Disneyland Refurbishment Schedule for April 2018

In order for Disney to make sure all their attractions are kept looking pristine and in top working order, they must close from time to time. While no one likes when their favorite attraction is closed, we can be comforted knowing Disney always makes safety a priority and does their best to ensure guest satisfaction with each and every single attraction. That being said, in order to help you prepare and plan, here is the list of each attraction scheduled for a refurbishment in April 2018 at Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure.

Disney’s Old Key West Resort To Offer Wine Tasting Event

Wine Tasting at Olivia's Cafe for DVC Members

Beginning April 15th, Disney Vacation Club members will be able to partake in an hour-long wine tasting event at Olivia’s Café located at Disney’s Old Key West Resort.

In addition to sipping a few different vinos at this wine tasting, participants will explore the story of Olivia Farnsworth, the legendary founder of Olivia’s Café.  So it goes, Olivia moved to “Conch Flats” (Old Key West Resort’s setting) years ago and started cooking out of her small cottage on “Turtle Krawl”. The aroma wafting from her kitchen made her cooking no secret to the townspeople and she was soon serving up dinner to locals in small batches. As demand increased for Olivia’s famous cooking, she soon found herself adding tables, chairs and at last a storefront sign as she officially opened up her restaurant to the public.

This event will be offered weekly on Sundays except for holidays. The wine tasting will run for one hour, from 3pm to 4pm and will set guests back $30 per person. This event can accommodate up to 20 DVC members for each experience.

Photo Review: Behind The Seeds Tour

We recently had the opportunity to partake in a Behind the Seeds Tour.  If you have an interest in gardening, want to learn about sustainable food sources or just want to turn your brown thumb into a green thumb then this tour is for you.  Here is our photo review of the Behind the Seed Tour.

Our Tour Guide Camille started us on our journey through the Integrated Pest Management Lab and onto the Bio-Technology Lab.  We learned that Disney breeds specific bugs to eat other bugs that damage plants.  We learned that there are, in fact full-time scientists at the Bio-Technology Lab who conduct research in a very sterile space.

We moved on to one of the greenhouse areas.  We learned about hydroponics, a system where water is fed to plants through a tubing system, and were treated by our new friend Les to some fresh cucumber slices.  Les explained that much of the produce harvested here is used in restaurants around the Walt Disney World Resort.  We were intrigued by Les’s name tag and he shared with us that it is made of bamboo and was awarded to him by Disney Imagineers for his innovative ideas.

As we were walking through the greenhouse we noticed a fun piece of artwork, drawn into the sand, acknowledging the Flower and Garden Festival.  This was one of the many nice touches we noticed during our Behind the Seeds Tour.

We moved our way into the Fish Farming area where we saw Shrimp and Tilapia.  We learned that Shrimp, as they grow, shed their outer shell and grow a new one.  Our Tour Guide Camille also gave us some fish food and we were allowed to feed the Tilapia as well.

The final part of our tour was in another greenhouse that focused primarily on spices. Did you know that Vanilla is hand pollinated everywhere around the world except for Mexico City,  Mexico?  We discovered that the top 5 most expensive spices are:

  1. Saffron
  2. Vanilla
  3. Cardamom
  4. Cloves
  5. Cinnamon

As you might expect from any Walt Disney World Tour, be on the lookout for Hidden Mickeys!

We really enjoyed this Behind the Seeds Tour.  If you are a fan of the Living with the Land ride, are interested in agriculture, or are just looking for something new and interesting to do while visiting Epcot then the Behind the Seeds Tour is a great option.  These one hour tours begin daily at 10:30am with the last tour typically taking place at 4:30pm.  You can reserve your tour by calling 407-WDW-TOUR or stop by the tour desk just outside of Soarin’.  Ticket prices are $25 for adults and $20 for children.

A Look Into the Millennium Falcon Ride Coming to Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge

Star Wars Galaxy's Edge

Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge (Star Wars Land) is scheduled to open in Disney World and Disneyland in 2019. One of the flagship attractions of the Lands is sure to be the Millennium Falcon ride coming to both parks. With the exception of a photo of the ride released a few months ago, not much else is known about it.

Until today. NVIDIA, who is collaborating with Walt Disney Imagineering on the development of the Millenium Falcon, has given us a new look into what Guests will see when the ride opens at Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. 

The Millennium Falcon ride will utilize five synchronized projectors that will take Guests on a journey through the planet of Batuu. The photo above shows a sequence created by ILMxLAB. It gives us a look at the total immersion and attention to details that riders of the ride will experience.

