Why Stay at a Disney World Value Resort?

aoa

When planning a Disney vacation, one of the very first things that you have to decide is where you are going to stay. Walt Disney World, and the surrounding Orlando area, offer so many different options and it can be overwhelming. Disney breaks their resorts down into three main categories (based on price): Value, Moderate, and Deluxe.

Throughout my numerous Disney experiences, I have stayed at a number of resorts ranging from All Star Sports to The Grand Floridian. Deluxe Resorts are fantastic, but there is still definitely something to be said for the Value Resorts.

Here are my top five reasons why you should consider staying at a Disney Value Resort.

Cost: Obviously, these are called Value Resorts for a reason. Starting at around $88/per night (price depends on the season), these resorts are easy on the bank account. Let’s face it, a Disney vacation is not cheap, and although there are tons of different ways to save money at Disney, my number one tip is to stay at a Value Resort if you are travelling on a budget.

Disney Experience: Just because you are saving money by booking a Value Resort doesn’t mean that you have to give up any of the perks of staying at a Disney Resort. All Value Resorts still include complimentary airport pick up and drop off through the Disney Express bus. No need to worry about collecting your bags or hailing a cab – just let the Disney Express do it all for you! Value Resorts also include complimentary transportation to and from all of the Disney Parks. You will also receive the same care and dedication from the Value Resorts Cast Members as you would if you booked a more expensive resort option.

Spending All Day in the Parks: When I go to Disney, I spend my whole day at the parks. I like to arrive just before the park opens and I usually stay until the park closes. Because of this, I really only use my resort for sleeping. If you are planning on spending the large majority of your time in the parks, why spend the money for all the extras that come with a Moderate or Deluxe Resort? Consider how you plan on spending your trip and let this help you make your decision on what type of resort to book.

Themeing: The Value Resorts are filled with larger than life throughout the properties to help bring the magic of Disney themeing to the area. Moderate and Deluxe resorts usually feature more subtle themeing, and a more cohesive story told through the design. The large icons and figures at the Value Resorts are usually a big hit with kids, and they offer great places to stop and take a photo. The Value Resorts are also decked out in more bright and bold colors than many of the other resorts on property.

Mickey PhoneBig Wheel

Dining: Each Value Resort features its own food court, so you are never far away from a good meal. The food courts offer a wide variety of choices, so you can be sure that you will be able to find something that entices you. All Value Resort food courts are Quick Service Dining, and include in the Disney Quick Service Dining Plan. You won’t find a fancy sit down dinner at a Value Resort, but you will find quality food, a large variety, low prices, and quick service.

When choosing which Disney Resort to book for your vacation, consider what it is you are looking for. Do you want a place to relax and unwind after just a few hours in the park each day, or do you want a place to crash after you hit the parks hard for 13 hours? Are you looking for a resort with a number of different restaurants and dining options, or do you want a resort that provides quick and easy food without all the fuss?

“High School Musical” Stars reunite to celebrate the 10 year anniversary of the global sensation in a special telecast of the original movie Wednesday, January 20 8:00 pm EST on the Disney Chanel!

Members of the cast from the popular movie reuniting for this special anniversary include Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Tisdale, Lucas Grabeel, Corbin Bleu and Monique Coleman. The group taped nostalgic segments to air during the 10 year anniversary telecast at a high school gymnasium in suburban Los Anegeles. The gym was fulled decked out in East High Wild Cats decor that gave it a feel of being right back in the movie 10 years ago! Although Zac Efron isn’t on the special segments during the movie, he will still join the telecast through a special pre-taped message to High School Musical fans.

Radio Disney’s Ernie D also interviewed the cast, for a special to be seen during a “Radio Disney Insider” presented Thursday January 21 on the Disney Channel and the Radio Disney app.

If you miss the first telecast don’t worry, repeats of the telecasts of the movie and the sequel “High School Musical 1” will be presented Thursday, January 21 and Sunday, January 24 on Disney Channel. ABC Family now known as Freeform will present “High School Musical” on Saturday, January 23 at 4:30 PM EST and Sunday, January 24 at 2:00 pm.

