the letters of Disney movie titles and whoever gets the most right wins! Plenty of other Disney printables are available online, with a lot available on Pinterest too!

Anything goes here – just use your imagination!

But if you aren’t sure where to begin with your Disney Baby Shower planning, then think about the following questions:
-What’s the guest of honor’s favorite Disney movie/character?
-What did that character love to do?
-What did they eat in that movie?
-What colors does the character always wear?
-What is the one item that symbolizes that movie/character? (For example – Winnie The Pooh has his Hunny Pot, and the movie Cinderella can be summed up with a glass slipper!)

Once you have answers to these questions, you should have a handle on your theme, menu, favors, games, and décor, and can get to the planning! While these ideas are perfect for a Disney lover’s baby shower – you can also extend the ideas to a birthday party, sleepover, movie night, girl’s night, anything really!

Check out Pinterest for plenty of great party ideas – and while you’re there, you should definitely follow Chip and co all the latest and greatest of all things DISNEY!

Visiting Disney Rain or Shine!

rainyday

rainyday

“The rain, rain, rain came down, down, down
In rushing, rising riv’lets,
‘Til the river crept out of it’s bed
And crept right into Piglet’s!”

–Winnie the Pooh & The Blustery Day

Did you know that the climate for Central Florida is a sub tropical climate? What does that mean in layman’s terms? It means that there is a defined rainy season in Central Florida from June till September. This means that there is a chance of rain most days during the rainy season. Most days start off sunny with the heat of the day creating rain in the afternoons. But wait, that is when most of us can go to Disney, during summer break.

So should we not plan trips for Disney in the summer months? The answer to that is NO!

There are so many ways to enjoy Disney rain or shine! For our family, some of the best Disney memories were created wearing rain ponchos and riding rides over and over due to low crowds due to rain!

Here are some tips and advice to enjoy the parks during the rainy season.

  • As mentioned above, bring rain ponchos and have them with you at all times! I love the ones that are sold at the parks. They are light weight and pack easily plus they have the Disney logo on them. The Disney adult rain ponchos also fit over of most strollers.
  • We wear flip flops when doing the parks. This also makes it easier on the feet when it rains. No wet socks! But if you are a person who has to wear a type of shoe that requires socks, make sure to bring an extra pair of socks to change into.
  • A great thing about most of the Disney rides is that the queue areas are covered or indoors! Plus Disney has created interactive queues in a lot rides so if it’s raining outside, the odds are that you will be covered while waiting to ride a ride and you will be entertained while waiting.
  • If it’s raining take this time to shop and eat a snack! All the parks have plenty of indoor shopping and restaurants!
  • One thing I love about Disney World attractions is that a majority of them are indoors attractions so they are not affected by weather.

Here are a few examples of attractions that are not affected by rain:

  • Haunted Mansion
  • Tower Of Terror
  • Rock N Roller Coaster
  • Soarin’
  • Living with the Land
  • Splash Mountain
  • Buzz Lightyear
  • Pirates of the Caribbean
  • Mission Space
  • Maelstrom
  • Space Mountain
  • Toy Story Mania

So as you can see even in rainy season, there are lots of attractions that can still be enjoyed! With a little planning and a little patience, visiting Disney World during the rainy season can still be very enjoyable!

Beat That Disney Heat With These Top 5 Indoor WDW Attractions

IMG_7046

Summer at Disney means high temperatures, but even worse than that – it means high humidity too – and that means sticky, heavy air and the near certainty of daily afternoon showers – but luckily, all is NOT lost if you plan on visiting WDW in the summer – as there are plenty of INDOOR attractions/rides that will help keep you cool (Seriously though – I shudder to think how much WDW pays to air condition their property each summer!).

Check these out next time you need to chill out:

Dinosaur – This ride is located in Animal Kingdom’s Dinoland, and it takes you into the “Dino Institute” – where you travel 65 million years back in time to the Cretaceous period where you will encounter a meteor shower, plus plenty of larger than life dinos! The queue, waiting areas, and ride are all indoors, and even if the wait is long there’s quite a lot to see while you wait – fossils and photos, and multimedia shows as well as an intro before you board the Jeep-like vehicle for your trip back in time! This may seem like a pretty tame ride at the onset, but there are seat belts in the cars, and you will get jerked around quite a bit as you dodge the T-Rex

The Great Movie Ride – You enter this attraction on Hollywood Blvd at Disney’s Hollywood Studios through a replica of the famous Mann’s Chinese Theater, and as you weave through the queue, you can check out many genuine movie props and costumes, and there are even vintage film clips to keep you entertained too! You board long tram cars and then take a “ride into the movies!” where you will view some of the world’s most famous movie scenes – including the Wizard of Oz, Alien, Mary Poppins, and many more! This ride is great because not only is it ALL indoors, but the ride itself lasts a whopping 22 minutes! That means you get to sit and be entertained for nearly half an hour – an invaluable thing on a hot Florida day I think!