According to Walt Disney Imagineer, Bei Yang, the Millennium Falcon will use a “single BOXX chassis packed with eight high-end NVIDIA Quadro P6000 GPUs, connected via Quadro SLI.” Yang says that this allows the designers to “achieve performance unlike anything before.”

One thing is for sure, the Millennium Falcon ride is going to be out of this world!

Avengers and Friends Grant Last Wish of Dying Boy

Avengers Grant Dying Wish

Superheroes can found on and off screen as celebrity personalities came together to grant the dying wish of a young boy. Fox News personality Shannon Bream tweeted calling out to the cast of the Avengers requesting their help to put together a greeting for the boy. Several stars on the big and small screen reached out to help!

The tweet was retweeted over 24,000 times and had over 26,000 likes.  Avengers Chris Evans(Captain America), responded “Happy to! DM me, his co-star Paul Bettany(Vision) replied “I’m the purple one. DM me.”

The Avengers were not the only ones to offer their help, Ryan Renolds(Deadpool) who described himself as “the Reserve Avenger,” came to the rescue. Stars from all over the Twitterverse showed their support to make the boys final wish come true.

It just goes to show no matter which “universe” they come from, if there is someone in need, heroes will come to help.

There’s a new snack bar in town, and it is located right in the lobby of the BoardWalk Inn, a convenient spot for guests.

The previous concierge desk has been repurposed as a snack bar where guests can purchase resort refillable mugs, popcorn and a limited selection of beverages. While you cannot get your mugs refilled at the snack bar, you can purchase them and have them activated so you are ready to go when you hit the refill stations.

The BoardWalk Inn is located on Disney’s BoardWalk just a quick walk from Epcot and a short boat ride away from Hollywood Studios.

There’s so much going on at Disney Springs this Spring! House of Blues has just added another event to get excited about – The Arts & Drafts Festival!

The Arts & Drafts Festival will be held on April 21 from 12 pm to 4 pm. The Festival will feature nine local artists and of course, draft beer! Artwork will be on display from the following artists:

  • German Lemus
  • Dawn Schreiner
  • Raw Flower
  • Mel Fiorentino
  • Nautical Pallett
  • Steve Cahill
  • ES Visuals
  • Dream Anchor Artifacts
  • Jessy Marie Art

In addition to the arts and drafts, the Festival will showcase live music from Mike Lynch Band and The Steve Hogie Band.

The Incredible Summer continues as the Parr family comes to a video game system near you!  On June 15th LEGO The Incredibles video game will be available on all video consoles.  Interestingly enough, this is also the date that the new Disney Pixar film Incredibles 2 opens in theaters!

The game will be available on consoles including Nintendo Switch™, PlayStation®4 computer entertainment system, Xbox One, and PC.

LEGO The Incredibles players can act as their favorite Parr family character, working together to fight crime.  Using their super strengths and funny family dynamic in the Lego world to complete missions.

Lego is known for its humorous characters and fun action-packed video games. Is it possible that you may see Mr. Incredible, Elastigirl, Violet, Dash, and Jack-Jack down the road in the next Lego movie?  We will have to see…

Tokyo Disney Easter Offerings Mark the Start of 35th Anniversary Celebrations

Tokyo Disney Resort guests can now enjoy Disney Easter at Tokyo DisneySea which includes a sneak peek of the theme song for the 35th Anniversary “Happiest Celebration” which is just around the corner.

During these fun-filled Easter festivities, colorful decorations, entertainment special menus and exclusive merchandise will be available. For the first time this year, Tokyo DisneySea will also host an egg hunt with the whimsical eggs featuring much-loved Disney characters.  Participants will also receive an exclusive Bunny Ears hair clip.

In addition, the Fashionable Easter show celebrating the arrival of Spring will take place at the Mediterranean Harbor.  This production will feature pyrotechnics and the premiere of the “Happiest Celebration” theme song.  Also, over at Waterfront Park, members of the Tokyo DisneySea Maritime Band will be dress in special costumes which celebrate the season.

Tokyo Disney Easter Offerings Mark the Start of 35th Anniversary Celebrations

Visitors will also want to be sure to check out the Tokyo Disney Resort 35th Anniversary merchandise along with special Easter-themed offerings. Highlights include Bunny Ears Headbands and Easter Bonnets.  In celebration of the season, new food and drink items will also be offered at Cafe Portofino, New York Deli, Barnacle Bill’s, Sebastian’s Calypso Kitchen and Tropic Al’s.

Easter Celebrations will take place at Tokyo Disney until June 6th with “Happiest Celebration!” festivities kicking off on April 15.