Gary Marsh, President adn Chief Creative Office of Disney Channels Worldwide said:

“Seeing the cast of High School Musical back together again reaffirms what made it special 10 years ago. It’s their optimism, their dedication and their extraordinary talent –as a group– that made this such an exceptional movie and cultural phenomenon. ten years later, the movie continues to delight audiences around the globe, not just for it’s memorable song and dance numbers, but for it’s universal themes that continue to resonate with fans everywhere – express yourself, believe in yourself and always follow your dreams.”

The now iconic Disney Channel Original Movie premiered January 20, 2006 delivering 7.7 million total viewed in the U.S.! At the time, the highest ratings for any telecast ever on Disney Channel. Around the word that year alone, it reached over 100 million unduplicated viewers. This fondly remembered movie also broke new ground as the first ever TV movie soundtrack to reach #1 on the Billboard Top 200 chart, and went on to become the #1 album of 2006 as well as the #1 soundtrack and #1 Kids’ album of that year.

This is such an exciting event, and I for one can not wait! Were you a fan of High School Musical? Who else will be watching this special telecast?

How to Thank the Disney Cast Members for Great Service

castmembers
castmembers

how to thank CMs

One of the reasons I love to visit so often and spend all my vacations at Walt Disney World is the wonderful service provided by the Disney Cast Members! That’s really what keeps us coming back again and again. Sure, we all love Disney – the movies, the characters, the rides at the theme parks – but if the employees of the Disney parks and resorts treated us poorly, I doubt we would be returning year after year, as many of us loyal fans do. If you spend any amount of time there, I’m sure you will notice how hard the Cast Members work, what a great job they do, and how much fun they seem to have while doing it!

To me, they seem to genuinely enjoy working there, being a part of the magic, and to take pride in putting smiles on guests’ faces. This is mainly because they are mostly big Disney fans themselves, just like you and me! For many of them, working there is a dream come true, thanks to a strong fondness for Disney and most likely a history of good experiences from their own childhood visits. Since they do so much for us to create all of the Disney magic we have come to expect, it’s only right that we make an effort to recognize them for their good deeds and truly exceptional service!

It is customary to tip many of the Cast Members at the Disney resorts, such as the valet drivers, bellmen, and housekeepers (aka “mousekeepers“), and of course, any of the restaurant servers at the table service restaurants. However, the Cast Members that work in the theme parks are not allowed to accept tips or gifts. So here are some meaningful ways you can acknowledge them for helping to make your vacation more magical:

Visit Guest Relations & Fill Out a Comment Card –  The perfect way to say a very big thank you to that helpful Cast Member is to visit the Guest Relations lobby on your way out of the park and ask for a “Great Service Fanatic” comment card. You’ll want to make sure you do your best to remember their name and hometown as displayed on their name tag, but no worries if you aren’t sure of it. If you can at least write exactly where and when you encountered them, with a brief description of what they look like, they should hopefully be able to track them down with no problem based on the records. Write on the card about what that special Cast Member did for you and how much you appreciated it. It will go directly to that person’s manager to be seen and signed, and goes into their file. This type of official, documented feedback from guests counts in a very big way when Cast Members have performance evaluations. It actually helps them to get promotions! They even enter the cards into drawings in order for these great Cast Members to win prizes! How cool is that?

Call or Write an Email to Guest Communications – If you prefer, or if you have already left Disney and traveled back home, you can call or send your positive comments to them through mail or email. Here is the contact information you will need:

Create Your Own Cast Member Appreciation Cards – If you’re feeling really inspired and creative, you can create some personalized thank you cards at home, before you leave for your Disney trip, to hand out to any Cast Members that make a magical moment happen for you during your vacation. There are lots of ideas and designs online if you look around. Here are some fun examples I found:

  • Use an image of Buzz Lightyear with the phrase “Thanks for going above……and beyond!”
  • Use an image of the Incredibles with the phrase “You were truly incredible!”
  • Use an image of Tinkerbell with the phrase “Thank you for the pixie dust!”
  • Use an image of the castle or a Disney princess with the phrase “Thank you for making us feel like royalty”
  • Or to keep it sweet and simple, you could just say “Thank you for making our day even more magical!” with an image of Mickey

Then be sure to include your name on the back side of the card with “from the (insert your last name here) family.” If you want, you can even include your hometown and the date/year of your trip, or even better – you can leave blank space in which to really personalize it with a handwritten note and/or signature. Any Cast Member is sure to be flattered and delighted to receive such a wonderful, thoughtful token from you.

