Disney has announced more closures along the Boardwalk area next month.  The planned closure and renovation of the beloved Flying Fish Café  is set to start on February 1st, and Seashore Sweets, the ESPN Retail store and the Yard Arcade will now be closing along with it.

You have only a few days left to grab some of the delicious treats sold at Seashore Sweets before it closes on Feb. 1st! They sell candy, ice cream, cookies and more, all amidst a backdrop of Miss America memorabilia.

The Flying Fish Café is set to reopen in November of 2016 and perhaps, the space will be expanded into these spaces! There is no official word on whether or not Seashore Sweets will reopen in the fall, but every Boardwalk needs a candy shop! Hopefully we will have a great space for treats along the Boardwalk soon!

French police just arrested a 28 year old man for attempting to bring in 2 guns into Disneyland Paris earlier today. He was caught trying to walk in the New York Hotel entrance with 2 guns, a box of ammunition and a copy of the Koran. Metal detectors caught the suspect and he was quickly detained.

Very little information is being released about the suspect and he states he needed the guns for protection.

The man’s girlfriend was also arrested and she was unarmed according to media reports.

No official word has been released from Disneyland Paris and the park remains opens to guest. France has been on heightened alert since the attack last November.

This is remotely similar to the person trying to sneak a gun into the Magic Kingdom just a few months ago which caused an increase of security at the parks.

I am very excited to announce that internationally celebrated, iconic American brand Ethan Allen announces a new collaboration with Disney Consumer Products that will fuse Disney magic and Ethan Allen quality—for an experience that’s whimsical, sophisticated, fun, and entirely unique.

Ethan Allen’s in-house design team is busy developing a groundbreaking line of Disney-inspired furniture and home décor that’s designed to appeal to the entire family.

“We are delighted to work with Disney—this initiative has been a great team effort from day one,” says Ethan Allen Chairman, President and CEO Farooq Kathwari. “We can’t give away too much right now, but expect to see clever nods to Disney icons in exclusive fabrics, furniture, and home accents—and plenty of surprises, too.”

Combining Ethan Allen’s core strengths of quality, craftsmanship, and style with Disney’s rich storytelling, Ethan Allen is planning a customer experience that blends technology, tradition, and imagination in a way that’s made for today’s digitally savvy parents and kids.

The new collection will be introduced throughout the United States and Canada this year, and it will be supported by a strong, immersive digital presence.

“With the new line of Disney-inspired Ethan Allen products, families can bring Disney’s beloved characters and stories to life in unique ways throughout their homes,” said Leslie Ferraro, co-chair, Disney Consumer Products and Interactive Media, and president, Disney Consumer Products. “This collaboration is all about inspiring innovative design that combines Disney magic with Ethan Allen quality and attention to detail.”

I cannot wait to see what this new furniture and home decor look like! I’m sure I’ll be first in line! How do you feel about this idea?

Garden Grove is one of the best Character Breakfasts at Walt Disney World

2016 01 17 10.46.37
2016 01 17 10.46.37

GG

While visiting Walt Disney World last week we dropped by the Swan & Dolphin Resort to have breakfast at the Garden Grove. The Garden Grove is one of my secret spots smack dab in the middle of all the theme parks. It’s a quick boat ride from either Epcot or Hollywood Studios. It is a great place to eat breakfast with many fresh and unique choices, fun characters, and home of my favorite the yogurt bar.

Here is a little info about the Garden Grove if you have no idea what or where it is:

Guests will feel as if they have been transported to the tranquil gardens of Central Park after stepping into the Garden Grove restaurant in the Walt Disney World Swan Resort. The centerpiece of this unique restaurant is a beautiful 25-foot oak tree, adorned with twinkling lights and paper lanterns, a true spectacle for diners. During the day, families can feast in the park-like atmosphere while bright sunlight from the restaurant’s tall windows illuminates the room.

In the evening, the lights are dimmed and the oak tree centerpiece shimmers while guests dine under street lamps in a magical oasis. Each night, we feature an unlimited buffet of fresh, gourmet vegetables, soups and salads, accompanied by a delectable selection of Prime Rib, Half Roasted Chicken, or Cedar Plank Salmon and chef’s created sides and a special Seafood Buffet on Friday and Saturday. Don’t forget to leave room for a selection of decadent desserts, created by our award-winning pastry chef, Laurent Branlard.

