While the Disney Cruise Line caters to families, there are so many awesome things on board for grown-ups that you do not want to overlook an amazing adventure at sea with this award-winning cruise line.  Although characters roam around the ship and there is no on-board casino, the ships offer so much for adults, even if you don’t bring kids along.  Here are some tips to guarantee a relaxing time and nearly crowd-free sailing:

Tip #1- Take the Art of the Theme tour on your first day at sea

  • If this is your first time sailing on the Disney Cruise Line, or if you are a seasoned veteran and taking a relaxing approach to your upcoming vacation, the Art of the Theme tour is a great way to spend one of your sea days.  This tour, featuring an insight to the ship’s artwork, is also a great way to get a tour of the entire ship.  I would recommend doing this on your first sea day so you can know the lay of the land for the rest of your sailing.  On the tour, you will learn fascinating and useful tidbits- such as the story behind the “Mickey Yellow” lifeboats and the world maps embedded in the carpets that provide you with direction.

Tip #2- Splurge and book a Stateroom with a Verandah

  • There is nothing like sitting out on your private balcony watching the sea pass by, and having an outdoor space to retreat to makes you feel like you are in your own private sanctuary, away from the crowds.  Verandah rooms are very affordable, averaging about $150 to $200 more than inside stateroom for the entire trip on sailings to the Caribbean and Bahamas.  To price out your dream Disney Cruise Line sailing, email me at tricia@worldofmagictravel.com.

Tip #3- Buy your alcohol ahead of time

  • Disney Cruise Line is one of the few major cruise lines that allows Guests to carry on their own alcohol.  This must be packed in your carry-on luggage and will save you money along the way.  Each Guest may bring up to two bottles of unopened wine or champagne and six beers at the beginning of the trip.  One thing to note: there will be a $25 corkage fee in all the dining rooms.

Tip #4- Book Port Adventures the Second Day

  • If you do not book your Port Adventures in advance, then wait until the second day to book.  On the first day at sea, the line for booking can be very long.  Many excursions will still be available and you will find an almost empty line.  If you are worried about something selling out, chat with the crew onboard (like a bartender) to get their professional opinion.  They have been on the ships long enough to know the crowd patterns and Guest preferences.

Tip #5- Hit the Spa on Port Days

  • Senses Spa, a retreat just for adults, offers a number of different massage and facial options.  Many times, on port days, you can get an awesome discount (sometimes upwards of $40!) and take advantage of specials.  If you don’t want to miss out on the fun waiting for you at the port, book a treatment an hour or so before you have to be back on the boat.  It’s a great way to unwind after all your fun in the sun!

Tip #6- Do the Castaway Cay 5K

  • I know what you are thinking….running on vacation, um no thank you.  But hear me out!  Almost every Caribbean sailing stops at Disney’s Castaway Cay in the Bahamas, which is Disney’s private island paradise.  Finding space to relax on the beach can sometimes be a competitive challenge, so sign up for the Castaway Cay 5K.  This untimed loop run takes you around the small island and helps you get your bearings and come up with a game plan for the day.  The added bonus is that you will exit the ship the moment it docks.  Pack a beach bag and claim your lounger before jogging off all the food and wine you indulged in up to that day!  If you are an avid running and the 5K sounds awesome, never fear if it rains…the run will still take place around the ship’s track.

Tip #7- Splurge on an Adult dinner

  • Every Disney Cruise Line sailing will offer at least one adults-only, fine-dining restaurant option (for a fee).  Palo and Remy are well worth the extra cash and you will feel like you’ve been swept away to a big city restaurant.  The fresh pasta at Palo is amazing and Remy features an awesome wine display.  Make sure to book these reservations in advance, as prime dinner times fill up before you even step foot on the ship.

Tip #8- Wander around the ship at 5:30pm

  • 5:30-8:00pm is the Golden Hour on the Disney Cruise Line.  The first dinner seating, preferred by families with younger kiddos, starts at 6:45pm, which means the main deck starts clearing out around 5:30pm so the families can get ready for dinner.  This is a great time to check out the amazing waterslides, like the AquaDuck on the Disney Fantasy!  After you are done with the slides, head on over to one of the adult-only hot tubs to watch the sun set into the horizon.

These are just a few tips to make your adult-only getaway a little more enjoyable.  I have a bunch more to share and would love to help you plan your next romantic getaway or girls/guys cruise!  Email me at tricia@worldofmagictravel.com to learn more about itineraries and pricing.  The Disney Cruise Line currently has their itineraries out through early 2017, so now is a great time to begin planning!