All of these ways to give your special thanks can be very empowering for a Cast Member to receive from you, so please, show them some love! As I said before, your feedback can really help them get promoted into better positions, and perhaps even be nominated for the Legacy Award by their co-workers! One of the highest, most prestigious honors a Cast Member can be given is the Walt Disney Legacy Award for excellence in representing the values prized by Walt – “dream, create, and inspire” – and superior performance standards. Guest satisfaction weighs as a large factor in meeting the criteria to be awarded such an honor. These special Cast Members can be distinguished from others by their royal blue name tags. While dining recently at the Garden Grill in Epcot, we had the pleasure of being served by Joann, a Legacy award recipient. When I mentioned to her that I noticed she had a blue Legacy name tag and gave her my congratulations, she told me all about how wonderful it was to be awarded, and how Disney threw quite a spectacular party for them. She said it was so incredible, it felt like she was at the Grammys!

*I want to say a special thanks to Stephanie from Kissimmee, FL and John from Upland, CA, who are the fabulous Cast Members featured in the image above that I had the pleasure of meeting and chatting with at Club Disney in Hollywood Studios. Thanks for letting me take your photo and use it for this article! We had lots of fun with you at Club Disney that day!

Have you received exceptional service or experienced a magical moment created by a Cast Member while vacationing at a Disney park or resort? Please let us know about it in the comments section below! Thanks for reading.

For the second year in a row Fountain Valley, California, native Nick Arciniaga won the Star Wars Half Marathon at the Disneyland Resort. This year he won with a record-setting time of 1:05:49! Adam Roach of Pebble Beach, Calif., came in second (1:12:29) and Hunter Sapienza of Seattle, Wash., was third (1:12:38).

SWH winner

“This is a race that means a lot to me,” Arciniaga said of the victory. “I’ve been a Star Wars fan ever since I can remember.” Arciniaga will be competing in the U.S. Olympic Team Trials Marathon in the upcoming weeks.

Annie Bersagel of Colorado was the female winner with a time of 1:15:09. She is also set to compete in the upcoming U.S. Olympic Team Trials Marathon. Second-place female finisher was 2015 Star Wars Half Marathon female winner, Jennifer Berry, of Denver, Colo. (1:21:11) and third-place finisher was Kendal Sager of Los Altos, Calif. (1:25:05).

SWH female winner

“I was the fastest stormtrooper out here today,’’ Bersagel joked after her win, clad in Star Wars-inspired running gear. “So that’s all you can really ask for, right?”

Arciniaga and Bersagel outran more than 13,000 athletes in the 13.1-mile intergalactic journey through Disneyland Resort and Anaheim area streets.

The Star Wars Half Marathon Weekend included several events including a three-day Health and Fitness Expo that showcased the latest in fitness apparel, running gear and high tech gadgets. This is the first runDisney event of the year at the Disneyland Resort. There were races for all skill levels, from Padawans to Jedi Masters. Younglings ages 8 and under were able to participate in Kids Races. There was the Star Wars 5k, Star Wars 10k and the Star Wars Half Marathon. Some Star Wars Rebels put their endurance to the test and competed in the Star Wars Rebel Challenge – a two-race challenge that combined the Star Wars 10k on Saturday with the Star Wars Half Marathon on Sunday.

Walt Disney Films Nominated for 15 Academy Awards!

inside out1
inside out1

pixar

Walt Disney Studios has released some of the best record breaking films in 2015.  Based on the 15 nominations by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, it looks like it is not only Disney Addicts who love these films.   The announcement for the the 88th Oscars® included some expected and unexpected nominations for this Entertainment Reporter.

