Disney’s Aulani Resort Celebrates the World Premiere of “Moana 2” with Stars and Filmmakers

Last week, the stunning shores of Ko Olina, Hawai’i, played host to the world premiere of Disney’s highly anticipated “Moana 2.” Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa was at the heart of the festivities, welcoming stars, filmmakers, and special guests.

One of the highlights of the event was a captivating Fire & Knife Demonstration by Hualālai Chung, the talented voice of Moni in the film. Chung, who is also a performer at Aulani, showcased his incredible skills, leaving guests amazed. This thrilling performance and other exciting shows can be experienced by all resort guests at Aulani’s KA WA‘A – A Lū‘au.

Maui’s fishhook and Moana’s oar were spotted along Aulani Resort Beach, everyone’s favorite demigod and wayfinder were surely close by and ready for the premiere of the film! You may have even noticed a few other Moana 2 stars that were also spotted enjoying Aulani Time!

The premiere itself was held at the beautiful Lanikūhonua Cultural Institute, a short journey from Aulani. Guests experienced special performances led by Tiana Nonosina Liufau, Kayla Faʻamaligi, and Polynesian creatives before the main event of the evening.

Several stars from the film were in attendance, including Auliʻi Cravalho (voice of Moana), Dwayne Johnson (voice of Maui), Hualālai Chung (voice of Moni), Khaleesi Lambert-Tsuda (voice of Simea) and Gerald Faitala Ramsey (voice of Tautai Vasa), along with filmmakers and songwriters, and of course Mickey and Minnie!

Five very special Make-A-Wish kids and their families were invited to be Dwayne Johnson’s personal guests at the premiere, Aulani had the honor of hosting them during their stay.

Disney Honors Sherman Brothers Legacy with “The Last Verse,” a Touching Tribute to “It’s a Small World”

Disney has premiered a poignant short film, “The Last Verse,” celebrating the legacy of the Sherman Brothers and their iconic song, “It’s a Small World.” The film features a newly revealed verse written by Richard Sherman before his passing in May 2024, serving as a final gift to the studio he cherished.

The short film debuted as part of ABC News Studios’ two-hour documentary event, “The Untold Story of Mary Poppins: A Special Edition of 20/20,” commemorating the 60th anniversary of “Mary Poppins,” for which the Sherman Brothers won Academy Awards for Best Original Song and Best Original Score.

Disney CEO Bob Iger expressed his admiration for the Sherman Brothers, stating, “As the legendary creators of some of the most cherished music of the past century, the Sherman brothers will be remembered for their profound impact on our global culture. Hearing Richard Sherman recite the final verse to ‘It’s a Small World’ before he died will be a moment I will carry with me forever.”

“The Last Verse” takes viewers on a journey through the 60-year history of “It’s a Small World,” showcasing its global impact and the enduring legacy of the Sherman Brothers. The film was directed by Henry Alex Rubin, known for his work on the award-winning documentary “Murderball.”

Richard Brim, Global Chief Creative Officer for adam&eveDDB, the creative partner on the project, shared his thoughts on capturing Disney’s influence and paying homage to the Sherman Brothers.

“The Last Verse” will be available for streaming on Disney+ starting November 28th, and can also be found on YouTube and social media platforms.

Disney World Brings Holiday Joy to Veteran Families

As part of Disney’s commitment to honoring military members and their families, Disney VoluntEARS continued their annual tradition of bringing holiday joy to Orlando Fisher House. These dedicated volunteers brought joy and magic to families in need during the festive season.

This tradition began in 2019 when the Disney SALUTE veteran employee resource group first delivered beautiful Walt Disney World decorations to Orlando Fisher House to bring some extra holiday joy to veterans and their families who are going through challenging times.

Orlando Fisher House stands as a beacon of hope for veteran families in need. It’s one of nearly 100 comfort homes nationwide built by Fisher House Foundation. These warm and welcoming spaces offer complimentary lodging, allowing families to stay close to their loved ones while they are receiving medical care at a nearby hospital.

For years, Disney has supported Fisher Houses across the nation through Disney VoluntEARS events like this and more.

