Disney Wonder picks up Cuban migrants on it’s way to the Cayman Islands

The Disney Wonder was on its way to the Cayman Islands when they spotted a rustic boat with 12 people inside. The vessel carrying the migrants, which could only be described as dangerous and unseaworthy was stopped by the Wonder and the passengers were transported to the Disney Cruise Ship.

The migrants were turned over to authorities in the Cayman Island, officials there say more than 120 Cuban migrants have landed there since January. Officials think the increase in Cuban migrants trying to enter the US may be due to warming of the relationship between Cuba and the US, they are afraid they will no longer be able to enter the country welcomed.

This is not the first time the Disney Wonder has picked up migrants, in 2013 the Wonder picked up 8 migrants stranded on a raft outside of Key West.

Cruise ship lines have an agreement with the U.S. Coast Guard to pick up migrants found at sea and carry them to the next port.

Early we reported the Disney Wonder won best entertainment and best service in the cruise critics awards.

8 Tips to Enhance Your Adult Disney Cruise Line Experience

dcl

adults

While the Disney Cruise Line caters to families, there are so many awesome things on board for grown-ups that you do not want to overlook an amazing adventure at sea with this award-winning cruise line.  Although characters roam around the ship and there is no on-board casino, the ships offer so much for adults, even if you don’t bring kids along.  Here are some tips to guarantee a relaxing time and nearly crowd-free sailing:

Tip #1- Take the Art of the Theme tour on your first day at sea

  • If this is your first time sailing on the Disney Cruise Line, or if you are a seasoned veteran and taking a relaxing approach to your upcoming vacation, the Art of the Theme tour is a great way to spend one of your sea days.  This tour, featuring an insight to the ship’s artwork, is also a great way to get a tour of the entire ship.  I would recommend doing this on your first sea day so you can know the lay of the land for the rest of your sailing.  On the tour, you will learn fascinating and useful tidbits- such as the story behind the “Mickey Yellow” lifeboats and the world maps embedded in the carpets that provide you with direction.

Tip #2- Splurge and book a Stateroom with a Verandah

  • There is nothing like sitting out on your private balcony watching the sea pass by, and having an outdoor space to retreat to makes you feel like you are in your own private sanctuary, away from the crowds.  Verandah rooms are very affordable, averaging about $150 to $200 more than inside stateroom for the entire trip on sailings to the Caribbean and Bahamas.  To price out your dream Disney Cruise Line sailing, email me at [email protected].

Tip #3- Buy your alcohol ahead of time

  • Disney Cruise Line is one of the few major cruise lines that allows Guests to carry on their own alcohol.  This must be packed in your carry-on luggage and will save you money along the way.  Each Guest may bring up to two bottles of unopened wine or champagne and six beers at the beginning of the trip.  One thing to note: there will be a $25 corkage fee in all the dining rooms.

Tip #4- Book Port Adventures the Second Day

  • If you do not book your Port Adventures in advance, then wait until the second day to book.  On the first day at sea, the line for booking can be very long.  Many excursions will still be available and you will find an almost empty line.  If you are worried about something selling out, chat with the crew onboard (like a bartender) to get their professional opinion.  They have been on the ships long enough to know the crowd patterns and Guest preferences.

Tip #5- Hit the Spa on Port Days

  • Senses Spa, a retreat just for adults, offers a number of different massage and facial options.  Many times, on port days, you can get an awesome discount (sometimes upwards of $40!) and take advantage of specials.  If you don’t want to miss out on the fun waiting for you at the port, book a treatment an hour or so before you have to be back on the boat.  It’s a great way to unwind after all your fun in the sun!

Tip #6- Do the Castaway Cay 5K

  • I know what you are thinking….running on vacation, um no thank you.  But hear me out!  Almost every Caribbean sailing stops at Disney’s Castaway Cay in the Bahamas, which is Disney’s private island paradise.  Finding space to relax on the beach can sometimes be a competitive challenge, so sign up for the Castaway Cay 5K.  This untimed loop run takes you around the small island and helps you get your bearings and come up with a game plan for the day.  The added bonus is that you will exit the ship the moment it docks.  Pack a beach bag and claim your lounger before jogging off all the food and wine you indulged in up to that day!  If you are an avid running and the 5K sounds awesome, never fear if it rains…the run will still take place around the ship’s track.

