No More Magic Key Reservations Available for Disneyland’s 70th Anniversary

Disneyland Magic Key holders who weren’t quick to secure their park reservations for July 17th, the 70th anniversary of the Anaheim park’s opening, will unfortunately miss out on experiencing the celebratory festivities on that exact day, including the debut of the new Walt Disney audio-animatronic figure. As of now, all Magic Key reservations for both Disneyland and Disney California Adventure are fully booked for this significant milestone.

Magic Key Reservations Gone for Disneyland 70th Anniversary

According to the Disneyland website, Inspire and Believe Magic Key reservations for July 17th are now fully booked. Additionally, Enchant and Imagine Key holders are blocked out from visiting both Disneyland and Disney California Adventure on this significant 70th-anniversary date. Disneyland releases new Magic Key reservations on a rolling 90-day basis through their website.

Unfortunately, the outlook for Disneyland Magic Key holders hoping to visit on May 16th, the very first day of the yearlong 70th anniversary celebration, isn’t much more promising in terms of reservation availability.

Magic Key Reservations Gone for Disneyland 70th Anniversary

Disneyland Magic Key holders will find all reservation options unavailable or face blockouts for both Disneyland and Disney California Adventure on the 70th anniversary kick-off date of May 16th. Conversely, those purchasing standard daily tickets can still make reservations for both parks on May 16th and the official anniversary date of July 17th.

Keep checking! Additional Magic Key reservations for the 70th anniversary kick-off on May 16th and the anniversary itself on July 17th might become available if current passholders change their plans or if Disneyland increases reservation capacity.

Disneyland’s 70th anniversary celebration, running from May 16th to July 17th, offers a wealth of entertainment for Magic Key holders. At Disneyland, they can enjoy the return of the vibrant Paint the Night parade and the breathtaking “Wondrous Journeys” fireworks spectacular. Meanwhile, Disney California Adventure will feature the lively Better Together parade and the captivating “World of Color Happiness” water show. Adding to the excitement on July 17th, two new Disneyland experiences will premiere: “Walt Disney – A Magical Life” in the Main Street Opera House and the “Last Verse” short film at the Main Street Cinema on Main Street U.S.A.

Closer Look at Big Thunder Railroad Construction

For devoted fans of Magic Kingdom’s wildest ride in the wilderness, the extended closure of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad has undoubtedly left a void in their park experience. Since its closure on January 6, 2025, anticipation has been building for the return of this beloved Frontierland attraction. While Disney has targeted a 2026 reopening, recent observations and permit updates offer a closer look at the progress and potential timeline for this extensive refurbishment.

Closer Look at Big Thunder Railroad Construction for May 2025

Visible Progress and Key Updates:

Despite the lack of a precise reopening date, there have been notable developments in the construction process as we move into May 2025:

  • Track Work: Significant work continues on replacing the roller coaster track. Recent reports indicate that the new lift hill has been installed, a crucial element of the ride’s layout. Additionally, new sections of track are being connected throughout the ride, both within the mountain structure and in the outdoor areas. This extensive track replacement suggests a comprehensive overhaul aimed at ensuring the ride’s longevity and potentially a smoother experience.
  • Queue Area Modifications: The queue area has seen considerable activity, with large portions now covered by protective tarps. While the exact nature of the work underneath remains unseen, this could indicate structural updates, cosmetic enhancements, or a combination of both.

Closer Look at Big Thunder Railroad Construction for May 2025
  • Theming Elements: Scaffolding has been erected around various structures in the town of Tumbleweed, including the water tower, windmill, Gold Dust Saloon, and Dry Goods store. This suggests that the thematic elements of the ride are also undergoing refurbishment, potentially involving repainting, repairs, or the installation of new details. Notably, the windmill’s top appears to have been turned, and scaffolding has been placed around a faux tree where branches and “possums” were previously removed.
  • Tunnel Work: Within the ride’s tunnels, a hexagonal framework has been observed in one, while a tunnel of scaffolding now reaches up to the bighorn sheep figure on a ridge. This could indicate work on show scenes, special effects, or structural maintenance within these enclosed spaces. The bighorn sheep itself might be removed for off-site refurbishment.