Here is a quick list of the nominations:

  • Best Picture – Bridge of Spies
  • Actor in a Supporting Role – Mark Rylance, Bridge of Spies
  • Animated Feature Film – Inside Out
  • Costume Design – Cinderella
  • Film Editing – Star Wars: The Force Awakens
  • Original Score – Bridge of Spies and Star Wars: The Force Awakens
  • Production Design – Bridge of Spies
  • Animated Short Film – Sanjay’s Super Team
  • Sound Editing – Star Wars: The Force Awakens
  • Sound Mixing – Bridge of Spies and Star Wars: The Force Awakens
  • Visual Effects – Star Wars: The Force Awakens
  • Original Screenplay – Bridge of Spies and Inside Out

Star Wars: The Force Awakens by Lucasfilm received five nominations. Composer John Williams commented the following on receiving his 50th nomination, “I’m deeply honored and grateful to the Academy for this recognition. It’s been a privilege and a joy to revisit the Star Wars galaxy and to work with the brilliant director J.J. Abrams on this very special film,”

One of my favorites, Disney•Pixar’s animated feature Inside Out received two nominations.  Director, Pete Docter, and producer, Jonas Rivera, stated, “We are beyond grateful to the Academy for honoring us with these nominations—especially in a year with so many fantastic movies. On behalf of the cast, crew and team at Pixar we would like to say… THANK YOU! We’re lucky to work at a studio that allows us to make movies that are colorful, fun, personal—and emotional.”

The cute and heart tugging, Sanjay’s Super Team was part of and I know will win, the Animated Short Film category. “It is a great honor to be recognized by the Academy with a nomination for our short, Sanjay’s Super Team.   “This is an incredibly personal, but also other-worldly, story that was as much a labor of love for our crew as it was for myself. Making a film about my own childhood, and exploring the space that separates a young boy from his traditional immigrant father, meant that everyone really had to trust my vision, and the result is a truly beautiful film. So I share this honor with the crew, my true Super Team,” director Sanjay Patel said.

Disney’s live-action Cinderella, which starred the beautiful Lily James and handsome Richard Madden earned the very appropriate nomination for the incredible costume designs by Sandy Powell.

Director Steven Spielberg, brought us Dreamworks/Fox 2000’s Bridge of Spies, the story of Brooklyn lawyer James Donovan (Tom Hanks), which brought in six nominations.

The Oscars which airs live on Sunday, February 28, 2016  starting at 4:00 pm (PT) / 7:oo pm (ET) is going to be huge this year.

Chipandco.com and the Disney Addicts congratulate The Walt Disney Company and all the nominees.

Freaky Friday Hits The Stage In October 2016

Freaky Friday Movie

Walt Disney Pictures movie based on a story by Mary Rodgers was a hit in 1972, starring Jodie Foster and Barbara Harris.  The remake in 2003, starred Lindsey Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis.   The story of  a hardworking mom and typical teen daughter who through the magic of storytelling swap bodies for a day, gave many of us a look into the what if I had to deal with someone else’s day?

Fans will now be happy to know that Freaky Friday will be heading to the stage. The Disney Theatrical Production along with Director, Christopher Ashley and choreographer, Sergio Trujillo, will bring the musical comedy to audiences this fall.

The limited engagement will be held at the Signature Theatre in Arlington, VA, October 4th through November 13th. Although no information yet on who will be cast, we have fingers crossed and pixie dust going out for our favorites.   Who do you want to see in the lead roles?

Pop-Tastic Pop Century – Review of Disney’s Pop Century Resort

Pop Century sign
Pop Century sign

Pop Century sign

During our Walt Disney World Vacation in October, we chose to stay at Disney’s Pop Century Resort. I had never stayed at Pop Century before, and I was excited for the chance to explore this resort.

Previously, when choosing a value resort, I have always gone with one of the All Star Resorts. After a couple of stays at All Star, I knew what to expect from them and I was always comfortable with that decision. However, on this last vacation, when I was actually able to book our trip, all of the All Star Resorts were full, and being on a tight budget, I was forced to branch out of my comfort zone.

On the Walt Disney World website, the following description of the resort is given:

“Experience the unforgettable fads of the 1950s through the 1990s all over again. From yo-yos and Play-Doh® to Rubik’s Cube® and rollerblades, this Resort hotel salutes the timeless fashions, catch phrases, toys and dances that captivated the world through the decades.”

Now, being a kid in the 1990s, I was not very enthused to relive that time period. However, when booking your room at Pop Century, you have the opportunity to request a certain “decade” that you would like to stay in. You can also choose preferences such as a room close to transportation, or a room close to the lobby.

