Ridley Scott In Talks To Direct New Disney Movie That Focuses on Merlin

Ridley Scott Merlin

You may know him as the director of Sci-Fil thrillers like Alien or Blade Runner, but Ridley Scott may be bringing his talents to Disney.  According to a piece in Variety, Scott is reportedly in talks with Disney to direct “The Merlin Saga”

Based on the books by T.A. Barron, the series follows a young Merlin before he goes on to become the mentor of King Arthur.  The Merlin Saga marks the first of two films Disney is developing based around the character of Merlin with the second being a live-action “Sword In the Stone,” on which Scott also met with execs to discuss directing.

As of going to print, little information has been released about either project.  However, these are two films that we’ll be excitedly tracking the progress of in the months ahead.  Keeping following along with Chip and Co. for the latest in Merlin news and updates!

American Runner Wins 25th Annual Walt Disney World Marathon for First Time in 14 Years

American Runner Wins 25th Annual Walt Disney World Marathon for First Time in 14 Years

On the 25th anniversary of the Walt Disney World Marathon, Nick Hilton ushered in a new era, ending Brazil’s recent dominance after becoming the first American to win the 25th Annual Walt Disney World Marathon since 2004.

Hilton, 28, is only the fourth American runner to win the 26.2-mile race that stretches through all four Disney theme parks and ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at the Central Florida resort. The last American winner was Matthew Dobson, 14 years ago. Before Hilton’s win Sunday, a Brazilian runner had won the race six of the past seven years, including the last four.

By contrast, the women’s division remained decidedly Brazilian as Giovanna Martins of Sao Paulo won for the third time in the last four years. In fact, she became the only three-time women’s winner in race history after crossing the finish line in 2:47:22, well ahead of Jackie Hall of St. Charles, Missouri (2:49:48) and Alicia Cevallos of Quito, Ecuador (2:50:49).

Hilton’s victory had extra significance. In addition to the victory coming one year after he got engaged at Walt Disney World Resort, his winning time qualified the Tucson, Arizona resident for the U.S. Olympic Team Trials for the 2020 Summer Games.

“I feel amazing,’’ said Hilton, who hasn’t had a lot of success in marathon races. “The marathon has been a mixed bag for me, so to come back to a place (Walt Disney World Resort) that means a lot to me and my wife, and to come back and win, feels amazing.’’

And the Disney Marathon field of 25,500 made him earn it. Hilton battled three other contenders for most of the race and didn’t pull away until the late stages. He finished in a blistering 2:17:52 – more than two minutes ahead of Vanilson Neves of Sao Paulo (2:20:25) who was followed by Nicholas Caprario of Kansas City, Missouri (2:21:31).

“I had a great group of guys who ran with me,’’ Hilton said. “By about mile 20, there were two of us and we started running some 5 flats (five-minute mile pace). I just happened to hold on a little bit better towards the end of the race.’’

The Disney marathon weekend, which began in 1994 with one race involving roughly 8,000 runners, has since grown to more than 100,000 runners and spectators in its 25th year and remains one of the most popular marathons in the nation and is widely regarded as the first entertainment-focused marathon in the country. Over the years, nearly a million people of various ages and abilities have run in a Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend race, including 76 who have now run all 25 Disney marathons.

In celebration of the anniversary, every runner was given a commemorative finisher’s medal and special 25th anniversary Mickey Mouse ears to wear after crossing the finish line at Epcot on what was a sunny but unseasonably cool Florida morning. In addition, there were special entertainment experiences every half mile along the course, from full marching bands in three of the theme parks to a 100-member choir near Mile 26 to nostalgic Disney movie soundtracks playing along Main Street U.S.A., at Magic Kingdom, plus exciting meet & greet opportunities with beloved Disney characters throughout the course.

The race was the final day of a five-day race weekend that featured kids’ races, a 5K, a 10K, and a half marathon before Sunday’s marathon, plus a health and fitness expo. Registration information for the four upcoming Disney race weekends is at www.runDisney.com.