Disney’s tradition was made even more special this year as they joined teams from both the Fisher House and Orlando VA Medical Center to officially open a new outdoor kitchen area.

Disney was honored to provide funding to help renovate this new social grill space that will be a place where families can come together while supporting their heroes who are receiving care. Following the ceremony, expert Disney Chefs helped officially open the newly renovated outdoor patio by serving up a delicious lunch.

“It is always a magical day when Disney comes to our Fisher House to spread some Holiday cheer for our guests,” said George Denby, General Manager of Orlando Fisher House. “We are grateful for their generous donation to renovate our outdoor kitchen; this will allow our families to spend more time together and enjoy delicious meals.”

In addition to what took place in Florida, Fisher Houses in Hawaii, Los Angeles and Long Beach will also receive some holiday décor and cheer.

Advancing the support to the military communities through Disney VoluntEARS events like this are just some of the ways Disney continues its century-long tradition of saluting U.S. military service.

Disney Honors World War II Veteran at Disneyland Flag Retreat

As the sun began to set over Disneyland Resort’s Main Street, U.S.A. Station, a crowd gathered in Town Square for a poignant flag retreat ceremony. The special guest of honor was none other than U.S. Army Staff Sgt. “Papa Jake” Larson, a 101-year-old World War II veteran. The ceremony honored his selfless service, courage, sacrifice, and unwavering love for his country.

During World War II, Papa Jake bravely fought in six battles in Europe including storming Omaha Beach as part of the D-Day landing and later in the Battle of the Bulge. He was thrilled to visit Disneyland Resort for the first time and never imagined he’d one day be the center of attention saluting the American flag in the very park that had become a symbol of the dreams and freedoms he fought to protect.

A daily flag retreat ceremony in Town Square has been a proud tradition since the opening day of Disneyland in 1955. Throughout that time, security cast members have diligently raised and lowered the American flag each day, including during the park’s 13-month closure. During this storied daily flag retreat ceremony, entertainment cast from the Disneyland Band and Dapper Dans regularly contribute musical performances to bring emotion to this time-honored ceremony. It’s a symbol of the enduring spirit of liberty, thanks in no small part to the selfless service and sacrifices of veterans like Jake Larson.

“At 101 years young, I never thought I’d experience the wonder, excitement and magic of Disney, but here I am with my family,” said Papa Jake. “I am truly the luckiest man in the world!”

A Hero’s Welcome

As part of the ceremony, Papa Jake was named as an Honorary Citizen of Disneyland—a rare and distinguished honor. To make it official, Disneyland Resort President, Ken Potrock invited him inside the legendary Walt Disney apartment to present the veteran with an official certificate beautifully framed under glass.

While Papa Jake has been a California resident for the last 67 years, he shared that this was the first time he had visited Disneyland Resort. While his family have visited many times, they shared that having the opportunity to enjoy the parks with their hero and see him honored at the flag retreat ceremony made this visit one they would never forget.

“Watching my 101-year-old dad experience Disney’s magic for the first time is a reminder to all that life’s wonders never expire!” said Papa Jake’s son, Karlan Larson.

Joining the Anaheim Ducks in saluting a World War II Hero

The festivities at Disneyland Resort to recognize Papa Jake for his service were only one part of the weekend’s activities as we joined with our friends at the Anaheim Ducks who had plans of their own to celebrate this World War II hero. Following Papa Jake and his family’s day at The Happiest Place on Earth, they visited another Anaheim landmark at Honda Center to be honored by the Ducks as their Hero of the Game on Nov. 22.

“Eighty years ago on D-Day, 156,000 allied troops landed in Normandy, France with the near impossible mission to liberate the world from tyranny,” said Bill Foltz, CEO of OCVIBE. “We are proud to join our friends at Disneyland Resort in honoring one of the ‘greatest generation’, Papa Jake Larson, who was among those soldiers turning the tide of World War II.”

Disney was honored to help honor Papa Jake’s military service as part of our company’s enduring admiration for servicemembers, veterans and their families beginning with our founders Walt and Roy O. Disney’s service to country during the First World War.
