15 Free Things at Walt Disney World

Spread
Spread

Club Cool

I love a good deal and in the past I’ve covered a lot of ways to save money at Disney. Splitting dessert, shopping at the dollar store before your trip, packing snacks – there are so many to save money on your trip. But what is better than free? Nothing! Free souvenirs and experiences at Disney are bountiful if you know where to look.

Here are my top 15 favorite free things at Walt Disney World.

Transportation: If you are staying at a Disney resort, transportation to and from the airport is free when you use the Magical Express bus. Taking a taxi can cost you more than $30.00, so this is defitinely as awesome perk to take advantage of. Once you arrive at your resort, Disney provides free transportation to all of their parks. Whether you choose to take the bus, the monorail, or a boat – it’s all free!

Magical Express

Movies Under the Stars: this is something that is available at every Disney resort. Each night, usually pool side, each resort hosts a Movie Under the Stars where you can curl up and relax while watching your favorite Disney classics. Grab some snacks and enjoy the show.

Electrical Water Pageant: this music and light show takes place nightly on the Seven Seas Lagoon. If you are staying at Contemporary, Grand Floridian, or Polynesian you can step out on the lawn of your resort (or watch out the window if you room faces the lagoon) and watch the spectacle. If you aren’t staying at these resorts, you can catch it from the bus loading area at Magic Kingdom too.

Package Delivery: if you hate lugging around your purchases all day, Disney has you covered! Every store at Walt Disney World can either hold your items for you at Guest Relations until the end of your day, or ship your purchases to your resort – for free! The only stipulations are that you cannot ship any food items (fudge, cotton candy, etc.), and in order to ship to your resort, you cannot be checking out the previous day (to ensure that your packages have time to arrive before you leave). I use this service all the time!

Wifi: All Disney parks and resorts now have free guest Wifi. No more data overage charges once you get back home. Yay!

Disney Resorts H2O Products: Every single night before I go to bed, I squirrel away all of the travel size toiletries that Mousekeeping left that day. The next morning, when they see that I don’t have any products, they leave more – it’s like FREE magic! These make for good (and practical!) souvenirs.

Celebration Pins: Everyday at Disney is a reason to celebrate, so show off your celebrations with free pins. You can ask your resort front desk or go to Guest Relations at any park and ask for them. They have pins for everything from birthdays, to first visits, to anniversaries, to family reunions, to engagements/weddings/honeymoons, or just a simple “I’m Celebrating” pin so you can fill in your own occasion.

button

Park Maps: As I’m leaving the park I always grab a few (ok, a handful) of park maps on my way out. These are great souvenirs and I love to use them in scrapbooks and shadow boxes to highlight our vacation memories. If you are crafty, you can even make hair bows or coin purses with park maps.

Stickers: it seems like Cast Members are always handing these out – and I always take them! Use the free Mickey Mouse stickers in photo albums, or tuck them into lunchboxes for little magic once you are home.

Photopass Photography: these photographers are located all throughout the parks, in prime picture opportunity locations. They will take your photo for free and load it on to your magic band where you can review and purchase it later. They will also take your photo with your own camera or phone for free! No need to always have one family member missing from every picture, Photopass Photographers are more than happy to make sure everyone is included.

Water: Thirsty? No problem! You can get FREE water at any Quick Service dining location – just ask. I also like to bring a water bottle with me and refill throughout the day at drinking fountains. Why break the bank buying $3.00 water bottles all day when you can stay hydrated for free?

Club Cool: Head into Club Cool (located in Epcot’s Future World) to try samples of different Coca-Cola products from around the world. If you are travelling with a first timer – make sure to have them try the Beverly! You can have as many samples as you want for free at the serve your stations in the middle of the store.

Art Classes: Head over to Disney’s Art of Animation Resort for free art classes teaching you how to draw some of your favorite Disney characters. These sketches make great souvenirs and it’s a nice way to get away from the hustle and bustle for the parks for a moment.

Wake Up Call: You can schedule a wake-up call with your resort and a Disney character will call you to you wish a good morning. What a fun way to start the day!

Pin Trading: The pins aren’t free, but the trading is. And really, the trading is the fun part! During our last trip I had so much fun hunting for pins and talking to all the different Cast Members.

Like I said, there are so many free things at Disney! Whether you are traveling on a tight budget or just love a good bargain, Walt Disney World is great for making magic. What are some of your favorite freebies at Disney?

