The Disney Theatrical Production has found a new home for the Broadway musical “Aladdin.”  The popular show currently on stage in New York will be heading to Chicago for a minimum 12 week run, starting in April 2017.  The story of the street rat who finds a magical lamp and is granted three wishes will be on stage at the Cadillac Palace Theatre, 151 W. Randolph St.

The Broadway musical based on the 1992 film opened in March 2014 and is now one of the highest grossing plays in New York.   The Chicago version is based on a story by Chad Beguelin and is very similar to the Disney film.  The production which will be cast, rehearsed and start off in Chicago will include film favorites such as “Friend Like Me,” ”Prince Ali” and “A Whole New World“.

Although Chicago is the first city in North America outside of New York to enjoy the show, London and Australia are getting ready for this year while Toyko and Hamburg productions are already open.

Popular Disney productions which got their start in Chicago include The Lion King, Mary Poppins and High School Musical, adding Aladdin was a popular decision for fans who were in their early teens when the film was released and are now in the mid to late 30s.

While single tickets are not available yet, you can book groups at www.broardwayinchicago.com.

Walt Disney Imagineering has created a story around Disney Springs that immerses guests into the rich heritage and natural beauty of Florida through unique architecture, color schemes, horticulture and more. Located in Town Center and at the heart of Disney Springs is a bubbling spring that represents not only the power and beauty of nature, but optimism and possibilities. According to the Imagineer’s story, more than a century ago, this spring attracted the first settlers and over time, the town of “Disney Springsgrew around the spring, eventually creating three additional neighborhoods: The Landing, The Marketplace and West Side – each with its distinct charm.

Check out this behind-the-scenes look at how Imagineers are putting the “springs” into Disney Springs!

Disney being sued in wrongful death over a snake bite

On Thursday a well-known Orlando attorney announced he will represent a family which is filing a formal suit against Disney. The suit claims an 8-year-old child was bitten by a snake in Disney’s Animal Kingdom in October of 2014 which cause his grandmother to have a heart attack and later died. The family will be suing for the boys injuries and the wrongful death of the grandmother.

The attorney, Matt Morgan says the family was in the park when a snake escaped its enclosure and was in the general public area where it fell out of a tree and bit the child.  The grandmother was a witness to the bit, went into cardiac arrest and died later.

Disney does not deny the child was bit, however they say it was a non-venomous snake which was wild, not one from the park.  Disney went on to say the child was treated with a band-aid by the park nurse and the family continued their day of fun at Animal Kingdom.

The Disney representative did not speak directly about the woman’s death but they did say; “These allegations are an utter mischaracterization of the facts.”

The upcoming action film, The Finest Hours,  from The Walt Disney Studios brings us a look at one of the most daring mission rescues in the history of the Coast Guard. The Finest Hours stars Chris Pine, Casey Affleck, Ben Foster, Holliday Grainger, John Ortiz and Eric Bana.  Directed by Craig Gillespie, The Finest Hours will have you going back and forth between cheering and holding your breath to see what the next scene will bring.

The Finest Hours comes to theaters, Friday, January 29, 2016.  Here is are a few clips to get you ready for some of the amazing story.  Do not miss this film and follow me on www.chipandco.com for the full movie review and cast interviews.

Meeting the cast of Disney movies at the press events is always an enjoyable day. The Finest Hours press day included the opportunity to meet and participate in roundtable sessions with Chris Pine (Bernie Webber), Ben Foster (Richard Livesey), Casey Affleck (Ray Sybert), Holiday Grainger (Miriam) and Director Craig Gillespie.

The first to enter our room was Chris Pine and Ben Foster.  After welcoming introductions, the pair started right in taking about the difficulties of portraying characters based on a true story.  Chris shared that the role of Bernie was unlike anyone he had every played before.  In response to what made the role appealing, Pine responded it was about the kindness of the character.  Bernie Webber is “not the sharpest or swiftest guy”  but although he is scared he knows his boat and he loves his fiance.  With Bernie Webber “what you see is what you get.”

In discussing the evolution of the relationship between Bernie and Richard Livesey, Ben Foster responded with one of my favorite moments of the interviews – talking about the honor it was to be able to spend time with the men and women of the military who chose to serve.  Foster added how Webber and his crew decided, “I’m gonna go on the boat even though everybody else is saying no.”  In terms of  Bernie Webber’s journey it was  privilege for Ben Foster to spend time with the real Chatham Coast Guard crew but also to see and work alongside Chris Pine in the role of the underdog.