Tip #7- Splurge on an Adult dinner

  • Every Disney Cruise Line sailing will offer at least one adults-only, fine-dining restaurant option (for a fee).  Palo and Remy are well worth the extra cash and you will feel like you’ve been swept away to a big city restaurant.  The fresh pasta at Palo is amazing and Remy features an awesome wine display.  Make sure to book these reservations in advance, as prime dinner times fill up before you even step foot on the ship.

Tip #8- Wander around the ship at 5:30pm

  • 5:30-8:00pm is the Golden Hour on the Disney Cruise Line.  The first dinner seating, preferred by families with younger kiddos, starts at 6:45pm, which means the main deck starts clearing out around 5:30pm so the families can get ready for dinner.  This is a great time to check out the amazing waterslides, like the AquaDuck on the Disney Fantasy!  After you are done with the slides, head on over to one of the adult-only hot tubs to watch the sun set into the horizon.

These are just a few tips to make your adult-only getaway a little more enjoyable.  I have a bunch more to share and would love to help you plan your next romantic getaway or girls/guys cruise!  Email me at [email protected] to learn more about itineraries and pricing.  The Disney Cruise Line currently has their itineraries out through early 2017, so now is a great time to begin planning!

Rivers of Light

Some beautiful new concept art has been released for ‘Rivers of Light’, the nighttime show coming to Disney’s Animal Kingdom at the Walt Disney World Resort this spring.

12746135_10153443886447781_542984132_n

The show will take place on Discovery River between Discovery Island and Expedition Everest. In the show, a pair of mystical hosts come to the river bearing gifts of light. During ‘Rivers of Light’, the hosts set out from the shore on elaborate lantern vessels for a dramatic dance of water and light to summon animal spirits. Even the Tree of Life will undergo an “amazing awakening as the animal spirits of the tree are brought to ‘light’ by magical fireflies, revealing moments of wonder and enchantment.”

In this new concept art, you can see a number of floating sculptures floating around the center structure which stretches high up into the night sky. There are mist screens much like in Fantasmic!, water fountains, floating lanterns, and so much more.
This new concept art looks amazing and makes ‘Rivers of Light’ seem like it might need to be seen to be believed. Hopefully we’ll have an opening date soon!

Are you looking forward to this new nighttime show at Disney’s Animal Kingdom

Top 10 Things To See & Do at Disney World in the Spring

spring
spring

spring

As I sit her in cold New Jersey, contemplating how many hours I will spend shoveling 18-24 inches of snow, there are a few things I can think about to bring me some solace from this dreary weather: hot chocolate with whipped cream and marshmallows in front of a toasty fireplace, a Konk Kooler sipped beach-side in Castaway Cay, and my favorite of all, being in Disney World in the spring.  Don’t get me wrong, I love Disney around the holidays with its festive decorations, but there’s something about the blooming flowers and larger-than-life topiaries that really gets me into a cheery mood.  If you are one of the lucky ones who has a trip planned or if you are thinking about a future trip, here are our top 10 things to see and do at Disney World in the spring:

  1. Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival.  Hands down, this is one of my most favorite events at Epcot.  I love marveling at the amazing topiaries and flowers that decorate the entire park, and with the addition of special events, food kiosks serving yummy dishes, and live music, it’s an event not to be missed.  What’s even better is that this year’s festival runs from March 2 through May 30 – 15 days longer than last year’s festival, which only ran for 75 days.
  2. Rivers of Light.  You know those days when people only visited Animal Kingdom during the day?  It won’t be that way for much longer.  Starting this spring, Animal Kingdom will debut the Rivers of Light night show, which will showcase performers, floating lanterns, water screens, and vibrant lights.  The Tree of Life will be brought to, er, life in a whole new way and if you’ve seen Disney’s track record with fantastic nightly shows like Wishes, Illuminations, and Fantasmic, then you know Rivers of Light will be sure to give you all the feels too.
  3. Kilimanjaro Safaris After Sunset.  As you can see, there’s a theme here with Animal Kingdom introducing nighttime activities at the park.  The Kilimanjaro Safaris After Sunset is just what the name implies – our favorite safari will go out after sunset and take guests on a tour of the savanna.  Disney promises us the daytime safari we all know and love will feel like an entirely new experience at night.  Personally speaking, I’m really looking forward to seeing my favorites Shenzi, Banzai, and Ed as hyenas will be highlighted as part of this sunset tour.  Mufasa, Mufasa, Mufasa…That gets me laughing every time.
  4. Frozen Ever After.  I can’t even say how excited I am about the debut of Frozen Ever After.  Yes, I am a Maelstrom fan.  Yes, I am very sad that it’s gone and still go through withdrawals whenever I walk past the Norway Pavilion.  But somewhere between the first and hundredth time that my two little girls sang Let It Go, I became a fan myself.  I can’t wait to see how Disney Imagineers will put their creative genius to work and make us fall in love with Queen Elsa, Princess Anna, Olaf, Kristoff, and Sven all over again.  And we don’t have to wait much longer, because this ride debuts this spring!
  5. New restaurants and dining events.  From the newly opened Jungle Navigation Co. Ltd. Skipper Canteen serving up fantastic dishes with the same fun and flair as our favorite cruise, to the fancy eateries at Disney Springs like Morimoto Asia, there are plenty of new experiences for us Disney foodies.  Even classic and popular restaurants, like Narcoossee’s, California Grill, and Fulton’s Crab House, are keeping things fresh by offering new brunch experiences on Sundays.
  6. Star Wars Half Marathon – The Dark Side.  One of Disney’s most iconic villains, Darth Vader, reigns over this inaugural half marathon.  For 13.1 miles, participants can use The Force to propel them to the finish line.  There will be storm troopers cheering runners throughout the way, and there are also special events and entertainment during the half marathon weekend, from April 14-17.
  7. Atlanta Braves Spring Training.  For sports aficionados out there, ESPN’s Wide World of Sports Complex will play host to the Atlanta Braves’ spring training games.  Games are scheduled in March and April, and will feature teams like the Baltimore Orioles, New York Mets, Houston Astros, Detroit Tigers, Washington Nationals, Florida Marlins, St. Louis Cardinals, and New York Yankees.
  8. St. Patrick’s Day Events.  There are many opportunities to have a drink (or several) during St. Paddy’s Day at Disney. For one, Raglan Road throws quite a party at Disney Springs.  Last year, Raglan Road’s Mighty St. Patrick’s Festival showcased amazing eats and entertainment, and this year promises to be even better.  The Rose & Crown Pub at the UK Pavilion at Epcot is also a very popular stop.
  9. Dapper Day.  Have you ever been at the parks in the spring and noticed that many people were dressed very, well, dapper?  It must have been Dapper Day!  It’s not an official Disney event, but many guests will still get dressed to the nines in their vintage outfits, colorful hats and bows, pearls, and bow ties.  Mark your calendars and get ready to be dapper on April 16, 2016.
  10. Invictus Games. From May 8-12, the ESPN Wide World of Sports will host the Invictus Games, where our wounded servicemen and women from around the world compete in various sports, including archery, cycling, volleyball, swimming, track and field, and many others.  It’s a great time to cheer our heroes and be inspired on many levels.

As you can see, Disney is alive and vibrant and wonderful to visit in the spring!  With that, I turn it over to you: what is your favorite thing to see and do at Disney in the spring?  Sound off in the comments below!

Secrets of Going to Disneyland with a Young Child

Article1
Article1

Listicle for Young Kids

I am a fairly new mom, having a daughter who is only 12 months old, however, I am a longtime Disneyland passholder. From the moment I took my baby girl to Disney for the first time at two months old, I immediately was on the hunt for the best places to go for feedings, naps, and playtimes amid the bustling atmosphere of Disneyland. Being known as a Disney novice among my friends and family, I often got asked about the best places to go around the resort for all things baby and toddler, and want to extend my knowledge to all of you on what places I’ve discovered throughout Disneyland that have been lifesavers in going to the parks with the tiniest of tots!