The celebration of The Wonderful World of Disney: Disneyland 60 will have several top notch performers as part of the TV Special.  Topping the list is Sir Elton John.  The two hour special which will air on ABC Television, February 21st at 8 :00 pm is being taped over a period of several days at the Disneyland Resort.   Visitors to the parks were treated to a special surprise concert Friday evening which included one of my favorites, “Circle of Life” from The Lion King and a new song from his upcoming album.

“It was a surprise for most of our guests,” park spokesperson, Suzi Brown said.  Social Media was overloaded with photos and videos showing the Grammy award-winning artist playing on his red grand piano in front of Sleeping Beauty Castle.

Your favorite Entertainment Reporter missed this special concert and will have to wait for the TV special to enjoy Sir Elton John’s performance. Follow us on our website www.chipandco.com for updates and news of new performers being added to the special.

According to wdwmagic.com, Disney Springs is making fast progress on the construction of World of Coca-Cola. It is being built right next to Planet Hollywood and is next to the entrance from the Orange Parking Garage.

There is some speculation on what will be included at this location. The headquarters of World of Coca-Cola in Atlanta, Georgia offers a wide assortment of things to check out including:

Disney Springs has been adding lots of new things to see and do and I”m excited to see what this new experience will bring. What do you hope to see included at World of Coca-Cola?

Swan

The Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Hotel has become among the first convention hotels in the country to permanently introduce the latest in Wi-Fi technology, offering groups fast and reliable internet service capable of handling the largest and most technological demanding groups with ease.

The new technology, referred to as high-density Wi-Fi, was pioneered at the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Hotel by event internet service provider and hotel partner, XpoNet. After successful tests among some of the world’s leading technology groups, the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Hotel has permanently installed the system, making it available to groups of all sizes. With the installation, the hotel becomes the largest convention hotel in Florida, to implement this technology.

The new high-density Wi-Fi system is capable of providing groups of more than 15,000 attendees with strong, fast and, perhaps most importantly, reliable internet service. A full back-up system employs the use of multiple internet providers so any outages from one particular provider will go unnoticed by attendees.

“Streaming broadcasts of keynote speeches, video conferencing and multiple personal internet devices used by every attendee has made the need for a fast and smooth internet an absolute must among today’s meeting planners,” said Gino Marasco, Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Hotel director of sales and marketing. “With this new technology any planner can be comfortable knowing that the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin can comfortably meet their group’s digital needs.”

SeaWorld’s Wild Days Are a Wild Good Time!

SeaWorld Wild Days
SeaWorld Wild Days

SeaWorld Wild Days

SeaWorld Orlando kicked off the new year with Wild Days, presented by Coca-Cola, the popular annual event that connects guests in even more ways with animals and the natural, wild world. The event is included with park admission and takes place three weekends in January (Jan. 16-17, Jan. 23-24 and Jan. 30-31). Each weekend is hosted by different animal experts, and features new educational shows – from orcas to wildlife rescue – and even more up-close animal experiences, meet-and-greet opportunities and interactive education stations.

I was lucky enough to attend one of the dates for the first weekend on Saturday and can tell you this is an amazing can’t miss experience! I was able to attend one of the legendary Jack Hanna’s shows and his ability to capture an audience with his love of animals and of Seaworld is so amazing to watch and there is so much anyone can learn from him. There’s also so many fun activities for everyone to experience like an interactive search and learn mission that ends with a special prize and tour and even stations where you can meet incredible animals.

The animal rescue staff is so knowledgeable and able to answer any questions about the animals and it’s so much fun to learn from them. I also really enjoyed the educational show we got to attend as it was so different than anything I’ve seen Seaworld do before and you can only catch the show during Wild Days so be sure to check it out!