Permit Updates and Timeline Considerations:

Recent permit filings offer further insight into the potential duration of the refurbishment:

  • A new permit filed by Walt Disney World extends the expiration date to April 15, 2026. While a permit’s expiration date doesn’t always directly correlate with the reopening of an attraction, it provides an indication of the anticipated timeframe for the construction work. This extension suggests that the project might take longer than initially anticipated or allows for flexibility in the schedule.
  • The contractor listed on the latest permit is DPR Construction, consistent with earlier filings. The scope of work is described broadly as “General Construction,” indicating that they are involved in the overall refurbishment efforts.
Closer Look at Big Thunder Railroad Construction for May 2025

Looking Ahead:

With the new lift hill and significant track segments reportedly in place, the focus of the construction is likely to remain on completing the ride path, integrating show elements, and continuing both structural and thematic work. Disney has stated that the reimagined Big Thunder Mountain Railroad will reopen in 2026 with “a little bit of new magic,” leaving fans eager to discover what enhancements await.

While the extended closure is disappointing for parkgoers in the short term, this extensive refurbishment promises to revitalize a classic attraction, ensuring that it continues to thrill guests for years to come. As May 2025 progresses, eagle-eyed visitors might catch further glimpses of the transformation taking place within the mountain, fueling the anticipation for its eventual return to the Magic Kingdom skyline.

Orlando Theme Parks Accident & Injury Report: 1st Quarter 2025

Even in the most magical places on Earth, safety comes first—and Florida’s quarterly theme park injury report reminds us that even the happiest of haunts and most thrilling rides need to be taken seriously.

According to the Florida Department of Agriculture’s Exempt Facilities Report for the first quarter of 2025 (January through March), here’s a look at the incidents reported by the major Orlando-area theme parks.

  • Frozen Ever After (1/17): An 82-year-old woman injured her ankle after falling while exiting the ride.
  • Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind (1/21): A 73-year-old woman felt nauseated after the attraction.
  • Peter Pan’s Flight (1/24): A 51-year-old man with a pre-existing condition experienced shortness of breath.
  • Star Tours – The Adventures Continue (1/29): A 78-year-old man felt faint post-ride, also with a pre-existing condition.

  • Manta (3/28): A 49-year-old woman experienced syncope (fainting) after riding.

🏝️ Busch Gardens Tampa Bay & LEGOLAND Florida

Both reported no incidents this quarter.

These reports are self-disclosed by the parks and only include incidents where a guest required transport to a hospital. Because the parks do not have access to full medical records, the details are limited to what’s known at the time of the event. Do to privacy concerns, the Florida Department of Agriculture does not receive updates to the patient’s condition.

Major theme parks like Disney and Universal are exempt from routine state inspections due to their size and having inspection staffing in-house, but they’re still required to be transparent when serious incidents occur. It’s a reminder to ride smart, know your health, and stay hydrated—especially when Florida heat and high-speed thrills collide.

¡Viva la Pavement! New Themed Concrete Enhances Entrance to EPCOT’s Mexico Pavilion

The Chip and Co crew took a stroll through EPCOT recently and spotted something that’s concrete-ly cool — fresh themed pavement is being installed around the entrance to the Mexico pavilion! This subtle update is giving guests an even more immersive welcome to the land of fiestas, folklore, and flavorful food.

The new concrete features a deeper, slightly orange hue compared to the older, lighter pathways, instantly evoking a more authentic, sunbaked look. But it’s not just the color that’s different — this pavement has texture! Tiny gravel pieces and thematic “cracks” have been added to create a worn-in, earthy feel that fits perfectly with the pavilion’s Mesoamerican aesthetic.

Guests will notice the new pavement flanking both sides of the La Cantina de San Angel entrance archway, as well as surrounding the foot of the iconic pyramid that houses the pavilion’s indoor marketplace and beloved Gran Fiesta Tour ride.