There are many opportunities where parents need a quiet, comfortable place. If you have a little one who gets distracted while eating, or you want to nurse somewhere privately, or need to try to get your child to sleep, here are my go-to quiet places:

At Disneyland:

  • Baby Care Center (at the end of Main Street, U.S.A.)
  • Hungry Bear Restaurant eating terrace, if you go all the way towards the back of the terrace on either floor it is almost always empty, or at the very least few people, so this tends to be quiet plus has a lovely view of the Rivers of America! (Critter Country)
  • Waterfront seating area in Fantasyland. Just like Hungry Bear terrace, this is almost always empty, and even during peak seasons it is quiet. (This is a little peninsula of land with tables and chairs located between the Matterhorn and Small World in Fantasyland)

At California Adventure:

  • Baby Care Center (Between Carsland and Pacific Wharf)
  • Fiddler, Fifer, and Practical Cafe (aka Starbucks) tends to be pretty empty during non-peak times. During peak times however, it is busy and full of noise (Buena Vista Street).
  • Smokejumper’s Grill, if you go near the back of the outdoor eating area it is almost always quiet. Sometimes peak seasons in summer it can be full, but almost always the eating area to the right of the entrance is more sparse and quiet (Grizzly Peak Airfield).
  • The Mad T Party area, during the day that is! During the daytime when the dance party isn’t happening, all the Mad T Party lounge chairs are still set up to sit on, and some of them even have their backs turns towards the main pathways, creating ultimate privacy. This is just past the Monsters, Inc. ride (Hollywood Backlot).

The Rest of the Resort:

  • Any of the hotel lobbies make for a comfortable and quiet place to feed. Note: If going to feed at the Disneyland Hotel, I recommend going to the lobbies of the Adventureland or Frontierland towers, since Fantasyland Tower is where check-in is located, it can sometimes be quite busy.
  • During the daytime on off-peak seasons, Tangaroa Terrace makes for a quiet place to feed, plus relaxing Hawaiian music and beautiful atmosphere! There’s the seating area outside the Terrace itself, the seating area in front of Trader Sam’s, and a couch/fireplace seating area downstairs from the Trader Sam’s entrance. (Disneyland Hotel area)
  • Starbucks outdoor eating area, during mid or non-peak seasons (Downtown Disney, next to World of Disney).
  • Whitewater Snacks, you can come in here even if you aren’t purchasing food and is almost always empty (near the pool and Mandara Spa, Grand Californian Hotel).
  • La Brea Bakery quick service outdoor eating area. I’ve gone there many times even if I haven’t ordered anything. The quick service area is a common resting place for customers and non-customers since it’s right by the tram stop, and is very large and always empty! (Downtown Disney)

Next are my tips of places to go if you are bottle feeding and need a microwave.

  • Baby Care Center (Main Street U.S.A., Disneyland)
  • Baby Care Center (Main Street U.S.A., Disneyland)
  • The Coffee shop next to Goofy’s Kitchen (Disneyland Hotel)
  • Paradise Pier lobby, any cast member there can direct you to it, and is available 24/7 (Paradise Pier Hotel).

Playtime! My daughter isn’t walking yet, but wants to crawl non-stop! It can be tough when little ones want to crawl everywhere or toddlers want to run around at a busy theme park, so here is my list of places that are great, more confined spaces for littles to get their “ya-ya’s” out!

At Disneyland:

  • This one is a bit more obvious, but any of the houses or playgrounds in Toontown! Repeat visitors of Disneyland are most likely well aware of Toontown, but since it is located in the back of the park many first timers don’t know it’s there! It’s great for running around, very child friendly, screaming and running around encouraged!
  • Tarzan’s Treehouse–not safe for crawlers, but great for walkers! (Adventureland)
  • Star Wars Launch Bay and Super Hero HQ–This is a great indoor place for littles to explore, and my baby LOVES crawling in there! She’s fascinated by the spotlights, the music, and the Star Wars opening scrawl on the carpet as you walk into Launch Bay (Tomorrowland).