January 23-24: “Penguin Lovers’ Weekend
Nationally recognized SeaWorld Animal Ambassador Julie Scardina hosts a cool weekend of wildlife surprises with a special focus on penguins. Guests can get up-close to these amazing feathered friends and hear from Julie about her lifelong love of animals and the parks’ commitment to wildlife conservation.
January 30-31: “Sea Rescue” Weekend
SeaWorld has rescued more than 27,000 animals over 50 years, and these amazing animal stories are featured weekly on the popular Saturday-morning ABC TV series “Sea Rescue.” Hear first-hand accounts of marine animal rescues, rehabilitations and returns by SeaWorld’s Animal Rescue Team, heroes and partners featured on the show.
Every Wild Days Weekend Includes:
New “Ocean Discovery” killer whale presentation – Guests can learn more about killer whales, also called orcas, and other species of whales during a special educational show. This interactive, 30-minute presentation teaches guests about the animals’ adaptations, habitats and behavior. (Note: This special presentation is in addition to the popular “One Ocean” shows scheduled throughout the day.)

Explore Zones – More than 14 fun and interactive education stations can be discovered throughout the park, featuring games and hands-on experiences that teach guests about animals and what they can do to protect the wild world in their own lives. Check event guide for exclusive in-park experiences.

New “Inspiring Stories” pre-shows – The SeaWorld Animal Training Team has some of the most fascinating jobs in the world. Guests can learn what it takes to care for animals that call SeaWorld home and how caring for them has helped with the rescue and rehabilitation of wild animals that need help. “Inspiring Stories” will take place at the beginning of three of the park’s popular shows: Blue Horizons, Pets Ahoy and Clyde & Seamore’s Sea Lion High. Check park maps for times.

Meet the Animals – Throughout the park, even more trainers, educators and animal care staff are stationed to share information and stories about the animals in our care and provide up-close meet and greets, scheduled feedings and fun surprises. Check park maps for times and locations.

The best way to experience this year’s Wild Days is with an Annual Pass. For a limited time, park guests can receive a refillable souvenir cup with the purchase of a SeaWorld Annual Pass. Yesterday I talked about one of my favorite winter accessories, the scarf! Another great accessory for winter I love is a cozy hat! These too cute hats from Etsy Designer WolfFawn are not only fun, but made from a soft polyfleece to keep you warm too!

These hats are also stretchy to keep the Disney Magic on your noggin. I can’t think of a better way to keep warm with Disney style when it’s too cold to wear my favorite Minnie ear headbands! There’s even a deep purple Haunted Mansion hat, yes, Haunted Mansion! Check out more of her awesome styles below:

5 Ways to Celebrate Your Birthday With Disney

celebrating

celebrating

Disney World, Disneyland and Disney Cruises are great places to celebrate just about any occasion. Birthdays may be the very best occasion to celebrate, though! A few years ago we celebrated my husband’s birthday at Disney World, in June we spent my son’s first birthday at Disneyland, and in February we will be spending my husband’s birthday aboard the Disney Magic.

Let’s talk about some amazing things that you can do to celebrate a birthday with Disney!

  • Buttons – You can pick up a free button from Guest Relations in any of the theme parks. It’s amazing how many people will say, “Happy Birthday” to your throughout your visit if you have a button.
  • Note the Birthday on Dining Reservations – If you make note that someone is celebrating a birthday on that day when you make your dining reservations the birthday boy or girl may be brought a card and a cupcake! I made the mistake of mentioning that we’re celebrating my husband’s birthday on our upcoming cruise while on the phone with a DCL cast member and was told to expect something in the dining room.
  • Order a Cake – There are a variety of cakes available at Disney World, Disneyland, and on Disney Cruise Line ships. Most cakes must be ordered in advance, however there are small cakes at Disney World that can be order and most table service restaurants when you arrive. Cakes all cakes are available about select Disney World and Disneyland table service restaurants. If you’re cruising cakes can be brought to the dining room or your stateroom. There is also the option for those dining at the Grand Floridian, the Contemporary, or Cinderella’s Royal Table in Magic Kingdom to order a Chocolate Glass Slipper dessert in advance to celebrate in an extra special way.
  • In-room Celebrations – These are also available at Disney World and Disneyland hotels as well as aboard Disney Cruise Line. There are a variety of options – some are specific to birthdays, but there are also themed packages for Frozen, Princesses, and Pirates. You can opt for an extra special gift basket or for something even more special your room can be decked out for the celebration. What a special way to celebrate!
  • Do Something Special – Plan the whole day around the birthday boy or girl! Do the things that that person especially will enjoy. If you are in parks go on all of their favorite rides and see all of their favorite characters. Book a special fireworks cruise or dessert party. Make a reservation for their favorite restaurant, or to make it even more special eat at a signature restaurants or some where they have always wanted to eat. An afternoon tea party is also available for booking at the Grand Floridian at Disney World. For those on a Disney Cruise and that are over the age of 18 why not book a spa experience!