I made my preferences (I opted for an early check-in option rather than choosing a specific building to request), and we did not have to relive the 90s. Instead, we relived the 1980s.

Pop Century 2

Disney’s Pop Century Resort features three different pools! Described on the Disney World website:

“Immerse yourself in the spirit of the 1960’s at the sprawling Hippy Dippy Pool, which features flower-shaped water jets. For the little ones, a kiddie pool area with a pop-jet water fountain is located nearby. Two more pools, the smaller 1950’s Bowling Pool and the 1990’s Computer Pool, are also on hand for Guests looking to take the pop-culture plunge.”

Our room was nearest to the 1990’s Computer Pool.

Computer Pool

We took advantage of this pool during two different evenings, and during each swim, there were only a very small handful of other guests in the pool. We swam around 8pm each time and I never counted more than ten other people.

I enjoyed that we were close to one of the smaller pools, as many guests took advantage of the larger Hippy Dippy Pool instead of venturing to the others. Each night, guests can also take advantage of a movie under the stars at the Hippy Dippy Pool.

Mickey Phone  Big Wheel

Walking around the resort, you are greeted by larger than life pop icons such as Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head, giant Foosball players, and a Big Wheel. The themeing is fun, and exploring the different decade areas was a nice way to pass a quiet evening at the resort. However, I did feel that Pop Century lacked in Disney themeing quite a bit.

Potato Heads

Our actual room was very clean and comfortable, and featured art of Disney merchandise from the 1980s. The carpet and wallpaper featured some subtle hidden Mickeys, but again, I felt like the Disney themeing was a little lacking here.

Our room came with two full size beds, and being exhausted at the end of each day, it was nice to have a bed to ourselves and to be able to stretch out! However, if you are traveling with children and not as just a couple, this room could easily sleep a family of 4 (2 adults and 2 children).

The lobby of Pop Century is spacious and welcoming. Every Cast Member that I encountered was very helpful and always had their Disney smile on! For one day of our trip, we had planned to visit Universal Studios, and the front desk was very helpful in arranging transportation for us. Before our trip, I was a little worried about asking a Disney Cast Member to help me arrange transportation to “the other theme park,” but the concierge was very helpful and even recommended the transportation provider that would provide us with the best rate and service.

pop

More than just filled with helpful Cast Members, the main building of Pop Century is home to “Everything Pop Shopping and Dining.”

The gift store was well stocked with a variety of items – including alcohol. I was able to find a resort exclusive Pop Century pin here, which I was really excited about.

The main building holds a full Quick Service restaurant, complete with several different stations to get all different types of food. Sandwiches, pizza, chicken, burgers, pasta – there is really something for every taste bud here.

One night we were adventurous and decided to try the Elvis Cupcake. Chocolate cake filled with a banana puree, topped with peanut butter frosting and crumbled bacon. Usually, we would have stayed clear, but we were on vacation and had Snack Credits to spare! And guess what? It was delicious!! Seriously, this was one of the best cupcakes I have ever had.

Elvis Cupcake

So let’s see, we’ve covered the pools, the rooms, the shopping, and the food. Ah yes, just one more note about transportation.

My number one complaint and tip for staying at Pop Century is to leave plenty of time for transportation. There is only one bus stop at this resort (located outside the main building) and the lines can get pretty long in the mornings. If you have early dining reservations or are trying to make it to a park for rope drop, leave your hotel room at least an hour early! Also, each night it seemed like every single guest leaving the park was also staying at Pop Century and the line to take the bus back to the resort was always the longest resort line – by far! As we left Magic Kingdom one night, we waited in the bus line for over an hour! Just be prepared and know that you may have to wait in line for transportation longer than you would at another resort.

Overall, we had a great experience at Pop Century. If you are traveling to Disney World on a budget, I would definitely suggest giving this resort some consideration.

My Favorite Part: the convenience and the price. Everything that we needed, our resort provided and the friendly and helpful staff rivaled those at more pricey Disney resorts.

My Least Favorite Part: long waits for transportation. Be prepared to wait! We traveled during a slow time of year for Disney World and still waited in line for a bus for 45 minutes or longer each night to return to our resort.

Have you stayed at Disney’s Pop Century Resort before? What did you like about it? Any complaints? I would love to hear your reviews in the comments!