Learn More About Disney’s Aulani Resort & Spa Through the Hawaiian Language

Learn More About Disney's Aulani Resort & Spa Through the Hawaiian Language

Thinking of visiting Aulani in this new makahiki or year? Then, make sure to learn a bit of the language prior to your visit! Last year, we brought a few common Hawaiian words to our readers and we are excited to share today’s word: makahiki.

The word has roots in the season called makahiki, which was celebrated in old Hawaiʻi and typically begins in October and lasts around four months. It is a fun coincidence that makahiki coincides with our holiday season today. Makahiki was a time of peace and fun. Everyone enjoyed the plenty of the harvest and people of all ages played games such as tug-of-war, surfing, and hill-sledding.

At Aulani, they celebrate the story of makahiki at Makahiki restaurant, where you can enjoy the bounty of the islands with a breakfast or dinner buffet. Aunty and Uncle put on wonderful feasts that even Mickey Mouse and his pals may join.

Or if you would prefer to celebrate with some games and activities, Aulani Resort offers surfing activities for all ages. You might want to follow the footsteps of the warriors of old Hawaiʻi who would exercise to stay in shape during the peaceful time. Why not try the Ocean Fitness class or Ocean Yoga on a paddleboard? There are so many ways to engage in the story. Come visit Aulani during the Makahiki season!

REVIEW: Dole Whip Topped Pineapple Upside Down Cake at Aloha Isle in Magic Kingdom

REVIEW: Dole Whip Topped Pineapple Upside Down Cake at Aloha Isle in Magic Kingdom

Just when you thought the Dole Whip soft serve ice cream was the height of perfection, Aloha Isle raised the bar with the addition of the Pineapple Upside Down Cake topped with Dole Whip. This popular refreshment destination, Aloha Isle inside Magic Kingdom, actually added the Pineapple Upside Down Cake a couple of months ago. Though we were a little slow to introduce ourselves to this refreshing snack, once we met it was definitely love at first bite!

REVIEW: Dole Whip Topped Pineapple Upside Down Cake at Aloha Isle in Magic Kingdom

This tasty treat features a mini-pineapple upside down cake topped (or should I say heaped) with the amazing Pineapple Dole Whip ice cream Disney Addicts love. The cake is moist, definitely sweet and topped with bite-size chunks of pineapple.

REVIEW: Dole Whip Topped Pineapple Upside Down Cake at Aloha Isle in Magic Kingdom

Of course, no pineapple upside-down cake is complete without the addition of a few Maraschino cherries which we found hiding under the Dole Whip ice cream.

REVIEW: Dole Whip Topped Pineapple Upside Down Cake at Aloha Isle in Magic Kingdom

Wondering whether this refreshing treat is big enough to share? As my friends in the south like to say, there was “gracious-plenty” of this tasty snack. Our three spoons attacked our bowl like we had not eaten in days and we still had a bite or two left after our sweet tooths were fully satisfied.

You can use a Snack Credit to enjoy this dessert or purchase one for $6.49 plus tax.

Figment’s Brush with the Masters 2018 Scavenger Hunt

Figment's Brush with the Masters 2018 Scavenger Hunt

Epcot’s International Festival of the Arts event is just around the corner, and there’s so many exciting things to look forward to! With each festival it seems Epcot is really enjoying the themed scavenger hunts, and this year’s Festival of the Arts is no exception. The Figment’s Brush with the Masters 2018 Scavenger Hunt is confirmed, and we can’t wait!

Figment needs help, so grab a friend, or group, or even make it a solo mission, and get ready to hunt! You’ll help Figment learn about art on this scavenger hunt around World Showcase. To get started, purchase your map and stickers at Pin Central, Disney Traders, or World Traveler. Then, search for Figment hiding inside famous works of art at each World Showcase pavilion—just look for the Figment-themed picture frame. Every time you find Figment, add the corresponding sticker to the pavilion on your map. Once your journey is complete, return your map to Disney Traders for an artful surprise! The cost of this activity is $8.99 this year, and the surprise has not yet been revealed. Last year the prize at the end was a magnet, I’ve got my fingers crossed for pins this year!

You can join in the fun, and join Figment’s Brush with the Masters 2018 Scavenger Hunt at Epcot during the International Festival of the Arts event that starts Friday January 12th!
