Disney’s New Gondola System will Cost an Estimated 3.8 Million Dollars Just for Electrical Work

Disney's New Gondola System will Cost an Estimated 3.8 Million Dollars Just for Electrical Work

Construction work on Walt Disney World’s gondola system, which will transport visitors by air to Hollywood Studios and Epcot as well as several resorts, is moving forward.

Reedy Creek officials approved a preliminary $3.8 million construction budget Wednesday for the electric services for the project, called Disney Skyliner.

Construction on the electrical infrastructure that will power the gondola system could begin in the next six months or sooner, said Jason Herrick, the manager for planning and engineering for Reedy Creek Energy Services.

A bid proposal submitted by Carter Electric said the work would be completed in October.

Disney has not announced when the gondolas will start operating.

Also Wednesday’s meeting, officials also voted to approve a $2.19 million construction project on electric work for “Project S,” which Herrick called a special project requiring several different sizes and types of transformers.

Project S is happening at Epcot, Orange County Comptroller’s Office records show. Several Disney blogs have reported Project S is the upcoming “Guardians of the Galaxy” attractions slated to replace Ellen’s Energy Adventure.

Reedy Creek Improvement District will pay for both projects with utility revenue-issued bonds. The district maintains and builds roads and utilities at Disney.

One part of the gondola project — four switches, six transformers and 9,000 feet of cable (about 1.7 miles’ worth) — will cost $1.2 million, Reedy Creek documents showed.

Disney Skyliner will transport visitors to five stops: the stations at the two theme parks, a station that services both Pop Century Resort and Disney’s Art of Animation Resort and another at Caribbean Beach Resort. The fifth proposed station is at Disney Vacation Club property Riviera Resort when it opens.

“It’s a unique project for us,” Herrick said at Wednesday’s public meeting. “It’s sprawled out.”

Apopka-based Carter Electric was the only company to bid on the project, which Reedy Creek officials blamed on a shortfall of electricians in the industry and a boom in Central Florida construction work.

In July, Reedy Creek expected the project to cost $3.2 million, but Carter’s bid came back nearly 20 percent higher. The Board of Supervisors approved the new preliminary budget at Wednesday’s meeting.

Reedy Creek will be responsible for building the six points of service — each with the possibility of having multiple transformers — to run the transportation system, said John Classe, Reedy Creek district administrator. The multiple service points are important in case there’s an electricity backup to the keep the system running, he said.

In December, Disney’s official parks blog released more details that showed Disney characters would be featured on the outside of the gondola so it looks like they are riding too. Passengers will see iconic views of Hollywood Studios’ Twilight Zone Tower of Terror and an “a rare birds-eye view of World Showcase” at Epcot, the post said.

‘Muppet Guys Talking’ Reveals the Secrets, Spirit, and Sense of Fun That Created the World’s Most Beloved Characters

‘Muppet Guys Talking’ Reveals the Secrets, Spirit, and Sense of Fun That Created the World’s Most Beloved Characters

Are you ready to watch as the brand-new documentary, Muppet Guys Talking, reveals the secrets, spirit, and sense of fun that created some of the world’s most beloved characters on March 16th? This documentary will be available exclusively online at MuppetGuysTalking.com. It’s the first-ever documentary from acclaimed filmmaker Frank Oz, and showcases original Muppet performers Jerry Nelson, Fran Brill, Dave Goelz, Bill Barretta and Frank Oz.

It’s been almost a year since Muppet Guys Talking made its debut during SXSW 2017, when it was hailed as “a must-see” (Indiewire) … and finally, on March 16 Muppet fans worldwide can see it!

For decades, the secrets of one of the most successful and acclaimed creative endeavors the world has ever known have been locked away, but on March 16 the safe will be cracked open as the documentary Muppet Guys Talking: Secrets Behind the Show the Whole World Watched explores how remarkable creativity was allowed to grow in an atmosphere of playfulness and collaboration with the nurturing support of Jim Henson.

Directed by Frank Oz, Muppet Guys Talking will be available to fans around the world at www.MuppetGuysTalking.com, where viewers will be able to purchase the film beginning March 16. Anyone who signs up at MuppetGuysTalking.com in advance of its release will also receive special additional Muppet Guys Talking content, be first to get the link to buy the film, and be first to receive details of limited-time offers when the film is released March 16.

Muppet Guys Talking brings together five of the original Muppet performers who discuss with each other their individual approaches to creating memorable characters and the impact Jim Henson had on their lives and work.

Conceived by Victoria Labalme, and produced by Oz, Labalme, and Leslie Converse, Muppet Guys Talking has been hailed by critics for its unexpected and intimate exploration of the true spirit of The Muppets.

After Muppet Guys Talking premiered at the 2017 South by Southwest festival, The Hollywood Reporter wrote, “Good luck preventing that big, goofy grin from spreading across your face while watching Muppet Guys Talking.”

Muppet Guys Talking is “a must-see,” wrote IndieWire, “not only for Muppet fans and the people who made them, but for anyone seeking insight into the power of creativity.”

Following the film’s acclaim at SXSW, Labalme says different options were considered for how to release the documentary to audiences, including more traditional routes. “We wanted to make the movie available directly to fans in a way that would be true to the spirit of the documentary itself – a bit rebellious, a bit different, a bit scrappy.”

Reaching a global audience has been important from the start, Labalme added. “This is a film we hope will reach beyond Muppet fans and inspire artists, entrepreneurs, creative visionaries and leaders by showing what can happen in an environment that encourages having fun, taking risks and collaborating.”

