History Of Disney: Would you like some tea?

This is the first of a weekly column that you will see here at Chip and Co. I will be exploring the history behind the rides of the Disney Theme Parks,  the Resorts, Restaurants and even the Special Events. When trying to decide where to start I had many people say I should start with the “mountains”. That seemed to me to be something that would be expected as those are fan favorites. I instead decided I would try to think of a ride that is an icon of the Disney Theme Parks and a ride that is in every Disney Theme Park. It is a ride that I remember seeing on TV in commercials and a ride that I knew I always wanted to ride. It is a ride that I have had fun on but have also gotten sick on (it all depends on who you ride it with).

That ride would be the Mad Tea Party.

Walt Disney Mad Tea Party

The Tea Cups as most people refer to them were at Disneyland on opening day it is one of the few remaining attractions from 1955. The ride itself  has undergone several refurbishments and changes since its inception. Each one has only made the ride a little bit better. To give you an idea of what the ride has looked like over the years here are a few pictures these images were taken from the amazing Disney History site Yesterland.com

The ride is now in a different place than it was opening day and it also has been given a make over. You may be more familiar with this version of the Mad Tea Party.

Mad Tea Party Disneyland

The ride is basically the same at all the Disney Theme Parks but the one in Disneyland is the only one that is not covered with some sort of roof. This makes it not operable in inclement weather but it does give it a beautiful look. All of the Mad Tea Party attractions were opening day attractions except for at Tokyo Disneyland.

The system of the ride is very basic. There are three turntables that each have 6 teacups on it. This turntable spins clockwise. All three of these turntables are on another turntable that holds the entire ride and it spins counter clockwise.

There were several versions of this ride that were on the drawing board…the one I found most interesting was it to be sort of like a race track with the tea cups. That might have made for an interesting ride.

The basic premise of the ride is that you have shrunk yourself similar to the way that Alice does in the film and you end up pouring yourself into a tea cup at the Mad Hatter’s tea party. It does not surprise me that Walt Disney would pick to have a ride based on Alice in Wonderland since had such a connection with the story for his entire career.

Another interesting fact about this ride is that the name for it is not the same at all the theme parks. The USA parks share the same name of Mad Tea Party however, at Tokyo Disneyland it is known as Alice’s Tea Party, at Disneyland Paris it is known as Mad Hatter’s Tea Cups and lastly at Hong Kong Disneyland it is Mad Hatter Tea Cups. I was unable to find the reasoning as to why there is a difference in the names from a credible source so I will not venture a guess.

When doing my research on the ride I decided to see if the tradition of having it in every Disney park would carry over into the not yet open Shanghai Disneyland and it looks as if it will not. There will be a ride of similar mechanics but it will be themed around Winnie the Pooh. Instead of Tea Cups guests will spin in Hunny (using the Winnie the Pooh Spelling) Pots. This struck me as interesting but I came to realize that Shanghai Disneyland is doing lots of things differently than the traditional Disney Theme Park.

Have you ever ridden the tea cups? Have you ever gotten motion sickness on the tea cups?  Here are a few tips to help you prevent that. First do not close your eyes, instead pick a point perhaps the center of the spinning wheel in the middle of your cup and keep your eyes on it. Doing this will cause you to not get dizzy or at least minimize how dizzy you get. Do not try to take pictures or video you will end up nauseous after. Make this one of the first or last rides you do if you are prone to motion sickness.

Believe it or not I have been to Walt Disney World and Disneyland and I have only ridden the tea cups at Magic Kingdom. I am not sure why I did not ride them at Disneyland when I was there. I do rather enjoy the tea cups but it is not a ride I do every time I am there. What about you?

Disney VoluntEARS Celebrate 2.5 million Back-to-School Donations

Disney Voluntears back to school

Mickey Mouse teamed up with Disney Voluntears at A Gift For Teaching to celebrate the success of their annual back to school drive.

Disney cast members collected 2.5 million school supplies that will help tens of thousands of children in the Central Florida area. Voluntears also devoted many hours to sorting and organizing all of these donations.

Disney’s Voluntears have long been a part of the community here in Central Florida. They support early learning all the way through college. The annual back to school drive was started in 2003 and has been a tradition ever since. I love how Disney is always spreading the magic.