There are so many amazing ways to celebrate your birthday with Disney!

Have you celebrated a birthday at a Disney Park or on a Disney Cruise? Tell us about your experience in the comments!

Top 10 Best Table Service Restaurants at the Disneyland Resort

DLR TS 1
DLR TS 1

DLR TS

Dining at the Disneyland Resort is just as important as the attractions and entertainment! I don’t always like to take the time to have a nice sit down meal, but when I do there are certain restaurants I like to eat at.

Here’s my top 10 table service restaurants at the Disneyland Resort:

10. Tortilla Jo’s

Located in the Downtown Disney District, this Mexican restaurant offers authentic south-of-the-border specialties in a vibrant setting. This casual dining spot has familiar favorites like tacos, burritos and fajitas as well as citrus-braised pork carnitas, marinated hanger steak ranchera, and chili-rubbed chicken a la plancha for the more adventurous. Two of my favorite things about this restaurant: fresh guacamole made tableside and the fresh handmade tortillas.

9. Steakhouse 55

Enjoy a tender, juicy steak at this restaurant located in the Disneyland Hotel. If steak isn’t your thing, don’t worry, they have other exceptional entrees like coldwater lobster tail, pan-roasted double chicken breast and fava bean & rye crusted king salmon. Choose from a great selection of sides that include the “loaded” baked potato, sautéed French green beans and truffled macaroni & cheese. Do yourself a favor and order the signature 24-layer chocolate cake for dessert!

8. Storytellers Café

Enjoy a unique character breakfast or a bountiful lunch/dinner at this restaurant located at Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa. The breakfast buffet includes home-style breakfast specialties like made-to-order omelets, Mickey waffles, and fresh baked goods. Lunch and dinner offerings include signature charred Nebraska corn chowder, “sticky” spare ribs with Napa Cabbage Slaw, and “robusto” flatbread with chorizo de Bilbao and romesco. A cozy fireplace makes this casual eatery feel warm and welcoming.

7. Ariel’s Grotto

The best character dining for the princess-lover is at Ariel’s Grotto in Disney California Adventure. The Disney Princess parade happens during breakfast and lunch. Breakfast offerings include fresh berry Belgian waffles, an egg-avocado-bacon breakfast croissant or a delicious egg white frittata. At lunch you will find fire-roasted corn cakes, pan-roasted chicken breast, and sautéed shrimp and angel hair pasta. Dinner features the fresh catch of the day, grilled lobster tail with honey-whiskey barbecue tri-tip and more.

6. Blue Bayou Restaurant

This classic restaurant is known best for it’s unique atmosphere. It’s located inside the Pirate’s of the Caribbean attraction at Disneyland! Watch guests float by as you enjoy your pan-seared citrus-marinated chicken breast or Royal Street seafood jambalaya. The Monte Cristo sandwich is also a favorite here. Be sure to save room for the mouthwatering crème brulée.

5. Goofy’s Kitchen

Another location for character dining is Goofy’s Kitchen, located at the Disneyland Hotel. The breakfast and dinner buffets feature 5 food stations. In the morning you can choose from  Mickey Mouse waffles and pancakes, French toast, sausage, bacon, and eggs Benedict just to name a few. At dinner pile your plate high with succulent meats from the carving station, the fresh catch of the day, seasonal vegetables, chilled tossed salads and more!

4. Carthay Circle Restaurant

This signature restaurant is known for the house biscuits: fried and stuffed with white cheddar, bacon and jalapeño and served with apricot honey butter. My mouth is watering already! Lunch-only options include the Carthay 8-oz Angus Burger, Trofie pasta with smoked chicken, and Moroccan lamb meatballs. At dinner try the sesame soy-glazed Skuna Bay salmon with black rice stir-fry or savory grilled Angus New York steak.

3. Napa Rose

Napa Rose is an elegant restaurant located in the beautiful Grand Californian Hotel & Spa. Open for dinner only, the Napa Rose offers upscale farm-to-table fare. Some of the entrées include: grilled fish of the day with seafood cassoulet, breast of duck with coastal mushrooms and black mission figs, and a pan-roasted Angus beef filet mignon served alongside fennel puree and Sonoma mushrooms. Be sure to have their expert sommeliers recommend the perfect wine pairing to compliment your meal.