The performers who appear in Muppet Guys Talking are:

Jerry Nelson, whose Muppet creations have included Count von Count, Snuffleupagus, Lew Zealand and Gobo Fraggle.

Fran Brill, whose Muppet creations have included Prairie Dawn, Zoe, Little Bird and Betty Lou.

Dave Goelz, whose Muppet creations have included The Great Gonzo, Dr. Bunsen Honeydew, Zoot, and Boober Fraggle.

Bill Barretta, whose Muppet creations have included Pepe the King Prawn, Johnny Fiama, Bobo the Bear and Big Mean Carl.

Frank Oz, whose Muppet creations have included Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear, Cookie Monster and Grover.

Already, tens of thousands of fans from dozens of countries around the world have registered at MuppetGuysTalking.com, where Muppet Guys Talking will be available beginning Friday, March 16.

Celebrate Women on Broadway and International Women’s Day with Two Special “Frozen” Events

Frozen International Women's Day Celebration

Frozen fans can celebrate the women of Broadway and International Women’s Day with two special events this March!

Disney Theatrical Productions and Frozen have partnered with The Actors Fund to celebrate International Women’s Day with a symposium at The St. James Theatre,  “Women’s Day on Broadway: Celebrating Stories, By, For, and About Women,” and a special performance of Frozen to benefit The Actors Fund and its Phyllis Newman Women’s Health Initiative.

The events aim to highlight the importance of a continued investment in the encouragement and mentorship that is crucial to establishing and maintaining gender equality in the Broadway community.

“Each and every day, countless women across the country lend their talents to the continued success of the Broadway industry,” said Anne Quart, Disney Theatrical Productions’ SVP of Production and Co-Producer. “We are honored to be working with The Actors Fund to highlight the remarkable contribution of women to our community. By gathering together for this unique event, we hope to be able to provide a platform for women to share their experiences and find a collective opportunity for growth. This is just part of our constant effort to encourage the development of future generations of women to ensure prosperity and equality in our profession for many years to come.”

“Women are an integral part of every facet of our entertainment and performing arts community, whether it’s on stage, on camera or behind the scenes,” said Barbara Davis, Chief Operating Officer of The Actors Fund. “It’s important that the women of Broadway—and all areas of this business—know that The Actors Fund’s sole purpose is to foster stability and resiliency in their lives, and to provide them with a safety net over their lifespan. We’re proud to partner with Disney in providing a forum to help spread this message and to garner additional support for these vital health and wellness services for all the women we serve.”

“Women’s Day on Broadway: Celebrating Stories By, For, & About Women” will be held on Monday, March 12th. The symposium will take place at the St. James Theatre, home of Broadway’s new musical Frozen. This first-of-its-kind Broadway event will welcome some of the most accomplished women on Broadway and in the entertainment industry, in addition to a host of up-and-coming professionals, for a variety of panel discussions, the specifics of which will be announced closer to the event date. Disney Theatrical Productions invites women working in entertainment and those interested in the topic to attend the event free of charge. Details and RSVP information will be announced at a later date.

The celebration continues on Wednesday, March 14th with a special performance of Frozen on Broadway at 8pm that will benefit The Actors Fund and their Phyllis Newman Women’s Health Initiative. Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased at www.actorsfund.org/Frozen. Founded by Tony Award® winner and cancer survivor Phyllis Newman, the program offers women in entertainment and performing arts across the country a safe place to go to address serious medical concerns and get confidential and compassionate help. The program provides access to an extensive support network that includes health care, diagnostic, preventive, and mental health services, substance abuse treatment and emergency financial assistance.

Dumbo the Flying Elephant is Currently Closed for Refurbishment at Disneyland

Dumbo, one of Disneyland’s most iconic rides in history has shut down temporarily, but don’t panic. It will be back up and flying again soon. Disney is doing a little work on the ride’s queue that will make life a bit better for those who stand in line for an hour at a time.

“The Dumbo elephants have packed their trunks for now,” park spokeswoman Suzi Brown joked, describing the rehabilitation efforts that started Jan. 8, which will include moving the lines to the back of the ride and installing – are you ready for this – shade canopies that have been desperately needed for decades.

The lines to board the attraction are being relocated to a lesser used area behind the main walkway, which will “help us improve the flow around that area,” said Jim Slagle, director of facilities for Disneyland. Meanwhile, wooden barriers cover the work underway. January is a typical refurbishment season when the parks close rides for repairs and updates.

The elephants and ride arms that lift them into the air will get a fresh coat of paint, and the entire experience will be spruced up. It’s slated to reopen in the spring.

Lost and Found Items at Walt Disney World will Now Be Donated After 30 Days

ROOM entrance

Walt Disney World

If you lose an item on your next Walt Disney World vacation, make sure to claim it no longer than 30 days after you lost it! Previously, items lost at Walt Disney World were kept for 90 days. However, a new bill was passed in Florida that stated Theme Parks now can donate those times after 30 days.

As you can imagine, several items go missing at Walt Disney World Resort daily. Disney has a process in place to help get those lost items back to their owner. Back in 2014, Disney Guest Relations Director, Keith Gossett, told WFTV how lost items are organized:

“They are color-coded with dots which identify which park it was found in and that day. Also, we incorporate the date on the glasses, and then we sort them here, and wait for the calls from our guests to locate them. Glasses, hats, visors, those are some of our most popular items.”

“We have probably over 250,000 that go beyond our 90-day claim period and are then offered up to charitable organizations.”

Another change introduced in the bill states that lost items will now go to needy families and non-profit organizations. Previously, these items went to Orlando-area Sheriff Departments. These changes will save taxpayers indefinite amounts of money.

Have you ever lost an item at Walt Disney World?