Muppets Most Wanted Bluray Combo

The Muppets‘ latest adventure is now available to own on the Muppets Most Wanted Blu-ray Combo Pack! This film follows the Muppets on their world tour. Unknown to the Muppets, the evil frog Constantine tries to replace Kermit in order to steal the crown jewels in London.

As with any Muppets film, Muppets Most Wanted is sure to become a family favorite. In addition to your favorite characters such  as Kermit, Miss Piggy, Fozzie, and  Gonzo, this film also stars Ricky Gervais, Tina Fey, and Ty Burrell. There is also no shortage of celebrity cameos. The  movie’s catchy soundtrack will have you singing along with the Muppets.  Muppets Most Wanted will be a great addition to your family’s Blu-ray collection.

In addition to the film itself, the Muppets Most Wanted Blu-ray Combo Pack is filled with several entertaining bonus features. Among those is the Unnecessarily Extended Edition of the film which features 12 minutes of additional scenes from your favorite Muppets.

My personal favorite of the Muppets Most Wanted bonus features is the Waldorf & Statler Cut of the film. These cynical Muppets went through all of the Muppet Most Wanted and put together their perfect version of this film. As you can imagine, the Waldorf & Statler version isn’t very long and their favorite part seems to be the end. You’ll definitely want to take a look at this cut of Muppets Most Wanted!

What would a Muppets movie be without the bloopers? The Muppets Most Wanted Blu-ray Combo Pack just happens to feature The  Longer, Longest Blooper Reel In Muppets History! It’s filled with tons of laughs including an impression of Ricky Gervais’ laugh you won’t want to miss.

The entertaining story of the film, the wonderfully catchy music, the lovable characters, celebrity cameos, and hilarious bonus features make the Muppets Most Wanted Blu-ray Combo Pack a must have for any Muppets fan!

Top 10 Rides for Toddlers and Babies

figment

small world

Sometimes, parents who take their small children to Walt Disney World are met with curious comments such as, “They are too little for the rides,” or “There isn’t much there for babies.” Don’t fret! There is actually a lot of rides and attractions that are perfectly suitable and accommodating for toddlers and babies.  There are even fun dining experiences you can have with tiny tots! Disney is designed for families of all ages. Sure, there are some rides with height requirements that your little ones won’t be able to ride, but there are plenty that are designed with the littlest of visitors in mind. Here is a list of the top ten rides that babies and toddlers can go on at Walt Disney World:

10. The Seas with Nemo and Friends: ride in a clam shell car through an aquarium show featuring your favorite sea creatures from the animated film as well as sea life from Epcot’s Living Seas.

9. Under the Sea: Journey of the Little Mermaid is also a clam shell car ride. Travel gently through Ariel’s story as you experience all your favorite moments and music from the classic animated film (New Fantasyland, Magic Kingdom).

8. Triceratops Spin: this gentle ride takes you and your little one on an elevated carousel of triceratops dinosaurs. (Dinoland USA, Animal Kingdom)

7. Prince Charming’s Regal Carousel is a classic ride for all ages. Some horses do not rise up and down, and there are also benches that remain stable during the relaxing ride. (Behind Cinderella’s Castle in Fantasyland, Magic Kingdom)

6. Gran Fiesta featuring the Three Caballeros: A very gentle boat ride that highlights Mexican heritage and culture as you search for Donald Duck while helping his two feathered friends, Jose Carioca and Panchito Pistoles. (Mexico pavilion, World Showcase, Epcot)

5. Journey Into Imagination with Figment is a ride that teaches about your five senses as you join the friendly purple dragon (named Figment) on a tour of the Imagination Labs. Warning: the song, One Little Spark” is very catchy and you might find yourself humming it throughout the day.

4. The Jungle Cruise is an outdoor, slow boat ride that features animatronic wildlife and indigenous people described to you by a tour guide who tells undoubtedly hilarious jokes throughout your journey into the wild jungles. (Adventureland, Magic Kingdom)

3. Dumbo the Flying Elephant is perhaps the most iconic and classic ride for all ages that visit Walt Disney World. Fly with Dumbo and make magical memories! (Storybook Circus, New Fantasyland, Magic Kingdom)

When Elephants Fly

2. Peter Pan’s Flight: “Hold on tight, here we gooooo!” Join Peter Pan and Wendy on an adventure through all your favorite scenes and music from the classic Disney animated film as you ride above London and Neverland in your very own pirate ship! (Fantasyland, Magic Kingdom)

1. It’s a Small World is a must for all families visiting Walt Disney World. This boat ride takes you through colorful, vibrant rooms of singing and dancing animatronic dolls dressed in traditional cultural and ethnic attire as they sing the catchy tune “It’s a Small World” in several different languages. Just try not to sing along!