At California Adventure:

  • Animation Building, great for walkers and crawlers! It is in fact, my crawling baby’s favorite place to go in the parks! She loves all the beautiful images and music, and loves chasing the spotlights. (Hollywood Backlot)
  • Water play areas in a Bug’s Land is so much fun for kids! It’s complete with a splash pad (A Bug’s Land).
  • Wilderness Explorer Trail, this is another one great for walkers instead of crawlers. A beautiful walking trail with scavenger hunts and bridges and playgrounds (Grizzly Peak Airfield, between Grizzly River Rapids and The Little Mermaid Ride).

The Rest of the Resort:

  • Any of the hotel lobbies are excellent places to take crawlers, and they love the TV that plays Mickey cartoons! There’s one in all three of the resort hotel lobbies (All hotel lobbies, at the Disneyland Hotel it is located in the Fantasyland Tower).
  • Lego Store is great for walkers, they have Lego tables where kids are encouraged to build their own creations (Downtown Disney).

Lastly, not only is it important for our kids to have their needs met, but parents need to stop and take a meal break too! It’s convenient to be able to leave the little ones in their strollers while eating, but not all eating places have the room to conveniently order food with a stroller in line or sit in the eating area with a klunky stroller. Here are my recommendations for the best (aka the ROOMIEST) places to sit and relax for a meal with your stroller!

At Disneyland:

  • Any eating place in Toontown, typically there are always tables available and no narrow lines to try to squeeze a stroller through.
  • Galactic Grill is outside, yet covered so stays nice and cool. Their queue lines fit strollers and seating available as far as the eye can see, and plenty of stroller/wheelchair ramps (Tomorrowland).
  • Hungry Bear Restaurant has lots of spacious seating, and as mentioned earlier, great for peace and quiet! (Critter Country)
  • Refreshment Corner has an okay amount of seating, but the best part is there are no metal bars to separate the queue lines, making strollers fitting inside the restaurant a breeze! (Main Street U.S.A.)
  • TIP: The restaurants that I personally find are the TOUGHEST to squeeze a stroller through that I try to avoid unless I have parked my stroller elsewhere are Jolly Holiday, Village Haus, River Belle Terrace, and The French Market Restaurant.

At California Adventure:

Since California Adventure was built in 2001 with pathways purposefully wider than at Disneyland, most restaurants are easily stroller-friendly. So instead of saying which to go to, it’s a shorter list to let you know which ones might not be as stroller-friendly.

  • Carthay Circle Restaurant, it’s a fancy joint with mostly adults dining so I wouldn’t recommend bringing a stroller in. However, the Carthay Circle Lounge is roomy and allows strollers, and is a great place to grab a drink and a snack while the little ones nap!
  • Fidler, Fifer, Practical Cafe has a stroller-friendly eating area, but it is very hard turning the many sharp corners of the queue line with a stroller (I’ve tried).
  • Smokejumper’s Grill is another one with great seating area for strollers, but lacks a stroller-friendly queue line.

The Rest of the Resort:

  • Most everywhere easily fits strollers, with the exception of Napolini, and sometimes the Jazz Kitchen Express. Downtown Disney and the hotel restaurants are great options to eat with family of all ages when you want more of a sit-down table service meal without stressing about your little ones disturbing others. At the Disneyland Resort, family dining is expected!

That’s it for my listicle of the best places to know about when making a trip to the Disneyland Resort with babies and toddlers, I have found these places to all be great gems, and I hope it can help some other parents too! Enjoy your memories with your littles at the happiest place on earth! Beware of this Disneyland ticket scam!

Scam

If it looks too good to be true, it probably is! Especially if it’s an offer off Facebook especially if there is bunch of spelling errors!

There is a coupon being offered on Facebook for four free tickets to Disneyland in California, the ad is good until February 25th, according to the advertisement.

Besides the spelling errors there are other mistakes such as all the restaurants that the tickets mention are in Walt Disney World, Orlando.