Asked if they understood the idea of people putting themselves after others and if they could be able to fill the characters’ shoes in real life, Foster replied that one would hope that we are all capable of doing the right thing.  Chris Pine talked about the fact that we all have that good gene inside to do the right thing.  He continued saying he hoped he would have the fortitude and courage like the characters did if he was placed in a situation that required it.

The Finest Hours brings the true story of one of the Coast Guards most heroic rescues in their history.  Following the huge storm that struck the New England and surrounding areas, the storm causes two 500 foot tankers to split.  On the SS Pendleton, 1st Officer and Chief Engineer Raymond Seybert (Casey Affleck) takes charge and does whatever it takes to keep the part of the ship they are on, floating until rescuers show up.  Coast Guard team consisting of Bernie Webber (Chris Pine) and his crew are sent out on an impossible mission in a wooden lifeboat.  Fighting hurricane winds, 60 ft waves and freezing temperatures, Webber and his men manage to find and rescue the stranded crew.  But will they make it back safely?

Don’t miss The Finest Hours in theaters starting January 29, 2016. Read our official review here

The Finest Hours Brings True Heroism To The Screen

unnamed 1
unnamed 1

The finest hours poster

The Finest Hours brings movie viewers the true story of one of the most dangerous and heroic Coast Guard rescues on record.  Based on the February 18, 1952 rescue of 33 men trapped on a T-2 tanker, a crew from the Chatham, Massachusetts Coast Guard Station sets off on a mission that has the potential for disaster with every drop of rain and flake of snow that falls that fateful day.

The massive nor’easter storm that strikes New England and the neighboring towns brings chaos to the ships in the Atlantic waters off the coast.  Two T-2 tankers experience the same deadly situation when they are ripped in half due to faulty manufacturing.  The SS Fort Mercer sends out a distress signal which has the Chatham Station sending a crew out with the necessary equipment for a rescue mission.  When news of the SS Pendleton’s distress reach Warrant Office Daniel Cluff (Eric Bana), he send out a small crew of men on what can only be called a suicide mission to find the remains of the SS Pendleton.   Against impossible odds, a 4 man crew led by Capt. Bernie Webber (Chris Pine) set out in a wooden lifeboat that holds 12 in freezing temperatures.  Losing their navigational equipment and fighting hurricane force winds and 60 plus foot waves, the crew finds the 33 survivors aboard the grounded T-2 and manage to rescue 32 of them in one of the best adventure-thriller scenes this Entertainment Report has ever seen.

The film is actually divided into 3 sub plots.  Starting out with the relationship between Bernie Webber and his fiance, Miriam (Holliday Grainger), we are shown the personality and charm of Webber.  A captain in the Coast Guard, Bernie has always been a rule follower and never questioned authority.   Orders are to be followed even if it means he may not return from the mission.  Fiance, Miriam is a fiesty, modern gal that appears a bit forward and opinionated that is uncharacteristic for the times, making her appear a bit over the top.

The suspense and tension felt by the audience in the theaters as each scene unfolds is genuine.  Each misstep leads to the probability that even if Capt. Webber and his crew reach the SS Pendleton, how will they rescue and transport 33 men and themselves aboard a 12 man lifeboat in one of history’s worst storms?

The film, like the storm builds and quickly drifts into the remaining 2 subplots alternating between the scenes on the lifeboat with Webber and his crew and the scenes on the T-2, where 33 surviving crew members are understandably scared and unsure as to what to do to survive.  Quiet Senior Officer, first assistant engineer Ray Seybert (Casey Affleck) steps up at the advice of a fellow crew member and manages to not only inspire the crew but also comes up with a way to steer the remaining section of the tanker, grounding it with the hopes that it will stay afloat until help arrives.   Not without its share of drama on board the tanker, Seybert and the remaining survivors manage the impossible task of staying alive, while Webber and his crew miraculously find the tanker and through incredible courage, strength and team work manage to get the most of the crew on board his little lifeboat.

The Finest Hours shows once again the true heroes that exist in our world.  From the courageous crew on board the T-2 Pendleton to the Coast Guard teams and even the towns people who help out in their own small ways with support, food and prayers on the docks, this film will warm the hearts of viewers and continue to show the incredible heroic stories that are sadly not always recognized.

Unsung heroes that The Walt Disney Pictures brings to light.  Like McFarland USA where Coach White takes a group of young kids and turns them into champions and Million Dollar Arm where young men from India are given a chance to play in the major leagues,  Walt Disney Pictures takes true stories and brings them to the screen for all the world to learn and recognize the many regular folks whose stories inspire and give us hope.

Director by Craig Gillespie and producers by Jim Whitaker and Dorothy Aufiero,  bring this incredible true story in 3D at a theater near you, starting this Friday, January 29, 2016.
