Disney World Increases Law Enforcement Budget

Disney World Increases Law Enforcement Budget

Don’t be surprised if you spot more law enforcement members at Disney World. In the wake of recent domestic terror attacks, Walt Disney World is increasing their budget to hire even more Orange County Sheriff Deputies. Click Orlando is reporting the Reedy Creek Improvement District, the government agency that provides services to Walt Disney World, increased their budget for outside law enforcement to $15.8 million. This increase went into effect on October 1 which was also the beginning of the 2018 fiscal year.

For comparison sake, this increase is more than double that was allocated for same budget annually from 2011 through 2015. The budget each of those five years was $7 million. After the Pule nightclub attack in 2016, Reedy Creek increased their public safety budget to 13.7 million. Just a few months after that, an additional $1.4 million was added to the budget for hiring Orange County deputies.

Disney World does not disclose the exact amount of deputies patrolling Disney World property at any give time but with this increased budget, Guests are more than likely to notice them more frequently now. Armed Deputies might be spotted at park entrances, directly inside parks and resorts, or just patrolling the Disney World property in patrol cars and even unmarked cars.

In addition to the on-duty Orange County Sheriff Deputies, Reedy Creek will also be hiring additional off-duty deputies within a budget of $7 million. The Walt Disney Company also hires even additional off-duty deputies but that budget is not disclosed to the public.

While most are happy to see the increased security, others feel like it’s bringing reality into the one place you try to forgot aout your worries.

“It’s a little bit concerning that they think they need that much security.  You’re walking around and you see the cops and wonder, ‘Why are there so many cops?'”  said Geavin Channels, a frequent park-goer from Ocala, Florida.  “It gives you that brief moment of anxiety.”

Ron Howard tweeted a special message earlier today thanking the cast, now that production had officially wrapped. Then a pair of very furry wookie arms hand him a sign with the film’s new title. You can watch the video below:

Disney Fights Back Against Unlicensed Use of Iconic Characters at Parties and Events

Disney Fights Back Against Unlicensed Use of Iconic Characters at Parties and Events

Disney is in a legal battle with Nick Sarelli over his company’s use of iconic Disney characters. Sarelli, who owns Characters for Hire, LLC, is under attack from Disney for using characters from movies such as Frozen and Star Wars at parties and events.

Disney is being represented by the firm of Arnold & Porter Kaye Scholer. In summary judgement papers filed by Disney, Characters for Hire’s operation is described thusly:

Defendants Nick Sarelli and Characters for Hire, LLC ( CFH ) operate a live costumed entertainment business that provides unlicensed and poor quality appearances of and performances by Plaintiffs’ iconic characters for themed events, such as children’s parties. CFH’s knock-off business is built upon the infringement of Plaintiffs’ highly valuable intellectual property rights. CFH copies, displays, and mimics the trademark and copyright-protected images, names, likenesses, and personas of Plaintiffs’ characters, as well as Plaintiffs’ films, musical and other creative works, to advertise and provide unauthorized versions of these characters to the fans of Plaintiffs’ works

Disney is claiming trademark violation regarding Characters for Hire’s advertising and promotion, such as Frozen-themed party packages, in addition to the franchise character performers themselves, who “who mimic their personas, attributes, and famous story lines”. Disney believes this leaves the origin or sponsorship of these events unclear to the audience of the unlicensed performances.

Disney also cites Sarelli’s versions of their characters as “low-quality knock-offs” and his company’s products as “shoddy services that are inimical to Plaintiffs’ reputation for high quality goods and services, and impeccable customer care.”

There are also accusations of copyright infringement, as Disney claims Characters for Hire “reproduces and publicly displays unauthorized images and performances of Plaintiffs’ copyrighted characters and musical works, including numerous promotional videos and images on the internet.”

The Feldman Law Group, which is representing Sarelli is disputing both the trademark and copyright allegations. Claiming “CFH’s advertising and promotional materials do not copy, reproduce, distribute or display any of the two-dimensional artwork that is the subject of those copyright registrations.”

It goes on to dispute the assertion that Disney possesses full ownership of all of the characters in question:

Numerous “characters” to which Plaintiffs’ claim rights in this action, namely Rapunzel, Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, Aladdin, Beauty (of Beauty and the Beast), Snow White, the Little Mermaid, Thor, Loki, and Princess Aurora, originally appeared in fairy tales, folk tales and other works hundreds, and in some instances thousands of years ago.

The Feldman group takes the stance that Characters for Hire has a legitimate justification for using descriptive terms as “…such descriptive uses are non-actionable given that there is no confusion as to the source of CFH’s services, or as to Plaintiffs’ endorsement, sponsorship or licensing of those services.” Therefore, there is no trademark infringement.

What are your thoughts on the lawsuit? Should event companies be able to use “Disney-like” characters?

This Haunted Mansion Cupcake Pin is Deliciously Spooky

Haunted Mansion Cupcake Pin

I seriously love all of the beautiful and unique enamel pins being designed by independent artists lately. The creativity displayed in many of them are out of this world! My newest favorite is this deliciously cute Haunted Mansion Cupcake Pin by Paging Tom on Etsy!

Paging Tom’s designer Katie has a talent for creating splendid and creative Disney inspired cupcake designs. Her sparkling Haunted Mansion inspired cupcake tee is one of my all time faves. So I was delighted to see that her first ever pin was inspired by that very same shirt! I love how the creepy wallpaper print is woven into the icing, for a chilling yet beautiful topper of the cupcake. The cupcake wrapper is the attraction host pinstripes, which compliments the frosting of the cupcake wonderfully. The darling little bat and silver glitter wraparound are the perfect contrast to make the entire pin stand out.

This pin is a pre-order, and VERY limited edition, in my experience these special fan pins tend to disappear very quickly. I know I need this one (or maybe 3) to join my Mickey Pink Frappuccino Pin on my Disney backpack!

What do you think of this fabulous Haunted Mansion Cupcake Pin?