Apparently the scammers were out to get personal information such as name, DOB, social security number and addresses. Disneyland has said they only received a few inquiries in reference to the tickets!

Make sure when purchasing tickets for any Disney vacation you either contact Disney directly, use Undercover Tourist or use an authorized Disney travel agent, we know all the scams and can help plan the most perfect vacation for your family!

When you are ready to book you can contact me, my name is Karen Asaro I’m a travel agent with World of Magic Travel and a writer for Chip and Co and Disney Addicts. I visit Disney World as often as possible to keep up to date with the latest going on throughout the world, if I’m not there I am planning my next trip! Another Disney Character is Leaving the Magic Kingdom

With Walt Disney World’s recent character updates throughout the parks, another fan favorite will no longer be found in the Magic Kingdom beginning February 22nd.  Who is this character?  No other than everyone’s favorite stepmother, Lady Tremaine!

But, don’t worry, you will still be able to meet Lady Tremaine during dinner at 1900 Park Fare over at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort and Spa.  She, along with Anastasia, Drizella, Prince Charming and Cinderella make for an incredible dining experience with an extensive buffet.  1900 Park Fare is one table service credit on the Disney Dining Plan and advanced reservations are highly recommended.

There has not been an announcement on whether or not new characters will be coming to the Magic Kingdom in the near future.  But as soon as we get word, we will share the news!

Thinking of heading to Walt Disney World this year but don’t know where to start with planning?  I’d love to help create a magical vacation for you and your family!  Email me at [email protected] to get started!

Disney Princesses Shine In New Photo Series

Toy Photographer, Brian McCarty has created iconic scenes from some of my favorite Disney Princesses films as part of the celebration of play and storytelling that Disney is known for.  Taking inspiration from three beautiful princesses RapunzelTiana and Merida, the team of set designers have brought McCarty’s scenes to life.  Using dolls, toys, custom sets and other props, the scenes are identical replicas found in the films.

Mr. McCarty talked about the importance of using the Disney princesses to inspire kids to consider new possibilities. Adding to the celebration is the launch of “Dream Big, Princess” during the month of February which will focus on celebrating the amazing qualities each princess possesses with the hope that kids will be encouraged to reach for this dreams and goals.

McCarty and the team of set designers shared preparations and items used for the photo sessions.

Merida’s Brave scene included Angus who was custom modeled with 3D sculpting and printing technology and flocked by hand to closely resemble real horse hair, by a team member who worked on the original Brave film.  The scenery was created and placed by hand to lend depth to the forest, and incorporates a mix of natural elements like sticks, Manzanita branches, moss, lichen and stone, along with prop magic. Here, Merida comes from Disney Store’s line of Disney Princess dolls.

Tiana‘s photo included details from the film and New Orleans style including a balcony and building frame that stood at six feet high and five feet wide.   Using laser cut wood railings floating doors and extensive wood detailing gave the set a proper scale.  Tiana is represented by the new Hasbro line of Princess Dolls that is available exclusively at Walmart this fall, just in time for the holidays.

Rapunzel’s set took over eight hours to set up and shoot and used 250 lights and 40 hand made lanterns made up of rice paper with sumi ink and hand wired with incandescent pinball machine light bulbs.   The addition of floral embellishments and lights add an incredible look and feel to this scene.

Ace, a training guide dog with the Guide Dogs of America, was in Disneyland as the last part of his social training when he met up with Pluto, the two became instant friends!

WATCH: A service dog in training got to meet his favorite character Pluto at Walt Disney World.

Posted by Fox News on Saturday, February 13, 2016

The excitement Ace is feeling is almost contagious, however handler Sandy Stienblums said via Facebook:

“This puppy is one I raised (as a volunteer) for Guide Dogs of America, He is training to be a guide dog for the blind. We went to Disneyland for a few hours as a socialization experience — what you didn’t see after the 14-15 seconds video where he settled in a down was his down/stay for a few minutes while Pluto tried to break his stay.”

Good to know this dog knows when to relax, when to play and when to be serious! Good luck Ace! You made my day!
