Disney Legal Celebrates ‘Ohana by Assisting with 17 Adoptions

Disney Legal Celebrates 'Ohana by Assisting with 17 Adoptions

This past November 17 marked the 18th Annual National Adoption Day in Los Angeles. As always, Disney Legal was there to offer pro bono services and volunteers to assist in the adoption process of 17 children. Over the course of the afternoon, more than 200 children were officially adopted by their “forever families.”

Adoption work is the signature pro bono project of Disney Legal’s Southern California offices. Under the leadership of Senior Executive Vice President, General Counsel & Secretary Alan Braverman, the pro bono program launched in August 2013 in partnership with the nonprofit Public Counsel, the nation’s largest pro bono law firm. Public Counsel provides training and support to volunteer attorneys from major law firms and corporations who then offer free legal assistance to more than 30,000 children, youth, families and community organizations each year. A similar adoption pro bono program has also been established in The Walt Disney Company’s New York offices through a partnership with the New York-based nonprofit Mobilization for Justice. Disney’s legal pro bono program is just one example of a Company skills-based volunteer opportunity for its employees.

The Walt Disney Company led the way for entertainment companies to take on pro bono adoption cases. “It took a lot of work for us to be able to do the adoption program as an in-house legal department, because our structure is very different from a law firm,” says Associate Principal Counsel Rob Stevenson, who helps run the program in Southern California along with Principal Counsel Tina Aughinbaugh. Stevenson, Aughinbaugh and their team created training materials, originally intended for internal use by Disney attorneys, which Public Counsel now shares with other corporations and firms—many of which were inspired by Disney’s participation. “They felt that if this is a program that Disney has approved and is energized in, then this is something they should take a look at,” says Karen Ullman, supervising senior staff attorney, Children’s Rights, Public Counsel. “And now we have a lot of other studios participating as well, which is great for us and our families.”

Since the adoption program’s inception at Disney, more than 125 Disney Legal volunteers have helped to facilitate 223 adoptions company-wide. In addition to completing the adoption work, Disney’s lawyers have advocated for financial and medical benefits for their clients, resulting in tens of thousands of dollars in benefits for adopting families who are often financially distressed. Disney Legal’s efforts were honored earlier this year with the 2016 Public Counsel Pro Bono Award, which recognized the “team’s dedication in handling multiple adoption cases, with an array of advocacy issues, and its tireless fight to obtain additional services and benefits for the most vulnerable youth.”

Recruitment for Disney’s pro bono adoption program has never been a challenge, says Aughinbaugh. The legal teams donate their time and skills, culminating with an immeasurable gift. “There’s something about sitting at the courtroom table with the clients and the child that they’re adopting and just watching the sheer emotion from them and everyone in the courtroom,” Aughinbaugh shares. “It’s just a moment of pure joy for everyone.”

Stevenson echoes that sentiment. “Some of these children have had really rough circumstances in their lives and haven’t had somebody that’s really taken care of them before these foster parents came into their lives. I see how life-changing it will be for them to now finally have a parent that really is permanent,” he says. “It’s amazing to be a part of giving that to them.”

Disney Legal’s pro bono program, which is run by Associate General Counsel Karen Frederiksen, undertakes additional projects on behalf of children, veterans, students and others. For example, Disney Legal has represented children from Central America who are subject to deportation and face the immigration system alone and veterans who seek to upgrade their discharge status and receive medical, mental health and other benefits. Disney’s lawyers have recently completed a detailed resource handbook for homeless youth in Florida, and they regularly participate in the Constitutional Rights Foundation’s mock trial program for high school and middle school students. “I am incredibly proud of our ever-expanding pro bono program,” Frederiksen says. “Our tremendous growth over the last four years has only been possible because of the generous and thoughtful contributions of our Disney Legal volunteers. They give their time, their intelligence and their hearts. The result is breathtaking.”

Another example of Disney Magic at its finest!