2. Café Orleans

This New Orleans Square eatery offers savory soups, sandwiches, salads, and crepes. The favorite Monte Cristo sandwich is also served here. It’s a battered turkey, ham and Swiss treat dusted with powdered sugar and served with berry purée and is truly a slice of heaven. Other choices include hearty New Orleans gumbo, the “Crescent City” salad with blackened chicken or salmon and the seasonal crêpe. Don’t forget to try the delicious Mickey beignets served with fruit coulis and vanilla bean crème anglaise. Yum!

1. Carnation Café

My number 1 restaurant is located on Main Street U.S.A. in Disneyland and serves some of Walt’s favorite dishes. Stop in for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Be sure to try Chef Oscar’s choice for breakfast: the all-American breakfast of 2 eggs any style, potatoes, toast and your choice of hickory-smoked bacon or chicken-apple sausage links. For lunch or dinner, honor Walt’s memory by having the homemade meatloaf and chicken-fried chicken. My favorite is the legendary loaded baked potato soup-to die for!

Note: All of these restaurants accept reservations. Be sure to make reservations in advance because a lot of these places fill up fast. You can make advanced dining reservations up to 60 days out.

What’s your favorite table service restaurant at the Disneyland Resort? Did I miss any?

UPDATE: Real ID and How It Affects You!

domestic travel

Hi Friends!  If you recall, earlier this month I reported that big changes were on their way for domestic air travel in the very near future. This has created such a stir (and panic!) that the Department of Homeland Security has released additional information regarding the upcoming changes.

The easiest way to figure out what is going to happen is depicted in this easy to read graphic below:

travel

The bottom line is as of January 2016, everyone can still use their driver’s licenses to fly.  Starting in 2018, certain states (unless changes are made!) will be required to provide alternative identification, like a passport.  So right now, there’s no need to panic!

Some helpful facts to help debunk any rumors out there, direct from Homeland Security:

  • Until January 2018, if traveling by air domestically, residents from ANY state are still able to use a driver’s license, or any of the various other forms of identification accepted by the Transportation Security Administration (Passport or Passport Card, Global Entry cards, U.S. military IDs, airline or airport-issued IDs, federally recognized, and tribal-issued photo IDs.)
  • TSA will continue to accept driver’s licenses issued by all states through January 2018 and, then, will continue to accept licenses from all compliant states or noncompliant states with an extension.
  • You have until October 2020 to replace your current license with a REAL ID compliant license, as long as your state is compliant or is noncompliant with an extension.
  • REAL ID does not build a national database nor does it grant the Federal Government or another state access to a state’s driver’s license data.  REAL ID is not a national identification card. States and territories will continue to issue its own unique license, maintain its own records, and determine who may access those records and under what circumstances.

To stay most up to date, you can visit the DHS’s Real ID webpage.  And, now that we have that settled, let’s start planning your next vacation!  Email me at [email protected] so I can help you create the most magical adventure for you!

Space Mountain Themed Products Taking Off at Walt Disney World Resort

Space Mountain 1
Space Mountain 1

Space Mountain 1

Forty-one years ago this month, Space Mountain opened at the Walt Disney World Resort. Fulfilling the dream of traveling to outer space, this attraction has been a beloved classic since the beginning. In celebration of it’s anniversary Disney unveiled new Space Mountain themed merchandise at the Tomorrowland Power & Light Co gift shop.

Space Mountain 2

A whole assortment of t-shirts and hats are available from vintage styled icons, to modern designs. I loved the monochromatic blue hat with outlines of Mickey and friends floating around outer space! The red Space Mountain shirt seen above has a retro feel to it that gives me fond memories of the first time I walked up to the mysterious Space Mountain as a young Disney Addict in training.

Space Mountain 3

Many great souvenirs are also available, including picture frames, poster art and most intriguingly a doll from the new new “Attractionistas” based on favorite Disney Resort rides.

Space Mountain 4

Last we have a stylish men’s Tee from Disney Design Group artist Richard Terpstra. He created the artwork for this retro-looking, ringer tee based on Space Mountain promotional artwork from the 1970s. This shirt will be available January 25!

What do you think of these new Space Mountain items, are they blastastic? Which attraction would you like to see new merchandise based on?