The young at heart will also enjoy Disney character dining at dinner nightly and for breakfast on Saturdays and Sundays. Garden Grove is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner daily.

GG

What I love about Garden Grove is unlike the other Disney Buffets if you don’t want to eat all that food you can also order off a menu. They have some wonderful breakfast choices the Croque Monsieur is to die for and is also on the buffet! You can get a look at their menu here.

2016-01-17 10.14.03

Not only do they have great food they also have Disney Characters. Goofy, Pluto, Chip and Dale are on hand for photos and they make their way around to your table a few times during your breakfast! We got a bunch of fun family photos and even had time for selfies.

Fresh

Like I mentioned above one of my favorite items on the buffet is the SuperFoods Yogurt Bar and Smoothies. They are so good and so fresh! It is really a great way to start the day. You get tons of energy for the parks and you don’t feel so stuffed you can barely walk. This is one of the many unique items that set them apart from other Disney World Breakfast Buffets.

Ok now that I shared with you how yummy this breakfast buffet is, how close it is to Hollywood Studios and Epcot you are probably wondering how much something like this costs. Well unlike the other Disney Buffets that will cost you a pretty penny Garden Grove Character breakfast is only $24 for adults and $15 for children, if you go the ala carte option then your meal is even cheaper. Where else on Disney property could you meet the characters for the cost of a bowl of fresh fruit ($5).

Garden Grove also has other meals if you can’t make it out for breakfast, check them out:

Finally getting here might be a bit of a challenge if you are not staying at the Boardwalk or the Yacht & Beach Club. Since it is between Epcot & Hollywood Studios you have a few options. Find the park that has early magic hours and take the bus to that park and then take the boat to the Swan & Dolphin. It’s not a bad walk either. Breakfast is open till 11:30 am so you could go to Epcot spend a few hours and when they open the World Showcase then walk to the Swan & Dolphin for breakfast. But there is a 2nd option and the one we like to use…

We like to plan unique meals on Disney World property, I enjoy walking around the resorts and taking photos. Getting to the resorts can be a challenge sometimes especially if you have to wait on buses and monorails. What we do is use UBER from our hotel Saratoga Springs to the Swan Resort it cost us $7.87 for the 4 of us. We waited 10 minutes to for our ride to get to us and it took less than that to get to the hotel. I know the transportation at Disney is free but for us paying a few bucks for a Uber ride is worth it so we can head straight there for a meal. Then we just hop on a Disney bus and head to the parks when we are done. That is a bonus Disney World Quick Tip for ya!

No matter how you get to Garden Grove Character Breakfast you won’t be disappointed! It is a great meal and a good value. The food is fresh, the staff is friendly, and the characters are hilarious! I hope on your next Disney World Vacation you will give this place a try.

Sweet-and-Sour Fish on Steamed Buns (Makes 4)

  • Sweet-and-Sour Sauce
  • 1 cup water
  • ½ cup ketchup
  • ¼ cup Worcestershire sauce
  • ¼ cup sugar
  • ¼ cup vinegar
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons cornstarch

Fish

  • 8-ounce fillet white fish, such as cod, snapper or grouper
  • ½ teaspoon salt, plus additional for seasoning
  • Pinch ground white pepper
  • ¾ cup all-purpose flour
  • ¼ cup cornstarch
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 2/3 cup water
  • 2 tablespoon vegetable oil, plus additional for frying
  • 4 prepared bao buns (folded Chinese-style steamed buns–see Cook’s Note below)

Garnish

  • Thinly sliced onion, carrot, and lettuce
  • Pork Floss (see Cook’s Note below)

For sweet-and-sour sauce:

  1. Combine water, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, sugar, vinegar, and salt in a small saucepan over medium-high heat. Bring to a simmer.
  2. Combine cornstarch with 2 tablespoons water, stirring until dissolved. Stir cornstarch mixture into sauce, stirring constantly. Simmer, stirring constantly, until sauce thickens, 1 to 2 minutes. Set aside.