Test TrackEpcot’s Future World is home to this recently re-designed attraction, where you’ll find concept and new vehicles in the lobby area, and as you make your way through the line you will enter the Chevrolet Design Center – where you get to create your very own vehicle and put it to the test on the track! The ride cars seat 6, and they take you through – you guessed it – a “test track” where your car is put to speed, endurance, and heat tests – and much more! One thing to note is that a small portion of this ride does go outside, but it’s a very short outdoor ride and you’re going pretty fast during it anyway, so I personally still consider this an “indoor” ride. After the test is complete, you exit into a Chevrolet showroom complete with current models and salespeople to assist with any questions you might have. NOTE – I HIGHLY recommend you try and get a Fastpass for this attraction – wait times can creep up to two hours or more during peak times, and while I relish escaping the heat, two hours is a bit much for me!

Pirates Of The Caribbean – This is one of my family’s Magic Kingdom favorites – there’s rarely a long line, its dark and cool in the queue and ride areas, and hello – PIRATES?! Doesn’t get much better than that! Oh – and did you know that this attraction actually inspired the series of blockbuster movies starring Johnny Depp? It’s not often that a theme park ride inspires a movie – and what’s even better is once the movies were made, Disney made updates to include the new characters in the ride too! As you enter the ride queue, you’re taken down a long winding path with a lot of theming to check out along the way. Once you board your boat, you are taken into a Caribbean city port where there’s a raucous pirate takeover happening right before your eyes! The ride itself lasts about 8 minutes, and it takes you through several famous Pirates scenes (keep an eye out for Captain Jack Sparrow!) and while it may sound kind of scary, its really more fun and lively than frightening – perfect for the whole family!

Carousel of ProgressTomorrowland is home to this classic attraction – created by Walt itself, it features a rotating theater that takes you through the decades and eras of our past – and how we have come so far in the fields of electricity and technology in the past century. The first Act showcases the turn of the century, then you move to the 1920’s, then the 1940’s, then on to the 1990’s. The show itself is about 20 minutes long, and even though there’s hardly a wait, if there ever is one – I encourage you to stick it out and make sure you see this attraction! There are so few things that Walt himself fully created in the Parks – and I love the creativity and innovation he shows through this classic attraction

There are many more indoor attractions at the WDW Parks, but these are my personal favorites that help me beat that Florida heat. What about you – which rides do you escape to during those hot hot Disney days?

Planes: Fire & Rescue Press Event – “Do Your Research”

20140612 092451
20140612 092451

20140612_092451

Planes:  Fire & Rescue is the all new Disney sequel to Planes and premieres in movie theatres on July 18th.   Attending the media press event at Disney’s Toon Studios in Burbank, I was able to participate in several sessions of Q&As with Director Bobs Gannaway and Producer Ferrel Barron, Paul Gerard (Director, Creative Develoopment) and Jeff Howard (Co-Writer), Story Artists Art Hernandez (Head of Story) and Lawrence Gong and Art Director Toby Wilson.    Spending the day learning all about how Planes: Fire and Rescue came to be was an incredible experience.

The first session – Do Your Research was with Paul Gerard (Director, Creative Develoopment) and Jeff Howard (Co-Writer) who shared how one of their biggest resources was the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CALFIRE).   Extensive research was done at several National Parks and with key individuals who provided expertise about the aircraft and personnel.   Aircrafts used by CALFIRE are all recycled planes and that added to the movie’s concept of “second chances”.    The original concept was based on the duties of a crop duster and how they are also used to put out fires as a SEAT—a Single Engine Air Tanker.   This led to research that in turn led to the story line where Dusty gets into fire fighting.

Jeff and Paul shared how there are over 5000 fires fought in California every year, which was incorporated into the scene where Dusty arrives and almost immediately there is a fire alarm and Dusty is told there are always fires, but “you only hear about the big ones”.

The research team spent time on location the Hemet-Ryan Air Attack Base with CalFire at Yellowstone and Yosemite National Parks, and with the CALFIRE units and were able to capture live footage of the pilots and aircraft in action, however the team was not able to actually fly during a fire due to liability issues.  The pilots’ input and feedback was tremendous and invaluable in making sure Planes: Fire & Rescue were portrayed properly and authentically   Research and footage from Yosemite and Yellowstone were used in the movie, allowing for detailed designs used in the lobby of the Grand Fusal Lodge in the movie.    Another location used in filming was the Angeles National Forest.   Chuck Aaron, legendary aerobatic helicopter pilot who lives in So. Cal was instrumental in helping the artists capture the flight and manueverability of the helicopters.   Paul and Jeff along with Bobs and several other members of the team were able to fly with Chuck and be a part of a unique helicopter ride that was a once in a lifetime experience for all.

CalFire Battalion chief Travis Alexander was an inspiration for Blade’s personality in the movie as were many of the dedicated personnel – smokejumpers at the US Forestry Services, LA County and City Fire Departments and even the Walt Disney Studios Fire Department.