Disney Announces Its 2017 Conservation Heroes

Disney Announces Its 2017 Conservation Heroes

Every year, the Disney Conservation Fund celebrates a select few individuals who have worked tirelessly to save wildlife and protect habitats. They are constantly inspiring communities to take part in conservation efforts. This year, Disney Conservation Heroes were honored for their significant efforts in protecting wildlife across the globe, ranging from the ploughshare tortoise in Madagascar and pygmy hog in India, to the Tonkin snub-nosed monkeys in Vietnam and many more.

Some of these Heroes focused on bettering the communities where these animals live by training locals to earn their livelihoods in new ways that are more sustainable and animal-friendly. Others removed animal snares from savannas and trained rangers to protect wildlife habitats. Others led reforestation efforts and cleaned up illegal waste dumps impacting communities and wildlife. In all cases, these Heroes dedicated countless hours in challenging conditions to make the world a better place for all of us.

In addition to recognizing honorees’ dedication to engaging their communities to protect wildlife, each Hero and his or her nominating organization will share a $1,500 award from the fund.

The Star Wars Monopoly Game is the Game You’ve Been Looking For

Star Wars Monopoly Game

With the new Star Wars: The Last Jedi movie debuting soon, I’ve been looking for ways to get into the Jedi spirit. Or maybe I’m just looking for ways to distract myself because I just can not wait to see it! The Star Wars Monopoly GameThe Star Wars Monopoly Game is the Game You've Been Looking For would be a great way to pass the cold winter nights waiting for the movie premiere!

The Star Wars Monopoly Game is the Game You've Been Looking For

The Monopoly game has been taken to a galaxy far, far away! This edition of Monopoly was created to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the original Star Wars movie. Players can relive the story of Star Wars: A New Hope as they travel around the board. You can collect memorable scenes and iconic ships inspired by the 1977 movie. The Chance and Community cards are called Force and Smuggler’s Cargo cards, and will shape players’ destinies throughout the game. Instead of building houses and hotels, you’ll be building Fleets and Bases. This edition of the Monopoly game features game tokens inspired by the Star Wars universe as well. Players can work their way around the board as a Luke Skywalker’s X-wing flight helmet, an Imperial Stormtrooper helmet, Luke Skywalker’s Landspeeder, the Death Star, R2-D2, or the Millennium Falcon.

I’ve got dibs on the Millennium Falcon token!

Walking Photo Tour of Swan & Dolphin Resort Holiday Decorations

Walking Photo Tour of Swan & Dolphin Resort Holiday Decorations

We just love wandering around the Walt Disney World Resort checking out all of the amazing holiday decorations.  The Walt Disney World Swan & Dolphin have some beautiful displays that are definitely worth seeing.  Here is our walking photo tour of the Swan & Dolphin Resort Holiday Decorations.

The Swan side of the Swan & Dolphin Resort features this amazing Holiday Chocolate Santa Display.  Made with nearly 1,700 pounds of chocolate and coming in at over 5 million calories, this sweet-smelling exhibit is definitely worth a visit.  Be sure to read the endearing letter to Santa, written by Kandy Kane, in the book on the podium.

The Dolphin side of the Swan & Dolphin Resort has some lovely displays as well.   The large Christmas Tree in the lobby is resplendant with its red and silver decorations.  Step in to Fuel, the coffee/food/sweets shop just off the lobby, to see the “Mother Nature, Winter Time” Sugar Sculpture.  Fresh Market, located on the ground floor of the Dolphin Resort, has a lovely Gingerbread House with beautiful details.  On select dates, the Dolphin Lobby hosts a tree lighting ceremony that is great fun for the whole family.

The connected walkway between the two buildings is lined with festive touches.  We really love the mini poinsettias lining the middle of the walkway.  The Walt Disney World Swan & Dolphin is located at the far end of The Boardwalk.  Your own walking photo tour of the Swan & Dolphin Resort Holiday Decorations is just a short stroll away.