Its-a-Small-World-Disney-World

There are plenty more rides that are suitable for babies and toddlers; these are just a few of my favorites that I have fond memories of riding with my own children when they were very young. What rides do you like to take your little ones on?

Dressing For Disney – Things To Bring (And Things To Skip!)

Suitcases
Suitcases

Suitcases

There is a LOT of planning that goes into a Walt Disney World vacation – and one of the things that’s always on my “Disney to-do” list is to figure out what I’m going to pack – and more specifically what I want to WEAR while I’m at WDW! Weather, comfort, and style all come into play here – and I have come up with a pretty solid list of things to bring and wear that will actually help make your WDW more enjoyable:

Things To Bring: These are things that you will 100% want to pack, as they will be invaluable as you spend long days at the Parks. Sunscreen is #1 on the list (and make sure you USE it – like multiple times a day – as that Florida sun can be a killer – even if it is overcast), sneakers – which you’ll want to wear pretty much all the time so make sure if they are newer sneakers you break them in before your trip, rain ponchos – which can be purchased at Target, Walmart, and there are even disposable ones for sale at dollar stores (you never know when a rainshower might hit, and you will want to be prepared! The stores sell ponchos, but it’s cheaper and more convenient to bring them along). Sunglasses – as no one wants to spend all day squinting, am I right? And last but not least – make sure to pack a hat – whatever style you prefer, as long as it protects your head from the sun (I know, I know – not everyone likes or looks good in hats, but it’s better than a sunburned scalp – trust me!)

Things To Make: I love LOVE the shirts and other clothes for sale at the WDW Parks, but let’s be honest – some of it can get pricey, and if you’re at all crafty this is a great chance to create some unique shirts for you and your family – check out some DIY shirt ideas here, or check out Pinterest for ideas too. “First Trip” ones are cute for kids, and this is also a great way to make sure your kids have bright, colorful shirts that stand out in a crowd should they get separated from you

Things To Buy: Disney merchandise is EVERYWHERE these days – I tend to see a lot of it at stores like Walmart and Target – and these are great places to stock up on cute clothes and accessories for your trip! T shirts are often available in mens, womens, and kids sizes, as well as plenty of other kids clothing featuring their favorite Disney characters (especially if a Disney movie was recently released, for example, stores are full of Frozen gear right now!), and accessories like socks and sunglasses are often for sale too. You can also pick up fun trinkets for the kids to keep them entertained on the trip to Disney – coloring and picture books, stickers, little toys, and more!

Things To Skip: Ok so there are some things you should definitely NOT bring with you to WDW, and number one on this list for me is sandals/flip flops – they are cute and I know no one wants to put on socks and sneakers on a 90 degree day, but you will definitely regret it if you decide to spend 12 hours walking around the Parks in flip flops – they are uncomfortable and offer no support, and this tip is especially important for parents with small kids – don’t even pack them for the kids – as no one wants to hear the temper tantrum that blisters and sore feet will bring – trust me on this. I also don’t generally bother with dress clothes or sundresses or anything of that sort – as there really are few places to wear them (plus, they don’t really go very well with my sneakers…), and the only real exception to this is if you’re heading to a fancy celebratory dinner, in which case I would pack only one nice outfit, wear it to dinner, and then repack it – no need to be fancy or dressed up at the Parks! Tank Tops/Halter tops are another item I stay away from toting along, since it just is basically inviting a sunburn to plant itself right on your shoulders and back, and then I also skip thick or dark shirts – as they tend to absorb heat and increase sweating – light, loose, and thin are the best kind of shirts to wear

For those of you who have already visited WDW, you probably can relate to at least some of these tips, and hopefully those of you who haven’t been to the most Magical Place On Earth – what are you waiting for? But seriously – I hope these tips can help you be better packed and more comfortable on your WDW vacation