For fish:

  1. Pat fish dry and cut into four equal-size pieces.
  2. Season fish with salt and white pepper. Set aside.
  3. Whisk together flour, cornstarch, and baking powder in a medium bowl. Whisk together water and 2 tablespoons vegetable oil. Add water mixture to flour mixture, whisking just until no lumps remain.
  4. Pour vegetable oil into a deep pan to a depth of at least two inches. Heat oil to 350°F.
  5. Dip seasoned fish into prepared batter. Shake off excess. Drop gently into oil. Fry 2 to 3 minutes, until golden brown.
  6. Transfer cooked fish to a plate lined with paper towels. Sprinkle with salt.
  7. Reheat steamed buns by placing in a steamer basket over simmering water 4 to 5 minutes.
  8. On a plate, assemble bun by inserting a slice of fried fish between a bun, ladle sweet and sour sauce over fried fish, and place garnish over sauce. Sprinkle with pork floss (optional). Serve immediately.

Cook’s note: Bao buns are available in the refrigerated or freezer section of Asian markets. Pork floss is a sweet and salty dried, shredded pork product available in most Asian markets.

Episode VII Fans Celebrate Rey Day 2016 at Disneyland Park

image1
image1

I love that die-hard Disney fans are always eager to attend special events at Disney parks, and what I love even more is how in recent years the Disney parks fandom has grown so much that there are now numerous fan-created unofficial special events at Disney parks throughout the world. All incredibly creative and fun! Whether they are special events that have now been years in the running such as Dapper Day, Tiki Day, or Bats day, just to name a few, or ones that are just beginning for the first time in 2016.

image1
The Rey Day 2016 logo, designed by Austin Doyle. Merchandise featuring the design available at Redbubble.com/people/curiousercloth

The most recent unofficial fan day, held at Disneyland on January 24th was Rey Day 2016, spearheaded by popular Disney fan figures Lady Damfino (@ladydamfino on Instagram), Moxie Mills (@curiouser_creations on Instagram), and Loni Clark (@Lonicatherinec on Instagram). These passionate ladies wanted to create a day to pay fan tribute and creatively honor the new strong, female lead for a new generation of Star Wars fans. On the Rey Day 2016 Facebook event page they urged fans to participate in honoring Rey either by attending the meet-up at Disneyland, or by posting pictures on Facebook or Instagram using the hashtag #Reyday2016 even if they couldn’t make it to the event. Fans were encouraged to partake in the day in any creative way they chose, whether it was to Disneybound as Rey (dress in streetwear that resembles Rey’s clothes, check out Disneybound.tumblr.com), cosplay as her, or share artwork. Fans were posting a wide range of things—Mickey ears that were handcrafted and inspired by Rey, pictures of Rey toy collections, fans sporting the three-bun Rey hairdo.

I was able to have the pleasure of attending with my husband and daughter, we wore shirts that my husband sketched the design for and then printed:

We saw people of all ages paying homage to Rey, and it was clear everyone at the meet-up in Tomorrowland were thrilled to get to pay tribute to and see each other’s creative take on Rey, as well as be amongst fellow Star Wars fans.

Rey4

All throughout the day people from across the country were using the #Reyday2016 tag and participating in person and virtually. Why were there hundreds of people eagerly jumping at the chance to be a part of Rey Day 2016? Before Rey there was Leia and Padme, also two very strong female roles in the Star Wars universe. Star Wars, since its beginning, has had an incredibly big female-fan base, even though Star Wars merchandise has been more traditionally marketed towards boys. What makes Rey so special to thousands of people is that she is not only another positive female role model from a Star Wars movie, but she is the main focus of Episode VII, the first female lead of a Star Wars film, and it seems that Star Wars’ female-fan base feels that they are now being heard and better represented in the new generation of these wonderful films.

For me and my husband, we are very excited that our daughter gets to grow up with these new Star Wars films that features a wonderful role model: someone who is a scavenger, a pilot, multi-lingual, strong-willed, can use the force, and who never gives up. We absolutely can’t wait to see what celebration and creativity the next Rey Day may bring (Who knows, maybe by then we will even see a Rey costume and hairdo option at Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique!)!

Check out the hashtag #Reyday2016 on Facebook and Instagram for more Rey Day pictures, and post your own Rey tribute using the tag and keep the fandom going!