Will you be visiting the Swan & Dolphin Resort this holiday season?  Please leave your comments in the box below.

Elsa’s Hot Cocoa is Perfect to Warm You Up on a Frozen Day

Elsa's Hot Cocoa

I don’t know about you, but in our house Frozen is still a pretty big deal! I was so excited when I found this recipe for Elsa’s Hot Cocoa from Disney Family.

This will be perfect for curling up under blankets and watching Olaf’s Frozen Adventure when it airs on ABC as part of the 25 Days of Christmas on Thursday, December 14th at 8:00pm EST.

Ingredients for the marshmallows:

  • 8 ounces frozen whipped topping
  •  1/2 cup water
  •  Blue food coloring
  •  Toothpicks
  •  Snowflake cookie cutter (the one we used was a little too big so make sure yours will fit several times in the pan you use)

Ingredients for 4 servings of cocoa:

  • 5-6 cups milk
  •  1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  •  1 cup chopped white chocolate (or white chocolate chips)

Directions:

  1. Mix the whipped topping and water together in a bowl
  2. Place wax paper over a 9in round pan
  3. Pour the whipped topping and water mixture into the pan and give it a little shake or a tap to even it out
  4. Add 8-10 drops of blue food coloring evenly around the pan, then use a toothpick to create a marbled pattern (this was fun for the kids!)
  5. Place in the freezer for at least 4 hours
  6. Once frozen, use the snowflake cookie cutter to cut snowflakes out of the whipped topping/water mixture (you can pop them back in the freezer if you’re not quite ready for your cocoa at this point)
  7. When you’re ready to serve, combine the milk, vanilla and white chocolate in a sauce pan and heat over low, stirring continuously.
  8. Once melted, combined and warm, remove from heat and pour into 4 mugs – you can add a drop of blue food coloring at this point to make them icy blue if you want!
  9. Add the frozen snowflakes to the mugs and watch them melt and swirl!

So grab the ingredients and serve up some of Elsa’s Hot Cocoa, it’s perfect to warm up any Frozen day!

This Fab 4 Cake Disney Pin is Deliciously Adorable

This Fab 4 Cake Disney Pin is Deliciously Adorable

Disney Pins + Delicious Disney inspired snacks and sweets is totally one of my addictions. The newest pin creation from Studio 1955 combines the tastiness of cake, with the whimsical inspiration of the fab five! The Fab Five Cake Disney Pin might look good enough to eat, but it’s probably best if we just wear it proudly.

This pin is a topsy-turvy delight that captures Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Goofy, and Pluto as tasty layers of a cake. Each layer captures the essence of the character it represents fabulously, complete with Pluto’s ears as the topper. Enamel lapel pins are very on trend right now, and are a great way to incorporate what you love into your every day outfits. Pins go great on jackets, backpacks, totes, hats, and even shoes! I love pins designed by independent artists like this one, that let me add a unique dash of Disney to my everyday wardrobe.

Which accessory would you wear your Fab Five Cake Disney Pin on?

Price Increase for the Walt Disney World Refillable Resort Mugs

Refillable Resort Mugs

It looks like another price increase is coming to Walt Disney World, this time it’s the refillable resort mugs. The Walt Disney World Refillable Resort Mugs are a handy item for stays on property, and have their perks, but according to Disney Food Blog, the cost of them has now gone up.

The new cost of the mugs are now $18.99, and the refills are good for the entire length of your stay. That means regardless if you stay one night, or 10, you’ll only pay one flat free to enjoy unlimited refills for the entirety of your stay.  The way the mug costs have worked have changed a lot over the years, so it’s really no surprise that they are increasing the cost again. Guests who are on the Dining Plan, will receive one of these mugs per-person on the dining plan at no additional cost. With the new changes coming to the dining plan for 2018, it’s definetly worth checking out.

Are you surprised about the price increase of the Walt Disney World Refillable Resort Mugs?
